Pansexuality + Bisexuality: What's The Difference!?

- Find out why the labels are so similar and what they've meant throughout history. 🦎🤓
TD;LR Both labels now encompass multiple genders and evolved over time as our understanding of gender broadened. Often, as we learn more about the world around us, language is adapted. Words are no longer literal, and may be used differently e.g. September isn't the seventh month!
How we identify with labels is personal. As is which one we choose! You may even define it differently. There is no right, or wrong, just what feels best for you.
#lgbt #lgbtq #pansexual #bisexual
To clarify for the people in the comments - the two labels are very similar. Which is why it’s so confusing. They both look like experiencing attraction to people of multiple genders. The main difference is that for many pan people they will say that gender plays no part in their attraction. Or they don’t ‘see’ gender. For many bi people, gender plays a role. HOWEVER the reason history is important is because these definitions have changed over time. And many bi people’s definitions of their label may actually be similar to what pan is now today! So there is overlap!
This did help a lot, but im still confused. Idk what my label is. I understand that it's okay not to try to get there too quickly, but I want to understand what I am.
I’ve heard bi people say gender doesn’t play a role, but it gets confusing when somebody redefines a label only for themselves and not the general meaning in the world, so where do labels lose their meaning?
then what is omni, Vanessa? 😑😑😑😑😑
I'm bi, and I approved this message! 💗💜💙

Pansexuality can be understood as gender-blind, not really caring about gender and finding attraction towards any individual. For omnisexuality, the individual finds attraction to all genders similar to pansexual individuals, but isn’t “gender-blind”.

I am an asexual with romantic attractions falling into one of these two categories
I have asked multiple people, I have consulted the internet, I am *actively living the experience*, and i still have no idea what the difference is
The only difference I can potentially glean from this is "bisexual means certain gendered characteristics appeal to you" and "pansexual means you really do not give a shit"
I am a non-binary gay myself, and quietly wonder just how many more letters will be tacked on to the rainbow flag, as, considering the way it’s going, it looks like the entire alphabet might be shortly conquered.
For then the entire English lexicon will be fruity.
It sucks on both sides. If you're Bisexual, people would say, "Are you sure you're not gay?" or "I think you're just confused." But if you're Pansexual, they would say, "That's not real." or "So basically Bi?"
“What gender are you attracted to?”

I’m pan and all I have to say is that I care about their personality gender doesn’t really matter we’re all human anyway ✨
While my attraction generally lines up as hetero, I am open to all genders. It's more about compatibility to me than gender. I think that lines up with my demisexuality. It's the connection that's important. I'm also starting to wonder if I'm a bit demiromantic, as well.
So basically bi is an umbrella term for multi-gender attraction and pan is a smaller umbrella for all-gender attraction under the bi umbrella?
I find this video helpful! I've been trying to learn more about many different parts of the LGBTQ+ community (even the little known stuff) cause i want to be the safe space in places that don't really accept queer people. And at the same time it helps me learn who I am, As i have learned that I am Heteroflexible and AroAce! ^w^
As a bisexual, I feel like pansexual is just our crazy twin lol.
Although bi in its literal form ment two I always saw it as two or more as is also the case with bilingual, and pan meaning all, so if you did not like all genders, but you liked more than two then you are bi, burt if you are atracted to all the it could go either way depending on which colours you fit best. Like implied by other comments
In my cluntry many people say this:
Pan is when you love anyone but mostly for their personality
Bisexual is when you love anyone but mostly for their sexual features.
Im myself am either bisexual or pan or both but I think we should somehow once and all decide what both stands for so it makea it easier to choose a sexuality and be less confused and it would also help syraight people respect the terms if they also knew what they actually meant.
Wow, that's biphobic as fuck.
im sorry what 😭😭😭
pan is the whole "attracted to personality" bs, and bi is just... wtf
for me it’s whichever colors I like on the given day (feeling both colors are chill right now for example)
Not a huge difference between the terms nowadays, use whatever one you vibe with more, my friend told me he's pan because "the flag looks better" can't argue with that logic, even if I prefer the bi flag
Not sure if this is a controversial question but is it possible that when someone is bi it means they’re only attracted to men and women, but if they are pan they are attracted to all genders (non-binary, trans, etc.)?
I still don't understand if I'm bisexual or pansexual😭😭
I would say for me as a bisexual, I would think that bisexuality would be an attraction to both people that have attributes that could be called more feminine and attributes that could be called more masculine. And for pansexuality, I think of it as liking people regardless of looks / regardless if they are more feminine or more masculine. I'm still looking and trying to expand my knowledge as of how I can define them better, so if anyone can, please do! I'm trying to expand my knowledge on this as I know I am bisexual, I know I'm attracted to more than one gender, but I'm still trying to find a better way to define it.
Thank you Queer Chameleon, this has really helped me as a person questioning their sexuality. Now I can pretty firmlt say I am Pansexual, and not debate back and forth about Bi or Pan. Thanks.

