I'll put some perspective on Duncan's rookie year and the team's subsequent turnaround. You briefly mentioned it at the beginning, but it's worth reiterating that Robinson had missed essentially the entire previous year, so their 36 game improvement was just as much due to his return as it was Duncan's involvement. It was a massive double whammy for the team that led to their first ever title within 2 years of pairing them up.
Yea the video makes it sound like Tim led the charge but in reality the spurs had won 59 games the season prior to Robinsons injury so a 56 win season wouldn't have been unbelievable even without Timmy and only Robinson coming back from injury.

No timmy That spurs team would have been 40-50 wins max. that being said when a team purposely tanks the win total always jumps for example this spurs team would rest sochan and keldon randomly plus missed Vassell for half the season. Those three guys were responsible for over 80% of the teams scoring having all three back playing close to 82 games and not throwing games on purpose will lead to a win total jump without bringing in Wemby.
@@ejj9956 Robinson didn't start his noticeable decline until the following season. They were very much the Twin Towers that they were reputed to be during their first season together, essentially putting up the same numbers. He was more like '04 Shaq than '07 Shaq.
Bird's rookie year turn-around was way more impressive since it was mostly the same roster as the prior season with Bird being the only significant addition.
David Robinson being injured in the 96-97 was a huge reason they had such a big win difference compared to the next season, not just Tim Duncan being drafted.
It doesn't really matter because had Robinson not been injured, the Spurs would be sitting here with 0 rings and Tim Duncan would've probably only gotten 2 or 3 rings. Kobe and Lebron might even have more rings as a result of Duncan having less rings.

He's only giving much-needed context to Jxmy's fact at 8:15 about Tim getting them 36 more wins. Although Tim did a lot for them and was one of the greatest rookies, a huge reason they even had that giant win increase in Tim's rookie season was because that prior team was missing their best player which resulted in a bunch of losses. Then in the next season they get Tim + Robinson comes back (albeit a step slower), so obviously they'd get a ton of wins compared to the season where they were missing their best player. Jxmy left out or ignored all of this context and stated, "This is the greatest leap simply by adding a rookie."
Tim is a HOF player but his impact to the spurs his rookie year is a bit overrated. The spurs were a 50+ win team in 94-95 and 95-96. They tanked the 96-97 year hence 20 wins. The following year they went right back to being the spurs with 50+ wins. Fans are putting too much pressure on wemby. He's just like ralph Sampson who had all the same attributes (mind you the game was played differently back then) and his career was considered a bust even though he's a HOF. This type of hype has the potential of ruining his legacy.
Never seen a player with that body type stay healthy for too long. There is something odd about the mechanics of his limbs that smells of injury … I hope I’m wrong , the guy is a phenomenal player already .
@@Hooderaw they didn't really chose to tank. It kind of got forced on them when Robinson went down. The injury bug hit hard that year, it wasn't just Robinson.
It also bears remembering that typically first draft picks/high draft picks are going to bad teams, often institutionally broken teams. I think part of the Wemby hype is that he is going to the Spurs who are actually well-run and have infrastructure that is likely to help him - the team does sorta suck though. I feel as though the biggest risk with him is that he just going to end up hurt all of the time.
I don't want to prejudge it, but his body type is like an injury magnet. He will probably need a lot of time to recover, as well as adjust to another country with a different basketball culture. It won't be easy or quick, it will probably take years for him to put on the right amount of muscles and simply become an all star.
I don't think Victor's case depends on what happened with Kareem (players with similar body types don't have the same stamina, injury proneness etc) but I agree he will probably find his balance even if it takes time

True much better to be drafted by San Antonio, a relatively small market in the league compared to being drafted by a team in the top 3 big cities/markets where he would no doubt be scrutinized and hounded by local media on a constant basis. He’s going to the right place for him given all the expectations.

I honestly think he'll be great but maybe not the #1 on a title contender? I see a lot of Evan Mobley in him - very long, versatile defender that can step out to the perimeter on offense. He could win DPOYs, sure, but Finals MVP? Idk... My guess is he ends up being the Robin to an elite guard/wing that can carry the offense.

Why wasn’t David Robinson on the list of players that won multiple rings with the team that drafted him? Have people forgotten how influential he was to Duncan’s career? Many of the points made about the spurs and Duncan seem to be neglecting the fact that there was already an mvp on our team.

