Infantry are the reason why every mech should have a machine gun or a flamethrower. It's the difference between a mech that's made for honorable duels between the nobility and a mech that's made for war.

I have run defensive hidden infantry in a city before. MWaHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!! It was soooo evil. I had mechs fleeing the city. My greatest moment of pride was when I had several infantry platoons chase an Atlas out of the city.

Glorious. To have the boots on the ground send these “new kings of battle” running.

This is when we go full Russian. The natural enemy of entrenched infantry is the artillery.
Actually why I dislike infantry. It triggers my sense of morality. :-p. To misquote Paul Masters: the first rule of Urban Warfare is: eliminate the Urban Center... But technically the infantry broke the Ares conventions first.
Granted at that point dropping a rock from space is more effective. If the defender is going scorched earth, why not help them? Be a good neighbor!
Best use of infantry I find is hidden units acting as spotters especially if the other side has no ECM. Squad deployment only, of course.

Someone jumped my hidden units in a city with a warhammer, expected infantry instead found a pair of demomisher 2s in a crossfire formation, literally one hex out in a building on each side of the street. First round I cut the legs off and a bit of torso armor. Second round I lose half my armor plate as I hit a MG ammo bin and the warhammer explodes for four score and eighty days.

IMO - Artillery (Indirect Fire) units are indispensable an asset in ANY battle force. When you are able to hurt your enemy without being threatened in return, you gain an unassailable advantage! The strategic value of artillery is not merely to wound your enemy, but to preserve the health and the value of your entire force. Artillery is so valuable, it falls to the rest of your force to preserve the artillery, even at all cost!

Its why the main unit i got has a Lance of Helepolis Artillery mechs. And the main OpFor has a level II of Marksmen Artillery Tanks.

The problem is this forces me to learn Aerotech rules. Because aerofighters are a natural enemy of artillery.

tank tactics; survive long enough to get a shot off........
back in the day when i actually had some luck i once took out 2 mechs in the same round with duel head hits from a demolisher tank.
my favorite vehicle that i designed was a 50 ton hover optimized for ramming. movement was 10-15. i called it the "ramm dodge"
my second favorite, before they changed the rules on me was a hover with 60 mgs in it.

I like the idea of having a campaign start out with mechwarriors starting as footsoldiers in a ragtag combined arms group that try to pick off mechs to build their lance

My favorite tactic was to have 2 srm carriers hidden in a choke point hex...I have killed assault mechs in one turn doing that ( more than once )
Irregardless however, a burning tank is a dead tank and it's very easy to torch a tank in many different ways

I love to take a standard unarmored truck and load as many rockets as will fit into it, then wait in a building or by a chokepoint. A 20 ton truck may be lost but I will send 300 rockets your direction in trade.

I screen the tanks until I get them where they have good fire arcs. Then flank with my mechs. The motive crits don’t matter as much if you’re where you want to be. A light mech with teeth is great. Infantry in a city is a nightmare. Tanks are pretty scary too. But tanks trade mobility for firepower and cost. They’re pretty squishy though all things considered. I think of them like a mobile pillbox.

As a replacement for the LRM carrier a SturmFeur has more armor. You may change up a formation that your thinking of with a pairing of SturmFeur, four Patton, and two Rommel tanks for a core. Its hard to find a replacement for the Shrek PPC carrier. That thing is a battleship turret mounted on a tank. The Maxim Hover vehicle is like the best IFV known for infantry. At your request the Pike or Shrek AC-5 carrier could match the Partisan. Thanks for pointing the Partisan out.
Massed Hunters I have tried using as replacement for LRM carriers. But had little success with them until heat seeking or smoke ammo was added. For the role of AA or offensive advance screened. Lay the smoke down move up with your advance or charge. Give a +1 to hit as the gap gets closed and could block LOS.
Hover tanks score best in open terrain moving at flank speed for hit and run, strike, and fire on the move. I wish for a cover of motive types for players please. Cheep tank :). Invest in the crews as vehicles rock. Wheeled vehicles are seen in city fights or urban warfare. FN Hetzers and Strykers. Turrets are important for all vehicles but when your getting mugged in a dark alleyway by a Hetzer. Its never forgotten. Other players wish to learn tanks in Battletech start with a company of Vendetta (aka the Leopard tank) and its variants. Interesting vehicle that may do everything but hold on to armor and ammo. Getting in to more advance stuff. The Drillson...the SRM-2s are not for damage. Smoke effects from fire. Shot, smoke, and move. Has this tactic ever come up in play?

Anti-mech Attacks are generally a waste of time, but Swarm Attacks are particularly suicidal and wasteful.

If the mech is shut down, swarming becomes a viable option

If I can get tanks to good firing lanes slowing down isn't as bad. Get up and in position to back up mecha. As people say about urban mechs, think of them less as slow mechs. Think of them as a mobile turret.

How many tanks vs. mechs can a dropship carry? Do you get more bang per dropship slot with mechs?

    • @doomedwit1010
      @doomedwit1010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

2 tanks per mechbay.mechanic. I don't remember infantry. The problem with infantry is food and water. I think it's 150 tons for a mechbay, so 150 infantry for one mechbay.
Edit: apparently now it's 50 tons for a 50 ton vehicle bay and 100 tons for a 100 ton vehicle bay. So inexact.
Apparently it's also 150 tons for 1 fighter bay.
These are combat bays - except for infantry they can be stored as cargo too but in cold/dry storage, not combat ready. But take up space equal to weight basically.
