Background to Story: The trial in Zimbabwe of Government Minister of Manpower
Development, Edgar Tekere, has focused attention on major problems faced by the
newly independent state. Mr Tekere and seven of his bodyguards were accused of
murdering an elderly White farmer, and so Zimbabwe's White minority wanted
reassurance at the trial that their lives and property do have official
protection. The case also brought to light evidence of continuing rivalry between
the Zipra forces of Mr Nkomo, and the Zanla forces of Mr Mugabe, which led to the
fight for independence. During the trial there occurred the most serious outbreak
of fighting between the rival groups at a barracks outside Bulawayo. It reflects
the tribal division between the supporters of Robert Mugabe (a Shona) and Joshua
Nkomo (an Ndebele).

Oh, and it was the Rhodesian Security Forces who sorted out the Zipra armed columns - probably the last operation they carried out (under great force) but, as usual, very successfully. God bless the men and women of the Rhodesian Security Forces - God's Best.
Joshua nkomo at heart was a decent man but he woke up too late into the game and was stunned when all the predictions of Smith came true. He should of listened earlier and teamed up with Smith to suppress mugabe before he conducted his genocide and tyranny against the nation. Thank god he did actually oppose mugabe verbally with great bravery for a while, but in the end the intimidation and violence was too much and he capitulated although i dont blame him for that because the tyranny was unprecedented.

I don't think he woke up too late. I think age was a factor in his decision making. He was far older than Mugabe at that point and i believe war had taken its toll on him compared to the young and regal Mugabe.

They were a bunch of thieves. Minus rascism Zimbabwe was be a far better country as compared to the current situation. Poverty, tribalism, dirty politics, cholera, has Zimbabwe on her knees now.
Overall Mugabe and his cronies failed to liberate Zimbabwe as a whole. Referring to agriculture, viewing agriculture from a value chain stand point would make agriculture beneficial to farmers and non farmers. Look at the USA or UK; farmers are less than 10%. You cannot have every one farming and expect success.

Contrary to popular belief, Rhodesia didn't actually have racist laws, but what was called "qualified franchise", in which you had to have a basic education in order to vote. Most blacks did not qualify but the Rhodesian government struggled to educate them, even setting up affirmative action for blacks in universities. This was to prevent people like Mugabe from getting elected by an uneducated, superstitious, tribalist majority who quite frankly hated others of different tribes.
Sad most of my fellow black Zimbabweans still don't get it. They don't even realize how Zanu has rose to where it is now through manipulation of the uneducated

Tekere was getting his revenge - pure and simple. This particular farmer (Adams) had been resisting all of Tekere's onslaughts during the so-called guerrilla war. Note that Edgar Tekere was an alcoholic, and led a very troubled life - particularly being backstabbed by his great friend Robert Mugabe. Please read his autobiography.
Tekere was a member and willing participant of a Terror group that called itself ZANLA. They murdered people in cold blood and even raped the women and little girls before smashing there heads in. The only thing misunderstood was the belief that it was open season on white missionaries, farmers and soft targets. His book can suck a load, alcohol consumption was probably to make murdering easier or to block out trauma.
All of us farmers fought and killed terrorists like him.

It was so much worth fighting for Mugabe's guerilla war because we can witness how Zimbabwe became Wakanda.

Bulawayo doesn't mean "A place of slaughter that's wrong" it's actually koBulawayo... "The place of he who is being killed" referring to KING Lobengula who took over the rains in 1870 when he was supposed to have ruled in 1868 so he had to defeat "u Zwangendaba" Mbiko Ka Madlenya's regiment before rising to the throne. So it was kill or get killed hence "Bengingo Bulawayo ngibulawelwa ubukhosi bakwethu" loosely translated to "I am he who is being killed for the Kingship throne"

@morton christie Point of correction the King who named his capital koBulawayo is Lobhengula who never went to Zululand. Mzilikazi only had 2 Capitals in Present day Zimbabwe which is Inyathi & Mhlahlandlela where he is buried.

@morton christie you can't say " defeated the evil shona people". Really? Do you know that the ndebele people are originally Zulu? Do you know how the ndebele became part of Zimbabwe. It was Shaka Zulu's commander Mzilikazi who went Zimbabwe to loot and steal from the shona on his boss's behalf. He then decided to to take all the loot and establish his own kingdom. During the loot they killed, raped and kidnapped girls and women. The Shonas of that time survived on farming and livestock. Are you aware of these historical facts? Can whites today call the blacks in South Africa evil after all they are the ones who came and illegally settle on black people's land?