Absolutely great analysis. Your point is why I had no problems with Giannis' statement after he got bounced out by the heat. Winning a chip aint easy. It's quite literally 50/50. It's clear this kid is an anomaly for his size and agility. So Either he's going to be a taller KD esque who's been able to dominate and win mvps before major injuries and still come back or he's gonna be like Greg Oden. The silver lining is so far he doesn't have an injury history and the spurs are absolutely not going to make the same mistake they made with kawhi. They're gonna make sure the kid is as healthy as possible. He's going to be surrounded by NBA vets which is seriously missing in most of the NBA. Guarding high schoolers is one thing, guarding beasts like Nurkic, Jokic, AD, Embid is different. Or trying to block Gianis. He will need some muscle to compete in the NBA and most players lose soft touch after they get 30-60 pounds of muscle and it takes insane work ethics to get it back. There will be a long process there, hope he can make it.
@@prunie9797 The French league isn't that as physical as the Euroleague or any top pro leagues in Europe nor in Australia. Most French NBA players aren't necessarily known to be physical, are they? Also, Victor's teams weren't good enough to reach the Euroleague so he never fought against heftier 7footers that much in his life. The good thing about him is that he got access to the best care a young athlete would need, so I hope he'll hold up for years.
I feel like Pop is smart enough to realize this, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing a sf/pf position moreso than center. Using him like a taller Durant/Duncan. Lots of short range shots, good post moves, but not necessarily trying to bang inside all the time.

Mark Eaton didn't jump alot so he started on the ground. Look at Jokic he's been one of the few big men thats remained healthy because he playstyle keeps him avoiding twists or sprains.
You're totes forgetting how huge Eaton was. Outweighing Wemby by, what, 50 pounds? Something like that. And that's like 45 pounds of muscle. Plus, all Eaton did was block shots. There is a very good chance Wemby will be banged around so much he'll end up being a really good bench player.
One thing worth mentioning is that if there were ever a coach who wouldn't give in to the hype & would focus on developing Wembanyama the right way with healthy expectations, Coach Pop is probably top of the list. To be fair, I don't think many people are expecting Victor to transform SA into contenders in his rookie season. I think what they're saying is they expect him to be an all-time great by the time his career is over. That's the potential he has. But I think most people aren't going to kill him if SA misses the playoffs next season.

As much as we love this sport, its incredibly difficult to win championships. The bar that stars are held to is insane. You need to be great, your teammates to be great (which often doesn't make sense, how can you sign good players if the couple good ones are on max contracts), health, luck that other teams aren't loaded (Rockets and Harden could have one if they didn't meet KD Warriors, all his playoff chokes could have faded away with ome good run), good coaching etc. While a couple of different stars have managed to win recently, and Jokic might this year too, the league has typically been a series of dominant teams/ dynasties from rare or strange scenarios. (Golden State with Curry on the discount contract due to ankles, LeBron going back to Cleveland after they tanked, Lakers getting Pau giftwrapped after Shaq and Kobe, Spurs, Heat, 90s Bulls). I know I'm generalising but I can sum up the past 30 years just like that. It will be a miracle it Wemby wins one, just like it is for 99% of NBA players.
It's difficult to win because the #1 overall goes literally to the worst team. Which you can be stuck in a horrible, toxic franchise and a weak development team.

Yeah I hate when people bring up rings as a basis for player or coaching evaluation. You can be the best player or coach in the world and still lose. Organization has to be in alignment, your team has to capitalize, your team can't get cold on a bad day, roster has to be good, players need to play for each other, practice, schedule, injury luck, etc.
Even guys like jokic have other stars. Murray and porter are both really good underrated players. They also have good role players too. It’s hard for guys to win on their own.
I think Victor is going to be a great player. I know the expectations are high with him but I believe he will be able to play at a high level and hopefully play in a championship team if they build pieces around him. My only concern is injuries because we don’t want something similar to Zion. As long he can stay consistent on his training and conditioning, he should be good for every game he plays.
There are only two questions about him. #1 by far is his health. Players his height are usually riddled with injuries. And that is while playing off the ball. We have never seen an on the ball player at 7’0 let alone at 7’5. If I were the Spurs I would play him off the ball even if it means he won’t reach his full potential. By doing this they raise the chances of him staying healthy from 8% to 51%
@@johndurrer7869 pop needs to train him up conservative , just hang around the paint, don't draw any charges, small jumps right around the rim, nothing too fancy. Exploit his length but don't ask him to carry the offense. Keep those feet on the ground, we won't need superman once we have some first round picks lined up around him.

