      The astronaut depicted is floating through space, but he's flailing his arms about and thrashing into the vacuum as he tumbles about, almost like his tether to the spacecraft has broken, and he's trying to "swim" through a vacuum to get back to safety. The floating through space that Pink Floyd evokes is more like "yeah, my tether's broken, but this is just AWESOME! I'm floating through space!". No fear, no thrashing about, just AWESOMENESS.

    It's important to not only understand the lyrics but that it's a conversation between a doctor and a patient. That is why there is the contrast in style and voice. The patient is the main character. And then we get to hear and feel the emotions of the patient via the guitar solos which are the heart of the song that the lyrics help set up. A masterclass in song writing, composition, and performance.

    • @islandseeker1260
      @islandseeker1260 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, she totally missed the back-and-forth dialog aspect... we're brought into the world of the patient and privy to their point of view, which is why Gilmour's voice is so strong and clear and the "doctor's" voice is more muffled and subdued like trying to break through a foggy mist.

      @@AB-ku4my _"and it's eventual demolition"_
      FWIW, you do understand that the entire album _is a _*_loop_* right?
      The very end of the last song, on the last album/cd ( _"Outside the Wall";_ Disc 2/Album Side 4 ), bleeds directly into the musical snippet on the opening of the first song of the first album/CD ( _"In the Flesh?";_ Disc 1/Album Side 1 ).
      If you play it in its entirety, in order, on repeat, it will blend seemlessly, from the very end, back to the beginning. This was done intentionally, by the band, to represent that, like the experiences of many addicts, Pink's journey is an unending cycle of desperately trying to cope with and ultimately surmount the Wall, then falling back and succumbing to it's pernicious influences again and again...

    Two things... 1.) "Comfortably Numb" was inspired by Rodger Waters experience prior to a Floyd concert in Philadelphia. Rodger got sick and a doctor had to be called. The doctor gave him a shot as reflected in the lyrics. "I need some information first. Just the basic facts. Can you show we where it hurts." And... "Can you stand up. I believe it's working good. That will keep you going through the show. Come on it's time to go." 2.) If you look closely when the "disco ball " fully opens it reveals the same kind of "lighthouse" styled light as the one that has been next to David Gilmore on stage.

    As a singer, you MUST check out Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky". It starts out with some what I would call muffled rhetorical dialog, and from about the 1 minute mark, a British singer named Clare Torry begins this sort of expressive scat vocal. As with many Pink Floyd songs, this is transformational for the soul. And David Gilmour also has some very good solo work.

    How cool was this concert? I saw it in Foxboro, MA in 1994, unreal audio, video and sensory experience like no other concert by anyone else. But that is how I felt every time I saw them:
    1975 Old Boston Garden - With Roger Waters and they did all of Dark Side of the Moon and did a great live Echoes as the encore.
    1977 Old Boston Garden - Rogers Waters taking control f the band but David Gilmour taking over the concert with some of his best guitar ever in the Animals set, he was giving us chills and was truly inspired, you can hear this on YT. All of Animals and Wish You Were Here.
    1987 Hartford Civic Center - Roger is gone but the 3 remaining members seem refreshed and eager to perform, great show with Gilmour helming them now.
    1994 Foxboro - The Pulse Tour, enough said.
    I also saw David twice solo, 2 Saturdays in a row in the mid 80s, he had Mick Ralphs on 2nd guitar and they had a blast playing together, nice band and mix of Floyd and his first 2 solo album tunes. Lastly, I saw Roger Waters 4 times, first time in the 80s he had Eric Clapton on lead guitar, was fun hearing his takes on their music, he was excellent in his own way for sure. I also saw him do all of Dark Side and The Wall in separate shows.
    All these shows were amongst the best ever for me, Pink Floyd forever! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

    The great gig in the sky, from this same concert may interest you. The song came from their breakthrough album "Dark Side of the Moon" which stayed on the charts for 18 years! The band recorded the instrumental and hired a singer to voice it. They told her it was about someone who gets a fatal medical diagnosis and goes through the stages of denial anger sorrow and acceptance. After hearing it she asked to see the lyrics. They said no words just sing. After warming up she nailed it on the 1st take. She recommended they hire 3 singers for live performances, because it would be too intense for one singer in a live setting, especially if they have to sing more than one song. The original singer was Clare Tory.

