  • This is my previously unreleased footage from the notorious Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola May 1, 1994, as seen and filmed as a spectator to the event. w/ Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.
Last pictures of Ayrton Senna alive 7:22 7:40
    More from Imola goo.gl/NDLUcP
Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna died on 1 May 1994, as a result of his car crashing into a concrete barrier while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy. The previous day, Roland Ratzenberger died when his car crashed during qualification for the race. His and Senna's accidents were the worst of several accidents that took place that weekend and were the first fatal accidents to occur during a Formula One race in twelve years.
The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 1 May 1994 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, located in Imola, Italy. It was the third race of the 1994 Formula One season.
Roland Ratzenberger died during qualifying for the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
This race was also Michael Schumacher’s first World Championship in Formula 1.
Amazing sound from 2:40 and about 40 sec.

@@aceinthepace540 That's quite right. I know I was going to be 16 2 weeks when the Monaco Grand Prix took place which was also marked by a very spectacular accident during Karl Wendlingler's first practice session, unfortunately it is one of the dramatic events that marked my adolescence when I was just going to see a touring race on the Dijon circuit in 1996 I had this apprehension and I necessarily thought about it again at the terrible weekend

Thank you for sharing this historical footage. Back in 1994, I was a kid that used to spend the Sunday with my family just to watch Senna. He was our biggest idol, our hero. You can not understand what Senna meant to the Brazilian people. At that time, we were a young democracy. After years struggling with a huge economic crisis, we started to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Senna meant hope. For a long time, however, our hope died with Senna on that sad day. From that May 1st, our Sundays were never the same again…

I am Argentinian and I hated Ayrton because I thought I would reach Fangio's record. When I saw the accident on television I knew that I would never see him again in a race. First I felt respect for the tremendous sportsman he was. And then I felt very sorry. I feel fortunate to have lived in the days of Ayrton Senna, the best racing driver of all time. Greetings Ayrton, my admiration and affection forever.

@@nessuno5403 ? Ayrton never drove for Ferrari.....he was going to sign for them in 1997. He was on a 3 year contract at Williams and would likely have left for Ferrari at the end of that deal. It was widely felt back then that he would go to Ferrari as soon as he was available.

It doesn't just take me back to the life of an incredible man and an incredible generation of drivers in the golden age of Formula 1, it also takes me back to my tiny flat with my aunts in the mid-90s' when the world was still innocent and Blair hadn't wrecked our country. It is shocking how much this video feels like time travelling. I still remember my aunt's gasp that weekend. She was sitting at the dinner table eating lunch when the terrible news came on. I have only just discovered this gem of a video. I was 25 when seeing this race on the BBC, and I remember the sad events of this race. What I also recall was Ayrton speaking with Murray Walker about safety issues at Imola on the Saturday before the race. I was - and still am - a McLaren fan, but with a soft spot for Williams, wanted Senna to win this race.
This and the previous video of your visit to Imola is excellent from a fan's point of view and I loved it. Aside from the awful events of that weekend, the grid girls, insane pit lane speeds and the sound of those normally-aspirated 3.5 litre V8, V10 and V12 engines - especially the Ferrari 412 T1 - are such nice memories. Thanks for sharing this video.

This video gave me goosebumps, I was 1 year old when this happened, but my dad always told me who he was and how he was, that he drove with passion, and was the best of all. When he told me that senna talked with god when he was racing, its not something common to hear, and then you realize how special he was. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I think I might have seen every single video of senna's racing life, but I was wrong, this video was missing, thank you so much again, for this quality video.

In 1994 I was 8 years old and Senna was already my idol. After his death I spent a week without speaking because of the sadness I felt.
Till this day I remember that day and a tear drops on me. I'll always remember Senna like a great human being and a biggest Champion in F1.
Through the years I adopt his philosophy of life to mine. Today I'm 32 and Senna is still my idol and he's always be in my mind and heart. Forever.

Thanks indeed Thomas for this priceless historical footage of such a tragic day in sporting history. Please help me understand something though: I was watching the race that day and seem to remember pretty clearly that Ayrton was evacuated straight from Tamburello by helicopter. So who are we seeing being rushed off on a stretcher? Some comments here suggest that was Ayrton, but it wasn't, right?

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

That is the injured mechanics who was hit when Michele Alboreto came in for a pit stop, but as he left, the rear-right wheel came loose from the Minardi as it left the pit lane, striking two Ferrari and two Lotus mechanics

I first started watching F1 in 1984. I remember watching the race at Monaco that season as a youngster and I was thinking ' who is this bloke who's pushing Prost so hard for the victory? '. In a Toleman as well!! That was the first time I saw Senna racing. We didn't know then how great he would become, although you could see how much talent he had. He would show us in the next couple of years how great he was, when he was driving for Lotus.

Hi Thomas, I'm from Brazil! I was 4 year old in this day and I still remember what happened in that May 1st. I was watching the race and taking my breakfast with my father as we always did at Sundays of F1 race, we were excited watching Senna's leading the race, but suddenly the crash. I not able finished my breakfast that day, I asked several times to my father if Senna wasn't hurted and he always answered me "I don't know!". But when i saw my father crying, i knew what happened. This crash stoped our country. No one did not want to believe that Senna died. The entire country was sad. It was a huge loss for us.

Thanks for sharing this from the point of view of a spectator. That day I couldn't watch the race on TV live so set my video recorder to record the BBC coverage. I still have that video to this day. A sad sad weekend for motorsport.

A great video of historical significance, thankyou. It feels like only yesterday that Ayrton passed on our screens May 1st 1994. Despite Schumacher's Benetton having illegal traction control, causing Senna to set his car's ride height ever lower, eventually grounding out and literally taking off onto the grass/tamburello wall, we must remember that this was a mark of the man. Senna was a ten tenths kind of guy, and only had a fixation upon flat out ultimate performance. Either way he could have died that day in the blink of an eye, with or without Schumacher hot in pursuit. As the Williams skipped right across the track and onto the grass, he was a mere passenger. He tried to react but to no avail. He died doing something he loved, in his prime, on a beautiful day, as a hero. This is the only solace from his untimely death. A true widow maker in every sense, the passive FW16 had no right to lead Schumacher at all that season, confirming what we already knew; Senna was a genius.