I agree. I don’t really like guys who only talk. Even if they can back it up most of the time, at some point, it gets excessive, but they get a by because they’re good. I’d much rather be someone who can fume quietly, play calmly and do what I need to do. Flashy or not, by the end of a decade, you’ll most likely be remembered for the hardware. Not for how well you could get into other people’s heads.
And then there was that time that while on the bench Timmy quietly laughed and cloaked/smothered most of his mirth with a towel.................. and got booted out of the game!
Man I miss Duncan. Plays in the paint and enforces his will on defenders, doesn't let mismatches slip and seals hard on guards if they switch, effortless hook on the glass, has a deadly midrange jumper he can go to if you sag the paint, sets hard screens, doesn't flop, and one of the best passers and defenders as a big man. GSW has really changed the game. It was fun at first, but then it killed the natural big man as they were disposed quickly by the league to imitate small ball teams. Also add the fact that big men are not allowed to play physical anymore and NBA has basically rewarded smaller teams by favoring charging calls and moving screens. Now we have big men who dribble a lot, shoot step-back threes, scared to post-up, and flops a lot

The only small ball team who dominate and won a title is the GSW and that because they have an all time talent in Steph Curry and Draymond is like a Rodman/Unseld version of undersized big man who can defend multiple posts. Also the big men won the last 5 MVPs and in the last 5 playoffs the best player was a big man ( AD in 2020, Giannis in 2021 and in 2022 with Steph, and Jokic this year) Also outside of GSW, every last winner of the last 6 year have good to dominant bigs: Siakam/Gasol in 2019, AD in 2020, Giannis/Brook in 2021, Green in 2022 because the GSW, and Jokic so far has been the best player of the playoffs ( before Buter) but Bam is the 2nd best player of the Heat tho.
Extremely well done video, NBA fans (including me) and people in general need to stop getting carried away with the "hype" around a player and your video puts an emphasis on this really well through graphs, numbers and accurate comparisons... NBA fans might unironically be the cause of a player not flourishing and living up to his true potential by putting such expectations on young players.., they are still humans at the end of the day...

@@pornhubmante its more so he presents bad arguments because going into detail rarely makes for a well paced youtube video, take for example him mentioning luka after he talks about how few players stay loyal and win multiple for their team, what he chose not to speak on was that only 3 of the 7 actually won any rings in their first 5 years and that said 3 had better teammates than we have seen luka with thus far in shaq and robinson. you could also argue he cherry picks stats ie using the last 25 years of 1st overall picks, literally 1/3 of that sample isnt even 28 and there just so happens to be 2 great players picked in the 2 years preceding the sample at 1st overall (AI and Duncan) i still enjoy the videos though

the biggest question I have about Victor is being 7'5, how well will his body (KNEES) hold up? Look at most players at that height; most ended up with short careers due to injury/knee problems. But maybe he'll be an exception to that.
That is true, but since becoming a pro he's been doing lots of physical preparation to extend his career. Lots of stretching, exercises for toes, calves and knees. I really hope he succeed, in the little I watched of him he seems like a once in a lifetime player.
The two greatest turnarounds in NBA history via the Spurs only 2 number 1 draft picks... and while that trend may continue, the Admiral in 89 and Duncan in 97 were both fully grown and mature men, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Two of the highest quality people the game has ever seen, and two of the most gracious and beloved teammates. Time will quickly tell if Victor is cut from the same cloth and if he is he will continue that dynasty of great life-long Spurs big men!!

Well said. People forget that the Spurs actually drafted Robinson in 1987, but he had to do Navy duties for 2 years. This dude was ahead of his time. He got disciplined, grew too big for the ships and entered the NBA already a grown man like you said. That's why he really only played 14 seasons, 13 if you discount when he was injured. He was a specimen at the time.
He's already playing professionally in Europe. And the league there is intense. Especially the fans. He'll do fine as far as the pressure on him is concerned. If he fails to live up to the hype the expectations and the pressure won't be the reason.
Yeah, but he isn't playing the highest level. He's playing France's B league (second division) and not even playing Euroleague because he didn't want to go through the extra games it required. Luka Doncic was dominating Euroleague, the second best competition in the whole world at age 18. Now, just because he wasn't as tall they ignored this and the Hawks even traded down because they didn't value him. I don't know if Webanyama is ready for 82 games.

He had one of his best league games this season (27 PTS/11 REB) against Monaco who reached the EuroLeague final four. He's been second in PPG in the World Cup Qualifiers. He's also playing in Pro A which is the first division in France. Not to mention he outplayed Chet Holmgren in the U19 World Cup final despite being a year younger and his dominance against G-League Ignite and Scoot Henderson earlier this past season. Does he have the accolades Luka had? No but he's certainly proven himself against high-calibre European opposition and Luka benefitted from playing on a MUCH better team.

The Spurs record increase after drafting Duncan was not only due to Duncan, but also that MVP caliber David Robinson was injured for the entire season prior(save 6 games). It was the combination that lead to the +36 win increase.

