  • Puppy Spay and Neuter Aftercare and Exercise // It’s time for puppy spay or puppy neuter surgery and you need tips on how to exercise a puppy after surgery! Puppy surgery aftercare can go a lot better with the right dog exercise. Exercise after surgery has to be limited so your puppy doesn’t get injured and rip their stitches. Talk to your veterinarian about the best time to spay or neuter your dog and what restrictions they will have after surgery. Your puppy spay aftercare and exercise can be done at home. Post-surgery care will include physical and mental exercise in the form of canine enrichment and game training. You can even teach your pup to love the recovery dog cone. In this video, we will discuss what to expect after your dog’s surgery and some great games to play to beat puppy boredom.

      1) to keep in mind that puppy may need to use bathroom more then usual up to 48 hrs after surgery due to iv fluids.
      2) to only walk dog on leash for two weeks after
      3) games to play that shouldn't be too strenuous.

      @@Carolinagirl1028 I was so nervous like you. The surgery went really well. I got prepared and I ordered a surgery onesie from Amazon. My vet recommended it. So when I went to pick her up she was very calm and looked so out of it. The first 2 days she mostly slept and was very calm. Every day I noticed she would feel better every day. I think the onesie really stopped her from running and jumping. Since we got if I put a dress on her or any clothes, she would be still, lol. She really didn't like it. So actually having the surgery onesie was a blessing. After the 14th day I took the onesie off and she was running and so happy! You will do great taking care of her. Wishing a speedy recovery for your puppy.

With your video I AM more relaxed (trust me a sheepadoddle will pick ones vibe instantly and if you are stressed thats it... hell wil freeze over) helping my dog to relax, that made me to realize that I was actualy part of the problem and not all the dog's fault. Excellent Video refresher course!
    I am a senior that has had many dogs spayed and neutered over the years! I have always had 2 working dogs because I live on a large property. They both share the duties on the farm. One of my dogs passed recently and I decided to get a new companion for both of us! I now have a 4 year old dog and a new puppy that is going in to be neutered in 2 weeks. I needed to refresh my memory on what to expect again! The difference for me is this will be the first dog that I will be training by myself. I also recently lost my wife and didn't realize that everything would be different when there is no one else to help. I love the fact that my 4 year old Aussie loves his new workmate!
    I am going to try and keep both dogs occupied with the games you described in this video until my new pup recovers.

    This information was very helpful! I tried looking up information before my 7 month mini dachshund was spayed but didn't find anything as helpful as this (maybe I didn't search long enough, ha!). Most helpful was the reminder about using a puppy pen and the Adaptil collars. We are on day 5 of recovery and my puppy has a seroma from being too active. I'll be getting a light sedative from the vet today because it's hard to keep her calm. Particularly because we have a 4 yr. old pit-lab and they both feed off of each others energy.

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you! we tried the light sedative last night and 1/4 of the pill it didn't seem to do much so I gave her another 1/4 (the pill bottle said 1/4 - 1/2 every 12 hrs). Then she seemed to be even more wild. So I will be sticking with the 1/4 pill every 12 hrs going forward since the 1/2 seemed to make her more energetic for some reason (keep in mind this is at bedtime around 10p/11p). Her incision looks good though, except for the swelling around it, so that's good!

    We adopted our Pomeranian a month ago. She has really bad separation anxiety, we’ve been working on crate training since day one but she hasn’t improved much. She will scream and cry for hours, scratching it and begging to get out, and basically acting like she hasn’t seen me in a million years when I let her out. I genuinely feel like her freaking out in her crate for 14 days will be worse off, because she will just be scratching and screaming and freaking out, rather than having down time. I have a bed that’s too high for her to jump on or off, and I like to leave her on my bed when I’m doing things. She’s very calm on it and I think she should definitely be ok. And for the rest of the house I can just have her on a leash when I need to go downstairs to do something. I just don’t think keeping her in a kennel for 14 days will work out at all. But for after she heals, do you guys have any advice to help with crate training? She. Freaks. Out. For hours. And no, I 100% completely ignore her crying, not even going ‘it’s ok don’t cry’ so I haven’t been rewarding her cries. So idk.

      Whenever your pup is unsupervised, especially when they have gone through surgery, they should be in the crate so there is less chance of them hurting themselves. It's best to drain their energy proactively with enrichment and games so they are able to rest.

      Yes, if you pup is able to use their paws/nails to scratch the incision it can easily catch and rip a stitch out. Most pups don't have this issue for a spay or neuter surgery because the incision is much lower.

    I'm seeking a bit of advice regarding my puppy. We pick her up Wednesday but the shelter has insisted that she cannot be adopted out until she is spayed. I'm concerned about caring for her post-op when she has only ever known living on a concrete floor (no toilet training/no crate training). She'll be introduced to an entirely new environment, and people she has only met once - on day one post-op! Which I'm worried will be a horribly scary experience for her since she is also a rescue puppy.
    We also have about an hour and a half drive home the day of her surgery, poor girl.
    Would really appreciate some tips!!

    What are your recommendations for us? We have sisters (golden doodles). They always stay in playpen together, and they sleep in the same crate at night. My concern is that they will be too inclined to stimulate one another, and even though they can’t reach their own stitches, won’t they want to lick their sister’s? In other words, should we separate them for the 10 to 14 days. They are almost 5 months old now. Thanks!

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We never ever put 2 dogs in the same crate. It’s important for each dog to have their own space. As they grow and mature they will potentially fight for space and being in small close quarters would not be safe.
      When they are little we want them to have as much separate time as possible so hyper-bonding doesn’t become too big of an issue for you. They should be crated separately, trained separately (before they can be trained together), walked separately and have their own playtime and downtime as well as one on one time with you.
      Of course, we want them to interact and play together but littermates that don't get enough time away from each other become significantly bonded together and you will likely be the third wheel in the relationship. We want you to be the focus so they pay attention to you and follow commands when you ask. Dogs that don’t get enough time apart tend to only focus on each other.
      As they mature to about 2 years you may see more conflict between the two arise. Make sure to start training the day they come home and follow the advice above so you don’t run into this littermate syndrome issue.
      Many breeders refuse to allow littermates to go to the same home for this reason. Unfortunately, not all breeders understand the severity of this issue and haven’t done behavior modification once the problems have escalated.

    • @clarcrab2
      @clarcrab2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Oksana Gutierrez While I appreciate the above advice, since they HAVE been together for 5 months now, and will be neutered soon, does she recommend NOT doing it at the same time? And although, with the goal being to begin separating them, it can’t be done overnight. Is surgery too stressful a time to begin separating them? Good luck with your chihuahuas!