Some people look better in dark blue, purple and pink... some people can rock the pastel pink blue and yellow!" 😅 To this day it's probably the best argument I've heard on the matter!
@goatsfluffy8254 I think that was the whole point of the video. There really isn't an answer to the question, "What is the difference between bi and pan?" Because the collective understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity continues to grow and change over time.
I was confused by it as well but someone used a great example for the difference of pansexuals and bisexuals. They used ice cream as there example, bisexuals like all kinds of ice cream but for different reasons and they also might favor one over the other, pansexuals like all kinds of ice cream as well but they like them all the same there isn’t any they favor the most.

@@_..Random_Raven.._ Even in the 1990s, many of us who identified as bi were very aware of and attracted to trans men and women. The nonbinary identity was not available to me back then, but I adopted it years later, and it helped me make sense of a lot of experiences I hadn't understood until then. Our bi magazine in the 90's was called "Anything That Moves," both making fun of stereotypes about bisexual people and acknowledging the breadth of our attractions.

@@goatsfluffy8254, 1: Arent the same thing. As the video explains, Bisexuality is where you have a sexual/non-sexual/other kind of attraction to more than one gender, the kind of people that fit under that umbrella are cisgender females, cisgender males, trans women, trans men, and non binary people. Pansexual on the other hand are supposed to show a person that is fine with anyone and everyone, they can be either sexually/non-sexually/other attracted to different genders or labels, it all comes down to what they like in that specific other/s.
2: The point of them is to show the differences in everyone and their individual feelings, and in a way have our own community of others who are stuck in the same situation as them to help them learn more; and it can even happen to those with opposite or different types of labels!!

I'm bi and my best friend is pan. I've told them the same stuff that was said in this video multiple times. But recently i heard them tell one of our straight friends that "bisexual means attraction to men and women." It just kinda upsets me :/
I was constantly told in high school that bisexual meant attraction to two genders (either the binary genders, or a binary and non-binary gender). I then heard someone use it to mean "attraction to genders like my own and different from my own" and then it made more sense why some people use bisexuality and pansexuality interchangeably.
I prefer using pansexual for myself because gender has nothing to do with who I'm attracted to (gender expression has some factor but it's mostly a personality thing) but there's some older people I met who use the bi label when people from the outside might consider them pansexual. I know from experience that a lot of transphobes and interphobes might use the bi label because they feel pansexuality is meant for those identities but not bisexual (which harms not only gender minorities but also pansexuals and bisexuals; in fact when I've told the story of that experience a lot of bisexuals who heard it felt attacked, even though the point of the story was to say someone who happened to identify as bi invalidated my identity and used his identity to explain why). Sorry to hear your friend hasn't been as open minded about what you have to say about why you use your label.
Well it can mean "to men and women" for them and that is also fine. Not all bi people go for full spec. It can be different for you and that also is fine. The label is defined by who does wear it.
@@FactionalSky this!! straight, gay, and bi can all include nonbinary people, but don't necessarily _have_ to, the wearer of the label gets to decide what it means to them. whereas pan inherently means attraction to all genders.