I feel like the 1st overall pick is lowkey a curse because there's overwhelming pressure for that team to take the best prospect. It kinda restricts their freedom of choice whereas other picks you can choose from a plethora of great players
Winning a championship requires more than one player alone can provide. It requires an organizational commitment to building a team, and/or a lot of draft luck. So Wemby could be a generational talent but not get a ring. And it should be mentioned Duncan’s first season coincided with Robinson coming back from his lost year. Kind of an unusual situation.

Not one player in the French league was even drafted by NBA teams. He has played half the games he will have to play next year. He will have to play against incredibly skilled, much larger and quicker bigs, and guard them down low rather just roam around as he does now. He rarely gets a steal and if you watch him he normally jumps to pass and his three point shooting which was heralded as one of the best ever is now 5 for his last 36. Let’s see how he reacts to a different level. Ralph Sampson was very similar, incredibly hyped, taken first, a generational player and he was a fine pro but not an all-timer. Relax, and remember Chet will be joining the Thunder.

Great video! Charles Barkley once said that it takes about 3-4 years to really know what type of player you're gonna be. I totally agree, a lot of these younger guys come in with a very thin frame and need the time to get bigger and stronger. I'm excited for Wemby, I'm glad he's going to San Antonio because he's gonna get a chance to develop in an org that isn't desperate and a fan base that is loyal and seems patient. As a spanish fan, I've been wary the whole season about Wembanyama - Euroleague prospects aren't commonly powerhouses in the NBA, and even now that it happens more, the man ***Luka*** was already doing regular 30 point triple doubles in the Euroleague in less than 30 minutes. Wembanyama has 13 euroleague appearances averaging 6 points and 5 rebounds as a 7'3" center. Now granted it was a year ago but his current team didn't even play in European competition this year. I hope my doubts are dispelled and he's clearly stepped up this year in the French league, but also it's the French league. A good league but they haven't had much success in European basketball as of late. I'll remain cautious.

If any team can integrate Wemby into the league properly, it’s the Spurs. Pops understands players needs and where they shine. He knows how to bring in highly pressured foreign talent and allow them to grow while managing expectations. The Spurs actually give this kid a chance to thrive as they’ve proven time and time again.

The kid is very mature and the family has been preparing for his career to the NBA for several years now. He has a set daily routine, his own cook to manage his diet and he is still focusing on skills than gaining weight. That is why he is so agile.

Robinson's return had a lot do with San Antonio 36 game improvement in 1997-98. I think more than adding a rookie Duncan. That leaves the 34 game improvement during Robinson's rookie year as the best improvement a team got by simply by adding a rookie.
Re: Duncan's +36 turnaround, that's kind of inflated by Robinson's sitting out most of the prior year and coming back healthy the next. Incidentally, Robinson held the previous rookie record, so in a way he was responsible for the two biggest single season turnarounds in NBA history.
The expectations are too high, but the pieces that built a dynasty around Tim Duncan are still there today. RC and Pop are still around, hopefully Budenholzer will return and eventually take the starting job from Pop.
Im from San Antonio and stopped watching basketball around 17-18 because of all the drama and weak Spurs seasons. Ill be honest, a lot of other personal stuff happened and I lost touch completely, so when I looked at Spur's current roster and realized I knew absolutely zero about our players I kind of was turned off. Victor has gotten me interested though, and combined with what seems a relatively young team Im getting excited for about 2-3 years from now. Im not expecting Victor to move mountains, but if the org can keep him here and healthy Im hoping he proves an integral piece of our team that can atleast make good showings in the playoffs (dont even need to win, just make a fighting effort). He is going to get bullied hard his first season though.

In all honesty, I’ve seen him play for France, and there were many situations where he got bullied by european centers inside the paint, and besides the injuries I think that is the biggest concern with him at this point. I wish him a great carrier in the NBA, I’m still not convinced he will perform as he’s expected to. I hope I’m wrong.

Some players don’t necessarily need to put on muscle if they have enough strength and skill but from what I see he’ll get ploughed through so looking at how young he is it would be a huge plus to have more muscle . What’s remarkable still is of the six number 1 picks that have rings of any kind at all, two of them are Kyrie and AD. Lebron truly is the only number 1 pick in a quarter of a century to live up to the hype.

One of the key factors to those 7 players, and you mentioned it, was loyalty. Jordan especially, had scoring titles, hype, etc etc, but had to wait 7 seasons to get a title. That time allowed the Bulls to build the team around him, and get the right coach. So many players these days just jump from contract to contract, no matter which team is offering it.
As a bull's fan, Jordan would have left the bulls in today's NBA. Reinsdorf is a pretty fucked up guy. I'm glad he stayed in the end but people forget he came close to leaving on every contract renewal after he broke his foot.

