      Why dismiss charging stations? No, of course they're not going to work in the logging industry...at least not out in the woods...but they certainly can have a place in other applications. A charging station at the loading docks or the Amazon warehouse for example. The trucks could be just sitting there for hours at a time so why not use that time to charge?

      @jamieclaudeo8107 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      @@autobootpiloot The trucks make a ton of power, you are correct - but what you're forgetting is that off the line the diesel is not making full power (its not in its sweet spot RPM range yet), even a VGT turbo will not be at full boost (there will be lag) and the biggest loss is going to be shifting. Every gear change you lose boost, RPM and momentum. If you've ever run a transport truck with an allison transmission (not an eaton automated), you'd be amazed how insanely fast they walk through gears and get up to speed. in a bobtail race, they will slaughter a higher HP truck because once you build boost and momentum - you get to keep it. Now take Topsy, no turbo to spool, no sweet spot RPM (and its lighter than a comparably spec'd truck) Those electric motors will make 100% torque from 1rpm all the way up to their governed speed.

    One thing that's not usually mentioned is how smooth electric trucks are. Many truckers are loving electric trucks because there's very little vibration from the drive train which means much less stress on their backs. They end up feeling much better at the end of the day driving electric than driving diesel. Backaches caused by sitting are much less frequent. In the end what sells electric trucks might not be environmental, or performance, but just a nicer ride that isn't as hard on the body. Heck, imagine only engaging the generator when you're outside the vehicle so it charges without shaking your back to pieces, then you get in and the generator shuts off giving you a smooth ride.

    You will want a slight difference in gear shifting speed between your two axles to deal with NVH and the axles influencing each other during the shift. Probably work on some hysteresis and regularly swapping out which axle shifts first, to get even wear between them. I don't know how you are controlling these axles, but I would suggest treating them fully individually, so any tuning/programming issues that are not directly related to interaction between them should be isolated and as a bonus, you can do better torque/thrust modeling. Just be aware that you will be putting forces on your frame with the individual control that can cause warping and metal fatigue if not dealt with properly. You are already dealing with that right now with the one axle going into regen while the other is driving, so I assume you have that already worked out.

    Once you do test run on hauling logs, I'd love to see a breakdown on energy usage. kWh used going up, kWh used going down, energy saved using regen, how much diesel you burned (compared to the same test with a conventional logging truck), how many trips back and forth you'd usually make in a day (and how that affects the battery requirements for a pure BEV version), how much you could get out of charging the battery from the grid overnight in a plug-in hybrid logging truck, etc.

    Imagine what they could do if they paired up with Liquid piston with how small and light those X engines or the more fitted one (COMPRESSION-IGNITED DIESEL ENGINES) and still use diesel. IF it was possible to replace the main diesel generator with a even lighter generator that uses gas but produces enough power to keep a charge (Idk how much it truly can produce since it's still work in progress), maybe just maybe cut even more of the weight off while still hauling a lot more. I'm no engineer or truck driver but would be neat to see if it could work.

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe, if liquid piston ever actually gets into mass production and actually does its claims.
      In the current world a diesel is about as good as you can get for this kind of work.

      @@NBSV1 This is true and I understand. But would still be interesting if it could be a better alt. I'm already really happy to see someone doing much better than tesla could ever do. (I already don't like tesla it is more harmful to our environment than people realize) thats a whole other topic that I don't think needs to be addressed.
      But long story short thanks for the time entertaining my idea with a comment.

    Great to see the progresss. Suggestion for axle regen issue: use torque/power feedback from 1 motor to tell the other motor how much power to apply. Sort of a leader/follower setup. If leader starts regen, so must follower with some logic as to who contributes how much. Don't know if this is possible with the available hardware

    The diesel generator is a great idea to get things going and get sold rigs to work asap. The next gen batteries and maximizing regen coming back downhill with a full load will make pure battery electric a reality before long. It’s the future like it or not and hopefully the way you are going you’ll be in the drivers seat!

    This is the first time I ever say this: I love Edison, so much more than Tesla!
    Now obviously there are developments to be made for these beasts to have a real shot at being used as a long hauler like the cab, hiding the wiring, energy management system to last at least 800 miles (a bit over 11 hours per day) and of course a generator to top the batteries in at least 12 hours.
    Now, I'm not an engineer but I doubt this will be more efficient than a conventional ICE system, though I'd love to see that I'm wrong, but it would still has its uses in high torque situations etc.

    Are the production trucks going to have a NACS plug so you can top up the batteries overnight or in downtime before a hill climb? You don't need fast charging for what's essentially a giant PHEV prius. I love it.

      @@jamesphillips2285 Doesn't need to be Tesla. NACS was so good that just this year it got restandardized in SAE J3400 and pretty much everyone is switching to them in the 2026/2027 product lines.
      Now, rumor mill, part of the Tesla Supercharger shutdown was because it turned out that once there was a national standard Tesla wasn't actually doing much if any of the compliance and QA that J3400 and other standards require, and realized it would be cheaper to just kill their internal division than staff up and update their process to comply.
