There is a small correction I feel I need to make. The Commonwealth countries are independent. The UK is a Commonwealth country too. The relationship between the countries is via the King/Queen, not as subordinates of the UK. For example the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) is also the King of Australia, the King of New Zealand and the King of Canada, but Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not have a political binding to the government of the UK other than normal diplomatic relationships. Pine Gap (JDFPG) has a long history of signals intelligence that both Americans and Australians can be proud of. It is jointly run by the US (CIA, NSA, NRO) and Australia (ASIO, ASIS, ASD) but there are "contractors" there from many military industrial entities. It remains controversial to this day.
The use of the word 'Commonwealth' can be confusing in the Australian context, where it has two completely different meanings. On the one hand it may refer to the Commonwealth of Nations, of which Australia is simply one member. Some, but not all of the Commonwealth countries share the UK monarch as head of state, though in a different guise, as described in simbob26's post above. On the other hand the word 'Commonwealth' is also used in Australia's official title: the Commonwealth of Australia. In this case it describes the outcome of the federation of the former British colonies on 1 January 1901 that formed the new country of Australia. The different levels of government in Australia are referred to as the federal or Commonwealth government and the various state governments e.g. NSW, VIC etc.
I would like to say that also there are many Republican Countries that are still apart of the commonwealth which were once head by king or Queen as head of state now it their own for one country is India
Pine Gap has been and will continue to be incredibly important for world peace and stability. In reality, no other country or alliance has anything like it. In addition, no one in their right mind wants a war with China or any other country, however, we must always take precautions and be prepared. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia shows that countries controlled by one person or by one party are unpredictable and dangerous. Pine Gap is vital to ensure that we (the 5 Eyes and other democratic countries) are aware and prepared for such an event.
I think the most dangerous country over the last 70 years has been the US. They invaded and destroyed Iraq on a lie, leading to the death of over 500,000 civilians and destabilizing the whole region. In Libya they destroyed the country, turned it into a failed state and revived the slave markets. Vietnam was more of the same. Countless other interventions and wars. Australia is always dragged into these terrible illegal wars - its of great shame for my country.
I like how the narrator says the place is top secret and its highly classified yet gives out its exact longitude and latitude not only that every trip ive made flying into or out of Alice Springs to or from the western Australian coast the pilots on the flights have flown close enough to the place to be able to point it out .
G'day Mate! When you are looking for US military joint exercises with Australia etc look at Operation Talisman Sabre which is held every 2 years in Northern Australia Also perhaps check out the Bradshaw Filed training area where the rotation of US marines regularly carry out exercises. That area is about the size of the state of Connecticut or so I am told... Cheers!
Pine Gap made Australia a global target Australians not allowed except in some areas being considered USA territory from where it supervises other communications and intelligence
We currently have 26.5 million citizens, Brits are arriving in droves right now! 😄 It would be very helpful if the US guys did something to improve the local area while they are there! Australia is very attractive strategically, as the sky is so clear here, America and Australia also launch regular satelites from there! (The American "live" satelite footage of the moon landing was actually broadcast from Parkes, Australia!) Ours is the Westminster System, we have the King as Head of State and a Governor General represents him here - he can sack our government, but it's mostly a friendly diplomatic association! 🤔
During the gulf war. The Australian satellite Aussat 2 found the scud missile launches and relayed the info to Pine Gap, then to planes over Iraq to blow up the launch sites in 15seconds
The US is actually smaller than China. The reason is the US also counts coastal waters as part of its landmass so it is kinda artificially larger than what it really is. Also because of this, if you remove Alaska and maybe Hawaii, then Australia is actually bigger than the lower 48 states part of the US. To find these correct measurements you gotta do searches with keywords that will fairly measure the US like other countries measure themselves by not including coastal waters.
Removing states from the country doesn't make sense. Well if we remove Western Australia and Tasmania then I'm sure a few other countries are bigger too.
@@TheCommodity That's not my point...just saying the 48 states that make up the main landmass of the US is a little smaller than Australia. And that even if Alaska and Hawaii are included the US (3,677,649 sq mi) is still smaller than China (3,705,407). All other measurements for the US include coastal and territorial waters (not lakes but sea and ocean)...only the US includes this, all other countries only measure land area.
What do we count water for other countries or just for hours? Because that wouldn't make sense either. So if we include coastal waters to let's say China or even Australia then wouldn't that make sense? But if we aren't doing that then that makes zero sense.
@@TheCommodity Only the US counts coastal and territorial waters in its area. No other country does this...which is why the US is 3rd and 4th position in country sizes. It's 3rd if the coastal and territorial waters are counted or 4th if just counting land area. I agree, it doesn't make sense.
5 eyes is a very important alliance and I’m glad to be on the in crowd. Australia benefits from having such close friends. I think the 5 eyes is with the NSA and British signals intelligence not MI6 and CIA directly, but I am sure info is disseminated accordingly.
FVEY has an automatic system for sharing of information to member states. There are also associated “third party” states that are not part of the automated system. The bulk of the unclassified intelligence is said to be shared on the Stone Ghost network, but I don’t think classified material is.
British signals is called GCHQ, its the equivalent of The NSA and the work virtually hand on glove, main sites in Cheltenham but down in Cornwall where I live we have GCHQ Bude, this is where the Atlantic cables come straight into Western Europe and a listening station takes what info it wants.
Actually the Australian political system is often called the "Washminster" system. So Washington + Westminster, based on both the American and British political systems. So the similarities go pretty deep. We are relatively new at the federal level, only becoming a federation in 1901
you have states that are disconnectd like alaska and hawaii, hence 2 sizes. and it annoys me this video because its an australian base americans work in.
So does Greenland but the map isn't exact. There is a website for it I just don't remember what it is. Considering the Earth is round maps are not good tells on size.
Population's probably going to have to grow for that. Like drastically, tax money is going to have to be much more abundant. That's the only way we are how we are.
I thought you were saying the roads not the position of the wheel. My bad! You are 100% right. Unless you are driving a McLaren F1 then you are in the center of the car no matter where you live... Not really helpful in this conversation but it is my favorite car lol.
Because Pine Gap doesn’t visibly affect Australians, the majority of people don’t even think about it, some don’t even know, and some don’t care.