As a Spurs fan, I'm hoping Wembanyama will be a lot like Tim Duncan or David Robinson, and not like Kawhi Leonard. Though in some ways, Spurs fans should be grateful to Kawhi- his selfishness and deceitfulness were a big part of the reason the Spurs were able to get Wembanyama.

I know everyones in love with Wemby's potential but I'm a little worried about his defense. His post defense is weak. He's pretty skinny and unlike other thin bigs, (Embiid, Giannis) he can't just bulk up due to his height and the risk of injury. Idk man, I can see a lot of rim runners just going at his chest.

I'll put some perspective on Duncan's rookie year and the team's subsequent turnaround. You briefly mentioned it at the beginning, but it's worth reiterating that Robinson had missed essentially the entire previous year, so their 36 game improvement was just as much due to his return as it was Duncan's involvement. It was a massive double whammy for the team that led to their first ever title within 2 years of pairing them up.
Yea the video makes it sound like Tim led the charge but in reality the spurs had won 59 games the season prior to Robinsons injury so a 56 win season wouldn't have been unbelievable even without Timmy and only Robinson coming back from injury.

@@ejj9956 Robinson didn't start his noticeable decline until the following season. They were very much the Twin Towers that they were reputed to be during their first season together, essentially putting up the same numbers. He was more like '04 Shaq than '07 Shaq.
Bird's rookie year turn-around was way more impressive since it was mostly the same roster as the prior season with Bird being the only significant addition.
David Robinson being injured in the 96-97 was a huge reason they had such a big win difference compared to the next season, not just Tim Duncan being drafted.

Tim is a HOF player but his impact to the spurs his rookie year is a bit overrated. The spurs were a 50+ win team in 94-95 and 95-96. They tanked the 96-97 year hence 20 wins. The following year they went right back to being the spurs with 50+ wins. Fans are putting too much pressure on wemby. He's just like ralph Sampson who had all the same attributes (mind you the game was played differently back then) and his career was considered a bust even though he's a HOF. This type of hype has the potential of ruining his legacy.

It also bears remembering that typically first draft picks/high draft picks are going to bad teams, often institutionally broken teams. I think part of the Wemby hype is that he is going to the Spurs who are actually well-run and have infrastructure that is likely to help him - the team does sorta suck though. I feel as though the biggest risk with him is that he just going to end up hurt all of the time.
I don't want to prejudge it, but his body type is like an injury magnet. He will probably need a lot of time to recover, as well as adjust to another country with a different basketball culture. It won't be easy or quick, it will probably take years for him to put on the right amount of muscles and simply become an all star.
He similar to Abdul Jabbar..a few inches in height and weight. Get him up to Kareem's body and he can last
I don't think Victor's case depends on what happened with Kareem (players with similar body types don't have the same stamina, injury proneness etc) but I agree he will probably find his balance even if it takes time

I honestly think he'll be great but maybe not the #1 on a title contender? I see a lot of Evan Mobley in him - very long, versatile defender that can step out to the perimeter on offense. He could win DPOYs, sure, but Finals MVP? Idk... My guess is he ends up being the Robin to an elite guard/wing that can carry the offense.

It's quite literally 50/50.
It's clear this kid is an anomaly for his size and agility. So Either he's going to be a taller KD esque who's been able to dominate and win mvps before major injuries and still come back or he's gonna be like Greg Oden. The silver lining is so far he doesn't have an injury history and the spurs are absolutely not going to make the same mistake they made with kawhi. They're gonna make sure the kid is as healthy as possible.
He's going to be surrounded by NBA vets which is seriously missing in most of the NBA. Tim Duncan was also pretty undersized in an Era that had prime Shaq and there are other tall lanky players who succeeded like KG.
What people fail to realize is the NBA nowadays limits what defenses can do to a player. So Wemby could legitimately shoot over everyone for a 12 to 15 footer every time and its money. Who's going to stop that?
If someone with a glass body like AD can succeed then Webby definitely can with appropriate spacing. If anyone can figure it out, it's gonna be Pop

Guarding high schoolers is one thing, guarding beasts like Nurkic, Jokic, AD, Embid is different. Or trying to block Gianis. He will need some muscle to compete in the NBA and most players lose soft touch after they get 30-60 pounds of muscle and it takes insane work ethics to get it back. There will be a long process there, hope he can make it.

Also, Victor's teams weren't good enough to reach the Euroleague so he never fought against heftier 7footers that much in his life. The good thing about him is that he got access to the best care a young athlete would need, so I hope he'll hold up for years.
I feel like Pop is smart enough to realize this, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing a sf/pf position moreso than center. Using him like a taller Durant/Duncan. Lots of short range shots, good post moves, but not necessarily trying to bang inside all the time.

Mark Eaton didn't jump alot so he started on the ground. Look at Jokic he's been one of the few big men thats remained healthy because he playstyle keeps him avoiding twists or sprains.

