I also wanted to thank you for your kindness in helping my return back to Fujifilm after a few years elsewhere. Very very happy with the system and looking forward to an X-Pro4 someday…
It's funny how Fuji shooters are always like "You don't need full frame" and "I don't want to carry that heavy glass around," but then as soon as Fuji releases an f/1 lens, suddenly you hear "Oooo it has a full-frame look" and "Who cares how much it weighs." Nice video and photos, in any case.

It’s actually cheapest lens if you factor in quality. 50mmf2 is most expensive quality wise. Just that it is F1 makes it collectors edition. It is already selling at 30% premium in India. 56/1.2 is selling at suggested price while 50mm/f2 too is at premium of 20%. I am waiting for for its price to fall to suggested msrp of $1500 :) currently it is $2100 equivalent in India.
Hi John- I had a chance to get one of those used for $800. I was so tempted, but decided to go with the new 56 f1.2 WR for size and weight reasons. I agree with all of your reasons for loving the4 50 f1.0, though, and some of the APS-C critics forget that although it’s f1.4 DOF, we still have the light gathering of f1.0 and the lower ISO it allows…
I was a little concerned with the price and getting one prime for the cost of 2 possibly 3 other lenses, BUT I am so happy I took the leap. From the detail shots to the portrait session was just wow. Every time I thought about a different lens while quick checking the previous it was "You know a little more time won't hurt." I would rather jog the 10 to 15 steps to reposition than zoom with this lens. When you add a little light BAM. I've used it for sports as well during night football games and in the gym during basketball games. Make sure you put the tracking focus on and Boost. There is a ton of room to play with starting from 1.0 and dropping it to 1.8 still leaves plenty of light with a bump in sharpness. Definitely recommend.
I was scared to spend the money and to give up myn56mm f1.2 but dammmmmm I am so happy I got this 50mm f1.0 ,like you said brah,it’s so good ,I find myself using it all the time now like I knew I would and I found I can foucus on my models three feet away which surprises me
Thank You for sharing your knowledge. I shoot a lot of indoor and outdoor photography. Indoor mainly Studio. I Struggle to find the sweet spot as in where to set my focus Square. meaning big or small. I like to shoot fast and move. (run and gun) only to find I missed focus. I only shoot moving subjects with 16-55. 56 is too unreliable. I also use the Zone to help me nail more in focus percentages. I guess my question is what is your go-to setting focus point? At this stage, I use a single Square medium size and zone. I don't bother with eye auto, for me too slow and unreliable especially at a wedding reception the eye auto is hilarious, to say the least. I also came from 5d3 85 and love the fuji system I just try not to hate the focus system.
You named it to a T. That's how I focus as well. Single point square that's a decent little size. I usually move it with the joystick or focus recompose. I don't use any continuous autofocus unless someone is walking towards me, away or to the side. And it's very particular shots. For that I'll use zone autofocus. But for the most part it's just moving it around myself. Especially with something like weddings you have to keep all of that in your own control rather than the cameras.
For the price this is probably Fuji’s best lens prime wise. Outing the beloved 90 and 16 1.4 or even the 35 1.4 or 56. Value wise their are better options that are cheaper but for those less on a budget they should definitely get this. (Not counting the 200 as it’s very niche) The only reason I haven’t bought one yet is waiting to see what goes on sale for Black Friday. I highly doubt this lens will be on sale or just slightly off but you never know maybe huge discounts on other lenses.
I bought the x-t5 with the kit lens 16-80 and the 50mm f1 because I want to grow as a photographer and do portraits.. man it is an awesome lens .. awesome .. 1100 dollars but dang
Thanks for the video, I was just looking into getting the 50 F1! I was wondering if you could make a video going in depth with your camera settings + how you shoot. Manual vs auto for certain scenarios, making sure you get your focus right, etc... I use the XT3 and often get in scenarios where getting the proper exposure is a pain, for example.
That would be an awesome video. I've been thinking about doing something a little more in-depth in the near future so you should be seeing something like that soon.
Considering a 4 figure prime lens and not fully comfortable about when to shoot manual or auto (hope you're talking about semi-auto)...you should probably focus on basics before worrying about spending that kind of coin.
