    Frizt, The Wolverine just bumped itself back up to favorite medium mech. In this weekend's game, two equal forces had to control a pass. It was a Marauder, a Thunderbolt, and a Wolverine (team A) vs a Warhammer, a Crusader and a Shadow Hawk (Team B). There was a choke point an both sides knew the battle would be decided there. Team A charged the point, while team B hunkered down in range of the point so they could rain fire on anyone passing through. B sent the SH to stand in the gap and slow them down. The SH jumped behind the Marauder and Wound up punching it out with the Tbolt. The Wolverine moved in to finish the SH. Because of how B had set up, the Wolverine was savaged for three rounds by 2 PPC's, 30 LRM's, and whatever the SH could throw (not much). The Wolverine lost almost all armor, an arm, an AC, a laser, and suffered multiple internal hits to engine and gyro...but it JUST WOULD NOT go down. Team B wasted three full turns trying to take down the zombie Wolverine. On the fourth turn the pilot decided he had enough, and jumped out of there. The Warhammer could focus on the other mechs...where were they...there the Tbolt is...base to base. The Tbolt unloaded, and punched with both hands..while the Marauder was backing it up. In one round the Warhammer suffered an ungodly amount of damage, an engine hit, a gyro hit, and a cockpit hit. He fell over and the pilot went to sleep. They both turned to face the Crusader. He had a choice...face an untouched Marauder, a Thunderbolt that had just punched a Warhammer to death, and a pretty beat up SH...by himself...or he could leave. He threw up his arms and yelled "nope...hard nope...I'm out". If B had not focused all of their energy on one mech, they would never have allowed a Tbolt (and its three torso mounted lasers) to get that close. It made the kill, but the Wolverine won the battle. This was a tabble-top experience for the ages. THIS is why I play Battletech :)

    Best medium mech: Vindicator. Good armor, good firepower, versatile. It can alpha strike with no heat issue standing still, it can do that for 4 turns walking, 2 running, 1 jumping full range.

    Phoenix Hawk has always been my favorite, not saying it is the strongest or even the best but I just love it and have learned to use it rather well(especially once in the invasion era). The Cicada is probably one of the worst pre invasion, though I believe with the upgrades of XL engine and such it becomes a beast post invasion able to be a very mobile sniper platform if the PPC version or skirmisher with the other versions post invasion. A pack of four zipping around can really prove fatal to even assaults.

    Ever try the Ceppelin varient of the Cicada? Ppc and 2machienguns can be scary.
    The weak point of the cicada is its inability to torso twist. If playing in that way quirked, its detramental, without junpjets added on by The Free Worlds League remarket if the Cicada, with an XL engine.
    The Cicada C3 was my batttletech intro mech on tabbletop. So it has a place in my heart, fast and powerfull, abble to snipe at a distance and give hell-
    But of corse old cappelin mechs always had a thing, for using trying to punch above a mechs weight class. As the CCAF had to utalizes thier recorcess were they had then as they got spread thin.
    Meta wise yes, all speed freaks, kinda crumple, and should ytalize jumpjets to stay prevalent. As often the plotting neaded to keep a light to light medium mech safe, takes some carfull planning and stratagy.

  • @Mortvent
    @Mortvent 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The Cicada and clint are my 2 low tier ones (the clint simply because it is very lacking in backup after the ammo is gone)
    The best is kinda a mix.. Shadowhawk is the swiss army option, Centurion is the trooper (very good damage spread, just lacks JJs and extra speed). The Vindicator is a nice one as well.
    That is the problem with mediums and most heavies, there is a ton of good mechs in the weight class that can fill what I call the trooper role.
    Decent across the board, good for multiple engagement ranges, etc. I know a lot prefer their specialized ones, but for me the best is one that works well at multiple roles.

