    You made me laugh when you said working with four-inch squares was way too fiddly... this comes from a person who made miles and miles of postage stamp curtains! LOL! ... Never mind... This pink and red quilt came out beautifully. 👍. ❤🌅🌵🗽

    White! It keeps the colors in the blocks fresh and bright. The garnet red cornerstone (if you want to get as fiddly as that) is a gorgeous detail within the white sashing.

    Kate, thank you for this series, one of the best...especial sharing your thought process in selecting fabrics. I loved the crazy quilt my paternal grandmother started (never finished) that was just large enough to cover me as a small child. Although she died before I was born, I felt I knew her because of that quilt.

    I still like the white, and really like the pink cornerstones.
    The blocks are so very attractive, with their "scrappiness." Highlight their loveliness?
    Maybe play with the cornerstone color...
    White sashing, polka dot border (white with red dots), red binding.
    I know, I am like you, i like the unusual color combinations, the "zing." But...sometimes, the more traditional options do the trick.

    Kate I think anything that speaks to your soul will be the perfect choice. My Mamo, maternal grandma, made all types of quilts mostly by hand. My favorites were the crazy quilts she loving made from sentimental pieces of fabrics. She told stories about each piece that I can still hear in my mind. She would recover each place that became tattered. She taught me to sew, crochet & many other things. Her & my Poppy, maternal grandpa, were the best parents I could of had! So this journey you are taking us on is wonderful! Thank you tons! ❤xo💜xo💙xo💛xo💖xo💚

    I loved this video. Not being a quilter, I hesitated to comment but can't help myself. I love the white between the blocks. I wonder if the same size white border as between blocks surrounding the quilt and then the white with red polka dots outside of that in at least twice the width would look good. It would tie in the red backing into the white borders. Add a few of the corner blocks in pink and red, but not every corner. This quilting is fun....lol!!!!!

    I loved the idea of sewing into four patches, so much that I am rethinking how I am doing a Christmas string quilt. The rectangles are 6 x 8 cut, and I will need 81 blocks to get a nice throw. I was going to sash with green each individual rectangle. I was not look keen forward to it, I’m going to borrow your word of too fiddly. So I am in the process of soil for rectangles together, and Sashing that. Not quite so fiddly and I’m really liking it. As you said, the seam lines do break it up really nicely. Wish I could send you a picture of how it’s turning out. Love love love thank you thank you thank you for your sharing your different ideas. I'd love to see that as your sashing, but of course, only YOU can make the decision. I have collected well over a hundred men's Hawaiian shirts for a quilt which I plan to fussy cut and sash with the black & white checks. I do like It with the simple white to make the squares pop a little but I really like the pink too. I think a narrow sashing is best for this quilt. Maybe the polka dots for the binding?

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you agree about the narrower binding Robin, do you think 1.5" (finished) would be too narrow? that is what i am considering - and yes - dotty binding would be great! xxx Thank you

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Last Homely House East of the Sea I think 1.5” would be fine. I’ve used that width a few times. I’ve come to prefer a narrow sashing. With your squares being scrappy you may have to press your seams to the sashing but otherwise It should work fine. You could follow the rules and try sewing the sashing to a couple blocks and see if you like it or be reckless and just go for It. I think I might be able to guess your choice 😉.