Thnx for tne video and sample images. Have you considered a full frame 85mm 1.8? Paired with a full frame body it should yield very comparable results, right? Strangely, this full frame setup could be a way cheaper option to this very expensive Fuji 50mm 1.0. Thnx for your advice!
It all depends on your field or fields. I shoot and film Weddings, Portraiture and Special Events. Ideally to be real, if the Viltrox didn’t create their version of this lens I would have bought this because I don’t need WR but I think it’s worth it. The focal length and Aperture is definitely worth it. Get this lens if you need the WR. I usually don’t shoot at the much of a wide aperture, I usually shoot at the 1.8 and up. If you have 1.0 Aperture you should shoot at 1.0. The rich creamy bokeh is beautiful
I wonder, do you still use and love the lens..? I mean I really like it a lot and agree with your points but I just didn´t find it special enough to justify purchasing it. It´s neither wide nor telephoto and I don´t seem to be able to replace my wide or long lens with it (23mm +56mm/ 50-140mm). Maybe, if it was half the price I would be more willing to find a way of incorporating it in my workflow :) One big plus of this lens I found when using it is the reliability of the AF. It´s way above what I´m used to with my 23mm f1,4 and 56mm f1,2 lenses and on par with the 90mm f2- that is it almost never misses focus. So I really liked it for this fact and for the image quality. Anyway, love your work!
I do still use it. It's my main go to as far as my longer lens on wedding days. And like you were saying the reliability of the auto focus is key here. It's just amazing and quick. It's a staple in my kit now.
@@jbivphotography I bought it! :) Mainly, it´s for its reliable AF. And also, I want to settle on one lens for taking portraits and this one seems like a good one to settle on :) Coming to a session and using 3 different lenses is such a distraction. Hearing your review kind of surprised me, as most of the reviewer’s I’ve listen to panned this lens. And specifically on auto focus? Saying it was too unpredictable. It makes me wonder if the 50F1 got an update recently? I opted for the 50 F 2 since it focused faster than the 56 1.2. I like the 75 mm look. I would probably rent the 50F1 out before I bought it, to make sure if it would work for the kind of photography I do. I would mostly use it for street photography.
I’m happy with my 56 1.2. for now but I definitely have my eyes on the 50 mm F1. I mostly shoot studio portraits so I don’t really need fast auto focus, I don’t really shoot weddings. But the 50 one point Zero is definitely next on my list of must have lenses.
Hi Jake. In fact, I heard different opinions on the f1 autofocus. Some say it is great, others bad. I'm a professional sport (events and match/race/etc) and landscape photographer. I was thinking to buy it to get the famous "full frame look" into my images but I'm concerned about the speed of the autofocus. Clearly a dealbreaker in my case. I think it's a matter of autofocus settings at some points. But it'll be interesting to know how far
@@AndreaJump actually, since this comment, a few bouts of firmware update have made the lens an absolute dream! AF was fast and very accurate. Although I am selling it now to switch to canon for work purposes. I do recommend this lens!
Thanks for posting! I moved from Sony to Fuji for the mobility and lightweightedness. As such, this frankenlens is a terrific option for those aspiring to full-frame equivalency - but for me the trade-off isn't why I joined the Fuji X movement. As a note, I would use one of the available f2.0 lenses for movement captured via continuous focus. Great job as always!
John, just curious, what setup do you use to shoot this studio shots, it have more depth than anything i've seen on fuji's (aps-c's mostly), is it backlight working that good to create this 3d look (like canon's have from the box on ff camera's)? :)
Bro I must have a bad copy because that lens can’t focus moving subjects. What are your settings? I dislike how it tracks. I feel it is no better than than the 56mm.
I think more and more about replacing all my Canon stuff with Fuji camera. Canon, Nikon and Sony are technically perfect cameras. But when I watch your videos I see that Fuji camera has a soul. And this lenses, colors and sharpness. Wow ... :)
Well how much better really is it then the 56? I have the 56 im happy with it, but my 90mm is my favorite it’s ridiculously sharp! Would the 50mm f1 be as sharp as the 90mm f2? If yes then im in.
Been looking for a lighter system to compliment my S1R (an absolute chonker); seeing the ƒ/1.0 perform *that* well might even replace it... Excellent video!
So I remember you mentioning in a video (and I guess this video here) that you shoot with the smaller f2 lenses and to choose those over the faster ones.. do you still stand by that? I just picked up the 23mm f1.4 and it works amazing. But I’m building my collection still. Should the rest if the lenses I get be the faster ones? I’m thinking about the 35mm, 16mm, 50mm?
