      At the height of his power, after he had brought the 7 kingdoms peace and prosperity he went and had a dwarf that everyone laughed at him for. “The lion has been humbled by the gods.” Whats worse? His lady wife died giving birth, the one thing he loved in this world. The sole reason Tyrion still lives is because Tywin decided not to throw the grotesque infant over some mountain because no matter if he was a monster or not, he was still his son.
      Tywin decided to give him a chance and Tyrion simply lived to disappoint him.

    Tywin is a fascinating character. You could say he’s a villain, but he really was someone who knows how to get shit done.
    That’s the beauty of the ASOIAF. None of the characters save for a couple of them fall into the normal troupes that are in the fantasy genre. It relied on realism and those troupes were turned on their heads.

      @critictactic7090 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From the point of view of the main characters (Tyrion especially), he does indeed come across as a villain, but is he though? He commands respect of his lords and is somewhat loved by the small folk (not very much, of course, but well enough). He seeks order, stability and prosperity, as well as the maintenance of greatness and respect his house has. Essentially he seeks to bring peace and stability to Westeros, albeit on his own terms. I would hesitate to call him a villain. But then, NOBODY is either perfectly good or bad in ASOIAF. Still, compared to many other lords, who simply try to advance their positions without much regard for the realm, I think Tywin is a pretty good character, with some dark touches to him.
      EDIT: And by the way, when he served as hand to The Mad King, the realm prospered and stability ruled. And this despite the Kong’s wild schemes, unpredictable nature and bad temper.

      Tywin is a villain. He removed Aegon V's reforms that gave the commoners rights, he broke sacred laws and traditions, traumatized Tyrion, and allowed his men to rape, pillage, and commit entire genocides.

    • @TheSuavest
      @TheSuavest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@gfilmer7150 although Tywin does some fairly terrible things, that does not inherently make him the ‘villain’ as that would mean that there must be some foil provided to stand in as the ‘hero’ and last I checked there is not one person who is an accurate foil for Tywin... interestingly enough Tyrion is considered by many to be a ‘hero’ of the story and yet of all the Lannister descendants Tyrion is the most like Tywin... imho people need to stop trying to find heroes and villains as the human experience isn’t very good at making either of those things.

    I always think Tywin was dumb to offer Tyrion for Elia. The key was to remove the competitors for Rhaegar's hand in marriage so Cersei could marry Rhaegar. *Princess* Elia was far stronger competition than *Lady* Lysa Tully and Dorne is a better ally than the Tully's. I don't know why Tywin didn't set up the Elia/Jaime match to leave the route more clear for Cersei and Rhaegar.
    If Jaime took Elia, who would Rhaegar take? Cat/Lysa= never royalty. Lyanna Stark = maybe too young/promised to Robert. Ashara Dayne = maybe too young but Aerys is 1/4 Dayne, so it's maybe an option. Other minor house = possible, but Aerys prefers houses with more status.

      I feel like the Lannister rule over the Westerlands aretrult at an end. After Cersei is dead or deposed, there will be a House Baratheon of Casterly Rock. Tyrion could get it but I don’t think he will as literally everybody hates him in Westeros and don’t think Daenerys will give Casterly Rock to him.

    I think Kevan's submission came more out of comfort and duty than weakness. Some people prefer receiving orders than giving them. I do think that if Kevan lived longer he would have let go of the throne as soon as he could as it really isn't what he likes.

    Actually I think that Tywin only weak more the position that the Lannister had in the realm that his father ever did, Tytos was a very weak Lord, but Tywin policy of making the other nobles fear you instead of respecting you only made the numbers of the Lannister enemies grow over the years, that, and the fact that Tywin was more worry about his legacy than his actual family, and his totally recklessness and blindness when it come to his immediate family made all fall apart in the end, let not speak that Tywin was a total hypocrite, bashing Tyrion for the same sins that he did in secret.

    Find it crazy how so many people defend Tywin and proclaim him one of the greatest characters. Let’s say he’s admirable, sure - he raised his house from a joke to one of the most feared houses in Westeros. But shit, Hitler lifted Germany from the Great Depression into an imperialist state, is he now admirable? Tywin slaughtered innocent women and children to make his house great. He was an evil man. And at the end of the day, he lost, it was all for nothing. He failed to create a legacy and ended up dying on the toilet - all because of his cruelty towards Tyrion. His cruelty destroyed his legacy, and ended up with his humiliating death. So many people fail to see the bigger picture with these characters - Tywin achieved many short term successes for his house, but he failed in the long term, catastrophically. And he only has himself to blame.
