In this frontier spin on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Joan Hackett guest-stars as Margarita, the fiery, sharp-tongued daughter of a Mexican nobleman (Jay Novello). Having frightened off most of her potential suitors, Margarita may never be married-a sorry state of affairs for younger sister Eleana (Susan Silo), who cannot be wed until Margarita takes a hustand. "When Jay Novello is visiting the Ponderosa from Mexico he brings his daughter Joan Hackett with him. Usually visiting daughters are popular among the Cartwright boys, but in this case the overbearing manner of this to the manor born senorita is getting on everybody's nerve. I had the great pleasure of doing business with Pernell in Hollywood, when I wrote a Western for him, where he plays a frustrated Shakespearean actor who reluctantly becomes an outlaw. Roberts was a kind, and very perceptive man. A rare individual.. Truly one of a kind..

What country was Pernell Roberts from. If in the states which one? I ask because I went to highschool with a John Roberts in Iowa and it s remarkable as he and Pernell look and act alike. I haven t seen John since high school when our friends went to Viet Nam to fight in the war .The two were equally loved and adored by their traits of character.

Yes Adam really was great. Is too bad he left. It was said that Pernell couldn't go along with a continuance of 4 grown men always living under the same roof. Because in reality. Men do eventually find a woman and get married. I can understand his thought process. In life their is growth. But I guess back then the writers producers etc wanted the show to remain as it started.

Pernell Roberts shines very brightly in every episode he is in. I absolutely love the Shakespeare connection here and every show has Adam...also his father, (sometimes the other 2 reading)...and NO "festus" in here, thank goodness. I love this one.

Loved this episode. Both Joan Hackett and Pernell Roberts played off of each other perfectly. Adam was always the sexiest of the Cartwrights. I watched Bonanza every week with my family when it first aired. The whole family enjoyed the show so much. Great cast. Watching it now throws me back to my childhood. So glad to be able to see these episodes again.

LOL Bonanza be crankin' out the funnies in Season Six, but Adam/Pernell truly seems to be enjoying it, at least as they're doing it. To be able to go from dead serious shows of various types including hard action, social commentary, and melodrama, to straight up LOL comedy, is a testament to the cast of this show, and the writers/producers they worked with. The whole part here with the WofF trying to teach guitar to Hoss, the results of it, and Joe's laughing throughout 😂
You are so right. The diversity was incredible and of course now and then it could fall flat but in the main it is still the best entertainment that the years have not deminished.👍

Adam was the only person who wouldn't allow that spoiled rotten bratty woman get her way with everything that she did. That made him much more caring and intelligent than anyone else.
I laughed so hard when Adam after pushing her man in the water to start her fire up again started reminding Margarita that she was 'calm. Caring patient, peaceful and etc. Hahaha 😆. Oh Adam was so funny. Oh I loved that. Hahaha still laughing.

Even after so many years it is still a magical show. I was very young when I saw it in the mid 1970's. Some things are just timeless.
The last season ended in 1973.
@@lynettepalecek3141 Bonanza was shown in different countries at different times, often many years after the original broadcast in the USA. I got to see it in the mid 70s, too.

I watched a lot of reruns as though it had been the first time. Never bothered me to know the difference.

At 12:20 of this video the actor forgot to say his line with "a Mexican accent." He sounded more like a true Californian.
It is important to understand where someone is coming from when they are frustrated, angry or upset for any reason. But you cannot excuse the ridiculous behavior and temper that she had, especially at the beginning. And I was so happy to see Adam give her the spanking that she deserved 👏!! If you have a fire inside of you, you must learn to balance that with a healthy outlet and control yourself at the same time.

i think it goes both way. he lost his temper just as much and "spanked" her, basically hitting and humiliating her. You dont slap a child for having a temper tantrum or beat a horse for not wanting to ride. People need to know how to handle their anger, in how they take it out on others but also in how they behave to calm others down. Fight fire with fire and all you get is more fire.

Ben, Little Joe, Hoss are too soft, accommodating. Adam is the "Quiet Man." Even spanking an adult "child." Intellectual....Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" provided skeleton for this Western depiction. Be what you are, there's someone out there who is your match. You never know. Her arranged husband was looking for a fireball, not a sheep to be like all of his flocks. Pernell and Joan played well opposite each other. Good writing, comedy without being nasty. Again, a didactic Western with still contemporary themes. Never saw this when I was growing up in Hawaii by the sugar cane fields. I look back and relate to the messages of those Westerns..... wanting to ride horses, get the bad guys, preserve and protect the good, and explore the vistas of the good ol' USA.