  • @Beatnik59

    Hard class to judge. I like a lot of mids, but looking back on my experiences, one mid that I've never had a problem with is the Whitworth. It doesn't get a lot of love, and even less glory, but it always finds a way to justify itself in my lances. Twenty LRMs out of two launchers, three medium lasers, and jump capability for less than 1000 BV is hard to argue with. It can fill in a bunch of roles for me as the game progresses, and it's that versatility that I find makes for a good medium mech.
    The worst mid, for me, is the Vulcan, for the opposite reason: it's too specialized. I can find roles for the Cicada to perform, like as a scout or as a light mech mugger, but the Vulcan is a very specialized infantry hunter, like the Firestarter. The thing is, a lot of mechs can do that role (even the Locust or the Stinger), and outside of that role, I don't find many uses for the Vulcan in a game plan.

    • @WolfHreda

    I would nominate the Crab as best Medium Mech. Good speed, looks like an Assault Mech, and is an Energy Boat completely independent of ammunition concerns. Lack of Jump Jets is a drawback. Agreed the Cicada is pretty terrible pound for pound, which is undoubtedly why the DCMS uses them in swarms.

  • @hermes7587
    @hermes7587 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    There are a lot of good Medium Mechs like the Phoenix Hawk, the Vindicator, the Hunchback or the Griffin but
    my absolut favorite is the Wolverine WVR-6M! It has better firepower, armor and endurance than the stock Wolverine.
    The Large Laser is a huge improvement over the AC/5 and it has a much better chance to penetrate the rear armor of many medium and heavy Mechs.
    On the other side I agree that the Cicada is not a good Mech but I would like to add the Assassin - very agile but terrible armor and firepower.

  • @danielmarshall4344
    @danielmarshall4344 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Best - Phoenix Hawk. I like the Enforcer. Close thirds are Centurion and Bushwhacker. I can not find a worst, they all do good at what they are.

  • @Hardcover_Pilot
    @Hardcover_Pilot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Succession era, I prefer the Centurion. Yes, it doesn't have the mobility of the Wolverine or the Phoenix Hawk, but the LRMs and autocannon give it a ranged punch that you don't find in a lot of medium 'Mechs. Now, if we can toss in designs created after the Helm Memory Core arrived on the scene, then my allegiance goes to the SHD-5D. Before that design the Shadow Hawk, while not a bad design, tries to do too much to be an objectively good 'Mech on it's own. The -5D, however, gets enough extra oomph with its upgrades that it starts to shine much more.

  • @haveswordwilltravel
    @haveswordwilltravel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Favorite Medium is the Phoenix Hawk. I really enjoy the 6/9/6 mobility and the Large Laser range and firepower. The machine guns are only good for close backstabbing and anti-infantry, but the PHX-1D variant ditches them for a much needed heat sink. The mech itself is a blast furnace but so much fun to play. Close seconds would be the Vindicator or the Boackjack for their snioing ability and their jump movement.
    On medium mech I hate to play is the Clint. It is basically a light mech with medium mech cost. You would be better off with a wasp or two for the BV.

    • @TheDaNuker
      @TheDaNuker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This reminded me. Fritz mentioned that the Stinger was his pick for worst light.
      In a way, the Phoenix Hawk is a grown up Stinger with more armor and strapping on a Large Laser and second medium laser. Now it becomes so much more effective in this era and is in the lore one of the favorite Command Mechs for light 'Mech lances. Lovely backstabbing 'Mech too, just watch out for 10-point damage blasts to the head as that will kill your 'Mechwarrior.

    • @haveswordwilltravel
      @haveswordwilltravel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PHX could definitely use more head armor. Maybe use a half ton of MG ammo since the magazines are kind of explody anyhow.

  • @FakeSchrodingersCat

    Best is so hard to decide because there is a lot of bias to pick favorite mechs. My pick for best I want to choose the Centurion or Crab but the Hunchback has a certain 'oh shit' gut reaction when it shows up that makes me give it the spot. When a mechs biggest flaw is that it is so dangerous that it is automatically the primary target of every enemy mech it deserves some recognition.
    For worst the Cicada probably wins but the Vulcan gets a dishonorable mention.

  • @Charistoph
    @Charistoph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's hard for me to lay down my favorite Medium, but my current go-to is the Wolverine (but that's probably because I don't have a Centurion, and I'm partial to playing the model). My least favorite is probably the Hoplite. I don't like it's looks, it doesn't have energy weapons, and the weapons it does have are basically a weak Centurion. The Assassin (possibly my second least favorite) at least has speed to compensate for its weakness, as does the Cicada.

