Square Enix pioneered the term HD-2D, but do you really know what it means and which games are considered HD-2D?

Do you think texture based collision is possible?
Like, can I have it so it does some perception check to see if you're touching a texture if so apply collision?
I want to make it so textures have transparent portions you can pass through
There's different collision settings on the sprites you can use. Haven't tried this yet but I think what you're looking for should be possible@@binkbonkbones3402
Link doesn't work
I hate the HD 2d remakes and most modern 2d games, don't look right to me. Like metruod dread is OK. Really liked bloodstained. Mario wonder is fine coz the art is so good. But like streets of rage 4, no thx. If one wanted to make a near clone of a saturn/ps1 Era game like rpgs, symphony of the night (there is a guy making sotn on the genesis currently looks dope) what engine would you say?
I see unity mentioned, maybe I'll look up games made on it. I wonder if an engine exist for my desire? I don't even want to look up this revival sega has planned, as I'll probably be disappointed. Itching for some jrpg of the 32bit Era (I'd play FF bit I don't like the remake style(the switch eshop I see a star ocean game on sale that looks good not much else)
Gonna end up just replaying segacd rpgs, Saturn and ps1 since I boycotted ps1 coz of its successful propaganda mic drop victory. Which led me to totally missing ps2 Era thinking it was all 3d bs like dreamcast, but apparently it had some last gasp 2d stuff, gonna check ps2 out soon.
I feel like they shouldn't own the term 'hd-2d' like no one should own the terms '2d' or '3d'.
They same could be said with Shadow Of Mordor Nemesis system.
@@joeyoung9596owning a system you created and owning a term are two completely different things. It’s like if someone trademark the term first person shooter, wtf else would you call them then?
you're lucky they dont own the artstyle
The term will die off.
what about 2D HD?
Need some hd 2D sci-fi/cyber punk in my life
Anno mutationem
@@serpentnu3047 the paper animations threw me off not enough articulation
Shhh... Just don't call it that
Hol up DRAGON QUEST 3 GETTING A HD 2D REMAKE????
OH HELL YEAH
In progress
I Wonder what consoles will be launched for? Or most important will it be launched on West?
@@megamewtwox193It should be.
@@megamewtwox193of course nin switch
I like the story of dragon quest but I hate the first person battle system. Feel like dragon quest needs to get away from the dungeon crawler battle system. Feel same about earthbound.
Rather than forcibly remaking old games into 3D and destroying the atmosphere of the work, this technology is used to preserve the atmosphere of the time and play with beautiful graphics.
Not to be confused with another marketing term "Hi-Pixel Art". Something like Owlboy comes to mind. These are the games that are REALLY HD-2D. They are also 1000x harder to create.
hd2d isnt too hard, (if you have unreal engine), you can literally just add a plugin to the engine called Paper2d
Hi-Bit?
These are not hard at all to make it's like making any other type of game, prove me wrong and explain something that would make it harder
I almost forgot about Owlboy becaus eI'v ebeen stuck in that pirate ship boss fight for MONTHS and haven't tried since. Being so close to the ending and not being able to beat that boss even with a guide is frustrating af.
Square Enix did something really right with this art style
I’ve always wanted them to do this with the 3rd generation of Pokémon
If X and Y hadn't jumped to a full 3D model, they would've probably tried this HD-2D first before Square Enix even thought of it.
@@_Just_Another_GuyThat would've been a nice timeline to be in.
God if only Pokemon made a game with this style! That would be amazing.
I really like the artstyle but back when octopath was announced I instantly said that we already have a name for this... 2.5D cause games have been doing this for a while. Though not always pixel art and with as cool shaders as octopath.
Cause there is paper mario and danganronpa as examples that quickly come to mind.
Unless HD 2D is specifically talking about the use of lighting/shading effects on 2D?
Yes HD 2D actually is mostly about the post processing and using modern lighting.
But in the end it's just a marketing term they created.
2.5D is actually a quite confusing term since it seems like everybody thinks it means something different.
Some would say street fighter 4 or donkey kong country returns is a 2.5D game, which I agree with.
So there isn't really a way to differentiate 2.5D games that use 3D models from 2.5D games that use sprites by using that term.
2.5d is usually already used for isometric games
@@HorsiMusic That's literally just isometric. Unless you mean like how Ragnarok Online did their Isometric 2.5D style with 3d models and not purely pixel art isometric like simcity.
Untrue, I believe 2.5D actually refers to games with 3D graphics but 2D gameplay, such as Street Fighter IV and Viewtiful Joe.
I think 2.5D are 2D games that create a faux 3D effect, like Kirby 64
Ys: the Oath in Felghana is one of my favourite videogames of all time and arguably uses a similar base technique of 2D sprites within a 3D environment, and it pushes that style to the max with amazingly designed levels and bosses. I'm learning Godot so I can try and take what I love about that game and turn it into my own style!
good idea hope you can create your art style
I love this art style. Gorgeous.
