    NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Natsuki and Ryotaro united at last! What more could you want from a video? For the next few weeks Abroad in Japan videos are going old school; which basically means it's just me in a room eating cup noodles. But do any of you share my childhood fear? And do you want to see Natsuki quit smoking?! Let me know in the comments.
    And don't forget to check out the new Abroad in Japan website and steal some soundbites from the soundboard! Enjoy! (www.abroadinjapan.com/)
    Stay safe guys

    I used to smoke for 17 years, and I was addicted to it. That breakfast that Natsuki enjoys is called a "Fisherman's Breakfast", and it is every smoker's breakfast. Smoking suppresses hunger, so it would obviously replace actual food for breakfast. I also used to smoke as much as Natsuki, roughly.
    But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just woke up one day and said that I'm done smoking. However, you can't force a person to quit, because they will get pissed off, and they will resist quitting more. I certainly did. It is tough, man, but it's a decision that needs to be made by Natsuki.
    A couple of things that helped me:
    - Don't drink coffee or alcohol for about a month (both lead to temptation of smoking)
    - Replace smoking with another activity (I replaced smoking with exercise)
    - Keep your hands busy. Half of the anxiety that comes with quitting is that you need something to do with your hands.
    - Don't make a big deal out of quitting (the more you focus on it, the more you crave). I had actually forgotten how long ago I had quit, but apparently I'm on my 8th month. Woohoo!
    - Never say "I'll just have one". We all know what that means with booze, so it's obviously the same with smoking. One is never just one.
    - And, lastly, avoid social gatherings for a while. They generally tempt you into smoking, as well.
    Natsuki, if you want to quit, these are some things that helped me overcome an addiction that I thought I never would. I know that you can beat it, bud :) (if you want to, of course)

    • @KryKaizen
      @KryKaizen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      damn thanks for taking your time writing those out and I'm happy to hear your progress of not smoking! One question though, have you try or heard the chewing gums trick? I heard it also helps you since you keeping your mouth busy from smoking. Hopefully Natsuki can gradually lives a healthier life so I'm looking forward as well for the documentary if he ever going to make one.

    • @emilyjadeoliver
      @emilyjadeoliver 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@KryKaizen It's my pleasure :) and thanks!
      Gum works for some people, but I just ate some snacks, instead. Partnered with exercise, the food did my body good, considering that I was burning a lot of energy.
      I completely agree! Unfortunately, smoking is an addiction. The amount of times I said "I know that smoking is bad, but I just enjoy it so much". It sucks letting something have that much power over you.
      Natsuki will make the decision for himself, and he'll have good friends to support him. I hope they're prepared for cranky Natsuki, though. It's unavoidable.

      For all those who want to be non-smokers.... I always recommend “Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. It’s been translated into about 26 languages, I don’t know if Japanese is included. The English audiobook is amazing. I did try to read it once, but I found the material stuck better with audio. It’s only a 6 hour listen. I sometimes go back and listen to specific chapters if I need too.
      It’s a powerful book, and seriously.... I cannot recommend it enough.

      Still don't understand how native speakers always meas this up.
      It's so easy and it's weird to see it get messed up all the time as a "non native english speaker".

    • @tiagobsreis
      @tiagobsreis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      This kind of mistake is much easier to make for native speakers, because they first learn how to speak and only several years later they learn how to write, essentially as a process of coding the speech into graphical symbols. So it's easy to mix up things that sound the same, even if their meanings are obviously different. Non-native speakers usually learn writing along with speaking and their minds associate foreign words with the words in their native languages, where they probably sound very different, and thus the risk for confusion is minimized.
      It happens in other languages as well. My native language is Portuguese and we pronounce the words for "plus" and "but" ("mais" and "mas") in the same way, so a lot of people keep mixing those two up when writing. Obviously, for someone whose native language is English, it is impossible to accidentally swap "plus" for "but", so if you think of a sentence in English and translate it word for word to Portuguese in your mind, you won't be making this mistake that a lot of proficient Portuguese speakers make.

    • @pascaletje9
      @pascaletje9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Cameron I'm sorry but even for "quickly typing" it's not that hard to know the difference. I understand messing up a lot of words but your and you're must be the easiest grammar of the english language.

    Chris! The documentary about Natsuki's addiction to cigarettes would be awesome, PLEASE DO IT!!!
    I was a smoker myself and I had a hard time quitting cigarettes... I tried patches, nicotine gum, lozenges etc. One interesting way that I find helped me quite a bit psychologically was to tell myself that I would smoke again (kinda like I will meet you again old friend), but that day would be far far away. With the exception of a few cravings here and there, I think that I overcame the hardest part. I haven't smoked a dart in over 3 months now! (I was a one-pack-a-day smoker for 6 years, and a smoker for 10).