According to Tekere's interviews, he favoured a quick change as opposed to Mugabe's reconciliation tone. Tekere would have grabbed farms and kicked out white people soon after independence. Mugabe gave white farmers 20 years to give up their land. It's all your fault stubborn Rhodesians. Land should have been grabbed much earlier while the winds of change were sweeping across Africa. Mugabe was a very patient man taken for granted by the racist Rhodesians. Thabo Mbeki personally asked Mugabe to delay the land grabs for South Africa's sake. Land grabs in neighbouring Zimbabwe would have derailed South Africa's independence talks.
What did these land grabs accomplish if I may ask
I beg to differ with your notion , Mugabe was recruited as an M16 operative and fronted British interests, he was never patient with the British but was siding with them -the idea was to suppress and eliminate Soviet / Russian influence mind you that we gained independence during the cold war era, as you might remember the initial agreement on land redistribution was to be carried ASAP. Now , the same M16 having noticed that Mugabe was back tracking tried to Engage Tsvangirai and play the same script this time events turned worse , Mugabe defected and at a time he was about to be knighted by the Queen in 1994. We all know what happened to Tsvangirai and his supporters and white farmers.

As for my version of events, I was born in Zimbabwe a few years after the British hand picked their golden boy mugabe and not to mention i was born in Bulawayo where the matabele genocide took place! Even as a kid it stuck with me! The senseless beatings and murders! The outskirts of town & countryside stank of dead bodies due to amounts of mass graves dotted around everywhere! Can't count how many times police road blocks used to send my father & other citizens back home when they were on their way to work! All our domestic workers were being terrorised daily or knew of others that were... Like mugabe kept saying when asked: "it was a time of madness"! Still not justified and never will be
@morton christie I lived in Paddonhurst just on the other side of Robert mugabe way from yous in Northend (what used to be Greys Street). The township your are referring to that you herd fighting from 1980 must be "Cowdray Park"? I must tell you that the fighting was In actual fact going on even before 1980! My father who done his national service in the rhodesian army from a young ripe age of 16 years old was and still is a man of the world. He ended up deserting the war as soon as the British took power after the Lancaster House agreement! He has independently told me that the reason he deserted is because all the Africans were acting crazy! Both the rhodesian african rifles and the terrs were now either colaberating or fighting against each other! It was a sad sight plus Lord Sommes and the British army he had brought in like to think they were in control of it all but this was most certainly not the case!

I know kennel worth, suestown & Northend v well, after all I done my primary school education at a school by the name of SOS just before Northlea high, on the falls road. Funny you mention about the falls racing circuit because years before I left I can recall attending a race meeting and seeing a bunch of those idiots from across the way that seen it their right to walk right into the pits where men were preparing their cars for racing...when asked we were all met with "ay ay ay this is my country I am free to go where I want you can't stop me".

This white translator says Bulawayo, in IsiNdebele, means a place of slaughter. You have the wrong information chap. Bulawayo means, 'he who is to be killed' from a Ndebele phrase made by the Ndebele King Lobhengula after the Ndebele Civil War of 1870. The King said, 'bengingobulawayo', meaning 'I was to be killed'.

Kahle mfowethu, in a way you could both have misinterpreted the context of the symbolic name. The name or phrase Bulawayo was first used in the capital of the early Zulu empire under inkosi uShaka otherwise known as uShaka kaSenzangakhona. After his painful rise to power he wanted it to be known his kingdom's capital and place of residence was not a place of play so he named it Kwa-Bulawayo (also prefixed according to context with 'gu-' or 'kwa-') as to let any potential enemy or threat know that death was eminent and to ensure/enforce this he had regiments of soldiers run around the kraal in patrols that ran through the day and night.
Bayethe inkosi uShaka, Bayethe inkosi uMzilikazi, Bayethe to the two great nations and tribes that are instrumental symbols of Southern African history.
@@charleyboi22 there is no denying the greatness of Kings- Tshaka and Mzilikazi, but the meaning of Bulawayo of Ndebele is a bit different from that of the the Zulu, though the names come from the word 'ukubulala' to kill. Ndebele's Bulawayo came to be after the civil war between those who were opposing the installation of King Lobhengula, thus uZwangandaba of Chief Mbiko Masuku and the many regiments who stood alongside King Lobhengula.
After that, the King changed the name of his kraal from Gibixhegu to koBulawayo [lo obulawayo] because he had told his subjects that, 'bengingobulawayo, ngibulawelwa ubuKhosi bakwethu'. That's how Bulawayo came to be in 1871, then modernised in 1893 after the battle of Gadade where the Ndebele lost quite a number of warriors [including my great grandfather Gwayilana Sigabade - from my mother's side- of iNyoka regiment. My great grandfather Sikhumbane, from my father's side, fought under the iMpande regiment of Chief Sindisa Mpofu, quelling the Botswana police on the western side of Matabeleland.
Please revisit your about how the city of Bulawayo came to be known. You can check with ubaba uPathisa Nyathi or Arnold Mayibongwe Nkala for reference.
@@dingindleladddube4099 I am also aware of that version of the supposed history to the claim of the name however it very much like many other versions(including the preceding one I explained) are assumptions or at best interpretations of the translation. Truthfully speaking we may never know but in a sense both plead their case well. Otherwise ngithabela ukubona umuntu oloba ibizo lenkosi uLobhengula njengokuba kwalo, siyabonga wakwethu!
