Dan's capacity to reflect, listen, and change as a result, is simply amazing. It's SO hard to "kill your children", and his humbleness and self-reflection are really inspiring. Also, seeing those early prototypes, I can only think "wow, how lucky we were that he actually DID change things"! :-D This is a masterclass for game designers, well done!

Brilliant interview! Obsession is an all-time favorite game for me both because of the theme and gameplay but also because of Dan! He has truly elevated the hobby with his class, dedication to excellence, and his humble and teachable spirit. And he has created a game and community that I love!

Thank you Candice, well done. It takes some of the fear out of game design to hear about Dan's intuitive process, his mistakes, and how he was willing to learn. There are some great practical tips in here, such as tools to use for prototyping, how to find thematic art for free, and the importance of art to elevate a good mechanical design into a game people want to play. I'm also amazed about the way Dan used his Kickstarter campaign as a crowdsourced design process as much as a crowdfunding campaign. I look forward to seeing more candid stories of game design like this one.

The stuff about some level of randomness being a necessity in thematic games is spot on to me! Fantastic interview series Candice, and Dan is amazing.

Thank you Candice and Dan, that was an enjoyable way to spend an hour! Dan - I am pro Objective Cards in the game. They’ve been a great tool for teaching new players. With so many options available, some players have a hard time deciding where to start. A little push in a direction is a huge benefit.

I love Dan sharing the story of Obsession and how it evolved. I remember the original kickstarter and loved the game. Can't wait to play the trick-taking game! :)

50:35 Why did he name it Obsession?
That's what I was mainly waiting for. Thanks for asking what we were all thinking, Candice!
Dan seems like a genuinely humble guy. And he's very active on BGG and quite helpful with keeping up with this game and questions that arise. Awesome stuff!

This was a very enjoyable episode! I just played Obsession yesterday for the first time and I can really tell is a work of passion in understanding the theme and the period, and letting it all manifest thru the mechanics and a little use of our imagination. Thanks for this episode.

Love this in-depth interview and your enthusiasm Candice. I loved how thematic Obsession is, and I wanted to play it immediately when I read about it. I'm planning to get another game in next week. I had to pull the birthday card to get this game to the table the first time, because we do lean towards sci-fi and fantasy gameplay here. We have played a lot of Strike lately too because it's really quick to teach and play. I love the backstory. Beautiful design on the game, and it is fantastic that you mention your inspiration for how parts of the game works. - Debbie

This was really cool and insightful. I only got into the game during the latest campaign with the Upstairs/Downstairs expansion (which I still need to play), but I've really enjoyed it. Dan's drive and love for the game really shows through this as well as the other videos he's released throughout its production. I look forward to the upcoming design!

I loved the questions, the answers and the whole conversation, full of insights of such a wonderful game, however I have to be honest here: it was painful to watch... or more specifically, to hear. And I want to say this with full respect and truthful constructive criticism:
Candice has a lot of charisma but her bursts of laughter were hurting my ears. Several times Dan was telling a great story only to be interrupted by the loud noise coming from Candice's mic. And this could have been easily solved with a postproduction treatment on the sound, limiting the peaks of her interventions. So whoever did the final editing needs to mind not only the image but also the sound mix. End of rant.

Dan's comments are interesting. I didn't enjoy the split screen where Candice is blithely laughing on the left while Dan is talking on the right. Do yourself a favour and don't use the split screen...it doesn't do you any favours.

I kind of liked the occasional split screen. To me if felt like I was in the room listening to a conversation where I could glance up and see the reaction of other people to the main person telling the story. Candice is asking great questions and I like to see her reaction to some of the answers.
