As someone who works with comics in Brazil, I`m shocked that Ariel just mentioned the HQ mix award! It`s really a big national award for comics, but it isn`t known internationally (I think). And for those who are curious: HQ is the abbreviation for História em Quadrinhos, wich means Graphic Novel (or in a more literal translation, stories in little squares).
I miss Book Olds, really liked that part of the podcast. Maybe fun to do something similar with prompts Patreons give? Like: an autumnal book and you both recommend a backlist title for that prompt

I really like the Snotgirl series personally, but not knowing what's going on is pretty much just part of the series. Cool to hear about the new volume! Just finished her biography of Queen Victoria and started listening to the Jane Austen one, can’t wait to tackle the Agatha Christie one as well. Hiya! A note on “lady’s summer” from a person who knows Russian. I think the commenter meant “bab’ye leto” (not sure if it's exactly the same in Ukrainian), except in Russian “baba” is vernacular for a woman, especially a serf woman in the times of the Russian Empire. Now it’s usually a bit offensive to call that someone (for example, a man can be called “baba” it they act ‘unmanly” or something). The phrase “bab’ye leto” never struck me as beautiful, but “lady’s summer” is a different case and has a very nice ring to it!
I picked up this on a whim this week because Raeleen was reading it and it happened to be available at my library. I loved it so much! Now listening to Raeleen I'm like, dang, you're absolutely right 😂😭 crazy how a 4 star read can dwindle after discussing it with others. It's a hard 3 for me now 😅

I finished Jasper Jones, and yeah, it's not worth it. I'm glad you didn't waste your time with finishing it. I'm honestly amazed at how many accolades it has and how much praise it gets. The ending was really poorly done, in my opinion, and there really wasn't even enough of Jasper throughout the story, despite it being about him.
Raeleen if you love Golden boy and books narrated by children you should totally read Dead Girls by the same author. Great book, unhinged child narrator 👌

So, it's not "lady", it's more of a word that depicts an old woman, and is also a bit rude (baba = some old word that now isn't nice). Meaning, babie lato = old summer. Also, the characteristic of babie lato is the threads of spider webs floating in the air!
I think maybe Ariel caught my flu!! I live in Toronto. Nowhere near Halifax. Anyway, I was as sick as a dog with what may have been the flu or possible covid (I am too scared to test - but I have done the vaccinations) and I was coughing, sneezing, Blocked nose, coughing up phlegm, and generally miserable. That was in the second half of August. Most of the symptoms disappeared by the end of August but I have still spent the first 2 weeks of September coughing and it is driving me crazy!! Is ongoing coughing a symptom of "long covid"? Does anyone know? Love this podcast!! Love the podcast graphics as well.
Hi! I get that it is scary, but it's really important to test for covid any time you have symptons! Not only are there antivirals doctors can prescribe for covid, but also testing is important to know if you are still infectious or not, so it is good to test to make sure you are not infecting other people. Also, some people do test positive and are sick for more than two weeks. My advice is test, rest as much as possible (literally just sleep and lay in bed - it has been shown that mental or physical effort while sick increases chances of long covid) and call your doctor. Even if it is us flu and not covid, your doctor and prescribe a another type of antivirals that work for the flu! Hope you feel better soon!
Ariel, you obviously don't have to share every detail with us, but I do hope you and Connor tested for covid. Covid rates in North America are sky high right now!! And it is important to keep testing so you can know when you are no longer infectious (you can have no symptons and still test positive and infect others). However, I'm really glad yiu rested, because that is essential when it comes to prevent long covid. Anyway, I'm so glad you are feeking better and I'm so sorry you felt so sick!

Yes, the book is called 消滅世界 in Japanese and it was an excellent read. I'm curious to how people will react to the ending. Murata doesn't have any new novels out in Japan but she has recently published some short stories and essays.
