The song is "Power Drive" composed by Johnny Pearson, a UK orchestra leader, pianist & theme composer. He was leader of the "Top Of The Pops" orchestra during the 60s & 70s.
Not only do I love this theme tune as a little tacker, but I reckon the opening vision influenced my taste in cars. So, in 2004 I started hunting around, and bought an HK Kingswood sedan. Still have it too! 😊
I recently heard (from a fairly reliable ex-Crawford source) that the name "Division 4" was somehow derived/inspired by the American pop group "The 5th Dimension" back in the late 60's with one of their songs...which led to the name"Dimension 4" been accidentally typed by a secretary when they were thinking up names and titles for the show and it apparently came about because of a 1969 " Age of Aquarius' upcoming festival poster in Melbourne stuck up in the office and she meant to type D.24 or District 4 and had 'dimension' in her head because of the poster and with a bit more thought, this then apparently triggered "Division 4" which struck a chord...Just a little rumor...You got to admit, the time period fits with the launch of both Division 4 and the Age of Aquarius in 1969..And another little rumor is that Power Drive was the original music to "Spiderman and an American Football TV Show in the 70's'????
It is not just a rumor, "Power Drive" was used in the original "Spider Man" cartoon series from the 1960s on several occasions, most prominently in the episode entitled "Diamond Dust". A lot of KPM music was used in that series, as well as in the "NFL Highlights" films/videos as it was stock music. I've also heard that it was used on the B.B.C from time to time as background music for test cards and the like.
This was written as a theme for an American golf program. I think it was called "Power drive". CORRECTION: It was composed by Johnny Pearson and was used as the theme for an NFL Show.
I first heard this in the States back in the mid-Sixties when it was used as the theme to our afternoon movie. I next heard it in the Sixties “Spider-Man” cartoon.
Got a lot of mileage out of this tune back in the day (“Power Drive”). Not only for this show, but for the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon, but was also used by NFL Films in the 60’s and 70’s.
I was listening to this whilst driving my '65 XP Falcon HOMICIDE replica the other day .... I'm going to see if I can get a period correct police uniform replica if it's legal ....
I used to get the creeps with this music when it came on, l would hide my head under the bed clothes, when mum and dad put the show on! It is one of the best criminal sounding themes ever! Spooky and forboding!
These episodes with the HK are 1969. Then they used HT and HG After that Chrysler Australia Limited got the contract and supplied the series with VH, VJ and VK Valiant Rangers. This was similar to Homicide except that prior to 1969 season they used XP, XR and XT Falcons and before that , it was the Studebaker Lark Cruiser in the 1964 and 1965 seasons . Oddly enough, people often automatically link Homicide to XP Falcons , but it was only used in 1966 and the half of 1967...... subsequent models are seldom if at all are linked to the Crawford Productions.....
It was shown in the UK, though it looks like only one ITV region aired it. I remember seeing it - and enjoying it - 9pm Saturday night prime time on Yorkshire TV in 1971. There was a big drawback as it was a black and white show amongst wall-to-wall ITV colour shows - it was moved to a late night slot shortly afterwards then nothing more was heard of it. The powerful theme music impressed back then and hearing it here it's every bit as good as I remember.
People report sightings of "power drive" various places 60s and 70s, but my alternative memory of the piece is the 'shorts" probably channel 9 would put in between programs when there were not enough ads booked maybe...ski-ing slo-mos of French ski champion Jean Claude Keely (probably not spelled right) and each time, we were like 'Heck!! Division 4 music!! they stole it !!!"
Uniquely Melbourne ❤, listening to this I'm 8 years old again, sitting in our lounge room with Mum & Dad😪😪 I miss those times.
Back when TV was not just worth watching, but something you used to look forward to every night. Now, I dont bother turning mine on.
Very true, I grew up watching Division 4 and Matlock Police in the 70's they were great shows..
Mostly a diet of bogey viruses now. But the art work (graphics) are good.
australia relied on usa and uk for shows it was easier to show than produce tv shows actors wernt paid enough to make films here
Totallyagree
What's a television ?
Crumb cutlets for tea and Divvy 4...…. bloody brilliant !
I have returned in time to my childhood. Listening to this has taken me there. I can feel it.
same here.
One of the most versatile and stimulating themes I ever heard as a kid.
What a cracking piece of theme music. I absolutely loved it as a young kid in the early-mid 70s.
The song is "Power Drive" composed by Johnny Pearson, a UK orchestra leader, pianist & theme composer. He was leader of the "Top Of The Pops" orchestra during the 60s & 70s.
Robert Stevens Also did most of the music for the Spider-Man Saturday morning cartoon in the 60’s. Power Drive was used there, too.
I listen to it in my XP Falcon and pretend it's the sixties all over again
Robert Stevens Anyone know who the drummer was? He’s good.
Well it’s bloody awesome 🤣
I wondered about its origin, even though I'd seen name of composer..
Makes me cry my youth
Tell me about it.!
Takes me back to the early 1970s I miss those days.
You forgot how good this theme music is!
Loved the theme song brilliant!😉👮🚓🌃🏙️🇦🇺
In Melb 1982 Gerard Kennedy drove 3 of us to a wedding in his cab.
I worked with him briefly at Crawford’s during the 1980s on Flying Doctors. Lovely bloke. Wish there had been more like him.
Crawford Productions really gave Melbourne a good name with shows like this.
Awesome theme, loved the stark, high con graphics at the outro too. Great stuff.
Whoever posted this. God bless. This rocks.
When we actually had creative talent in this country. Not like now's short attention span millennials entertainment.
Not only do I love this theme tune as a little tacker, but I reckon the opening vision influenced my taste in cars. So, in 2004 I started hunting around, and bought an HK Kingswood sedan. Still have it too! 😊
The good ol' days when coppers dished out a well-earned walloping to the crims!