Me too...I think...still not sure yet tbh
I guess I prefer not to have a label for myself but if I generally go by bisexual
Kinda similar for me. I don’t say I’m pan, I fully identify as bi, even though usual pan definitions describe my experience more truly, I just don’t care about it that much, but care more about other things. I feel like the best thing “pan” label accomplishes is validation, just like other bi-umbrella labels (omnisexual, polysexual, etc.), by being more clearly defined and specific to a person, and for a lot of people that validation is really important, feels really good fitting in a certain label nicely, helps with acceptance and socialization. For me tho, other things are more important. I feel pretty comfortable with myself, so I prioritize less confusion (just as you described - “oh ok got you”) and more visibility. I’m a huge fighter against bi invisibility both from straight and lgbt people, so for me “bi” is like a big third side in this social conflict (this side obviously includes all our bi-umbrella siblings). Like, my sentiment is “let’s get people to at least know that bisexuals exist at all, and then we can discuss all the cool dlcs”. Another point is familiarity. Unfortunately, people are less willing to listen to you if you describe yourself as something unfamiliar (“you stupid kids/cringe zoomers came up with a million genders!”). Gradual exposure is what works best for me so far in my endeavors.
@@MisterIncog Yeah, I act in a similar way, if i'm talking to someone who is knowledgeable in gender and sexuality, I describe myself as pan-demisexual. As a bisexual, here's how I define it for me: attraction to all/multiple genders, with a preference for certain ones.
I also use it as a general label for myself :3
My view on being bisexual is liking at least two genders. This can mean many, but not always all. As a pansexual, I view pans as liking anyone regardless of their gender. All that matters is their looks and personality.
For example, one time I had a crush on this person that I didn’t know very well and I believed they were a girl because of their aesthetic and hairstyle. I found out that he was a trans man and used he/him pronouns . Hearing this I just thought “oh I didn’t know that” but that didn’t change the way I saw him.
I don't really care about gender much, so I used to think I was bisexual. Then I thought I was pansexual. Then I thought I might be bisexual again. Then I realized I was demisexual and that's why I had such a hard time figuring out exactly who I was attracted to.
I identify as pan to make sure that everyone knows that trans people are included and all
Some people going off with "i'M oNlY aTtRaCtEd To \(cis/trans) pEoPlE."
No. The subconscious has no concept of gender and whatnot. It only cares about signal processing.
So if input satisfies some threshold, you get lust. Or romance. Or, _whatever._
Willingness to engage on those feelings, well, that CAN be controlled.

Pan flag- pink, yellow, and blue

I am nonbinary and bisexual. I started identifying as bisexual in 1992 and nonbinary in 2022. I continue to call myself bisexual despite not caring that much about gender, because that is the term with which I am most familiar and the one that most non-bi people recognize.

Im bi and my younger brother is pan. For our understanding, i get attracted to different genders for different reasons. What i find attractive in a man wont necessarily be the same thing i find attractive in a woman, neither will it be what i find attracrive in a non-binary person. Im currently in a relationship with both a man, and a non-binary person (yes everyone knows, consents and agrees, no cheating whatsoever.). My younger brother however finds the same things attractive across all genders possible, he doesn't not care about gender, but it doesn't have as much impact on his attraction to others as gender has impact on my attraction to others.
And for extra reference, my fraternal twin is gay, and our younger sister (middle child) is Asexual, likely demi-romantic too, and so far she defines it with a base of heterosexuality.

