Simple Minds are one of only a few bands that can play live with such passion and desire which makes audiences remember them for how just incredible they are. Long live Simple Minds.
I live 25 miles from Belfast and this song totally captures the atmosphere of the time.... One of my favourite songs about Belfast and Northern Ireland
Saw them live many times in the 80s. Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, 1986 was the best. One of the best bands live I've ever seen, and Street Fighting Years deserves to be in anyone's top 20 albums of all time.
For me (just turned 58), the Street Fighting Years-tour back in1989 was the best I've ever experienced. I had the chance to enjoy the concert at Frankfurt Festhalle, Germany , which made it to the anchor news on national television. They performed their interpretation of Peter Gabriel's "Biko" what ment to be their last song that evening with it's captivating chorus and the audience - including me - would continue singing those catching lines for, I guess, a quarter of an hour. So Simple Minds themselves stood there totally flabbergasted, applauding the crowd. That was an outstanding experience!
Thank you for posting this great song. The intro is actually a different song called Soul Crying Out which is a great song in its own right and from the same album as Belfast Child (Street Fighting Years). It's only when you get into the actual live footage that Belfast Child begins. The entire album was brilliant (as with most of the albums they did in the 80s).
La vostra intensissima emozione nel sentire i Simple nella "Nostra" Verona (Sono Italiano)... Che meraviglia... Un vero esempio il vostro, di come si gusta, apprezza e senta la musica. Grazie di❤. From Imola Italia Gian Luca🌄🤝🤗
The long intro is the music of "Soul crying out", one of the themes of their album "Street fighting years", one of my favs. Another gem is "This is your land" with an Lou Reed colaboration. I ❤️ SM
With the early stuff by Simple Minds it took me a few listens to beging to hear the lyrics, the vocals were so amazingly musical that I enjoyed it for that at first, then the lyrics took me to some amazing places. This band was leading the pack in creativity in sound.
In the film footage shown during the performance you may have seen a sign saying 'HARLAND +'. The full sign would say 'HARLAND + WOLFF'. This was the company that built the Titanic. I'm sure that the original video for the song was filmed at ( or near ) the Harland & Wolff shipyard.
One of the best underrated bands, in the Eighties, Got to see them live at Gateshead stadium in 1992 on the see then on the See The Lights tour. Which I could go back then again Great bands in that Decade, like Big Country, Tears for Fears, U2, and of course my Fav Simple Minds.
I saw two small venue shows back in the early -mid 80s, and they were mind blowing. Their best song ain't "Don't You Forget About Me"...they had a ton of great records before they caught on overseas...
I saw Simple Minds outside in Slessor Park in Dundee Scotland two years ago and it was ten out of ten, could not fault them, and the gig was sold within hours and you can see why
This is borrowed from a traditional Irish tune. There's a live version of this where Sinead O'Connor sings She walked through the fair before it merges into Belfast Child. It works brilliantly 👌
Another great reaction, started of with "Soul cry out" and then "Belfast Child". Great narrative Suzi, I have listen to this many times but have never really noticed as you describe it, how his voice brings the band in. With Biko and now Belfast Child good to see you are going through some of the Rock Social conscience masterpieces of the 80s. Bravo!!
And last night Simple Minds played at the Sydney Opera House, and this song is a highlight. 35 years after this song was first released, it was just as good. But you have to check out the drummer, Charisse Osei. She was amazing!
Listen to their early work, before „Don’t You“ something like „thirty frames a second“, „I travel“, „live in a day“, „in trance as mission“, „sweat in bullet“, „love song“ or „sons and fascination“
Brilliant stuff, good to see you getting into this, you clearly like your music. Amazing to think it was released as a single - a 6-minute long folk-ballad-cum-rock-song, broken up into different sections a la 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and years later 'Paranoid Android' by Radiohead... and even more amazing that still to this day is Simple Minds only number 1 in the UK. They got a lot of stick for the song, some of it unfairly and maybe some not, but I know this much... their conviction and hearts were 110% in the right place with this song.
That long intro is an entirely different song by them but just the instrumental version used ., prior to the live version of Belfast Child By the way I saw them live this year still rocking out with 40+ years of hits They have just released a brand new album .
This means so much to Glasgow born Jim Kerr lead singer and Charlie Burchill lead guitar as in their home town there was segregation with catholics and protestants going to separate schools and big soccer clubs like rangers and celtic split
You should react to The Locust! Their drummer passed recently and they were one of the most unique, ridiculously talented, underrated and simultaneously one of the most influential bands of the 90s underground music scene, and I think they really deserve more shine in this little section of TH-cam, would suggest the AOTKPTA video for starters
I've never seen this video before. What a masterpiece! A song written for eternity, and for all of those people who think and believe religion is everything. The history of Ulster shows us that religion is nothing but causing pain, violence, and death. For nothing. Was it worth it? NO! May the troubles never come back! Kind regards from Germany to Northern Ireland and to the whole world (and hell yeah, MY homeland was responsible for a LOT of pain and death)!
The peace mission, Clinton Usa, was risky, for artist took a stand, some people Died, This, poem, is about Belfast The children, Cry in war He said, he said Then the world came together For them
Please, please Folks, react to Waterfront from the same concert. I've seen many live versions of Waterfront and Verona is hard to beat (keyboards are exceptional)
Belfast Child was inspired by the 1987 Enniskillen bombing by the IRA of a remembrance day service which killed 11 people. U2 also had a song about this event as well. Loved your reaction, thanks.
Simple Minds charge the least amount of money as the can to get the most people, they make their money by doing interviews, most bands make more money by charging their fans extortionate prices for tickets to their concerts.
It's a rewrite of an old Irish folk song called She Moved Through The Fair, their earlier stuff is a bit more experimental and arguably more interesting.
This is the worst version of this song Ive heard. Try playing the same song with the latecgreat Sinead O'Connor singing. Its much better than this version
Simple Minds are one of only a few bands that can play live with such passion and desire which makes audiences
remember them for how just incredible they are. Long live Simple Minds.
I live 25 miles from Belfast and this song totally captures the atmosphere of the time.... One of my favourite songs about Belfast and Northern Ireland
I watched Simple Minds playing this in Kings Hall, Belfast about 1989, one of the most moving experience of my life
I was in Glasgow for Street Fighting Years Tour.
One of the most underrated Bands in North America. So many Great Albums with so much Amazing Music🙏
Charlie's tone and style is impeccable, Such a haunting sound.🎸👌
While this live performance is outstanding, the original recording is truly haunting, the way Jim Kerr sings it. Gives me goosebumps every time
My late father asked "Who the hell are these guys?" when we watched the vhs tape when we played this back in the late 80s
The music at the beginning is a track called soul crying out.
Simple Minds Live in the City of Lights is a masterpiece start to finish.
One of the best live albums released!
Awesome album
I love and adore the album but a lot of it was post production but still an amazing moment in time.
Owner of the original vinyl ❤❤❤
excellent reaction!! great vid, there's a great one with sinead o'connor as a guest vocal
Simple Minds. Greates live band on earth and still active.
Saw them live many times in the 80s. Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, 1986 was the best. One of the best bands live I've ever seen, and Street Fighting Years deserves to be in anyone's top 20 albums of all time.
Was there on the Saturday.. on the pitch and being a rangers fan it was amazing to be on the pitch
Having many relatives in Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland, this song gives me chills whenever I hear it. Magnificent.
I don't no how old you are but I remember visiting family in Derry in the troubles
Thanks for airing this! I grew up listening to Simple Minds so musically a big part of my life. Very stirring and thought provoking.
Pure genius.
Scotland's finest.
Jim Kerr still has a haunting voice. This is him in is prime. Street Fighting Years is an incredible album.
It's hard for me to believe that some people dislike this album