Thank you for explaining the commonwealth portion. I didn't fully understand.

the us and its satellites are democracies on a surface level

The Menwith Hill (UK) site is the paired site with Pine Gap, covering the other half hemisphere; also run by the NSA.

There were lots of protests about Pine Gap back in the day ( 1970's).

There is a 14 eye grouping, and 9 eyes grouping [for example] -- but the five eyes are [in rugby parlance] the tight five!

Agree with pine gap , working with. America is so important to Australia’s defences
I agree as well, but it's not my country to say if I agree.
defences from who?

Just look at what we are up against, Mate I'm so glad that our 5 countries have come together in this way.
I knew about Pine Gap but really never bothered me
That was great. Sorted a few arguments.
Cleared up a lot of questions and topics.
He left out the best, typical Aussie bit. We haven't jacked up the rent after all these years. We still only charge you $1 a year for the land.
Antartica is a continent , America is a land mass.
US - CIA
UK - MI6
Aus - ASIS
Canada - CSIS
NZ - NZSIS
Hence 5 Is
hey. do you think that's the only secret american base in oz ???? ha
The usa pays aust an annual rent for Pine Gap.... ONE FULL GLASS OF WATER. to make it legal.

all English speaking countries are very peaceful countries. Just dont pick on one. cause you'll get into trouble with all of them >> that's a fact
You can bet that the Ukranian military are benefiting from the 5 eyes.
As an Australian i hope that one day our government starts serving our own interests rather than the US and becomes independent, removes US bases.
Population's probably going to have to grow for that. Like drastically, tax money is going to have to be much more abundant. That's the only way we are how we are.
The 5 Eyes are very dangerous to the world, must always keep tracks of their movements.
It is a dumb & a scary place unquote & the yanks drive on the left hand side of the road & we drive on the right
We don't drive on the left side. We are right side drivers. yall drive on the left. lol
