This is BY FAR the BEST advice I’ve ever heard for building a career as a filmmaker who wants to do narrative work. Thank you so much for this info man!
What I love about Darius as a content creator is not only the type of videos he makes, but also how he approaches his audience. He’s not like all the other creators out there, who tend to fit their audiences into the same category. Instead, he understands that some of his viewers may struggle in certain areas that others don’t. So he addresses his main question in various different ways. Thank You Darious
Tip for any filmmakers still in high school, just search your schools drama class for volunteers, I just casted my short film entirely from people in my drama class.
I just wrapped shooting a 7-page script with two actors from Craigslist. Both were 3x my age and I couldn't be happier to have worked with them. I would highly recommend Craigslist as another option to explore for both cast and crew.
This is great advice, I don’t have trouble finding actors because I have gone through all these steps. I would add that working on other people’s projects also helps you connect with the acting community.
THANK YOU 🙏❤ this speaks to my heart, had been a problem that had stopped me from writing scripts for aaaages (cos I didn’t know who I could cast 😓🛏). I’ve since been in a student film myself AND now been cast in a play (so I’m meeting more and more actors as my life progresses), but this advice is STILL super useful and awesome to hear (…I’ve been super guilty of thinking / writing over-complicated ideas for filmmaking projects in the past, and not getting anywhere because of it). This advice has made it super managable to get re-started on my once dormant love for filmmaking so THANK YOU once again 😊🙏
@@D4Darious Yep. Somehow get together, in the same place, have the available time, ad infinitum. :) Hmmm...I wonder if you could pull off a short between two people in two completely different locations. Gives me ideas.
This is great advise! Back in the day when VHS was the tech, I had this problem. With the longer edits, time needed, my actors/Friends gave up. After watching all of your videos and listening to the way you make a film has made me want to start again! Thank you!
@D4Darious I cannot emphasize enough how great it is to get long-form improvisers on your cast if you're doing comedy. They bring so much energy and creativity to set.
I had this problem here last year. Got in touch with a "writter" who had written a bunch of scripts but never done anything with them so he wrote a short script (about 4 pages). He sent me the script asking if I'd be his DP. Took a look at the script and broke down in shooting terms. We were looking at at least 3 different shooting days at 6 locations some of them outdoors in public and some very difficult to shoot at like an AIRPORT! We were also looking at about 3 actors. The locations went from simple (an apartment) to ridiculously difficult (a bank, an airport). He also had no money to pay actors. I laid out a shooting schedule and explained the order we could shoot things in (explaining that movies were not shot in chronological order), I also offered alternate options for the more difficult scenes (shooting at a local small airstrip instead of a large international airport for example) and that if he could get the actors, I'd DP, supply most of the gear and even edit. He rescheduled 3 times because of actors flaking the day before the shoot before giving up.
Very good advice. Having made a feature film when I was living in a small town, getting the right people too act for you when no one knows who you are or what you can do is very hard. I would add that if someone act's in your film for free making sure they are feed well, plus tea and coffee will make for a better working environment.
There are 16 salty thumb downs on this video that will probably help more people that Darious can imagine. Great vid! This vid encapsulates the age-old advice of "start small", sadly the sentiment isn't enough to convince people that it's the best thing you could possibly do. However, I'm confident that your video will do more justice in convincing most people to not jump out the box trying to make a feature film with zero experience and zero help.
You are the best! I'm always learning more about filmmaking with your videos and at the same time getting better at understanding english. I'm from Brazil and you were the first person I started to watch on youtube that speaks english. Last time I called 2 friends to act in a 2 pages short film, as you always say to keep the things simple, but they don't really respect the filmmaking process and laught at bullshit at any moment while I'm trying to make the thing happen. I don't know if the best thing to do for the next time is to call other friends or to insist at the last. It's understandable that they are not been payed, but at least being quiet and respectful would be great. It's boring to make a film with people who aren't at the same vibe as you of getting the best results as you can... Anyway, I'll try harder to make more films done to get better at it, build a good resume of work and start to one day call real actors.
