This is my home mountain. I was stoked to see the title in my feed. Kirkwood's terrain is A+ IMO. The amenities are a little lacking but the mountain makes up for the lack of investment. Sorry the conditions were flat and icy. We are between storms. Glad to see you riding the terrain I am too old and scared to go on. You should come back on a day when the snow is better. Also, maybe they could refill the paper towel dispensers in the bathroom and keep the restaurants open a little later.

Kirkwood is one of my favorites but you definitely need to time where you ski. Being real with it and showing that conditions aren't always ideal is part of the journey.
I loved Kirkwood the way you go up to a ridge and you can ski it down over the back, side, or front. I'm a older female retired and you are brave! Kirkwood is my local and favorite. Def recommend later season only really need to hit chair 4, 10 and 6 you can ski the entire mountain. Even off chair 6 to skiirs sight there is another set of bowls. Kirkwood is def the hardest overall mountain in the SN mountains.

I’m usually more of a ski the green/blue groomers till I have a feel for the resort, then to the difficult terrain. Please never change! So exciting to see you rip these mountains. Nice work getting out on that stuff in those conditions. You should consider coming back to the Tahoe area in the spring. Snow gets really fun. Look for high pressure to park itself over California and bring some spring wax. Could get a nice run of bluebird days.

Watching you trying to figure out the mountain, I was dying to show you my spots. Ex: Fawn Ridge trees on the backside (after a little hike) might've still held some pow, even on a crusty day like that. Don't give up, on a good day, Kirkwood absolutely rules!
Went to Tahoe area resorts years ago. I think it is kind of funny how areas around there like to post the skull and crossbones signs. Rarely see them at other places. I guess it is effective in dissuading those that might have been on the fence.
I was on CVN 65 in the early 80's. With all the Cali Mini vans coming up they definitely need the warning signs!! They park in the middle of the road to put chains on and go sledding, they don't even know how to get on a lift properly so they cause them to slow down all the time and the next two weeks is the Asian invasion in Tahoe!!
I've been skiing Kirkwood for 50 years now, the best lines on the mountain are : skiers right of Jims into Chamoix, Jims into Fireball, Headwaters to Norms Nose, anything under The Sisters, anything out past Glove Rock, The Wave, Covered Wagon, Fawn Ridge, 99 Steps hike to Thimble Peak then over to Larrys Lip into Hells Delight. This year was a lot like 2010-2011 and yea you need to hit it with in a couple days of a storm, the sun bakes it pretty quickly, but as long as you stay on the north facing aspects the snow is usually good especially up high. Many pole length powder days there in my days there. I'll say this much, probably the best kept secret in the west as the extensive ridge line offers so many aspects, they just need more lifts to access couple locations, and some more high speed quads.
I always hear Kirkwood included in the Tahoe conversation but as a 'just barely' and you definitely feel like it is a different place than Heavenly or some of the resorts on the lake. Awesome terrain though, I agree. In the lower 48 it is definitely in the top 5 of the resorts I've visited for terrain- can't rate it more precisely as I've only been twice and most recent was over 5 years ago. So many resorts have hidden runs or terrain that depends on snow conditions that making a fair comparison gets difficult.
02:50 Love this shot! As a Equipment Junkie, I always appreciate seeing what sticks everybody else is riding on. Also, I've seen the Stoke Crows in several of you Stoke Sessions. I'd love to hear some chairlift chat on you evolving impressions and why you pick the Crows over the Elks on any given day. Love your videos, dude. Keep it up!!
Sick! I'm a tahoe local and the wood is my favorite Epic resort. I live 5 minutes from the heavenly lifts but I'll still drive over an hour (or more with traffic) for a pow day! Weekdays almost never crowded and like you saw you can get right off chair 10 and drop into some truly gnarly terrain. Don't sleep on chair 6 either (Cornice express) because there is some nice stuff there as well. Sorry you had an off day and conditions weren't the best. Hope you'll be able to get back out here this year and get the full experience!
At the beginning, where you pulled over and had the shot overlooking the valley with clouds. Reminded me of driving up to Yosemite back in the day. My dad was AF pilot stationed in Merced twice. We would drive up to Yosemite often in the 70s. So often the valley was covered in clouds and we would drive up and look back over the valley. Looked like the ocean, of clouds. Beautiful
Skied Kirkwood within a few years north of the turn of the century. Was attending a conference in Anaheim during a February dump and couldn't resist the temptation; snow was much softer. More importantly, going west instead of east from the chair that took you to get to the wall provided the same steepness with cleaner lines. Was it closed? One thing I never understood about Tahoe resorts is they seem to favor south facing slopes. Heavenly is different, but still few of their slopes face north. You would think with Kirkwood at the south end of the lake, more slopes would face north toward the lake. Another reason why the snow is so much better in Utaaaaahhhhh.
i actually saw you in the parking lot on Monday but didn’t get the chance to stop and say hi. recognized the armadas and the van and you in your gear and i was like “oh shit that’s lucas!”
