- In this vlog I travel to one of Spain's premier wine and food regions, La Rioja and in particular its capital Logroño. Is this the best place to eat and drink in Spain? That is the question.

Hello there! I'm from Logroño. Actually, I'm from Calahorra, a ~25k town in La Rioja, but I've been living in Logroño for 20 years. I more or less agree with what you said. However, there are some things I'd like to point out:
1.- It's true that it isn't well connected with the rest of Spain. We usually use Bilbao airport if we want to travel abroad. There are ALVIA trains to Madrid and Barcelona every day.
2.- About being landlocked... well, we're about 1h30' away from the coast. Many people take day trips to Castro Urdiales, San Sebastián, etc on Saturdays or Sundays. Of course it would be easier to go to the beach if it were on the coast, but how many people living in coastal cities do actually go to the beach everyday?
3.- The fact that it's not on the coast is actually better IMO. Coastal cities along the eastern corner of the Cantábrico (Bay of Biscay) have a chaotic weather because of the geography. You can reach 35ºC in Bilbao when the wind comes from the south (Foehn effect), but then you can spend dozens of days during the winter without seeing the sun. I still like their climate better than Madrid's, though.
4.- Logroño is located in the upper Ebro valley, which is a transition zone between the Mediterranean and the Oceanic climates, with some "continental" influence from the Northern Meseta. This means that in a 50 km radius you get a great diversity of landscapes, from rainforests to deserts. I'm sure you noted that when driving northbound along the N-111 :). For someone like me, who enjoys mountain biking and hiking, this is a great advantage.
5.- Another thing I like is that the kind of tourism we have is... let's say more civilised than the one you get on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Mostly pilgrims and wine lovers. The latter are few, but educated and spend more money.
6.- A con about living here is that people are LOUD. Yes, friendly but very LOUD. Sometimes I'm watching TV with the windows closed but I still hear the chatter from the street. It's also true that I live in a 2nd floor some 100 m away from the area where the bars are, but...
7.- There aren't many historical monuments or buildings compared to the rest of Spain. We always say that this is a pleasant city to live, but not a great city to visit.
I'm probably being too "localistic" (?) but if I had to move to another Spanish city, my first choices would be Vitoria, Pamplona and Burgos. I like their size, their climate and the fact that they have a good amount of industry (I'm an engineer). I like NW Spain too, but I find too decadent, they had a decent industry in the past but now they're downhill from an economic and demographic point of view. SW Spain is too hot and -let's say- "culturally different" from what I'm used to, SE Spain too crowded with tourists, NE Spain well... Catalonia's political situation...; Central Spain is too far away from the coast.
Obviously it all depends on each one's personal circumstances and preferences. As a Spaniard I'll always see more cultural differences between Spanish regions (it's not just about languages, believe me).
good points of view, i would like it there im sure as im more of the tourist that you mention. i like your points about the weather, very informative, i find that most people in the north are loud and to me that seems like they are having fun, i have a friend from san sebastian and he goes to logroño a fair bit, i suppose that's the reverse of going to the beach. i myself live about 45 mins from the sea but your right, we don't make a point of going that often. i think ill make note to visit next year, perhaps i could tie that in with a trip to treviño? the idea of an enclave land locked within an enclave so to speak appeals to me.
@@johnnienewt I'm glad my comment was useful to you. If you like history, Treviño is filled with little Romanesque Churches (10th-12th centuries) and caves that were used by eremites. Other than that, there's not much to see, apart from dozens of housing developments inhabited by people from Vitoria because it's cheaper to live in rural Burgos than in the Basque capital (especially with a Basque wage). I'm not saying it's an ugly place, but if it wasn't an exclave it wouldn't be anything special.

A quick suggestion, I think I'll be way more beneficial when you are walking in the street to have your camera showing the surroundings and not your face. Don't get me wrong 😂 we all like to see you but this way we also see more of Spain. The only issue is you need a mic for this way if recoding to get a decent sound quality. Thanks!
The great thing about this city is that you can go walking 🚶everywhere. Rents are not too high. Buying a property is rather 👌! I lived in the US and Norway and now for 6 years in Logroño. I bought a property and having a great life! Salaries and jobs are ok in comparison with the cost of life.

I am from Logroño, I moved to London in 2007 but I’ve been travelling back for holiday at least four times a year. I do love my city very much and although I’ve family all over Spain, I believe Logroño to be the best city. Cozy, tasty and dreamy. Only feedback it would have been nice to see more shots of the city.