Thank you for motivating me to get out there and just start doing it. You said on Indy Mogul that someone could even make tying their shoes cinematic. I said challenge accepted!
Yo I started watching you this past February and I was hooked. Started by getting a black panther action figure like you said. Now I've started a TH-cam channel and I purchased a Panasonic G7. I'm still not exactly sure how to use it, but my friends seem to notice my improvement. Thanks for all the knowledge bro. Keep the content coming and maybe I'll be a real film maker someday.
There are social media sites that you can find talents. You can also make an ad about your film to talents. But be well aware that your talents need to be compensated for their skills. If you all can find talents that will work for free consider yourself lucky. You can also ask you family and friends to be talents. You might to train them all and agree that they will commit.
my tip is to ask other filmmakers if they want to step in as actors, if someone shares your love for the film then they are more likely to understand what it means to you and be more willing to help you
I appreciate this video so much, and I had watched it a couple years back, but I've since changed up my channel to focus solely on filmmaking, and I'm putting this to the test to see what happens for myself and sharing the experience. Some amazing advice that I'm working now to put into practice and document the experience.
He sorta glossed over it but going to meet/join various acting groups/community theatres/schools is a great way to find people who want to act. They want to act, you want actors, win-win!
I’m about to shoot a 9-page script using students at the high school where I teach film. Having good relationships with my cast and crew has really helped this process. Be clear with what you want without being a jerk about it.
May I point out this is a perfect and good example of rational self-interest. "The Virtue of Selfishness" - Re-think that word that makes you feel guilty, there can be virtue in it.
woow! I started whaching your videos a long ago, I have been disconected from youtube some months and now I come back and you have grown your audience like huge, congratulations! you are doing the things right! and also very interesting video! :D
But I thank you for reminding me one important tip. To allow yourself to start small. I have alot of big ideas but i need to remember not everyone else has that same vision and don't blame them. So if i start small and show the good stuff i can do in at least a minute long short, it'll be much easier than trying to pitch something big to people who've never heard of my work before. Thanks
This is basically exactly what I did, starting a few years ago, and it totally works!!! I can now get basically as many actors as I want for something! Now the challenge is, time to make it, and figuring out what it is?
Hey man thanks for making this video. I know I'm commenting on it years later but I still kind of go in and out of making films. I shot a film last year and it made a festival and I just watched it and thought to myself wow I have a lot of work to do. It's great to have a resource like this to go to. Wishing you the best.
I felt hesitant at this advice at first. But I was able to come up with a few ideas, for how to make my short I was working on smaller. Along with a series structured like your short guide. Thanks and keep up the good work.
The problem I have is coming up with ideas for films in the first place. I want to start with test footage first, then microfilms, then short films. I think I'm going to start with scenes that replicate videos from the lighting tutorials from Aperture and Film Riot - try to come up with the same look - but with way less gear at my disposal.
D4Darious looking forward to seeing your new goodies, thank you for the video. I screwed up before trying to find actors I know exactly what you’re talking about.
When I see you talk about this it reminds me of Cooper Films and his style of shooting. Keeping it short and sweet and filming with his inner circle. If anyone is reading this I suggest you look him up on TH-cam. The same guy who did the fresh prince remake trailer that went viral. He has great work!
Dude thank you SO much! I’ve dealt with some dropouts recently, and this definitely helped give me an idea on what to do about it. Once again thanks and keep up the cool vids! 👍
Wow, this was extremely well put together. Great job young man. Fantastic video. God Bless you Darious. Talented young man and knowledgeable. Excellent.
YES!!!!! 2 Actors, 1 Location If you ACTUALLY know how to make such a scene interesting, this footage is SO VALUABLE to actors who are ALWAYS looking for material that showcases their acting chops for their reel. Do it 2-3 times. Actors will be lining up to audition for you, especially if you pay them $50-$100 for their day and feed them.