Oh my goodness, that's a funny version of that joke! I might use that with my pan boyfriend the next time i could, lol. He absolutely loves such jokes.
As someone who considers themselves an ally, let me be straight with you (dad jokes, I have them). All these different terms are confusing as hell, and in many if not most cases are unnecessary to explain how you see yourself as interested in others. Excessive reliance on one of the SEVERAL terms used to describe sexuality these days do little more then confuse those of us who... well, why should we care who you spend your nights with as long as you're happy?
Almost everything I read about different sexual orientations (NOT gender orientations, that's a WHOLE other subject) can be boiled down to four categories that we've been using for decades, if not far longer; straight, gay, bi, or no thank you.
Asexual? Not interested. Autosexual? Basically gay for yourself. Demisexual? We called that being a romantic in my day (good thing I look good in grey and black, and purple's my fav color!) Pan is just Bi but you don't care if the organs match the gender. Queer? The definition literally calls it a catch-all term for not straight; I recognize that one, but using a term I was raised to believe was an insult seems...bad.
None of the above terms are really necessary in order for someone to understand you. At the end of the day, a woman isn't likely to walk up to you in the bar and ask "Excuse me, are you gynosexual?" She's going to take in how you present, and ask to buy you a drink if she's into you. I've worked with several bi people, and I no one ever asked them "Are you bisexual, pansexual, or skoliosexual." In the real world, people either don't care, or they care WAY too much.
I was searching for a comment like this: when I was a kid you were either straight or gay, only as a young teenager did I learn about bisexual and asexual. These 4 main categories fit, no matter who you were or where you’re from you were one of these 4 … now there are more than 80 labels for sexuality … EIGHTY! Honestly, and I know I’m going to get sh*t for this, for me personally? I think the word pansexual only became a thing because someone, somewhere in the world decided being bisexual was too plain a label of a label for them. And me? I’m happy to be a boring as hell straight woman, non of that cis stuff, if I’m feeling fancy I say I’m hetero, but that’s it.
Thanks 👍🏻
I really can’t tell if I’m bisexual or pansexual, but I think I’m more bi
I’m still a bit confused as to whether I’m bi or pan but no matter what I am I’m leaning a bit more on the bi side because I’ve only met one trans in my life and I never really had any romantic feelings towards them
I'm bi and I've had romantic feelings towards a trans person. Bi can include attraction to trans people, it doesn't mean having attraction only for cis men and women. The bi and pan definitions today are very similar and they do overlap on some aspects. If you find yourself in the overlapping area (like myself), I guess it's a matter of which label you identify most/makes you feel more comfortable. I identify as bi because I came across it first, and I feel the definition still fits, but if someone asks me if I'm pan, I'll answer "probably, yeah".
As was told both labels can mean about the same for individual people. But if you want to go by the gender definition you "just" have to find out if genders do matter for you. If yes it might be bi. If no it might be pan. But you also can use both labels or none at all. You also could use omni. It's about You not about labels. They just are there to express yourself if you want to. The important thing is: just be who you are and do your thing. :)
Bisexuality is not defined by whether you're attracted to trans people. You also met only one who you knew to be a trans person.

I have now decided that I am bisexual and trans. It’s pretty self explanatory with my pfp but thank you for being supportive of all people in this channel!
Bisexual and Pansexual are synonyms, but whatever label you pick to describe your attraction to both/any genders is your choice. It’s just like how a homosexual women could use the label gay or lesbian. Let’s stop the fighting over these two labels y’all. Happy pride month! ❤️
I'm pansexual, and I get really annoyed when people say they're the same thing, because they aren't. I think this video is pretty good at explaining the history and differences.
Their definitions were overlapping before pansexual was re-defined as an orientation.
Love to see this.
Over the past decade or so I’ve been on the fence as to whether I consider myself bi or pan; I’m also Demi and for some reason I thought that Demi and Pan were mutually exclusive sexualities (since Pan meant potentially attracted to anyone regardless of gender and Demi meant being attracted to a person’s character before their bodies)
It wasn’t until I asked myself what I preferred that I realised that, if they have the right heart for me, I wasn’t bothered what they’re physical body looked like, I figured out that Pan/Demi was the best for me.
Love all my bi and pan fam here!
As someone who is bi and having to deal with people saying I should label myself pan instead because it means I was transphobic if I didn't. This video helped a lot. Thank you.
I’m pansexual and love telling ppl I’m 1,3 gay
I’m bisexual ❤ also thank you for explaining so other people will know❤❤❤❤😊