You're totes forgetting how huge Eaton was. Outweighing Wemby by, what, 50 pounds? Something like that. And that's like 45 pounds of muscle. Plus, all Eaton did was block shots. There is a very good chance Wemby will be banged around so much he'll end up being a really good bench player.
One thing worth mentioning is that if there were ever a coach who wouldn't give in to the hype & would focus on developing Wembanyama the right way with healthy expectations, Coach Pop is probably top of the list. Spurs are fortunate to be able to pick him, but I'd say Victor is even more fortunate to be picked by them.

To be fair, I don't think many people are expecting Victor to transform SA into contenders in his rookie season. I think what they're saying is they expect him to be an all-time great by the time his career is over. That's the potential he has. But I think most people aren't going to kill him if SA misses the playoffs next season.

As much as we love this sport, its incredibly difficult to win championships. The bar that stars are held to is insane. You need to be great, your teammates to be great (which often doesn't make sense, how can you sign good players if the couple good ones are on max contracts), health, luck that other teams aren't loaded (Rockets and Harden could have one if they didn't meet KD Warriors, all his playoff chokes could have faded away with ome good run), good coaching etc. While a couple of different stars have managed to win recently, and Jokic might this year too, the league has typically been a series of dominant teams/ dynasties from rare or strange scenarios. (Golden State with Curry on the discount contract due to ankles, LeBron going back to Cleveland after they tanked, Lakers getting Pau giftwrapped after Shaq and Kobe, Spurs, Heat, 90s Bulls). I know I'm generalising but I can sum up the past 30 years just like that. It will be a miracle it Wemby wins one, just like it is for 99% of NBA players.

Yeah I hate when people bring up rings as a basis for player or coaching evaluation. You can be the best player or coach in the world and still lose. Organization has to be in alignment, your team has to capitalize, your team can't get cold on a bad day, roster has to be good, players need to play for each other, practice, schedule, injury luck, etc.
Even guys like jokic have other stars. Murray and porter are both really good underrated players. They also have good role players too. It’s hard for guys to win on their own.
I think Victor is going to be a great player. I know the expectations are high with him but I believe he will be able to play at a high level and hopefully play in a championship team if they build pieces around him. My only concern is injuries because we don’t want something similar to Zion. As long he can stay consistent on his training and conditioning, he should be good for every game he plays.
I’d say if he takes the Giannis route he should be fine… just needs more muscle and he should be straight
There are only two questions about him. #1 by far is his health. Players his height are usually riddled with injuries. And that is while playing off the ball. We have never seen an on the ball player at 7’0 let alone at 7’5. If I were the Spurs I would play him off the ball even if it means he won’t reach his full potential. By doing this they raise the chances of him staying healthy from 8% to 51%

I agree. I don’t really like guys who only talk. Even if they can back it up most of the time, at some point, it gets excessive, but they get a by because they’re good. I’d much rather be someone who can fume quietly, play calmly and do what I need to do. Flashy or not, by the end of a decade, you’ll most likely be remembered for the hardware. Not for how well you could get into other people’s heads.

Man I miss Duncan. Plays in the paint and enforces his will on defenders, doesn't let mismatches slip and seals hard on guards if they switch, effortless hook on the glass, has a deadly midrange jumper he can go to if you sag the paint, sets hard screens, doesn't flop, and one of the best passers and defenders as a big man. GSW has really changed the game. It was fun at first, but then it killed the natural big man as they were disposed quickly by the league to imitate small ball teams. Also add the fact that big men are not allowed to play physical anymore and NBA has basically rewarded smaller teams by favoring charging calls and moving screens. Now we have big men who dribble a lot, shoot step-back threes, scared to post-up, and flops a lot
Hasnt the MVP past 5years been Gianni's, Embiid and Jokic. AD just sent that same warriors team home.

The only small ball team who dominate and won a title is the GSW and that because they have an all time talent in Steph Curry and Draymond is like a Rodman/Unseld version of undersized big man who can defend multiple posts.
Also the big men won the last 5 MVPs and in the last 5 playoffs the best player was a big man ( AD in 2020, Giannis in 2021 and in 2022 with Steph, and Jokic this year)
Also outside of GSW, every last winner of the last 6 year have good to dominant bigs: Siakam/Gasol in 2019, AD in 2020, Giannis/Brook in 2021, Green in 2022 because the GSW, and Jokic so far has been the best player of the playoffs ( before Buter) but Bam is the 2nd best player of the Heat tho.

you could also argue he cherry picks stats ie using the last 25 years of 1st overall picks, literally 1/3 of that sample isnt even 28 and there just so happens to be 2 great players picked in the 2 years preceding the sample at 1st overall (AI and Duncan)

the biggest question I have about Victor is being 7'5, how well will his body (KNEES) hold up? Look at most players at that height; most ended up with short careers due to injury/knee problems. But maybe he'll be an exception to that.
That is true, but since becoming a pro he's been doing lots of physical preparation to extend his career. Lots of stretching, exercises for toes, calves and knees. I really hope he succeed, in the little I watched of him he seems like a once in a lifetime player.