I first saw Chuck Faulkner in the 1950s when he was a newsreader.
Fantastic Aussie Cop Show one of the very best ever!😀👮🚔🚓🇦🇺
Loved this show, and my uncle is the spitting image of Gerard Kennedy (and almost the same age), which I got a kick out of as a kid watching the show.
The way they portrayed crims back in these old cop shows was hilarious.
it was brilliant used to love it
love the kettle drums
Thank Johnny for that!
This show's narrator, Kevin Sanders, worked as a news anchor in the United States at KTLA, channel 5, in Los Angeles, in the early 1970s, I think.
He was a news reader for the Nine Network in Melbourne, alongside Eric Pierce in the 1960s. He has a cameo appearance in the film “The Dish”.
Was used by the BBC as theme for their coverage of the world cup in England in 1966.
Gees great teenage memories.. of Australia
This was written as a theme for an American golf program. I think it was called "Power drive".

Then there would be an ad for Kevin Dennis
Update
Back when the Victorian Police Force was arresting actual criminals.
I first heard this in the States back in the mid-Sixties when it was used as the theme to our afternoon movie. I next heard it in the Sixties “Spider-Man” cartoon.

ah Frank, legend... but i dont call him frank, i just call him grandpa
There are three people in the credits I worked with: Gerard Kennedy, Terry Gill and the TD, Allan Leslie.
As sampled by TISM
More, more...thanks.
I was listening to this whilst driving my '65 XP Falcon HOMICIDE replica the other day ....
I'm going to see if I can get a period correct police uniform replica if it's legal ....
FIVE FOUR THREE TWO ONE!
The cop shows these days are nothing compared to those oldies. Men were more distinguished and atmosphere more inviting
Great Australian TV.
I remember this programme
I used to get the creeps with this music when it came on, l would hide my head under the bed clothes, when mum and dad put the show on! It is one of the best criminal sounding themes ever! Spooky and forboding!
Ha! The music had its intended effect then. I remember being mesmerised by the theme as a 10 year old kid....
I would love to see the sheet music to this dramatic piece.....must have some unusual time signatures for sure!
Theme is awesome, there's something about Aussie cop shows
Never saw this show. I was only six when it finished
FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE!
Love the 70s mugshots.
There's one where the guy is smiling. Someone outa tell him he's in deep shit.
CBS used this for the opening to there Early Movie program in the 70s

@@leonotarianni7733 Imagine being a car film star. You'd feel good. (till the stunt man got in & to crash you?)
Thank you. That's a VERY CRISP dub and the Biggest Sound i've heard of this classic theme.
Slight key change for the outro? or pitch?
Rex Kramer Danger Seeker!
aussie classic
Quite amazed this wasn't shown in the UK?

same theme music as feed for 1966 world cup!!
And Spiderman, NFL, etc. Johnny Pearson's best piece.
When you come here because of the world cup 1966 theme:
Even adds for this
I'm guessing this is from 1969 (or maybe 1970) given there's no 9 dot logo?
1969.
The dotty logo was around for the Westgate Bridge in 1970 so I’m guessing it wasn’t far away.

Second only to the theme from The Professionals...
With this intro I'm waiting for the new world order dogsssssss come baby come
Do they sell this show on dvd?
Yes, head to the Crawford's website.

That was before the GTV videotape department was awarded credits for its tiresome creativity. Particularly credits go to John Leonard, regards Dicko.
