Villeneuve and Kubica in 2006 at BMW . Coulthard and Mansell in 1994 for Williams. Verstappen/Lehto/Verstappen/Herbert in 1994 for Benetton, Magnussen and Verstappen in 1998 for Stewart (Jan and Jos, not Kevin and Max) Frentzen and Sato in 2001 for Jordan. Lots more but these stand out for me.

    • @Myrvold
      @Myrvold 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sato didn't race for Jordan in 01. But in 02, and raced the last race for BAR in 03. However Frentzen was fired from Jordan mid 01, being replaced by Zonta for a race, then Alesi joined in, while Frentzen took the spot Alesi left vacant at Prost.
01 had a bit more fun as well. As Prost had signed Gaston Mazzacane for his money, but also with a performance clause, so Mazzacane was fired after four races. 4 races was all Luciano Burti got for Jaguar as well. Burti was replaced by de la Rosa at Jaguar, while Burti took Mazzacane's place at Prost (remember, it had just been 4 races in the season, and both Burti&Mazzacane had their first races for the teams they raced for). To make matters even more complicated, de la Rosa was initially a Prost test-driver!
Later in the season, Alex Yoong would replace Tarso Marques at Minardi. Burti crashed heavily at Spa and was ruled out for rest of the year with Tomas Enge replacing him at Prost, who then ended the season using 5 different drivers in the races, while the two test-drivers they had, who also had F1 experience didn't get to race.

This could easily be the Briatore Bunch - as well as the Trulli-Villeneuve and Moreno-Schumacher swaps, there's Piquet jr-Grosjean in 2009 at Renault and Johnny Herbert twice!
Firstly being replaced by Emanuele Pirro in 1989 but then coming back to Benetton in 1994 to replace Jos Verstappen - father of Max.
As has been mentioned by others in this thread, dropping Nelson Piquet jr eventually lead to Flavio's downfall - so at least some good came of that one.

Lehto in and out, Jos Verstappen in and out and Johnny Herbert in, Benetton 1994. A real case of musical chairs this one. JJ Lehto was hired by Benetton as the second driver in 1994 to Michael Schumacher. He had put in impressive performances in uncompetitive machinery, particularly Imola 1991, where in a Dellara, he qualified 16th, but finished 3rd behind only the two Mclarens of Senna and Berger and 1994 was supposed to be his big chance. Unfortunately, it turned into a bit of a nightmare. While preseason testing at Silverstone, trying in vane to match Schumacher's times, he crashed heavily, leaving him unconscious and fractured vertibrae in his neck. This ruled him out for the first two races of 1994, being replaced by Jos Verstappen, who was only in his second season racing in cars after starring in Karting. Verstappen struggled initially, finding the handling of the B194 didn't suit his driving style, he was barely in the top 10, while Schumacher won the first two races of the season and Verstappen had two DNF's. Lehto returned for the third round, the ill-fated race at Imola. Although he appeared to be closer to his team mate than Verstappen initially, qualifying 5th on the grid, he stalled at the start, and was hit from behind by the Lotus of Pedro Lamy. Lehto never really recovered from there. In Monaco, he was only 14th on the grid while Schumacher took pole position for the first time in his career, going on to win the race easily with Lehto out of the points in 7th, running 2 laps down on Schumacher at one point. He was on track for a great result in Spain, qualifying 4th, and was in sight of good points when his B194 suffered an engine failure, Schumacher finished 2nd despite running 2/3 of the race stuck in 5th gear. In Canada, Lehto was again underwhelming, qualified 20th with Schumacher fastest, and barely squeaked a points finish after Christian Fittipaldi was excluded for being underweight. From the French Grand Prix onwards, Verstappen was back in the car, but he wasn't much better initially, not scoring points until his podium finish in Hungary, but not before his most most famous moment, having his car burst into flames in a pit stop at Hockenheim.
Verstappen picked up a second podium after Schumacher was disqualified from victory in Spa, and Lehto made a brief return filling in for the Championship Leader, though at Monza and Estoril, neither of them could get anywhere near the levels of performance Schumacher was getting, the only points scored in the races Schumacher was banned was Verstappen getting 5th at Estoril. Estoril was the final time Lehto would race in the car before filling in at Sauber for the final 2 races in place of the retiring De Cesaris. The following round at Jerez was the last time Verstappen would be in the car, he spun out of that race, while Schumacher won. For Japan and Australia, Johnny Herbert, was drafted in (he had a contract for 1995 as well), but retired from both of them (he aquaplaned off in Japan and had gearbox problems in Australia). This merry-go-round of drivers, none of them being able to push Schumacher harder, or more importantly able to score good points when Schumacher couldn't. This, in my view, cost Benetton the constructors championship in 1994

Hartley coming in to replace Sainz and Kvyat coming back to the team to replace Gasly, the driver who replaced him originally, as Pierre was doing races in Japan that meant he would miss a few rounds. Only for Pierre to then replace Kvyat once again lol

I am a JV fan, but that swap made no sense. The Renault that year was notoriously difficult to drive and suited Fernando more than anyone else (and even he had his woes), plus factor in that JV had been out of action for the best part of the year and had already signed for Sauber in 2005. Maybe sacking Trulli was unavoidable (well Flavio was in charge and we all know how he works) but it made no sense to bring in JV as surely there was a reserve driver more familiar with the car. It also made no sense for JV other than getting used to F1 machinary again. I do think JV took the drive because he wanted to knock BAR off their place in the championship that year. He may have still held a grudge.

The 2005 Red Bull driver swaps are not too far off what Ligier did in 1995 with Martin Brundle and Aguri Suzuki.
Also, whenever Suzuki raced, Brundle would have his first forays in the commentary box with Murray Walker.

I think the "craziest" or at least smartest one happened in 2002.
Arrows went bankrupt, which left Enrique Bernoldi and Heinz-Harald Frentzen without a drive after the German GP. Fast Forward some races, and the second to last race of the season, the 2002 US GP. Felipe Massa had picked up one of the first (if not the first) grid penalties due to something happening the race before. But as this was new, the rules weren't written clearly or very good. It simply stated that Felipe Massa had a "10 place grid penalty at the next event".
Sauber being smart, realized that it said "next event" and not "the drivers next event". So they contacted their old driver Frentzen, and drafted him in for the US GP, as he wouldn't have a grid penalty, and then getting Massa back in the seat for the last race of the season. Massa effectively having served his penalty while being benched.
Needless to say, the rules was clarified not long after.

There were so many mid-season driver swaps, you could easily make one of these videos for each decade... I mean, in the early 90's alone, there were so many. Just look at Jordan in '93: Rubens Barrichello had five different teammates over the course of that season! During that season, Häkkinen replacing Andretti at McLaren after 13 races turned out to be quite important, too. He immediately outqualified his teammate, a certain Ayrton Senna, who had dominated Andretti by one to two seconds in each qualifying before that.

Albon was ahead until Kvyat took a gamble on tyres- one that probably wouldn’t have happened if he were closer to the front, and thus had more to lose if the gamble didn’t pay off.
Then Gasly gave Albon a puncture, and completely ruined his race

They struggled to drive cars that were effectively built for Max Verstappen since Ricciado’s sudden switch to Renault in 2019, Red Bull kinda need to balance out the two drivers and also Adrian Newey needs to get his hat together.

There is no clear enough lack of pace to justify replacing Bottas mid season. (Atleast so far.) He’s been extremely unlucky but they still kind of need him to help secure both championships this year. Russel’s skills are undoubtedly good but the dynamic between him and Hamilton is unknown as well as how he handles the pressure of delivering top tier performance from race to race in a team where he’d likely be a second driver.
