This song was there at the founding of the "Brat Pack" - it was prominent in "The Breakfast Club", one of the Brat Pack early hit movies. If you've seen the movie, you will think of them and the movie every time you hear this song...

It should be noted that when they first released this song, they were not big fans of it, because a) they did not write it and b) it was not representative of the kind of music they were making at the time. It would seem over the years they've come to embrace it, considering that you're playing it directly from their TH-cam channel. At the time, they had a point as this was not really the kind of music they were producing (just listen to "Someone Somewhere (in Summertime) or "Promised You a Miracle" for an idea of their sound in the early to mid 1980s). Another bit of trivia is that Simple Mind's lead singer, Jim Kerr, was married to Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) from 1984-1990.

People stumble across these reaction channels because they spot their favorite songs and enjoy seeing someone discover it for the first time.
This song (especially extended 12” version) is amazing but is helped by the context of the movie it came from and the generational impact it had. No one had made a movie with that pov before and the song summarized that movie perfectly.
The song was originally written for the movie and shopped around to Billy Idol first and then Simple Minds who at first did not want to do music that was not their own. It’s a story worth looking up, thankfully they embraced it and close their shows with it on tour now.

It's been so long since I first saw this I forgot about the video for this song.
This song and the Colonel Boogey Whistling imitated from Bridge over the River Kwaii are the music I can remember from the Breakfast Club.
Interestingly this is the goal song for our local hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks. :)

The best sound from these guys comes from their live double album "in the city of lights" (that is, Paris). To this day, their live sound (enveloping, full of complexity and layers...and loud as hell) is hardly believable. Highly recommended.

Billy said in an interview that everyone would think he sang this song and how much they liked it so he decided to cover it on his greatest hits album. Should also do shock to the system by lord of the lost they covered this which was originally Billy Idols song.

The story behind the song is crazy. Simple Minds really didn't like it for a long time. In the mid-80s they had been building up a fanbase slowly over multiple albums, honing their craft, waiting for a breakthrough. All that was missing was one big hit. At the time, two movie producers were creating "The Breakfast Club" and the guy in charge of the music wrote a song in the style of the Simple Minds for the movie and wanted them to play it. They refused initially but eventually agreed to do it. So they recorded it and went on to finish their own album, on which the song did not appear. When both the movie and the album came out, the song, which was of course "Don't you", became a big hit instantly, surpassing their own biggest hit "Alive and Kicking" from their '85 album "Once Upon a Time". They were quite pissed.

Billy idol did a version
"The Breakfast Club" Director John Hughes offered this producer Keith Forsey penned song to Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol before Simple Minds, and Simple Minds almost turned it down too as vocalist Jim Kerr wasn't thrilled with the lyrics. The song appeared on the movie soundtrack but not on Simple Minds next LP. (Although IIRC it has since appeared on greatest hits packages.) One of the all-time cover band fail tracks as it seems really simple (?!) to play but the song hangs off really quirky and interesting drum and vox performances that few can pull off.

If you liked that one you should (please) check out ‘Pretty in Pink’ by the Psychedelic Furs. Another iconic 80’s song from a brat pack movie. Often thought that the song was written for the movie (same title) and the band lost following as it was commonly thought that they ‘sold out’ for the money; the song was released years before the movie.