    • @TwoWolves
      @TwoWolves ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion the studio version of Great Gig In The Sky was better than any of the live versions. No one did the vocals better than Clare Torry. The live concerts required 2 or 3 vocalists to do what Clare did solo.

  • @JC130676
    @JC130676 ปีที่แล้ว

    5:26 I think there's another reason for the contrasting vocal styles. The song is about David Gilmour's experience when he was injected with a strong tranquilizer just before having to do a show. The first vocals are external: muted and distant, as if you're walking around in a daze of pain and then the medication kicks in. This is also mentioned in the lyrics: "There is no pain, you are receding / A distant ship's smoke on the horizon / You are only coming through in waves / Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying". Then when Gilmour starts singing, that's his own voice and thoughts which he of course hears very clearly. The smooth, flowing style of the second guitar solo further expresses the dreamy and mellow feeling when you're under the influence of a pain killer so strong you're almost disconnected from the world.
    And now that you've heard this masterpiece, you'll understand why Pink Floyd songs aren't just heard - they're _experienced._ There may be a handful of guitarists more technically skilled than Gilmour, but none that are able to express feelings better through their playing. There are five levels of guitar playing: beginner, intermediate, skilled, master, and Gilmour. 😊

I mean, i know i listen to it pretty much all day long, and is usually who I search for when i want to hear real music. Like, who doesn't want to listen to master musicians to get through their day. Just because it's 90% or more of my list doesn't mean I'm obsessed.
    Does it?

  • @substitutebodhisattva

    This has to be said to you younger folks.
    Pink Floyd's mystique came from the fact that they were considered studio wizards. Their albums were the product.
    A concert cannot provide the full effect of a pink Floyd album. In concert, they would do all sorts of gimmicks to try to replace what was missing: big statues of the figures from the album, on cables flying above the stage and stuff.
    They would play electric guitars on stage in the rain if they had to, to finish a show. ( I saw it myself).
    But a concert is not the album, played on a good stereo or through good quality headphones.
    I knew so many people who bought their first hifi stereo to listen to a Pink Floyd album.
    As a classical musician, you should listen to the original recording of The Wall. That was their Masterstroke.

      @@bertvervoort7976 I was lucky enough to have had adults around me at the time who were audiophiles, and I got to experience all the selections of the period put out on tape. Those guys had to do a lot of work to get those reel to reel recordings. It was a full time hobby, but everyone came to their apartments to listen to music. It was a different time.

    Being a teen in the 70's. not saying that I did drugs, but you can imagine why Floyd was called the tripping band or tripping music back then and I don't mean tripping over your feet!!!! Such a relaxing type of music and IF one was to take something that took them out of reality, Pink Floyd was what was playing back then on the stereo.

    In the movie/video "The Wall", the singer ('Pink') is a messed up musician who was smothered emotionally by his Mum......he grew up prone to social alienation, violent tendencies and drug abuse....this song is the story of 'Pink's life and what he must do to function.......

    This song is a part of movie. Without that movie lyrics is quite strange as it is conected with what happens when it plays. And it is a scene when Pink (main character, a musican) OD and manager with doctor try to revive him for incoming show.

    You really should listen to Pink Floyd "The Great Gig in the Sky". I'd recommend starting with the live version but you should also listen to the studio version. It is the only song of theirs that features a female vocalist.

    I saw the Kansas City version of this same concert in 1994, in Arrowhead Stadium, my family and I driving across the state for it. That one song in particular was one of the high points of my life, and for the rest of the decade, I could give myself goosebumps at will, just by thinking of that song. 🕺

    David Gilmore is the one who improves this song constantly, every live version is better than the original and the live version before, his gift is , he makes his guitar talk, Very, very few people can do this.

    • @wendymotogirl
      @wendymotogirl ปีที่แล้ว

      He certainly improves the solos, or at least lengthens them, but in other ways it is not improved at all. you'd think he could think of something better to replace Rogers vocal with other than that lame caterwauling.

    I think the disco ball became a UFO -- if you were in a proper FLOYD state of mind at a live show, you definitely went into outer/inner space with that guitar solo and transforming disco ball
