It is stunning how so quickly this country went into ruins. The irony is that the institutional kleptocracy, widespread corruption, and utter lack of governance coupled with incredible incompetence hurt the most vulnerable people of the country majority rule was supposed to help.

@@frogfinance4605 well I don't think the rise of Mugabe had any thing to do with white hardliners. The only hardliner here who got away with his extremism was Mugabe, a terrorist who killed thousands of blacks ( he also killed whites of course ) because most blacks supported Ian Smith, and this conflicted with the narrative of the white colonialist and racist who kept the blacks poor and ignorant in order to oppress them.
All to the contrary, Ian Smith had to keep giving up to international blackmail ( sanctions ), specially from UK and US, and pressures from SA, on which it was dependent on security and other items.
The last to steps were sharing the government with blacks, who he always sustained were not apt yet for the task, and he proved correct, and then through the Lancaster House Agreement, holding new elections where the Patriotic Front ( that is, the terrorists headed by Nkomo and Mugabe ) would participate. The Agreement stipulated that any party who resorted to intimidation would be suspended for participation in the elections, but this was to no effect, Mugabe won the elections through indulging in wild terrorism to intimidate the black population into voting for him ( and not for Smith ) and the British ( who had retaken the government of the country for the period of elections ), betraying for the umpteenth time their agreements with Smith, accepted it and left the country leaving Mugabe in power ( for its utterly destruction ).
Smith tried to always do what was better for Rhodesia, and that is why he had to step down from the premiership, leaving a marvelous country in spite of 15 years of international sanctions. Mugabe never cared for Zimbabwe, he only cared for holding power, that is why he kept almost 40 years the head of the government and left a devastated country.
But Mugabe is considered by many a hero, and Ian Smith a racist colonialist.

Another prime example how when an pillar or power and responsibility that is typically learned or earned over time is given to someone that has NOT earned or learned the importance of that pillar... it goes to shit in a short period of time. That pillar of power and responsibility includes power and money. South Africa is another fine example. It seems Mugabe was initially magnanimous and promoted reconciliation but then something went terribly wrong. It didn't help that Ian Smith remained in the new government. That only inflamed old divisions eventually.
No Mandela was Mugabe though. Whether his initial moderation was genuine or not is up for debate. The Matabele certainly didn't find him conciliatory.
I stayed in Bulawayo in 2019 for a week. While I was treated well, never felt unsafe and even made friends, I didn't see a single other white person. The former white community is seemingly no more for whatever reason. Harare still has a small one.
Now I feel it's changing and hopefully now the xenophobic policies of Mugabe are history the country can recover.

I would have applauded him and ZANU, had they actually liberated Zimbabwe and brought in a majority-ruled government that cared for all the people of Zimbabawe - but that is *_not_* what happened. He ended up making himself a BILLIONAIRE by plundering the nation, utterly destroyed the value of the currency to the point where it is more valuable as wallpaper, openly threatens those who deign to vote against ZANU-PF with death (just search for "Vote ZANU-PF and Live" on youtube, and check out what passes for political advertisement in Mugabe's Zimbabwe; it's totally insane!), rewarded all his cronies with farmland he stole from others (for no other reason than the color of the owner's skin) only to then have the land lay fallow while the country that used to be the breadbasket of Africa now has to keep its citizens alive with bananas donated as foreign food aid, ZANU-PF literally just pretends cholera outbreaks aren't happening (this is their health plan), and he slaughters those who would object to all this. He is a failure in every sense of the word, and what makes it even worse is that racists now use his horrid tenure as President as some sort of proof that Blacks are incapable of running their own country, rather than put the blame squarely where it belongs - on one single man and his sick political party.

A murderer who murdered 22000 innocent indigenous Matabele people because of political intolerance. Turned out today in a country with about no press freedom. Hunger and poverty part of the daily lives of citizens, land grabs part of the ruling party's strategies to stay in power. Nationalization of the gold, diamonds and mineral mines gave birth to ghost and only skeleton operations left behind to generate income. Politicians that live in luxury.
