The more I have studied this DPS6 transmission the more I have become fond of it. It is quite reliable and I drove my Focus hard! It finally smoked the even gears clutch at 208,000. The clutch design is not a dual performance clutch system like some people think. The trans actually has two input shafts. And one clutch drives the input shaft with the odd gear numbers and the other drives the even numbers and also reverse as I remember. So it’s not built for the drag strip! But I think it is a cool design. If you can fix them yourself it saves you a ton of money. They aren’t that hard once you have done one of them. Well done with the videos Ben!
honestly speaking I have a 2012 focus i bought used 2 years ago. It gave me the shudders in the beginning so I changed the gear oil and sprayed fck ton of grease into th actuator holes. kinda made it worse for awhile cos the grease probably got onto the clutch plate. but yeah i just kpt driving and it just fixed itself I guess. for the past couple of months I had literally zero shudder. even starting onramp from a stop. I hated the car in the beginning but now i kinda love it for never leaving me stranded and always starting up. pretty sure its got all original clutch and tcm. 50k miles when i bought it. i put in about20k so we're at 70
I have a 2013 Fiesta with 186000 miles that is still going strong. The TCM failed at 149000 miles and was replaced under extended ford coverage. It is on its third clutch set and all covered and this last clutch has been great. The only issue I have is a bearing racket in the mornings when it is cold. It mostly goes away once it is fully heated up. When it was fully under warranty I was told there was a TSP on the issue and that Ford said it was the output shaft bearings but that did not affect the operation of the transmission and they would not fix the issue. Something like slightly undersized bearings were the issue but they expanded with heat. They addressed the issue in 2014. The bearings have gotten louder over time and they take longer to quite down. I wished they had fixed that issue. This was my 100 mile a day commuter car for ten years before I retired in 2023. Almost all freeway driving at 39-40 mpg
Nice! But, the undersized bearing explanation is BS. At least output shaft bearings are easy to replace! And cheap. Does the noise only happen in certain gears?
The noise happens in all the gears but is loudest under load. In the morning when cold it is the loudest and if I placed the transmission in neutral going down a hill the noise will go away or to the point I can’t hear it. It doesn’t seem to be the synchros as it will make the noise if I leave the transmission in low gear

Ben, you’re killing it with these DPS6 videos! I’d love to hear your input regarding my related issue if you have the time… 2012 Focus 189k miles. I have codes P2832 & P287B. Drivability symptoms are similar to a stuck clutch fork “A”. I swapped the TCM with a used (but supposedly good) one and it yielded the same result. I’ve also swapped actuators A and B to see if the codes would jump but they stayed the same on A. So I don’t believe it’s an actuator issue. I can’t complete the adaptive relearn process (probably because of the shift fork A calibration code). I currently have the transmission out of the car. I split the case apart to verify I didn’t have a sheared stop on the inside of the case. It was in fact fine. Both clutch forks seem to be functioning well. They both snap back nicely after I turn them in 14 turns. I know the clutch, clutch forks, and input shaft seals were all replaced at one point, but I don’t know how long ago exactly. I do have a leaky rear main seal on the engine I plan on replacing while it’s accessible. Is it possible the engine oil getting on the clutch could cause my symptoms or would that just cause some shudder? Or a bad clutch in general? Or, is it more likely to be something else inside the transmission? Or maybe my used TCM is also junk? Based on your experience, what do you think is the most likely culprit in this scenario? Thank you in advance dude
Hey, glad to help! Since your shift drum stops are good, then its definitely a bad TCM. You can bring it to the dealer for a free one and shouldn't have another issue. As long as you're in the US or another country that has the extended tcm coverage
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Wow, thanks for the fast response! I did see your video regarding the extended TCM warranty. Although, it was just yesterday and after I already took the trans out. Otherwise, I probably would have pushed for the new TCM on the dealer’s dime first. But I’m happy to hear you say it’s the easiest thing to replace 😂. Thanks again! Hey Big Ben, This is Off TOPIC here. But I own a 2022 F-150 3.5 EcoBoost V6 Engine. question for YOU. Would you know??? Does this Engine have a "BELT DRIVEN" OIL PUMP??? I can't readily find the "Correct" Answer?? Thanks.
Hey Ken! I checked the manual, and it looks like the oil pump on your engine meshes onto the crankshaft and is directly driven from the crank without a chain or belt
Hi Ben. Question for you if I may....when I have removed a clutch, is there a way to measure/determine whether the thickness is still OK? I know that during the relearn, thicknesses are read but would like to know what to do once the clutch has been removed. Many thanks.
Hi, you can look in with a flashlight to estimate. I haven't seen one actually wear out, just develop hot spots and shudder. If your clutch has over 30k-50k miles it would be good to replace it. The clutch isn't designed to be taken apart so the best you can do is look
Hey Ben, I have a question for you? Thank you for all your videos, they are all so helpful. But i have a question for you. So i have a 2016 ford focus. My transmission finally gave out. I have bought a used one a junk yard that had only 32,000ish miles on it. It sat in my storage for 4 years. I paid only $160.00 for it from Ecology Auto Wrecking back in the day. So i put it n my car, programmed it and wala....It was back working great. But the more i drove it the more it started shuttering in first gear when taking off from a light/stop. The more i drive it the worse it seems to get. Is this something with the TCM or Trans? Now when i installed the trans, there was hardly any dust in the bell housing and it was not wet with any water or oil that i was able to see. Just wondering what you think i should do to get this car to start from a stop smoothly like my other trans did before taking it out? Thanks of all your help. You are the best with these cars.
Hi, I'm glad my videos have helped you! Your question is familiar, did I already answer this on another video? If not, That sounds like clutch shudder. You can drive the car hard to mitigate the shudder, or replace the clutch, forks and slave cylinder using a LuK Repset on amazon. I would replace the clutch and forks/slave any time I get a used transmission. Unless it looks new.
Hello, quick question I just replace my clutch in my 2014 focus and it is shutting a little bite when you start driving. Is it normal for a new clutch? Thank you for your videos that help me understand the transmission
I have a 2012 ford focus 1.6 duratec with a dps6 transmission with 110k kilometers on it. It works fine but i've never changed the transmission fluid. Would it be risky to change it at that milage? Ford garage told me that it should be changed after 150k kilometers but I think it's way too much
Does updated software help with shuddering? I have a 15 focus with a new clutch, forks, bearing and seals and it started shuddering again after a few hundred miles. Used the luk rep set. No leaks on the clutch or bell housing area
It may shudder for the first thousand miles while it breaks in. Software updates used to help back in the day. Most, if not all, focuses have the updated software by now for the tcm
I have a po715 , po7a2 code ( clutch stuck off?) with service transmission light on but car runs very good at 149k miles ....original clutch, forks 2014 focus ...any ideas?
Hi, I think you should look for damaged wiring for the sensors on the driver's side of the transmission. And fix that first. Replace the sensors if there's no broken wires on them. Then see if the clutch code returns. Switch actuators A and B locations to see if the issue transfers to the opposite clutch. If not, replace the clutch and forks, and slave cyl. If it switches clutches, replace the clutch actuators

Could I possibly save my cat with a couple bottles of cataclean because its been on and off and I may have solved the underlying issue. Just wondering ur thoughts
Hi! I think the cataclean will help keep the light off a little longer than currently. If you do that and the spacer, that would be a good recipe! Thanks for watching