Well said. People forget that the Spurs actually drafted Robinson in 1987, but he had to do Navy duties for 2 years. This dude was ahead of his time. He got disciplined, grew too big for the ships and entered the NBA already a grown man like you said. That's why he really only played 14 seasons, 13 if you discount when he was injured. He was a specimen at the time.
He's already playing professionally in Europe. And the league there is intense. Especially the fans. He'll do fine as far as the pressure on him is concerned. If he fails to live up to the hype the expectations and the pressure won't be the reason.
Yeah, but he isn't playing the highest level. He's playing France's B league (second division) and not even playing Euroleague because he didn't want to go through the extra games it required. Luka Doncic was dominating Euroleague, the second best competition in the whole world at age 18. Now, just because he wasn't as tall they ignored this and the Hawks even traded down because they didn't value him. I don't know if Webanyama is ready for 82 games.

He had one of his best league games this season (27 PTS/11 REB) against Monaco who reached the EuroLeague final four. He's been second in PPG in the World Cup Qualifiers. He's also playing in Pro A which is the first division in France. Not to mention he outplayed Chet Holmgren in the U19 World Cup final despite being a year younger and his dominance against G-League Ignite and Scoot Henderson earlier this past season.
Does he have the accolades Luka had? No but he's certainly proven himself against high-calibre European opposition and Luka benefitted from playing on a MUCH better team.

The Spurs record increase after drafting Duncan was not only due to Duncan, but also that MVP caliber David Robinson was injured for the entire season prior(save 6 games). It was the combination that lead to the +36 win increase.
And they tanked.

I feel like the 1st overall pick is lowkey a curse because there's overwhelming pressure for that team to take the best prospect. It kinda restricts their freedom of choice whereas other picks you can choose from a plethora of great players
Winning a championship requires more than one player alone can provide. It requires an organizational commitment to building a team, and/or a lot of draft luck. So Wemby could be a generational talent but not get a ring.
And it should be mentioned Duncan’s first season coincided with Robinson coming back from his lost year. Kind of an unusual situation.
The Spurs are the best run franchise in the NBA and are in a state with low income tax. They can easily get people to surround Victor going forward.

Not one player in the French league was even drafted by NBA teams. He has played half the games he will have to play next year. He will have to play against incredibly skilled, much larger and quicker bigs, and guard them down low rather just roam around as he does now. He rarely gets a steal and if you watch him he normally jumps to pass and his three point shooting which was heralded as one of the best ever is now 5 for his last 36. Let’s see how he reacts to a different level. Ralph Sampson was very similar, incredibly hyped, taken first, a generational player and he was a fine pro but not an all-timer. Relax, and remember Chet will be joining the Thunder.

Great video! Charles Barkley once said that it takes about 3-4 years to really know what type of player you're gonna be. I totally agree, a lot of these younger guys come in with a very thin frame and need the time to get bigger and stronger.

As a spanish fan, I've been wary the whole season about Wembanyama - Euroleague prospects aren't commonly powerhouses in the NBA, and even now that it happens more, the man ***Luka*** was already doing regular 30 point triple doubles in the Euroleague in less than 30 minutes.
Wembanyama has 13 euroleague appearances averaging 6 points and 5 rebounds as a 7'3" center. Now granted it was a year ago but his current team didn't even play in European competition this year.
I hope my doubts are dispelled and he's clearly stepped up this year in the French league, but also it's the French league. A good league but they haven't had much success in European basketball as of late. I'll remain cautious.

If any team can integrate Wemby into the league properly, it’s the Spurs. Pops understands players needs and where they shine. He knows how to bring in highly pressured foreign talent and allow them to grow while managing expectations. The Spurs actually give this kid a chance to thrive as they’ve proven time and time again.

Great video. The number one thing I worry about with Wembanyama is his ability to stay healthy. His tools are unbelievable, but his frame looks slight and vulnerable to injury. I hope like hell he stays healthy, but I kind of doubt it.
This is silly, Devonta Smith had the exact same concerns (playing in a more physical league), and he hasn't had any injury time so far

The most terrifying thing I can imagine is : In 2 years, Luka can leave Dallas if the Mavs don't build around him, and the Spurs have the best shot of landing him. We can see, in 2 years time, a Luka + Wemby team just demolish the whole league, and the Spurs go back to their Dynasty.