    Best medium mech, either the Griffin or the Phoenix Hawk LAM (cus it was so good, getting it ended Crescent Hawks Inception). Best by Aesthetics: Shadow Hawk, but it didn't really see its true value unless it was the SLDF Royal or the 5M and later. Case helps the Shadow Hawk so much. Worst medium mech: CDA-2A Cicada.

  • @lexington476

    • @haveswordwilltravel
      @haveswordwilltravel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am a big fan of the Shadowhawk. But you have to keep that mech moving. It is not as tough as the Wolverine and doesn’t have the bite that the WVR has.
      The armor on the SHD is close, but WVR beats it out by a few points.
      Finally WVR has a longer jump range (5 Hexes), SHD has only a 3. Dispute those differences I love the Shadow Hawk and would be happy to run one of those.

  • @WolfHreda
    @WolfHreda 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Much as the WVR-6R is a solid trooper, I'll take the Large Laser and added armor of the -6K or -6M any day. I hate that the -6K loses its jump jets, but it mounts more arnor than some heavies, and the lack of jump jets means it manages its heat more effectively for prolonged engagements.

  • @Geredis089

    When it comes to the top-tier stuff, I'd say that it really depends. But I'd say that the upper echelon is, more or less (in no particular order):
    Shadow Hawk, Centurion, Vindicator, Hunchback (4P, not an AC variant), and Wolverine.
    Definitely agreed with you on an AC20 Hunchback having too many eggs in one basket. But a 4P with 8 mediums and a small, makes for a very interesting presence on the field.

  • @chevypower22350
    @chevypower22350 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My vote for best has to be the HBK-4P. It has enough heat sinks that once you get in medium laser range you can keep blasting away with 6 Medium lasers and still have the battlefists available. If only 4 of those lasers hit you are forcing a PSR. Great armor, the only drawback is the speed.

    Medium 'Mechs the work horses of the BattleTech Universe. 3025: Best 'Mech is the Phoenix Hawk it moves 6/9/6 with excellent armor and good weapons selection. Worst 'Mech is Hoplite with it's pitiful speed and firepower, it has max armor and it needs it to survive. Though I must admit the Cicada is a very close second.

  • @KageRyuu6

    Cicada 3C ain't that bad, fastest non-vee PPC in game, with some MGs for anit-infantry. Course could be better off just dropping the MGs for an extra HS and or armor, or swapping over to a LL and Flamer.
    As for the worst... Scorpion, because much like the Cicada 2 series it's too fast for it's own good.
    As for the best... Hunchback, particularly the 4P, because nothing beats 8 MLs in a brawl, save for maybe 9.

  • @TheDaNuker
    @TheDaNuker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Medium is very difficult because due to tonnage restrictions for me, but these are my picks:
    Non-variants, but these are 3025R and not in the original 3025:
    Best: CRB-20 Crab, Warhammer-lite with twin Large Lasers, no ammo explosions to worry about, good armor, good heat management, decent speed. Only downside is that it is not jump capable.
    Worst: STL-3K Sentinel, Vulcan has a very specialized role, but this 'Mech ball not only mounts terrible weapons (AC/5,SRM2,SL), but also has no auxiliary backup role and has poor armor. Even the Hermes II has a Flamer...
    Variants:
    Best: WVR-6M Wolverine, this Marik Wolverine is my pick for best medium 'Mech for the Succession Wars. Excellent Cav 'Mech and worth upgrading to if you are in House Marik service as it effectively nearly doubles the regular Wolverine 6R damage output in all but 16-18 hexes. Check out the First Succession War Sourcebook for a writeup.
    Worst: SHD-2D Shadow Hawk, absolute trash variant. Why on earth would you remove armor to put on just an SRM-2 and more ammo? This 55-ton 'Mech has the less armor than a 35-ton Valkyrie and shorter jump to boot.
    You aren't right in saying Cicada is bad, it's just an over engined medium. The only exception is the PPC variant but that's very rare and has... machine gun knees. 😅