I want a pokemon remake with this art style
This will be the best Pokemon game, especially compared to the new one
anno mutationem is a real nice one that came out recently :D
The sprite is nice i just wish they use less keyframe and use more frame by frame in their sprite animation
Pretty underrated game. The style and graphics were pretty appealing
Wow, love this art style and didn’t even realize that it was Unreal🤯
The first" hd-2d" game I ever recognized was pokemon black & white. I have been captured by the whole world and I'm glad to find out there's a term for it now.
I love your work and videos. Thanks for the great content. I wish we had more creators like you.
Thank you so much :D
wish you the best an hope to learn a lot from your vids!
Thank you :D
Niiice
Wish there was a setting to turn down the bloom in these games. It's way too bright for me :(
They need to make a Pokémon game in HD-2D 😱
I didn't know, and now I do. Thanks much.
I want Pokemon like this
HD 2D is the style game freak was supposed to do
Use 2d-HD XD

It’s a beautiful style
Reminds me of 3d dot heroes. It didn't actually use sprites but it had that look of having low red graphics mixed with more modern post processing effects
Thanks interesting! Thanks! You have a really helpful channel ;)
Thank you so much :)
It looks so cool. It's beautiful
Anybody know the names of some of the games shown? A lot of them look really good!
I dont know all of them, but some of them are Octopath Traveler, Sacrifice, Dragon Quest 3 remake, and Triangle Strategy. I also recommend Live A Live
Hey, all games are mentioned in detail in this video
th-cam.com/video/wreOjWVGkys/w-d-xo.html
i thought this was called 2.5D (pixel art characters in a 3D environment) which also kind of looks like this
Some people like to call it that, but AFAIK 2.5D has never been an official term and is also very vague.
A game like Donkey Kong Country Returns or Street Fighter 4 would also fall under 2.5D for most people simply because the gameplay is locked to 2 dimensions even though they use 3D models.
HD-2D is just a marketing term, but the official Documentation of Unreal Engine calls these types of games with 2D sprites in a 3D world 2D/3D Hybrids.
@@CobraCode oh ok, didnt know that, i guess the more i know
It’s like when Wizards of the Coast trademarked Trading Card Games, so people started making Collection Card Games
Tremendo video! Excelente información y forma de presentar. 👏👏👏 Creo que una vez leí que querían "reintroducir" al Guacamayo glauco pero en realidad era una de sus parientes más cercanos para que pueda cumplir su rol ecológico
That's actually called 2.5D, like first Doom games.
Pokémon like this would be awesome
HD 2d has to do with texture resolution.. omg... who would have thought :O
The term HD-2D is just a marketing gimmick. The game form in this style is called 2.5 D art. The main elements are 2D sprites/2D style but set in a 3D space or with heavy use of parallax.
The only HD-2D graphics I liked so far are Eiyuden Chronicle and Star Ocean 2 Remake
When I hear HD 2D I think of Disgaea 5. Now thats real HD
Waiting for that Dragon quest 3 to come out
14:17 oh i know exactly what happened here. In RPG maker, the sprites are organized in tiles. Some of the premade assets have some enemies that have static poses, or just have walking sprites on one direction. Thing is, if you are using one of these sprites, there is a box you need to check for the sprite to remain the same, otherwise depending on the direction you talk to the sprite, it may change entirely. I am not familiar with this engine specifically (I use XP) but it looks like this is what happened.
Edit: oh dang, someone already said this, should have scrolled more lol
I love this style
The Indy game Elysian Shadows was doing the HD 2D style first
HD-2D makes me think of a scaled up pixel art from 32x32 to 320x320.
What’s a good recommendation on a cpu for these games.
IM SORRY DQ3 HD-2D REMAKE??? HELL YESS!!
Yes!
Super excited about it... but sadly there haven't been any news on it for about 2 years now, so I'm a bit worried.
I love this style personally. I want to do the same. I'm using Godot though. Currently thinking of the best way to do the 3D side. DO I keep it more pixelated, or higher res.
cant wait to play dragon quest! glad i didn't finish the original version of the 3rd DQ serie
Would love to see metal Gear 1&2 in 2D HD
they need to do pokemon this way
Imagine if pokemon with hd-2d style ❤️
I actually wanna make a prototype for that once I find the time!
I wish
Nintendo keeps on suing fan game creators who did . Stick to the offline black market .
I feel like Golden Sun did this 22 years ago. Maybe it wasn’t “HD” per say but it sure felt like it was
Might develop a p2p mmo style arpg complete with gathering skills in "2d-hd" so it's well optimized. There seems to be many issues in the mmo genre up to and including just server costs and the fact that some people want to play single player so why not make a game that has it all and make it premium b2p?
I think that's a great idea and was actually also thinking something similar.
Many indie devs wanna make an MMORPG without understanding how hard that is to make and even if you were to somehow miraculously pull that off, like you said, server cost, customer support cost and things like that would make it impossible.