I think he’ll struggle the first year or Two, but steadily get better. think by his 4th-5th year, he’ll start to get closer to what we’re expecting. at the least, he’ll be a dependable top-defending stretch, possibly eventually a winning game-changing player
The kid is very mature and the family has been preparing for his career to the NBA for several years now. He has a set daily routine, his own cook to manage his diet and he is still focusing on skills than gaining weight. That is why he is so agile.
I hope he stays healthy. No one deserves to be injured.
And i do hope he takes care of his health. We all know what happened to one of the tallest players ever, Yao Ming. He was great but was injury-prone and retired early. Hoping Wemby doesn't up on the same trajectory.

Yep, not to mention the Spurs won 59 games the year before with a healthy David Robinson. David Robinson's +34 wins turnaround in his rookie season is way more impressive in comparison.
Robinson's return had a lot do with San Antonio 36 game improvement in 1997-98. I think more than adding a rookie Duncan. That leaves the 34 game improvement during Robinson's rookie year as the best improvement a team got by simply by adding a rookie.
Re: Duncan's +36 turnaround, that's kind of inflated by Robinson's sitting out most of the prior year and coming back healthy the next.
Incidentally, Robinson held the previous rookie record, so in a way he was responsible for the two biggest single season turnarounds in NBA history.

The expectations are too high, but the pieces that built a dynasty around Tim Duncan are still there today. RC and Pop are still around, hopefully Budenholzer will return and eventually take the starting job from Pop.
Im from San Antonio and stopped watching basketball around 17-18 because of all the drama and weak Spurs seasons. Ill be honest, a lot of other personal stuff happened and I lost touch completely, so when I looked at Spur's current roster and realized I knew absolutely zero about our players I kind of was turned off. Victor has gotten me interested though, and combined with what seems a relatively young team Im getting excited for about 2-3 years from now. Im not expecting Victor to move mountains, but if the org can keep him here and healthy Im hoping he proves an integral piece of our team that can atleast make good showings in the playoffs (dont even need to win, just make a fighting effort). He is going to get bullied hard his first season though.

I'm sure someone else said this, it's about player development and adding the right piece ls to build with. Players get drafted to a team with no structure and unfortunately end up being a bust. While luckily for Wembayama he's being drafted by a team with winning culture he will be ok...

In all honesty, I’ve seen him play for France, and there were many situations where he got bullied by european centers inside the paint, and besides the injuries I think that is the biggest concern with him at this point. I wish him a great carrier in the NBA, I’m still not convinced he will perform as he’s expected to. I hope I’m wrong.
He needs to build some more muscles and this will come as he ages a bit. Remember how skinny Giannis was when he joined the nba and look at him now

Some players don’t necessarily need to put on muscle if they have enough strength and skill but from what I see he’ll get ploughed through so looking at how young he is it would be a huge plus to have more muscle . One of the key factors to those 7 players, and you mentioned it, was loyalty. Jordan especially, had scoring titles, hype, etc etc, but had to wait 7 seasons to get a title. That time allowed the Bulls to build the team around him, and get the right coach.
So many players these days just jump from contract to contract, no matter which team is offering it.
As a bull's fan, Jordan would have left the bulls in today's NBA. Reinsdorf is a pretty fucked up guy. I'm glad he stayed in the end but people forget he came close to leaving on every contract renewal after he broke his foot.

As a Spurs fan, I'm hoping Wembanyama will be a lot like Tim Duncan or David Robinson, and not like Kawhi Leonard. Though in some ways, Spurs fans should be grateful to Kawhi- his selfishness and deceitfulness were a big part of the reason the Spurs were able to get Wembanyama.

How the heck did you not put Giannis in there, I know he only 1 championship, but still deserves massive credit in lifting the Bucks to a championship.

Great take, as usual Jxmy! And also, on the opposing end of this high draft prospect-high expectations is a team like the Miami Heat, who in spite of all these odds and while having either many undrafted players or players drafted late, are making this great run towards the NBA Finals.
This just proves Lebron's greatness even more. The guy has lived up to and EXCEEDED the expectations.

I did not know much about this kid until this video. I was hoping to retire when LeBron retires. I've been watching basketball since the Magic v Bird era and I am ready to let it go. But this has peeked my interest. I want to see where his career goes. Thanks for educating me about this young man. I hope he develops a sky hook and bring that weapon back. I know everyones in love with Wemby's potential but I'm a little worried about his defense. His post defense is weak. He's pretty skinny and unlike other thin bigs, (Embiid, Giannis) he can't just bulk up due to his height and the risk of injury. Idk man, I can see a lot of rim runners just going at his chest.