I think a more realistic comparison would be between the 50mm f/1 and the f2. The auto-focus and the sharpness of both lenses wide-open have equal performance. The only comparison that the 56 has to to the 50mm f/1 is the aperture - but what good is it when you can't use it successfully... consistently? The 50mm f/2 is a phenomenal lens, amazingly sharp at f/2.
John I love you videos and hoping you can answer a few questions. I wanted to know your thoughts if the 50 handles sun flaring better then the 56. And the second question is the 50 all metal like the 56 meaning no rubber focus grip? Thank you for any help. Corey
Hey John, thinking of upgrading my 56 1.2 to the 50 f1.0 for weddings, how do u find the af, especially in low light, any missed shots... would luv your opinion in af
John, is the IQ, the 1/2 of stop of extra light worth $500 more than the 56 1.2? Will your clients notice? I would argue that the 56mm would look even better in some case just because it’s a true 85mm and not 75mm when you factor in the crop size. I’ve seen images of them side by side and honestly the only thing I would say is that the 50mm is sharper and that’s because I had both images side by side. I think you are going thru a honeymoon phase with the lens. I’ve seen other reviews and most of them are not so impressed with it when compared with the 56mm. More so when at 1.0 the chromatic aberration is so noticeable. With the new firmware update for the X-T3 focusing is on par with that of the X-T4 and the 56mm focusing is very good. I don’t see many pros going for it if they have the 56mm if not just to have the latest shiny toy. Remember that the whole point of going fujifilm is to have less weight on you at least that was one of your points.
How does it handle the chromatic aberrations ? Are they easy to deal with in post ? Even with youtube compression they are pretty present i.e. at 2.33 minutes ...
Yeah I was looking at some files the other day and noticed it on there. It's pretty noticeable. I haven't tried any heavy editing to fully remove it yet. But I'm hoping to have more thoughts about soon.
According to kenrockwell.com it's not usual chromatic aberration but spherochromatism (aka colour bokeh) which he says "which makes sense for a lens so fast".
It seems faster to me. I've used it now at a couple of weddings. Haven't had any "traditional" receptions since weddings aren't fully back to normal yet. But in the situations I have used them in it seems to work great.
@@jbivphotography Assuming no focus breathing like 56 1.2 when focusing distance is far away from the last focus point. Upgraded X-T3 firmware version 4.0 this morning. Focus on 56 1.2 does seems more snappy but the lens has an older motor so it does have the same focus breathing it did before the firmware upgrade when focus point is distant away from last focus point, either close or far. I have a 50 f2 as well but really like the depth of field of 56 1.2. If 50 1.0 focus speed is as good as 50 f2, will sell both 50 f2 and 56 1.2 to just have one lens, 50 1.0, best of both; fast focusing speed and exceptional dof!
How much better or faster is the autofocus compared to the 56 1.2? I have been wondering if upgrading to the 50 is worth it, the main thing is the autofocus for me.
I was waiting for that lens for a long time but I lost my patient in December and switched to EOS R. RF50L f1.2 is a great lens even it is not 1.0 ;) IQ from Canon camera is much better but I still prefer Fuji images ;)
I haven't had a chance to use the X-S10 yet however, I don't think they're comparable. While the quality is the same the X-T3 is going to give you more professional applications (higher shutter speed, ability to use a battery grip, dual card slot). I think the X-S10 would be better compared to the X-T30. But I'm hoping to get one soon so I can try it out.
I’ve tried the 56f1.2, love it and it also has that 80mm full-frame look. Also love the 50f1.0 (from your video, dope shots btw) Not sure if the tiny f0.2 stop diff is really what I’ll need, with that hefty price tag. It’s a big investment.
f0.2 is not a consistent increment i hope you realize... it's a half stop between 1.0 and 1.2, so similar in light gathering from going from 1.4 to 1.8, which people obviously pay for. can make a real difference in really dark situations.
@@ikeahloe F stops work in log. Not sequential, so F1.2 Fuji has it as a third stop increment. So its about 2/3 of a stop less light then F1.0 hope that makes sense.