      @@rsislandcrafts When I made my son's Crown Royal quilt, it had narrow sashing and cornerstones. I attached the top sashing, then the right cornerstone already sewn to the sashing that ran down the right side of the block, as I finished the blocks and pinned them up on the design wall. So easy! Then I sewed the horizontal rows together, and assembled the quilt as usual. No long strips of sashing and cornerstones to connect to the already-assembled rows. It worked like a charm, which was exactly what I needed, as it was a rush job. My son was in Iraq, flying his Blackhawk, and my daughter-in-law Donna and I had discussed making a quilt for him for Christmas. She dropped by one day near the end of October, close to my birthday, and dropped the bomb: "You know, if WE are going to make Don a quilt for Christmas, it has to be mailed by December 10!" Aaagghhh! Because of course, the Crown Royal bags were still in bag form and the rest of the quilt was just an idea, at that point. I enlisted my DIL, granddaughter and a niece to cut the bags apart, then placed them in lingerie bags and into the washer to pre-shrink. Those bags are made of FLANNEL, and the cut bag fronts came out of the dryer rolled up into tight, stringy balls - it took a full 8 hours to trim and press enough of them for his quilt top. I decided to place the bag front in the center of a wonky star made of blue, green, and a few purple stars, so it was come home from work, hang coat on the back of my chair at the sewing machine, and get busy sewing. My machine quilter usually stops taking work in at the beginning of November to do her own holiday sewing, but I prostrated myself on her good graces and she agreed to quilt it for me. I was literally finishing up the last few stitches attaching the binding when Donna showed up with the box to mail it overseas. We made it! He got it for Christmas, and said it was a welcome break from all the desert camouflage they were surrounded with over there. All his buddies had quilt envy, wanted to make off with his quilt. I didn't get a photo of it until he got back home with it, such a panic getting it into the mail on time...

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@judithjanes5738 Judith please thank your son and his family for their service. Shipping overseas for the holidays sure does put a bit of a rush to our projects. Happy to hear his quilt made it in time for Christmas. That was a brilliant way to handle the sashing. Those long strips of sashing can be a pain to keep straight and lined up properly. With your way it's just sewing a bunch of blocks together. I can picture what those bags looked like fresh out of the dryer. Ouch! If you ever decide to make another Crown Royal quilt I guess you've learned the hard way to wash the bags before cutting them apart. I'm sure you were frustrated and heart broken when you saw the "mess". My Grandfather drank many bottles of Crown through the years and I've made a few projects from some of the bags. It's fun to look at all the Crown projects over on Pinterest.

    You have whipped that up so quickly! It's going to be wonderful when you get it done. Moss green would be lovely, but I kind of like the polka dot idea as well. As you were listing all the things you are going to do in videos, I was thinking...oh Kate... You have forgotten we are coming into gardening season.... But what a great way to get there faster....

    It was interesting to see all the color strips hanging next to the blocks. Auditioning can really clinch an idea, yes?! I’m still seeing some cornerstone polka dots in my mind’s eye but only mini-dots. Cornerstones could add a subtle touch and break up the white sashing. But only if you want that much extra sewing. My dog is finished, posted on IG and you’ve been tagged. It will be great fun to see all the dogs!

    I suggest: Robin's egg blue, which as you know, is light blue green, with red cornerstones. As I look at the blocks hanging behind you, my first impression in that it 'needs salt', as my mother used to say. A little something-something to give it some contrast. And I put the word out on you, Kate! Shared your videos on my FB page, so there's probably a few quilters from here in eastern Washington state following your TH-cam vids as a result. And with my fav art quilting shop and all the women who hang out there. And a few individual people, as well. So I'm certain I'm the guilty party! (Just kidding about being the one responsible for your uptick in subscribers! ha) All I have referred you to are just as charmed as I have been. Truth.

      I've done a quilt with 1-inch finished strips, bright prints with the same 1-inch WHITE finished sashing. NEVER AGAIN! It did turn out beautifully, but there was a lot of hand-washing required to keep all those blocks pristine! I donated it to our Spokane Valley Quilters Guild to raffle off just among the members to raise funds for our guild.

      ahhhh - can I trace this increase back to you!!! Thank you - I am really pleased to have new people here - I feel like I'm collecting together all the like minded people all over the world and then the party can start! Usually - the more crazy a colour combo is, the better i like it - but I can't deny that the white looks good - there will be dots in there too - but I will have to go fabric shopping - which - you will agree - is such a tragedy! xxx (ha!ha! )

      @@thelasthomelyhouse It IS a tragedy, but sometimes it just must be done! ha What's worse is nowadays, one doesn't even have to leave the house to collect it, the mailman is more than happy to deliver! And I do dearly love Robin's-egg blue; I always bring the first half-shell I find in the spring, into the house to put on my kitchen windowsill above the sink. Such a great colour!
