It was great that American syndicated networks made British shows available here. I too, have fond memories of “Department S” and many others! We owe our thanks to Lord Lew Grade and ITC.
One forgotten aspect of “Department S,” absolutely unique for its time: the chief of section was African, and knighted! His name was Sir Curtis Suretse, played by Gambian actor Dennis Alaba Peters. Not bad for the sixties!

Totally. The theme tunes from the 60s and maybe early 70s were beyond compare and are still instantly memorable. Randall & Hopkirk, Avengers, Persuaders, Protectors, Department S, Thunderbirds, Joe 90, UFO, Captain Scarlet, the Champions. All great series with phenomenal theme tunes. What a time to be growing up. Wished I’d realised how privileged I was at the time.

@@michaeljames4904- I'm not sure how I missed the MIAS theme as it's up there with the best. Vendetta isn't a series I remember for some reason. Maybe it was a 'past my bedtime' thing 😊. It sounds a little like the theme tune and incidental music from the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock series.

This audio gem was created by the same gent who also composed the theme from THE SAINT, the late Edwin Astley. I loved Orbital's cover of THE SAINT for the 1997 movie, but Mr. Astley's works for.British TV were true classics. (And this critical appraisal from an American Anglophile, no less!)

@@susanhughs1031 Hi Susan. It’s funny that you mention Peter Wyngarde or “Jason King” being bopped on the back of the head almost every time he walked into a room… 😂 It was certainly a convenient plot device to allow him to try on his smooth, signature chat-up lines with the fawning female Nurses! Another show from that 70’s era that I used to watch (& have just recently started binge watching again, on TH-cam, for nostalgia’s sake…) is “The Baron”, starring American actor “Steve Forrest”, which bore many similarities to “The Saint”, starring Roger Moore. In the comments section beneath one of “The Baron” episodes, somebody made almost the exact same observation about HIM being knocked out with a blow to the back of the head in almost every episode! 🤕 Someone else also commented on how much violence there was in “The Baron” - something I didn’t recall at all, until watching a number of episodes over the last few Days & realising how correct they were in saying that - although it was nothing compared to the gory, gratuitous & very graphic violence that is almost mandatory in so many TV & Movie productions of Today…..
I also loved “UFO” - a show that was well ahead of its time & very cleverly scripted (as was “Thunderbirds” for that matter, which shared some of the studio animation for ground & flying vehicles I believe), as did “Space 1999” I’ll wager… As for “The Wombles” & “The Magic Roundabout”… The first wasn’t a favourite of mine (despite the “Top of the Pops” song trying to get us all to “Remember you’re a Womble!” 😊 “The Magic Roundabout” I actually HATED - not because of the show itself (who could ever hate Dougal, Zebedee, Brian or Ermintrude?) but because my Sister & I - being of school age at the time - were allowed to watch what was loosely regarded as “Children’s TV”, until the Six O’Clock News came on… & were then required to switch off the TV & get on with our School Homework. ☹️ “The Magic Roundabout” was always the last programme before the Six O’clock News, so I HATED it, because it was very short & always signalled the impending doom of being sent upstairs to the bedroom to get on with our Homework, instead of watching the programmes we loved… 😔
“Z Cars” was a bit grim & dour for my taste (perhaps because I was a bit too young for it) & strangely enough - although I’ve seen it since - I never remembered “The Champions” from when it was originally screened, beyond the famous signature theme song… What I do recall much better, also starting Actor Robert Vaughan, was “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” which spawned a lot of “Spy” themed Kids’ Toys like their pens that doubled as walkie-talkies… 😊👍 And then there was ‘The Avengers”, of course, which was brilliant & which I watched from its original Black & White iteration. Many shows & British Movies of that era were filmed at Elstree Studios & as my School was located up the road from there, we would regularly spot locations in that locality that were repeatedly used in Films & TV shows. On one occasion, they filmed a scene from The Avengers in our school itself, while we were having lessons, so we were all allowed to stand at the windows & watch Bowler hatted Patrick Macnee, stealthily skulking through the undergrowth as he spied on the villains who were located in our School Assembly Hall! 😂 For my next Birthday, I got a super sneaky “John Steed” walking cane “swordstick” that doubled up as a gun that fired a plastic bullet… When you pulled the rubber tipped sword out half way & then pushed it back in quickly, the build up of air pressure inside the hollow cane, forced the “bullet” out of the concealed barrel at high speed! Happy Days! Take Care, Susan & God Bless. ~ LOUIS C.

The theme is one of the very best of the ITC series. I was a teen when they were originally shown in the UK and remember them fondly, but viewing them now it seems the episodes are a mixed bag. We find many of the stories to be confusing and messy, leaving the viewer wondering what had just happened. It's as if the director wanted to move the stories along quickly and left out a bit of explanation. Still better than most modern TV though.

In the UK at the moment Department S is being re-run on a Freeview channel called London Live. It might be that you've been watching these programmes there or similar. The original episodes would have lasted 50 minutes, that's an hour including 10 minutes of adverts. These days they last an hour including 20 minutes of adverts. The shows have been cut to ribbons and that's why, as you say, they seem confusing and rushed. Still better than most modern TV though.