@@eliaspap8708 I hope you were adding context for the original commenter to what I was saying, and not responding directly to me, since I was saying the same thing simple terms for him that +0.2 is not a consistent increment, so if you were 2.8 and did +0.2 that's not the same as going +0.2 from 1.0. I needed no extra understanding, and wad fully correct to begin with.
@@jbivphotography Cool cool. I definitely feel like Fuji does a good job making each lens have its own specialized uses. I'm not a full time photographer but I could see myself waiting for the 50/1.0 to go on sale and trading my 56 for it.
Im not going to shoot any weddings with my X-T2 and 56mm f1.2 anytime soon. They will be back from their honeymoon by the time I got focus. 😂 But I do love my 56mm for private use. My birthday and xmas pictures have never been this awesome. Im going to upgrade to the X-S10 to reduce weight and improve IQ at the same time. Im really glad to see another pro lens from Fuji, but this one its not one for me.
I am a Canon shooter and I wanted to get the 50MM 1.2 last weekend but I ended up getting the RF 28-70 F2. I LOVE IT!! But now seeing this F1 action on your video.... I guess I know where my income tax return is going. 😍📸
Love this! Though I am not a wedding photographer, it would definitely help for my branding work and documentary. I can't wait to make that investment on the 50mm F1.0 :D
@@joebeta I've been trying to tell myself for the last month that I don't need the gfx50r and that my xt2 is more camera than I need...but it's a losing battle
Dang. That is a hard choice. Especially with the 50 being so hard to get. Before I had the 50 I really do LOVE the 35 f2/56 combo. It was my go to for all weddings.
I've noticed that myself. I wonder what cameras and settings everyone has been using as well as that can make a pretty big difference. I've been using this lens as my main go to for weddings so if I end up seeing a difference I'll report on it. But for now everything seems to be working amazingly for me.

As such, this frankenlens is a terrific option for those aspiring to full-frame equivalency - but for me the trade-off isn't why I joined the Fuji X movement. As a note, I would use one of the available f2.0 lenses for movement captured via continuous focus. Great job as always!
Super curious if the 50 f1 works well with the xt5 autofocus?
Imagine putting a cinebloom filter on this lens! 😍
OOOOOOOO that would be crazy!
I feel it is no better than than the 56mm.
does the gfx take these lenses with an adapter? would love to see how they render on a gfx50r or something
Good morning Mr Brach IV.
Thank you for another video.
Me too!! Got mine!!
I love too . Thank you bro
I think more and more about replacing all my Canon stuff with Fuji camera. Canon, Nikon and Sony are technically perfect cameras. But when I watch your videos I see that Fuji camera has a soul. And this lenses, colors and sharpness. Wow ... :)
Loving your content! Will you be getting your hands on the new 56mm f/1.2 R WR Mark II? If so, I hope that you post your thoughts and a comparison :)
Thumbs Up! One word Fabulous. Thank you for convincing us to buy one.
I will get it when i will be upgrading from the 6DmkII to the XT-4, nice vídeo🔥
Nice. I moved from a 6D to the Fujifilm system as well. You’re going to love it.
The **feel** of the 50 is just MMM!
@@H2O_Atlanta
The 56mm on a xt3 or newer is fine and usable. It's not the best but totally allright.
John I love you videos and hoping you can answer a few questions. I wanted to know your thoughts if the 50 handles sun flaring better then the 56. And the second question is the 50 all metal like the 56 meaning no rubber focus grip? Thank you for any help. Corey
Do you know when this lens will be back in stock? I’ve been wanting to get it, but can’t find it anywhere. 😕
Same!!!
for some reason my focus ring doesn't focus?
Hey John, thinking of upgrading my 56 1.2 to the 50 f1.0 for weddings, how do u find the af, especially in low light, any missed shots... would luv your opinion in af
Deff better in my opinion. I've switched over to only using my 50 f1 at this point and I really can't look back.
@@jbivphotography Thanks john:)
Using XT-3s over XT-4? Is it bc you have 2 XT-3s and only 1 XT-4?
Yes. It’s mainly because I have 2 X-T3’s and also I can’t get down with the flip screen for stills. I usually use X-T4 for video.
How is the focusing speed for indoor wedding/receptions compared to 56 1.2 or 50 f2. As good as 50 f2?
The father of the bride looks sooo young (3:27). I was shocked and had to pause the video.