Ill be honest, I just picked the one with the flag I thought was prettier lol😅 (Pansexual, i like bright things)

Also fine. :D
Can you make a difference on Omnisexual and panasexual?
Omnisexuality means to be attracted to all genders as gender would actually play a role so you would have a preference like me! :D
While Pansexuality means you are attracted to all genders but gender doesnt actually play a role so theres no preference in terms of gender its soley on the person themselves (excluding gender ofc)
@@goatsfluffy8254 lol
The introduction gives me strong Good Advice Cupcake vibes
I feel like pansexuality is attraction to people and you don’t care about gender but with bisexuality it’s like you kinda care about gender but you like multiple genders if that makes sense. tell me if you think im wrong 💖
Don't forget that bisexual is an umbrella term under which both pansexual and omnisexual exist, and of course an identity in itself. Lets stop framing the discussion "bi or pan". Pan *is* bi.
not neccesarily, bc the thing about labels is that people define their own labels differently, you can't define someone else's label for them: i am pan, and i do not identify as bi (altho some pan folk may identify as bi too) but please don't assume the definitions of someone's label - just ask! :)
@@wisequail7600 It’s just that’s the official understanding. I would never assume an individual’s identity. I am omni, which I much prefer to bi, but sometimes it’s easier just to say bi since that’s what everyone knows. Omni is always left out of this discussion and sometimes I get annoyed about that. It’s always bi v pan, which is wrong and my original point that this needs to be reframed for they are different identities.
@@loopyfrog hmm i understand your point - i do think we should reframe the "bi or pan" discussion as "similarities and differences btwn 3 different identities" (omni included)
however, i just wanted to make sure you weren't assuming that ALL pan folk also identify as bi (cuz well, not all of us do)
thank you for the thoughtful consideration tho!! ☺️💖💖🌈🦄
@@wisequail7600 oh yes I got you! Thanks for clarifying that 🙂
@@loopyfrog yea ofc!! thank you for clarifying as well 🥰🏳️🌈💖
Pansexual likes pans
Bisexual likes biceps
Ok so just to recap bi mean you sort of choose who you like, like you can like just non-binary and girls, but pans means like EVERYONE
Edit: got it wrong. Now I know:3
Bi usually means you have a preference. Or you only like people identifying as certain genders. Pan is having no preference for certain genders and means you like anyone you like regardless of gender.
@@Stolasthegaybirdthank you cause I was confused :)
No.
Bi: attraction to gender similar or different to oneself/attraction to two or more genders (emphasis on more, because bi isn’t necessarily limited to two.) Bi is a general term. Some bi people have a preference, some don’t. Some bi people are attracted to all genders, and some aren’t. Some bi people are attracted to both men and women, and some aren’t. Some nonbinary bi people are only attracted to other nonbinary (this is a nblnb term btw) people but consider some nonbinary genders as genders differently from themselves. (Nonbinary itself is umbrella term btw.)
Pan: attraction to all genders regardless of gender, meaning gender isn’t a factor in their attraction. Keep in mind this doesn’t always mean lack of preference, just that gender isn’t a factor in the attraction itself, which can mean different things to different people. Pan is a microlabel and more specific than bi, but neither label contradicts the other.
Both attractions, as well as monoseuxal attractions, may include nonbinary people. And, bi does not necessarily mean attraction to both men and women or binary genders at all.
@@Stolasthegaybird I figured that out after I left this comment thanks

