    Acuron is a restricted-use pesticide. Please read and follow label instructions.
    aTrippyFarmer and the crew are back to bring you more farming adventures! In this episode, Andy talks about a powerful herbicide platform-Acuron By Syngenta. The farm has made use of this herbicide for nearly a decade with great success. It’s worth checking out! Thanks for watching!
    Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
    It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
    We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

    A stainless steel nurse tank we bought a few years ago came with an agitation pipe. It has a 2 inch pipe welded horizontally parallel to the tank itself the entire length inside the tank. It is positioned about 1/4 of the way up the tank off to one side. So on the back of the tank it is at the 4:00 position and the front it would be at the 8:00 position. Along the bottom of the stainless steel pipe pointed towards the bottom of the tank is a row of 3/8 inch holes evenly spaced. I’m sure the holes add up to about 75 percent of the capacity of the 2 inch pipe to create back pressure and a row of jets. This is very effective as the liquids in the tank roll and mix everything off the bottom. It has no dead areas and works quick. It seem as to work great even if the tank is full or not and does not foam. Goodluck and good day.

      The system you described is a sparge tube. That is the gold standard of agitation, and it is what I really need in the tanker to help mix the load adequately.

    Andy we have on our tanker a 90° fitting where you have the 45° and nipple, it shoots the solution to the side and gets the tank "rolling" pretty well. But as far as atrazine the best way to keep it in solution is to use a sparge line. I put several of them in for the Equity when i worked at bierman welding. But they require alot more water to rinse thoroughly. I think the pipe going down to the bottom with a tee threaded onto it would work well, but it would need to be reinforced so the solution wouldn't break it after a few years of sloshing around.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the tip. I am afraid that I need to just go ahead and install a sparge tube and not waste any more money on an inferior system. It is a bit more complicated because I have a two-compartment tanker.

    • @timwestendorf8303
      @timwestendorf8303 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @aTrippyFarmer as long as you have the ability to dictate flow to front or back tank when agitating, it can be done fairly simply. If you need some help, I would be more than happy to help figure out a plan or install it. I know you usually have sigel welding work on stuff as I'm southeast of montrose IL, and their shop is quite a bit closer. Irregardless if you want to look me up, look up TDW Welding LLC

    We went through 2 deer’s high clearance sprayers. We switched to rogator. Best decision we ever did. It had way more torque. The Deere used to power out in wet spots where as the rogator would drive right through no issue. No matter what speed the rogator holds desired boom pressure flawlessly. The boom we also find is wayyyyy more stable. Not rocking g up and down on tbe ends all the time. Like the Deere. Maybe the new Deere had fixed many things. But we haven’t had any major issues with the rogator and we also never have gotten stuck with it either. Unlike the deeres. And we use the narrow tires. Just really happy with the sprayer.

    Generally speaking. Weather prediction updates are re-calculated every 6 hours. Local news weather broadcasts may break those 6 hour segments down into every 3 hours. So, basically any weather prediction after 6 hours is a crap shoot. Don't place your bet !!!

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard Eric Snodgrass say that a professional's ability to predict anything beyond like 2-3 days is purely a statistical guess. The weather is so dynamic that it is hard to continuously account for every variable into the future.

    Andy, I'm curious what the safety precautions are that you follow when handling/mixing those chemicals both personally and environmentally. Can you explain that in one of your future episodes? What kinds of training and certifications are required for handling and applying those chemicals? I notice you use industrial gloves as one form of PPE but what about eye coverage and aprons for splash protection? Thank-you. Take care and stay safe. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Best

    • @davedammitt7691
      @davedammitt7691 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Common sense is the best PPE.
      There is no one-size-fits-all. Road Crews who are laying asphalt with literally nothing above them wear hardhats. Why? Because some bean counter decided that that's what they needed to wear. Absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes you need to wear full gear. Sometimes you need absolutely nothing. Common sense should be your guide. If you're planning on walking 5 miles in 20 below zero weather, you probably need a whole lot of layers and a whole lot of protection. If you're walking 50ft to your mailbox, you can wear a t-shirt and shorts and be just fine.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The chemical label would indicate what PPE is required. I am sure that you need chemical-resistant gloves at a bare minimum. Most chemicals are fairly safe to handle, other than unknown long-term consequences. Products like Gramoxone, aka Paraquat, are much more serious. I've heard that one small sip of gramoxone can kill a person, so I would think that would technically justify more PPE.

    Would buying products in bulk and mix yourself save money over time?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it would. I'd guess there would be at least $5-10 per acre in additional savings. Our issues would be needing climate controlled storage. Most chemicals are supposed to freeze, and a lot of products would need bought in the winter. These newer automated mixing systems would make on-farm mixing a breeze!

    • @ronkeking97