I made the mistake to write a way to large script. I'm not even done yet, but I'm gonna try to film a large piece this vacation. I used a friend and myself as an actor and my nephew as the cameraman. The script is way to long, but I always have food, drinks and I want them to have fun. Which I think that they did so that's great. I don't want to be the guy telling them what to do all the time so at times I said, what do you think? I'm in a sort of film school since last year, but we haven't done much collaboration with the Acting department in our school. I also suck at talking to people I don't know which is something I know I need to try to do more. This video has a lot of great advice Darious, Thanks!
@d4darious Dude could you please make a video about microfilms - like how to write them, what genres should be picked or avoided, how much time should a working guy spend on one microfilm - that general sort of thing. Wanna keep hustling, you know. :) Plz do help🤘
Ok this is great advice and had I heard it a few months ago I probably would have followed it. I'm currently in the middle of my first dramatic short in which I have casted 5 of my non-actor friends. LOL We are having loads of fun atm. I hope it doesn't implode! That's for the inspiration D!
Finding actors never seems to be the problem - maybe if you are in a major film center where people are used to being burned by filmmakers - but in my neck of the woods half the people in town would jump through a hoop of fire to be in a movie. Just put out a casting call - pay your actors a nominal amount, $100 a day + points, and handle yourself professionally - you'll find all the actors you could ever want.
0:42 that cut deep I had a group of maybe 10 to 12 most were theater kids from school filming day for the pilot came only my friends showed up started the series one out of the four didn't show up and never again did this happens another got another forth member stopped showing up cause ego or whatever right as season 2 was about yo start filming and one person who I never even spoke to joined from someone else did nothing and than never came back
Never heard of this approach before. It's great. I'll write the first two-pager now. Does the film have to include dialogue when I'm making it specific to their personality?
Me and friends just act in our stuff but that’s because it’s like dumb content lmao, but when I do a serious project I have a small list of actors that I acquired from film school that trust me and my abilities so that’s always nice and probably one of the good things I got out of film school
Very helpful! Thank you for the amazing content! This came right in time when I was casting for a short film of mine that is 2 pages long and at 3 locations haha. Has one main character and two other actors
Bro same. I’m 17 and me and my friends are making a mafia movie. It’s my first film and we’re at about 23 pages atm. As much as I like this advice, I think that just thrusting yourself into filmmaking headfirst is a great way to learn.
Finding actors is the biggest problem I am facing at this point in my career. I'm glad you made this video. Much love from Tallahassee, FL
No way I'm in the same city with the same problem!
lol. just use yourself and a green screen and cloning!
Put an audition notice in the Theater department (not the film school) at Florida State University. You won't find actors in a film school.
Same lol
Did you ever find them?

I'll find them in Area 51 ! Beautiful Aliens from Andromeda. Surely it's gonna be a hit film
Andromeda? Eww! Them and their tired faces?
I still didn't make my first short film but you made it seem so simple! hahaha Thanks for the encouragement :)

This is a brilliant help. Thinking of filming a simple short in a cafe would be a good start for me.
What movies inspired u to become a outstanding film maker?
That's a good idea for a video.

These are pure gems
Fantastic tips. Thank you.
good advice. I wrote an entire script but I can't find actors. I'm gonna do what you said and see how that goes. Thank you!
Finding actors never seems to be the problem - maybe if you are in a major film center where people are used to being burned by filmmakers - but in my neck of the woods half the people in town would jump through a hoop of fire to be in a movie. Beyond this, your method seems a bit like a waste of time - spend 7 short films working with your friends trying to get them into working with you, just to drop them for real actors - whom will have never worked with you, and you are back at page 1.
Just put out a casting call - pay your actors a nominal amount, $100 a day + points, and handle yourself professionally - you'll find all the actors you could ever want.

oh, and in case you're wondering...nope, i'm still working one film number 1...but i move fast when inspired...
Never heard of this approach before. It's great. I'll write the first two-pager now. Does the film have to include dialogue when I'm making it specific to their personality?