If you would only own 1 lens and did portrait photography, would this lens be the best?
Hands down. It would be a great investment. It also can do so much. I need to make some more videos on it.
@@jbivphotography please do!
What's the best fujifilm camera for action photography.
I feel like it would be the X-T3 or 4. Those are SUCH snappy little cameras.
Where can I buy?? I can’t find on Amazon
I usually buy most of my camera gear from B&H
I was waiting for that lens for a long time but I lost my patient in December and switched to EOS R. RF50L f1.2 is a great lens even it is not 1.0 ;) IQ from Canon camera is much better but I still prefer Fuji images ;)
Awwww that's sad. It's a dream of a lens. If only it could have come a little sooner.
@@jbivphotography He'll be back.
heyy which do you prefer the new xs10 or xt3?
To me it would come down to which one has better AF.
f0.2 is not a consistent increment i hope you realize... it's a half stop between 1.0 and 1.2, so similar in light gathering from going from 1.4 to 1.8, which people obviously pay for. can make a real difference in really dark situations.
Note 0.2 in F stops between those two lenses is a different of 2/3 more light. 66% more. Its enough to make a noticeable difference.
Are you gonna be keeping the 56?
I still haven't decided yet. Still trying to figure it out as far as use cases.
But I do love my 56mm for private use.
I bought the lens 3 days ago. unimpressed wide open. Looks too soft
Aww. I’m sorry to hear that. It’s still one of my favorites!
Just gave up and ordered mine just today!
haha love it
Love this! Though I am not a wedding photographer, it would definitely help for my branding work and documentary. I can't wait to make that investment on the 50mm F1.0 :D
Oh yeah. It'll be great for branding work. Such a clean and crisp lens.
Not for the time existing but definitely in the near future will be renting it first before taking the plunge 💰
Totally try it out. You're going to love it!
AF vs 56? Immy biggest gripe with fuji fast primes is the dated AF.
I'm so tempted, but I have the GF 110mm f2 (for GFX) and that lens has spoiled me.
Oh boy how I want to get a gfx just for that lens
yeah that 110mm is amazing! I use it all the time! the 80mm 1.7 will be nuts when it comes out.
@@AcidicDelusion It's the reason why I bought the GFX 50R. lol
@@TedNghiem I can't wait to see what that 80mm is capable of.
@@joebeta I've been trying to tell myself for the last month that I don't need the gfx50r and that my xt2 is more camera than I need...but it's a losing battle
So torn between the 50 f1 and a 35 f2/56 combo. Stinks not knowing when the 50 f1 will even be available and it's 2021.
Dang. That is a hard choice. Especially with the 50 being so hard to get. Before I had the 50 I really do LOVE the 35 f2/56 combo. It was my go to for all weddings.
@@jbivphotography Found a 50 f1 on a camera store's website! f1.0 here I come.
I've been seeing many mixed opinions on this lens, precisely when talking about image quality and AF.
I've noticed that myself. I wonder what cameras and settings everyone has been using as well as that can make a pretty big difference. I've been using this lens as my main go to for weddings so if I end up seeing a difference I'll report on it. But for now everything seems to be working amazingly for me.
These photos are amazing! Great job 💯 I love the look of these photos so much! Great colors and the light looks gorgeous
Thank you so much!
Love this lens... too bad it’s pretty much like buying another xt4 lol. Until I can afford it, viltrox with have to do.
I remember when fast 50mm lenses were tiny. Now they bigger than zoom lenses.
Great !
Finallyyyy 😍
It's the BEST!
Definitely will be my next purchase... that price tho... 😩
that price makes no sense when you've got the 50mm f/2 performing like it does.
@@H2O_Atlanta yeah I need to look into the 50mm f2, I’ve got the 35mm f2 and I love it
I didn”t notice any weight
Yeah I think it was so drastic to me because I use all of Fujifilm’s smallest lenses. This lens compared to other camera brands is really small and light.
if fuji could make each prim lens to 1.0, it will beat the all full sensor camera.
I agree. Imagine a 23 or 35 f1.0 omg!
Except for depth of field and high iso. Physics is physics.
I am not a professional, the Viltrox 56mm is fine for my tastes, budget and size.
I haven’t had a chance to use any Viltrox stuff but I’ve heard so many great things that I want to try it out.
APSC's lenses should be sharp