About a month ago, we biked to Logrono as part of the Ruta Francesa of the Camino de Santiago. I could not keep up with my husband and asked if I could take the bike on the train and the train employees said no. So I had to surrender the bike in Logroo and that effectively ended the biking portion of my camino. But, we agree with you. We loved biking into and around Logrono. My husband biked out of the city too as he continued his camino en bici. I toured Franco Espanola bodega and did a tasting. The restaurants we ate at were fantastic and calle Laurel was packed with interesting tapas places. I had a Rioja slushie! We ran along the river. The hotel we stayed at seemed to be a converted midevil palace. We absolutely loved Logrono!

One plus for Logroño is the high level / scores their public schools have, which is a must for people with children or at least representative of the city's population.
Yes Logroño is a very interesting city to visit and living.
Logroño is the second best city in Spain, after Gijón :)

Hello Stuart! I have lived in Logroño for many years and I never felt isolated. The transport system to other cities for those who do not have a car is very good. We are 45m from Pamplona or Vitoria, 1h30m from Bilbao, Burgos, Soria, 1h45m from Zaragoza, 4 hours from Madrid. 2h30m from the French border. Anyway, where is the isolation?

I've been to Haro many times and each time intend to go to Logrono but never quite made it ! Would love to visit one day.
two thumbs up for Wine Fandango!! Very livable city for sure. Burgos nearby is nice too, but isolated as well (perhaps more so)
The problem with Burgos is how cold it is in winter and how long winters are, I'm from a small city nearby, which is also cold, but Burgos is always a few degrees lower and more windy. I prefer León, plus the tapeo in León is great.
Burgos, yes, I've been poring over some options (for Stuart) but that is certainly one of them.
Check out Elche and Cartagena.
Elche is extremely central placed and great climate.
Cartagena is stunning and is a harbour. Both is close to nature!
Both cities is cheap to live ,but full opportunities 👍

Logroño , La Rioja es una zona bisagra, mezcla de lo Castellano, Navarro y Vasco. Siempre desde el s.XI fue Castilla, pero con la democracia se transformó en una Autonomía. Vitoria, Pamplona, Soria son las capitales más próximas, cada una de una Región, Lander , Autonomía.

Hi, teacher, I've recently become aware by one of your videos you're thinking about moving out, so here is my suggestion. I'd highly recommend you come over here to Burgos, which is both my birthplace and where I currently live. You won't regret It. It's a medium-sized city un northern Spain with all the facilities and amenities one might need to live comfortably and at a very good price, compared to the huge cost of living over there in Madrid. I'd like you to come over and have a look and perhaps release a TH-cam video on my beautiful city as well.

My Basque Grandparents moved to America from Bilbao and Guernica and I am finally traveling to Northern Spain to explore all I have read about. I wanted to know if there are many walking tours of Logrono in English that might cover some of the historical events that took place, Basque witch trials, near by the battle of Najera, King Peter o Castile vs his half Brother Henry and of course the wine tours.
Any thoughts or suggestions of companies to investigate would be most helpful.

La Rioja is one of the best wine producing areas in the world (very famous for having top world quality second to none), but the biggest production area in the whole world is Castilla la Mancha, mate the whole world is not something easily achievable.
BTW show tapas areas at it's peak hour not when empty.

The "best" place to eat should be healthiest place to eat (likewise the best place to sleep should the place ni which your sleep could be most restorative). Therefore, that place would be the one with greatest offer of fruits and vegetables (preferentially fresh), legumes, tubers, roots, seeds, nuts, and whole grains in the market, and most if not all of those foods at affordable prices. Based on such criterion, Alaska, northern Siberia or Greenland would be some of the worst places to eat on earth, and Valencia, one of the best ones, at least within Spain. The same goes for the "best" place to drink. Drinking alcoholic beverages (including wine) isn't healthy. Therefore, the offer of alcoholic beverages in each place should be taken out of the equation and instead compare those drinks that may be considered healthy (such as water, gazpacho, tea, etc.).
Your opinions are certainly yours. You have no right to tell others what should be "best" to them. I have no desire whatsoever to meet you anywhere in the world to enjoy a shared experience. You go enjoy your bland vegan life with other boring people like yourself. Don't try to push your opinions on me or anyone else. And, for the record, wine, in moderation, has been proven to be very healthy. Take your lifestyle to your secluded hut and enjoy your fresh legumes, tubers and mostly your nuts, wash them down with some filtered water and let the rest of us live as we choose!