So much fun when you throw yourself into a line full speed, only to find ice on the other side. Have had a few looooonnnnggggg side slips hoping to catch good snow before getting into the trees. Pucker factor was high. Also love the outro shot coming back for the camera. Ive put a few hiking videos together that have the same thing. It's a ton of work. Les Stroud would be proud.
i dont think its fair to say the wall at kirkwood isnt very steep, carlos. im sure kicking horse is very steep, as well. but the wall at kirkwood is one of the most steepest pieces of terrain in all of tahoe. thanks for watching.
Sick video! I’ve been waiting for you to make it out to kirkwood! By the way the run you skied were you were confused where you were was the sisters. I am actually skiing kirkwood today looks like I just missed you!
Another sick video my dude. The third person segue clips seem like such a pain to go grab your camera after you already hiked past it lol. Keep doing what you do these videos are the best
you are inspiring me to ski (as I do in the winter). CT is lame. but I went to Mohawk Mountain yesterday to warm up, the 27th is Vermont, Possibly Okemo. u da man!!!!
Sunnyside gets us all once. Once. Only ice rink in the Sierra's that looks like fresh powder. Usually closed for the day after big storms, sits in the sun all day, then opens the next morning. SKI Magazine rated Kirkwood "The Best 2000 foot vertical mountain in the U.S." It skiis like a much bigger mountain. It also gets more snow than any other mountain in NorCal. It has more Expert Terrain than novice.
Wish you come back soon when there are more people on The Wall. It's definitely terrifying when there is nobody but rocks and cliffs around you, which is very common in late afternoon. Last time I saw a few advanced skiers jumping off the gnarliest chute but I didn't have the skill and courage to follow them. I believe you could safely do these runs and shoot more crazy videos.
That's why there was no buddy out there... all the crust. I've never been there but they say it gets some of the most snow in the Tahoe area when it snows. It also had some affordable home building lots and might still have some left, like very affordable for Tahoe. Still, tryout Homewood if you want an easy day when there is a lot of snow, I usually hit it up when the other bigger resorts are too crowded, it's super small and might not fight your desire for difficult terrain but everyone local loves it the most, something about it... I've also been stuck in powder up to my neck at Homewood... not sure many can say that... took me maybe an hour to get 100 feet to the lift... also I've never even tried to ski Tahoe before Feb and usually went from Feb through March for a weekend or a couple weeks... a quick Google search says that Jan Feb March are the snowiest months in Tahoe, but the weather has been weird since about 2008. The best thing for Tahoe is to go for a few weeks and get lucky and get hit by a midweek storm where nobody can get there from San Fran until the next weekend so you have it all to yourself pretty much. Keep up the cool videos and I can't wait for you to get a AWD sprinter with some knobby tires some day!
thanks man! appreciate the contiuned support and insight with the mountains. an AWD sprinter is a bit out of reach haha but would be sick to really chase the storms.
@@LucasCatania17 Your seems to be doing great, I love my Jeep, but crashed in a snow bank on black ice the first time at Squaw. Look at your subscribers growing actually very fast.
You have to be super careful in those conditions with a new resort especially when skiing by yourself. That terrain with those flat light/snow conditions is so difficult it will beat your legs up very fast.
leg fatigue isnt really an issue for me, more just all of the cliff bands and unknown terrain but definitely gotta be careful! i ski by myself 99% of my career
Lucas you skied really well, sounded way firm. I think the 106 is a really good all mountain ski when you dont have a 100% powder day. Must be hard to leave the JJs in the van.... : )
Kirkwood is the only mountain I’ve ever called it quits on due to shit snow conditions. Absolute iciest, miserable snow of my life. I lasted 90 minutes. I know it’s a great mountain but my experience was so bad, and when you combine that with how remote it is to get to… I doubt I’ll ever be back.
Sick one less Cidiot on a mountain that you have to have balls to ski all the comments I’m here for city folks you can just tell by their comments you gotta be able to ride shitty snow to be able to ride good snow
Was pretty legit seeing you at Jupe today! I hope I didn't make you late or slow you down too much! I had planned to hit Jupe today ever since they announced it was open earlier this week. Funny coincidence you happened to be there lol.
Lucas, how did you get those stunning drone shots? What drone do you use and how are you able for it to track you when your driving? Also, that cloud inversion shot was magnificent. Awesome shot.
I love Kirkwood. Saying that, like what alot of people have said, it's a resort that is not very good when the snow turns to ice. After a storm though, it's grade A terrain
You got to be able to ski itall Chong that’s why it takes years to get good you just a new be at the wood even if you’ve been there 5 times chair five and four maybe even seven sound about right for you guys?
how do you get the drone footage while driving? Do you have someone else that does that for you or do you have an app that allows the drone to follow you? I always like those shots.

you are inspiring me to ski (as I do in the winter). CT is lame. but I went to Mohawk Mountain yesterday to warm up, the 27th is Vermont, Possibly Okemo. u da man!!!!
lets goo dude. sounds like you have some fun trips planned!
@Lucas Catania let's goooo bro!!!!