I also think you could probably scratch the same itch an MMO does in a more simple multiplayer game that maybe features up to 5 players at a time in an open world.
There's a Chinese game that released recently that uses this style.
Wandering Sword.
Makes me wonder how the game grandia would look like with some modern lighting, cause the Sega Saturn original is still to me one of the best looking 2d over 3d kinds of games ❤😊
Imagine Pokemon in this style 😅
I need ragnarok online in this style.
Bro imagine final fantasy 1-6 in HD-2D
I need a Golden Sun like this
Feel like Bravely Default existed way sooner than Octopath Traveler
I hope we get all the old Pokémon games remade in HD-2D.
Yugen Saga is a great 2D mmo. Its new, and still being worked on everyday
What is the clip from about halfway through where the girl attacks a boar with a spear? What game is that?
That game is called Alterium Shift and still in development, but it has a demo!
store.steampowered.com/app/1586990/Alterium_Shift/
@@CobraCode Very cool, thank you!
This is what the final fantasy pixel remaster should have been
What are the titles used in this video?
I love it. Vandel Heart would be tight. 2d gore is fun
Never played that game, but thanks for letting me know.
Just looked it up and it looks really interesting!
owning a combination of words is craaaaaaaazzzyyy, they didn;t even create those words, it's like owning the term MMORPG, JRPG, RPG etc. wtf, annoying company
Yeah I agree.
Another example of this is the whole monster energy fiasco.
Plot twist: This is actually a sponsored advertisement utilizing reverse psychology 😅
Did you know that the 2d game that you are showing to is in this video is not 2d? Its actually 2.5d.
these games are basically ragnarok online with Unreal Engine 4
Square Enix still calls it HD-2D.
Also its clearly in 3D.
true but can you says it highdefinition and in two dimensions cause its a little to vague and broad but high definition and in two dimensions sounds different but across the same idea. so don t worry there still might be work arounds
I really want the earlier final fantasy games to get HD-2D remakes. Especially 4-6!!!
Games blessed to be on the incredible Sega Saturn*
I will never understand the why or how people trademark things like "HD 2D". It's so generic and pretty lame that people arent allowed to use the term in marketing.
You can just use 2D HD
They only own HD-2D
Why does the thumbnail for this short look like the dude with red hair is about to take some hard ass backshots? He looks like he's so done too lol
Will these games be pc exclusive or console? These games could be ported or made separately for mobile gamers as premium games ( paid ). Good storyline, maybe co-op multiplayer support ( not necessary ) but at least smooth and optimised games with long campaign mode
Octopath traveler is pretty good in HD-2D, but i'm more of a solopath settler, and I'm in 4k-3D. So they have been pwned.
this is just blooming the fuck outta 2d billboard sprites.
These games are awesome
Give us the HD-2D Chronos Trigger!
I’m just imagining an HD 2d remake of ff6 but everything looks like amano artwork….
Too good to be true obviously, but maybe AI can get us there one day.
No, Dragon Quest XII will be the first to use Unreal Engine 5, not the 3 remake.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Yeah must have mixed something up, but by the time I noticed the video was already out. Sorry about that.
what is the game called in clip 3?
This fells simular to the oregon trail game on steam
That was actually made with Unreal Engine as well!
I freaking need DQ3 already!
I prefer the term 2.5 D
Chrono Trigger remake when?
What about crono trigger hd-2d
Красота!
A long explanation of "its 2d sprites on 3d landscapes with a pretty filter"
I think it's kinda a stupid word (because it kinda means nothing), also I loved the modern lighting and post processing on pixel artstyle at first, but idk the more I look at it... It oftens looks way too shiny like so many Unreal Engines Games
It's just a bit much to look at in my opinion
I'm waiting for voxel art style to replace this.
So Doom 2 was HD-2D? Because the characters were 2D and the environment 3D just the same, the difference is light, shaders, effects, postprocessing, but it is still the same thing
2.5D is always what ive seen it called
ok that's cool
They should just remake all the old 2d jrpgs using hd 2d with some little qol improvements . They can decide to make fullblown later
Octopath traveler is so weird, I’m sure I was doing something wrong but by the time I finished chapter one my people were like level 6 and chapter 2 required level 20. Am I just supposed to grind for hours?
@@namelessanomaly3946 I got all of the travelers and was only level 6
I'm really not a fan of this artstyle honestly, at least not the way SE does it. They just seem to go way overboard with postprocessing effects or something, it gives me a headache.
The Switch's bad framerate probably didn't help, I could barely get through Octopath Traveller and Triangle Strategy's demos.
Yeah they overdid it a lot in the beginning.
I recently played octopath 2 and it looks a lot cleaner and crisper.
Was playing at 120FPS on pc.
The should have been the style for the FF6 pixel remaster. What we got was really disappointing
imagine patent an addjective.