    It is not the first time I heavy Wolverine being cited among the best mediums.
    It is a trooper kind of mech, much in the style of Centurion, or Shadow Hawk, or Enforcer.
    Can do just about anything - and while it will lose to more specialised machines, it can do a bit of everything - and can plug any gaps you may have.
    I would probably also consider Crab - fast, reasonably well protected, and packing a pair of LLs - that is decent enough firepower so that it can't be easily ignored. Good alternative for long campaigns, and if you feel paranoid about running out of ammo.
    I'm a bit conflicted about Cicada being the worst, because this is kind of a mech that I want to like... But let's be real - it is a very fat light mech, really, beyong the PPC-carrying variant, it is just questionable.
    You have vastly superior mediums for proper medium role. And if you want to hunt those annoying light mechs, you have stuff like... say Phoenix Hawk.
    I mean, Cicada is not even a very good light mech hunter, due to abysmal armour.
    The only mech I think could be similarly bad is Assassin.

    Worst? The Sentinel. An AC5 does not a sniper make, especially when paired with an oversized engine, weak armour, an utterly pathetic selection of close-in weapons (which break) and so much ammo on board it’ll explode for four-score and eighty days if you do much as look at it funny.

    Best : Dervish, plenty of firepower, good mobility, works really nice as a budget Archer (If you wanna go all in on long range then Trebuchet)
    Worst: Hermes II no useful firepower (basically has 1 thing to fire for each rangeband, but no quantity or redundancy), meh mobility, terrible armor. Cicada is still worse, but at least it has 2 medium lasers in the same rangeband.

      (Sorry to necro your comment, but...)
      Lock 'n load some flak ammo into that Hermes II's autocannon, and it makes a good "ghetto-AA gun" that can also cook infantry. You lose the ability to make called shots with the AC5, but gain anti-air that's fast enough to keep up with your recon lance yet cheap enough to squeeze into a heavy lance for those problems that "just aren't worth sending a Warhammer." Plus it does the same damage to (non-immobile) 'mechs either way.
      Love the Dervish too, btw.

    Mediums are another hard one to call. Need fire support? Vindicator, Hunchback 4J, and Blackjack 1 are good mechs. No better bodyguard mech then the Hunchback 4G at this era. Scouts? Phoenix Hawks, Cicada's, Assassins, and Vulcan.
    But for the Succession wars I'd have to say the Wolverine 6M. Its got a large to close and medium lasers and SRM 6's do work at closed ranges.
    Other era's only make Mediums better. Even comparing newer variants of, say, the phoenix hawk to something like the Komodo and you still get good value.
    However there was one mech ever banned from tournaments, the Wraith TR-1. Make of that as you will. Good mech, best medium? Not sure, after all the WoB did put out a Gyro-less medium mech capable of putting 20 damage to a mech from 18 hexes away.
    The worst medium mech. Oh boy, I'm torn. I absolutely HATE the Griffin 1N. That thing farts too hard and overheats real bad. Get in its face and all it has is harsh language (I don't count melee because EVERY mech can melee).
    But no, I think the worst medium mech is the Dervish 6M. Why you ask? It has long range, couple medium range weapons, and is a 5/8/5. Two issues with this mech. #1 it has low armor. Only 120 out of 185. All the other 55 ton mechs (minus the scorpion 1N) have more armor. #2 and this is the HUGE problem for me. It has TWO tons of SRM 2 ammo for only two launchers. People don't like machine guns because most early mechs bring a 400 point bomb with it. Why is it okay for the Dervish to have TWO 400 point bombs. Oh you crit my arm? Guess I'll just die now.

    • @Magermh
      @Magermh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Issues with the Dervish use informo ammo. Cooks chick, infantry, buildings, Stalkers, and provides you with light at night. After you try this product you will be wishing for a second SRM or reloads.

