How Prada Turned Famous Actors Into Models & Villains

- The Prada Fall 2012 Menswear collection saw Miuccia Prada do the unthinkable, she asked celebrities not only to attend her show, but to make up a section of the models who would walk it. With some of the greatest actors of the screen and stage, like Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman, Adrien Brody, & Jamie Bell there were notable names, who were tasked with carrying themselves in the manner of malicious villains in a film. Between the setting at the Fondazione Prada, the clothing that tapped the history of traditional tailoring, and the exploration of power through menswear, there was just such a feeling too the whole experience. And then in 2024 it was viral on TikTok, where the collection and it's premise was viewed millions of times and be dubbed the "Prada Villains" show.

I love that Prada put so much effort into creating hype around a men's fashion show, I am so excited for men to get the same level of creativity applied to their clothes as women get!
Prada is quite one of the Single Men's wear that actualy try to make something for mens rather than just basic tshirt, shirts, trousers, sport pants. They actualy give personality to clothes, they inspire me alot, i wish i could affrod them tho.. maybe one day lol. Also damn i regret getting tattoos, i really wish i could have been a model for them.

This fashion show is the only one my husband hasn't got bored during and after it he was like "that's how I want to dress"

The Haute LeMode villain narratives are everything.
I like that the actors looked like they were having fun and the actors has sexier way of walking thank the models. Garret Hedlum’s walk 👩🏾🍳💋
I honestly try for a whole year to mimic the style of walk but i always start to get shy and i can't even walk proprely lol, and i do that in public which is worse. But i figured out aslong i'm confident, i can even walk into a wall, but if i do it confident, it looks great. So the key is the Confidence..

You truly elevate by intellectually looking at fashion. I hope the fashion houses realize the valuable service you provide. In this case Prada, should be over the moon. You have the power words and thought. And so much fun
I also wonder if Muccia Prada was referencing the Teddy Boy sub-culture of the 1950s/1960s. They had a very neo-Victorian/Edwardian dandy style of dress. It would certainly make sense with the colored sunglasses, though that could be the influence of Mod style (the actor Steve McQueen’s style would be a good example of this) on the collection as well.
Yeah I just left a stupidly long comment on that. It's the first thing I noticed. Especially the models giving off that kinda attitude as well. Maybe a cockiness in the walk and super confident look at me kinda thing.

Now, this is in my opinion Prada's Best menswear collection she's ever done! I loved everything and if I had the money I'd buy all of it! Adrian's blood red coat is to kill for, literally. The actors were great and also, if anybody remembers this, William Dafoe has modeled for Prada's ads many years before, so he's pretty much the House's menswear ambassador.

Jamie Bell played a villain in the 2011 movie "Retreat" with Cillian Murphy and Thandiwe Newton.
I really love this collection. I wanted to mention that one of the things that really stood out to me inspiration/influence wise straight away. Was the whole late Beatnik into Mod aesthetic both in the men's and women's collection but, especially the men's.
The layering of the coats the high necks and polo necks. With the layered sweaters. The fur coat in the video looked like a plush padded Parker. When I went back and looked at the women's collection the make up with the white face and black/brown eyes screamed Mary Quant. It also plays into that gender element as Mods played with that a lot. The men getting into using make up mainly eye shadow. The women being more androgynous often wearing 3 piece suits like the men, flat shoes and short haircuts. I mean Vidal Sassoon and Quant practically corned the market.
You could see a lot of the models in the women's collection with flat shoes and the again layered long tailored coats over trousers and the straight lines. I see a lot of Cardin and Courrèges in the cut and patterns especially for the women. Miuccia would have been a late teen into her 20's when the mod thing was truly hitting it's stride. I think that's what I like about it so much. The 1920's jazz thing fits as well, modernists was meant to refer to the fact that they listened to modern Jazz rather than traditional.
Sorry this is so long it's my first comment here, I love how layered your videos are and how much research you do. I always find them so interesting.
The rugs are just copies of slavic embroidery patterns mostly used in cross stich borders. Traditionally, they made on white fabric with thick black and red threads and are held by two concentric wooden hoops. The white fabric is like a large cross stich weave in a perfect orthogonal system, and the embroidery follows the exact orthogonality. This means the designs can easily be copied from a smaller to a larger scale and this knowledge is transferred between generations just by the simplicity of looking at past designs and mapping out the grid. Of course the designs vary in complexity and color variation but this one comes most closely to the russian type.

Your amount of research and knowledge is amazing and inspiring! This is one of my favorite menswear collections of all time. The Jersey Shore “PECS” situation I do agree, but I also think when you look at Armani, Ferragamo, Zegna or Dolce and Gabbana, they tend to have more masculine tailored suits, then say Parisian houses or Prada typically. Thank you!

If you like Gary Oldman playing villains, I can HIGHLY recommend 'Léon: The Professional'. He is one of my favorite actors ever! 🤩
I was going to say the same thing! He's an UBER villain in that movie because he's supposed to be one of the good guys (a DEA agent), but his character is a murderous drug addict and dealer who's gone totally insane due to his drug use and he's hiding his crimes behind his badge and office. His performance as a mentally unhinged "cop gone bad" is STUNNINGLY BRILLIANT in this movie, and I've been in love with him as an actor ever since.
He was also a terrific villain in True Romance!

When I first saw the red rug, I immediately thought of the Saudi Sadu pattern! It’s a heritage in Saudi and these patterned wool were created by bedouins to use them as dessert tents or as we call it “Khaima”. Look it up to see the resemblance yourself (there’s a lot of colors but mostly its black, red, and white)
It’s amazing that there’s a lot of similarities in these patterns across different cultures!

I'm so glad it's having a moment! One of the few men's shows I actually watched all the way through and loved a lot of the designs. I thought the rug design was meant to mirror the designs on the bags and shoes of the women's line for that season. That floral motif was in a lot of the shoes and bags and are some of my fave Prada designs.

I noticed a lot of early menswear vintage was the use of combing brown and grey colors. Love how that is referenced here. When Miuccia does classic modernism, she nails it. This is my favorite collection since her F/W 2001 collection.

When I saw the carpet it immediately reminded me of an old Arabic pattern you can search Sadu Fabric Design - Geometric Pattern and other variations of it and you can see the heavy resemblance

you can find this motifs on romanian traditional carpets too :) actually, these geometric shapes can be find in almost every culture around the globe, symbolizing -for example- the tree of life, fertility, growth