Yes. I'm stoked. Vermont has a ton of snow. Next week baby!!!!
so cool to see my local mountain get some love on the channel!!
sick mountain dude!!
One thing for sure you end up in some of the most precarious spots I just love this what great adventure at every turn
haha i try not to but always end up that way
Sunnyside gets us all once. Once. Only ice rink in the Sierra's that looks like fresh powder. Usually closed for the day after big storms, sits in the sun all day, then opens the next morning.
SKI Magazine rated Kirkwood "The Best 2000 foot vertical mountain in the U.S."
It skiis like a much bigger mountain. It also gets more snow than any other mountain in NorCal. It has more Expert Terrain than novice.
Yay after all this you are finally at our favorite hidden gem! Hope you enjoyed it!
it was awesome dude!
I believe you could safely do these runs and shoot more crazy videos.
thanks man!
There are fun hits and stashes all over that mountain. 🤙
Damn I shoulda shredded Kirkwood instead of Heavenly! Stocked to see you enjoy the mountain, it’s a gnarly one!
for sure dude! scared the crap outta me haha
Kirkwood is such a beautiful mountain. ❤. Blessings Lucas. Merry Christmas. ❤🎄🙏
merry christmas!!
Favorite mountain
sick mountain for sure!
Love the content. Skied all my local Tahoe favorites.
thank you!
Safe travels back home Lucas, Merry Christmas!
thank you steve!!
Look at your subscribers growing actually very fast.
that drone shot of luna on top of clouds was insane😍
haha yes man loved that moment
Sick video Lucas 🤟🏼🤟🏼 conditions looked a bit rough though
thanks nate! was a bit challenging but thats the name of the game
new territory same stoke!
love it dude ahah
Yep, locals resort. Locals definitely wouldn’t go on a day like that. Hopefully you’ll be able to experience it on a midweek powder day sometime.
Dude. Just bought the stoke elks all because of you! Headed to Lake Tahoe right now! Fired up to test these out altho I know they are best for pow
The Wood.
The filming looks great
thanks jack!
Another great video lucas, sucks that the conditions were the way they were. Hope you come back soon bro
I will man. Thanks for watching!
Hey Lucas it's sometimes first times can be the best times
for sure man!
I love the part about the illusion.. it looks good from afar but far from good
yup. a bit deceptive
Catwalks are the bane to great skiers existence, I swear ive almost broken my legs a few times because the steep hides the catwalks.
Any day it's not windy is a good day at Kirkwood.
Lucas you skied really well, sounded way firm. I think the 106 is a really good all mountain ski when you dont have a 100% powder day. Must be hard to leave the JJs in the van.... : )
haha thanks chaz. tough for me to leave the stoke elks behind. i have so much confidence in them
For sure understand the confidence factor.
Ah understood. I’m sure it’s amazing with fresh snow!
Sick one less Cidiot on a mountain that you have to have balls to ski all the comments I’m here for city folks you can just tell by their comments you gotta be able to ride shitty snow to be able to ride good snow
I love watching you bro
thank you man
Was pretty legit seeing you at Jupe today! I hope I didn't make you late or slow you down too much! I had planned to hit Jupe today ever since they announced it was open earlier this week. Funny coincidence you happened to be there lol.
For sure man! It was sick meeting you!
Lucas, how did you get those stunning drone shots? What drone do you use and how are you able for it to track you when your driving? Also, that cloud inversion shot was magnificent. Awesome shot.
Thank you! I’m using the DJI mavic pro and am manually flying while driving
Too icy 🥶 lol
packed powder
I love Kirkwood. Saying that, like what alot of people have said, it's a resort that is not very good when the snow turns to ice. After a storm though, it's grade A terrain
ah gotcha. i thought maybe id still have some soft snow up there
You got to be able to ski itall Chong that’s why it takes years to get good you just a new be at the wood even if you’ve been there 5 times chair five and four maybe even seven sound about right for you guys?
@@daveteteak8210 I'm fine with any terrain. It doesn't mean that I'm delusional about how conditions at Kirkwood can be.
Where’s was everyone Doing Great keep it Going Yaa 👊🏾👊🏾
Thank you!
That shot of the clouds is fucking epic
yes man had to pull over haha
I went skiing yesterday in angel fire but couldn’t slow down so I would fall everytime after I got down the hill I did the snow plow to
stoked to hear you getting out though man
@@LucasCatania17 finally got the snow plow down and can actually ski without falling it’s a lot of fun!
how do you get the drone footage while driving? Do you have someone else that does that for you or do you have an app that allows the drone to follow you? I always like those shots.
no i am just manually flying and driving.
Be carefull ,you seem's to take more and more risk spending half of the season in a cast is not fun at all.All those cliff and all are impresive but i want to see your journey all winter long and more hikking this summer.take care dude and thx for the vid.
It's a grind, but someone has to do it!
thats the truth!!
Is that lift really called Wagon Wheel? I thought it was Chair 10 aka "The Wall," but I have only been to Kirkwood once...