      @@Magermh Still doesn't solve the problem of having a 50 point bomb in both of your arms. Still doesn't solve the problem of needing an 8 on the cluster chart to hit with both missiles.
      Rather flamers against infantry, never played a scenario where i need to destroy a building (and even if I did, punching it goes faster), that stalker may be a hot box but 2 extra heat a turn? woo, and playing with night rules is absolutely horrible unless its megamek. Night rules slow the game down sooo much and you have to make constant pilot checks just to walk.
      But you know what, I'll meet you half way. Give me SRM 2 rules from Battledroids and they become a GREAT weapon. SRM2's made 0 heat in battledroids. Sure I'll take a 9 hex machine gun weapon.

    Worst, Assassin: Yes very flexible in movement, but a very inconsistent damage profile.
    Best, Wolverine: I agree it's a good little "trooper Mech", and I saw someone mention the Crab but though it has a all energy weapon benefit, that isn't as maneuverable as the Wolvie.

    Best medium has to be the KTO-19 Kintaro. One of the most powerful alpha strikes in battletech, good speed, reasonable armor. It runs hot but it outguns some assault mechs in close range, it can close in on slower targets and rip them apart. For the opposite/worst mech in medium tonnage, I'd pick the ASN-21 Assassin; always bothered me for being too undergunned to do the job of a hunter-killer.

  • @sundoga4961

    I have to say, I have a grave dislike of the Hunchback. Sure, it's deadly enough, at relatively short ranges. But it's a one-trick pony, and really has very little to mitigate damage, as well as being a fire magnet - until that AC20 is dead, at which point it is ignorable.
    My favourite is the Griffin. It still hits hard, has jump, and if you lose your primary weapon, you still have an LRM-10 pack to fall back on. Sure, it's optimized for long ranges, but it's an excellent and deadly mech when at long range.

    Best medium? I am in favour of hunchback 4P for that. A bit scattery but lots of hit rolls for those hard shots, odds are something will connect. Worst? Cicada, hate that useless hunk of junk, 10 tons to heavy, get a Hussar and you get a better mech everytime

  • @MrNachtwulf

    Best would be Enforcer, worst is the Shadowhawk. Unable to the damage that the tonnage demands.

  • @nathanbrown8680
    @nathanbrown8680 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No surprises the original Cicada is your worst. It's one of the worst cases of Charger syndrome outside the Charger itself and I can't dispute its position as the worst medium mech.
    Runner up for worst is the Hunchback. The combination of slow movement and an exclusively short ranged armament is just not acceptable in my eyes. But at least it's not outperformed by a mech half its weight.
    For best I have to give the nod to the Phoenix Hawk just because it violates the nearly ironclad rule that any canonical mech near an optimum weight/speed combination has to have some other gratuitous flaw.

    Ok, so i have two for best Medium mech
    1. Hunch back, Give me that Baller any day, What a Mech, You see this guy, you have to take it down, AC20, and Fists Geting up in your FACE! its intimidating, it pouts a pressure on your opponent. and i hear you its an all or nothing mech, thats why if you want take the HBK-4P Variant, SO MANNY medium lasers. non Ammo Reliant, SO MUCH LAZOR!!!! VARRY WOW! in-fact it has even more potential damage then the standerd, just not an all or one,
    2. Phoenix Hawk LAM. By far the best Lam, but it just give you Options, and in a campaign ( RPG) its a Mech with a not just tactical Flexibly, but also Strategic. Need a Fast redeploy to another battlefield? Phoenix Hawk LAM, Need a Mech that can swoop in and quickly steal the data core or objective? BAM! Phoenix Hawk Lam,
    its a Flexible Mech and can be a long rang harasser, and an objective graber, and even its stander mech is still a good mech.
    as for worst,
    i hate to say the Shadow Hawk, but it just fells like it dosent do enough

    I'd say my favorite medium mech is the Phoenix-Hawk, due to its balance of speed, maneuverability, armor, and firepower.
    my least favorite would have to be the Blackjack. It's slow, and packs no decent long range punch, due to its main weapons being a pair of AC/2's.... goddamned AC/2's!
    ... whoever intentionally puts an AC/2 on a Battlemech should be dragged out into the street and shot, but not with an AC/2, with something more powerful, like a SMALL LASER!!!
