    NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Natsuki's back! Show him some love by hitting the like button - he gets depressed if videos he appears in don't perform well! (Haha, genuinely). BUT WHAT tongue twisters did we miss?! And as we help Natsuki on his long, long road to becoming a world famous actor, we're open to ideas on how to make it happen! What would you like to see him do and WHERE would you like to see him go...

      There is only one path for Natsuki, First we start with sentai and/or kamen rider, then we get him to star in an anime and then a movie.

    It's interesting to see how the lack of a distinct L and R causes difficulties in perceiving their difference altogether.

    • @imolaunger
      @imolaunger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      "What's the difference?" He genuinely couldn't tell! Fascinating!

    • @TheoneandonlyBobb
      @TheoneandonlyBobb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I have heard of people who can't distinguish between /b/ and /v/. I can't understand how, but that's apparently a thing. At least it's not /β/ and /w/, that's difficult to distinguish, I think. So yeah, it's interesting how the brain can't deal with sounds it is not used to.
      Then again, all (healthy) humans of all over the world are physically able to articulate all sounds of all languages. The only limiting factor is your own brain.

    • @Audiojack_
      @Audiojack_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Frog Man Yes, and in certain languages it's more common to have such difficulties with pronouncing certain sounds like rhotacism for R sounds. But this lack of perception is observable in other things; if your culture and language don't distinguish between the colours green and blue for example, you'll actually have a harder time perceiving their difference.

    • @TheoneandonlyBobb
      @TheoneandonlyBobb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Frog Man
      Yeah, muscle memory is the biggest hurdle to overcome. I think when learning a language with new sounds it's very important to consciously try and voice those sounds individually instead of blindly attempting the sound by mimicking the pronunciation of words. Your brain will default to what it knows instead of producing the sound you really want.
      Cross sections of the mouth help with that, you can see how to position your tongue for each sound and how to position your lips and teeth.

    • @viljamtheninja
      @viljamtheninja 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Audiojack_ "if your culture and language don't distinguish between the colours green and blue for example, you'll actually have a harder time perceiving their difference". Are you sure about this? I know the Japanese sometimes mixes the two up sometimes (green traffic lights are called blue lights, newly grown spring leaves are called blue leaves, etc) but the people have no difficulty discerning between the two colors.

      They aren't as hard for English speakers though as English tongue twisters are for Japanese

      @@kabur88 damn even the English cant hack them half the time.

    • @ThePandafriend
      @ThePandafriend 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kabur88 The "R"-mores (らりるれろ) are pretty hard to pronounce properly.
      It's a sound made by putting the tongue between the positions of "D" and "L", straightening out the tongue and hitting that point. You can't "roll" a Japanese "R".
      So for foreigners from the west it's the other way around.
      Also for yourself it still doesn't sound right, even if you're doing it in the right way, so in order to find out wether you did it right you have to record yourself.
      But at the end of the day it's easier. On the other hand it's easier to make the sounds. Most western sounds can be made much easier than Japanese sounds.
      For example you can learn the "R" by gargling water. For other sounds you have to change the position of the lips instead of the position of the tongue.
      If they would use the proper methods for learning the pronounciation of words from west it would be much easier and sound much better.
      It would make sense to use speech therapists in addition to teachers, or at least use methods of speech therapists, even if the teachers come frome abroad.

      @@ThePandafriend fascinating stuff...I had no idea !

    • @ThePandafriend
      @ThePandafriend 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rubbseh I had a very hard time learning the Japanese R, but now I know how it's possible to learn it properly. No guide worked for me, I developed my own method.
      Oh, and I made a mistake in my comment, it's a mix between "L" and "D".
      Guides that actually help are rare. Usually by following a guide you reach something similar and form it eventually into the more or less correct version through training.
      But here's a guide which actually helps you to reach the correct way of making the sound if you want to learn it.
      A small part of it is my idea (probably someone somewhere teaches it this way, but I found nothing which is similar to my method), a big part of it is how to learn the voiced alveolar trill. That means an "R" which is performed with the tip of the tongue.
      You make sounds in which an "L" and an "D" is surrounded by vowels. For example "teLe" and "teDe", but any sound works if this condition is met. Now you make this sound and always swap between the "L" and "D" version. You do this until you fail to do so. It can take quite some time and may need a few sessions, but eventually it should work out. For me it took several 1-2 hour sessions, but most people learn it faster.
      When you reach the point of "failure" you try to go into the direction of the "fail". If you keep on following this way that's how you learn the voiced alveolar trill.
      However in the case of the Japanese "R" you tap the alveolar instead of holding the tongue in that position and you need to keep the tongue mostly flat.
      And that's all there's to it.