That's why fans call it the wall of sound...........Amazing!!
The tune is adapted from an old Irish folk song called "She Moved Through The Fair'. Jim has changed the words, of course.
Sparkle in the Rain is one of the best albums, I have listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times.
An awesome song, the energy & passion is intense.
The long intro is the music of "Soul crying out", one of the themes of their album "Street fighting years", one of my favs. Another gem is "This is your land" with an Lou Reed colaboration. I ❤️ SM

Again... a proud Scot listening to this! 🏴🏴 with love to our Northern Irish cousins!

simple minds brilliant as usual. i seen them live twice.
Another great reaction, started of with "Soul cry out" and then "Belfast Child". Simple Minds and U2, so much good stuff available to react to going forward
The kids in the video ('Billy' and 'Mary") represent the two traditions in NI.
Date date myself? Discovered in 1982… just an amazing band kuddos to Trevor Horn who produced the Album version of this title.
Thank you for everything you do to make this old veteran get through the day! Your music is amazing 👏
My number one favorite song. The feeling is amazing. Thanks for your reaction. I feel you!! ❤🤗
love love love Belfast child. Huge fan of Simple Minds.

American is a class simple minds tune
One of their best along with I travel
Two Celtic lands Scotland and Ireland linked like brothers in history, both plagued by the religious divide and all that it brings.
This can only understand people why live'd in Belfast in "those days"!!!!
Proper song and Band
you must watch east at easter from the same gig

The Belfast child moved through the fair
If you listen to the lyrics, it is not only to do with only the North of Ireland but the whole island of Ireland.
They actually have a song called Magic!
Please, please Folks, react to Waterfront from the same concert. I've seen many live versions of Waterfront and Verona is hard to beat (keyboards are exceptional)