    I am now going to do something here, that I have always hated when other people did 🤣
    Dear Natsuki.
    I am an old smoker. I smoked 40 cigarets a day for 20 years, and before that I smoked between 20 and 30 a day for 23 years. I started smoking at the tender age of 12.
    Last year on Christmas eve I decided enough is enough. I put out my cigaret and threw away the rest of the packet. I have not smoked since. Still get these pangs where I look for a cigaret and it is HARD. But most of the time I do not think about it.
    In my life I have tried many, many times to stop. But I never succeeded. I believe you need to be ready for it to work. It does not matter if your friends and familie are ready for you to stop, If YOU are not. How do you know, you are ready then? I do not have the faintest idea. All I can say is this, if and when you think. "I want to stop". Go for it. Maybe you are ready, maybe not. But at least your body will benefit from the days you succeeded in not smoking, or smoking less. It wont hurt. And one day, you may just hit the right moment like I did. And then you are a former smoker.
    Good luck and stay safe

    Funny you should mention E.T. scaring you:
    When I was a young girl, I lived in a small town with a two-theater cinema. Given that it was so small, the cinema could only have two showings at a time (duh), and so my mother would usually let me decide between whatever movies they had available (provided it wasn't R-rated, of course). Well, it just so happened one day that the cinema's selections were The Island and yes, E.T..
    Much like you, E.T. scared the crap out of me. I wasn't exactly inclined to sit in a theater for almost two hours with his wrinkled, panty hose-looking face looming over me, so I begged my mom to take me to the other movie. My logic was that a movie called "The Island" would be peaceful and tropical. You know, like an ISLAND. My mom was confused by this, but seeing that the movie was PG-13, she figured it would be okay.
    And *spoilers* for a 15 year old Michael Bay movie:
    The plot revolves around clones trapped on an island, including scenes where a guy has nanobots crawl into his eyelid and another where they kill a woman minutes after giving birth. As you might expect, I came out of that experience mentally unscathed, with absolutely no worries about what the doctors might do to my then pregnant mother.
    TL;DR
    I was so terrified of E.T., I went to see another movie just to avoid him, only to be traumatized by THAT movie instead.

      I don't want to speak for Natsuki, but I don't think he really is interested in stopping to smoke. I think he doesn't care about death, nor life. He often seems to be trapped, with no real goal in life. It's not like he can't enjoy things, but he takes life as it comes, I doubt he really has sth like a bucket list.
      So I just wish him to find his place in life, to be happy, and if that is reached, healthy without smoking, to make that life enjoyable as long as possible.

    For Natsuki's smoking addiction: Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" - I haven't tasted tobacco for nearly two years now and I got my sister and a couple of friends to read it, they also quit. Haven't felt the need to smoke, not even for a second. It explains how tobacco addiction works on a psychological level, and it becomes pretty easy to break the habit from there. It also has an introduction for people who bought it for someone they care about, to have them try and quit, it would have some advice on what You can do to help. Best of luck ;)

    Hi Chris! Referring to the toilets down in the floor (14:10)... The tour guide of the sightseeing trip I took recently explained that these are for people who are wearing kimonos. Especially, the ladies' kimonos are hard to lift or she wouldn't like to crease it, so she would pee standing up. Not squatting, standing. Something similar refers to gentlemen in kimonos.
    I would be grateful if you could investigate this further ;)
    By the way, I had watched a lot of your films before that trip. Thanks to them, my experiences were more interesting and deeper than my friends'; many things I already knew so could concentrate on others. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    For curing Natuski's cigarette addiction, I've had 6 family members "cure" themselves of that addiction using e-cigs. And they were actual heavy smokers, think 4 packs minimum of cigarettes / day, even more during celebrations.
    Anyways here's the method we've had 100% "cure ratio" with:
    - get him an ecig, find flavors he'd love to smoke, then get those same flavors in ~24mg of nicotine /100ml of fluid (it might be too strong, so get him to a shop where he can try them out first)
    - after he's gotten used to it, reduce the nicotine level to 20mg, then wait a few weeks for him to get used to the new one, then 15mg, wait again and so on until you reach 0 (to jump to 0 you actually mix 0mg with 2mg ones of the same flavor, also this will take the longest time).
    Also DO NOT BUY THE ONES THAT RESEMBLE A CIGARETTE, those are absolute shit ecigs and don't do anything at all, either get him a "long boi" or a "mod cig" (ask for recommendations at the shop you're buying from.
    For example, in our case:
    - Any random ecig
    - Fluid: Liqua Blueberry / Bubblegum (24mg)
    - After several weeks, buy the same flavors (20mg)
    - After several more weeks, buy the same (or change), and make them less strong (15mg)
    - After several more weeks, 10mg
    - Leave it some more time here, then go for 5mg (start mixing 5mg with 10mg if it's "not strong enough"), and wait for him to get used to it
    - After getting used to it, start mixing the 5mg with 0mg, for example, filling a 100ml bottle with 50ml (50mg nicotine) with 50ml (0mg nicotine), shake and putin ecig
    - Keep increasing the 0mg nicotine percentage until you reach 100%
    - See how he "forgets" to smoke
    - Last step: thank me later
    The reason of the squatting toilet:
    - Try putting a stool under your legs when you take a shit and stand on it with your feet, kind of doing the russian gopnik stand.
    That "squatting" position actually releases a certain muscle near your sphincter area that's holding your shit in when you're standing up straight.
    Sitting on a toilet normally only releases the muscle half way, but squatting, that releases it entirely

      For me I can't handle the artificial flavour of an ecigs. That's why i can't smoke a vape. Most of the heavy smoker didn't transition into vape. Luckily Marlboro came out wit their new way of smoking tobacco called IQOS. It's easier for the lungs and have the kick like a normal cigarettes. I started to slowly reduce my consumption of it. And now im almost 2 month clean. Had stop both IQOS and normal cigarettes.