🌈 Q💥
Bi does mean two, but those two aren't men and women, theyre "same" and "other/different", just like the pink and blue in the flag, that mean "same" and "other/different". Both homo (same) and hetero (other/different)
But there is only one other/different gender. If you’re female, then the other/different one is male. If you’re male, then the other/different one is female. So bi = 2 = one’s own and the other/male and female.
@@AnthonyBSusan I try to be polite but you obviously didn’t watch anything on this channel
@@TheDinoNerd I did. That's how I was able to refute this. What was said in the video is incorrect.
Stating that there's only two genders is still invalidating genderneutral people so you're sort of coming here to shame on it.
@@AnthonyBSusan There are more than two genders-
So…what is omni???
Also 0:33 ah hell nah Oedipus Freud coined the term Pansexual ah hell nah 😭
I still don’t get the difference though…
But I suppose it doesn’t really matter the exact terms as long as it helps people understand themselves. I’m a lesbian myself but I haven’t figured out if I’m also asexual or just too young to experience that kind of sexual attraction.
whenever someone asks me why I identify as bi instead of pans, I just say bi means two and bisexual means two or more and pansexual means it doesn’t matter
But for pansexuality, sometimes it DOES matter
Thanks Queer Chameleon this video helped so much and now I know I’m ✨PANSEXUAL✨🩷💛💙
Congrats!!!!
For me bi means 2. But It doesn't have to be girl/boy it could be girl/Tran fem or boy/femboy or any of the combos. Just 2 of them.
For me pan means if u are will to Accept me and love me for me then I am willing do the same. What's inside someone pants or not in someone pants means nothing to me. I want to get to know and love the person inside.
I am pansexual. And love is love. The first thing I look for isn't in your pants.
then what about biromantic asexuals? what are they for?
..or even just bisexuals in general? they aren’t all looking for what’s in your pants.
main takeaway from this video: shit im pansexual that explains a lot
Same experience here!
Bi= I love you before and after your transition
Pan= I love you regardless of your transition
WTF
To further explain, there is a difference between the two.
Bisexuality refers to people attracted to multiple genders. This can be evenly split, or divided between genders, but it simply refers to multiple forms of attraction.
Pansexuality is basically attraction to people regardless of gender. This means gender has no role in their attraction whatsoever.
But there only are two real genders, so it’s all bisexual
Me: Were the Aroace?
Just don't try to insist what someone else means by their own labels, or try to assign them the labels you think they should have.
Judging by my pfp you can guess how this was helpful
TIL, thank you.
Also thank you for knowing Freddie was Bi So many people think he was gay...
These are the definitions im used to
Pansexual - Gender blind, doesn't care abt gender just personality
Bisexual - Usually attracted to only 2 genders (Whether that is Male+Female, Non-Binary+Male, etc. etc.)
And they are biphobic and wrong.
@@lysanamcmillan7972 how? It's just what I was told it was
I like who ever the fuck I want, how many ever I want, and I’m whoever the fuck I want(Pansexual-Polyamorous-Genderfluid, but also transmasc!)
The way I’ve always looked at things, the differences between the two are marginal, but they matter to some people, and that’s okay. The entire point of a label is so people know how they feel is valid, if people feel comfortable with a label it’s doing its job
As an abrosexual, I am sometimes both of them at the same time...
Can you do Abrosexuality and Bisexuality? I'm abro and i just found out that bi people are fluid between girls and boys soo... I'm a bit confused.. Also is being both abro and gender fluid ok (also adding my ambivert a$$)?
I’m so glad that there’s someone to explain the difference because I told my friend I’m pan and they’re like “Oh! That’s like Bi right?”
I identify with both labels, but a bit more with "pansexual". Partly because I'm also on the asexual spectrum and the anatomical details rank very low among my criteria. So the "regardless of gender" definition for pansexual feels more fitting. I like the concept of "bisexual" being the umbrella term, while pan-, poly- or omnisexual are more specific labels within that category.
I'm bisexual, and frankly I always thought that yeah its for both, but nowadays, I just use our flag. Pink for women, Blue for men, and Purple for everyone in between.
Well... In the last year (2023) i only se myself as bisexual, but today (2024) i identify myself as pansexual
