He IS a high level conjuration trainer, and according to him most of what he's learnt as an apprentice has been from observation rather than any actual instruction on Neloth's part, which means he's teaching himself. We first meet him screwing up a high level spell but that is only because of a caveat most other spells simply do not have and he technically did manage to cast it anyway. It's likely that he is in fact very good at the theory and understanding of magic along with possessing raw talent, he's just not very wise or practiced.
@@zigzaghyena Exactly, he is supposed to be a young apprentice relatively new to magic yet he is casting Expert and Master level conjuration spells. The giy could probably be the new master of conjuration in the college of winterhold with that aptitude and likely be one of if not the best in Skyrim, but to Neloth he is just a apprentice. If he is supposed to be young and inexperienced amd could do all that, imagine what he could do after a few decades of learning from Neloth? Also the fact that its just a few decades, to learn what normally takes people lifetimes. Neloth is implying that he has the aptitude to only need months to years to learn what takes others decades.

Not that I haven't been levitating, mind you. I found a steel dagger with a levitation enchantment in one of the Vivec sewers, think it was under the Arena.
I have literally never struck an enemy with it despite running short blade as a major skill, I solely use it for levitation. Mostly around Vivec, makes travel between neighboring districts and compounds so easy. ESPECIALLY to and from the Foreign Quarter, which has no upper level bridge whatsoever. Probably intentional given the local xenophobia but still, dick move on whoever build the place.
Idk about that one dovakin can use op shouts
@@redeye4516 probably Vivec
I mean if you ever played Morrowind, you couldn't even properly explore most Telvanni towers without a levitation spell or a potion of levitation.
Just realized that Neloth and Muung Daal share the same voice actor.
“Schniztel, fetch me my alchemy book”
and he is mad dog Murdock from The A-Team, therefore a telvanni since ever.
Schnitzel: "Rada rada."
Holy fucking shit.
I watched that show all the time back in the day and have played this game since release and never noticed that.
I'll mever unhear it. Especially when he gives shit to his apprentice.
"Where is that clumsy apprentice of mine? Chowdah! Oh no, wait. The show's over."
You might think that him casting candlelight is a pathetic show of skill on his part, but he's actually roasting the shit out of you by implying that candlelight is an adequate spell to teach to a mage of your level.
Any mage who needs a torch clearly needs to learn Candlelight.
Candlelight is one of the most useful spells' bro.
Torches are pretty useless and fucking dangerous in a serious fight because one of your hand would be blocked.
Candlelight on the other hand gives you light, and you can use ALL your weapons.
Mage of my level?
Bastard doesn't even know lighting storm or blizzard
“I can show you a trick or two”
*creates floating light ball to achieve dominance*
Damnit! The one spell I didn't bother to learn! You win this time, Neloth...
Neloth : You're the archmage ? Yeah cool, you can become my apprentice in twenty years I guess. *~uses candlelight~*
Dragonborn : *~giggles~* Candlelight? Really?
Neloth : Yes, why?
Dragonborn : I'm THE almighty Archmage, seeing you using that low level spell is ... well, disappointing to say the least haha!
Neloth : You're using a torch.
Dragonborn : Yeah so I can see in the dar- ... oh.
Neloth : You're using a torch Mister Archmage. In a giant organic tower full of ancient books and staves, on a dry island.
Dragonborn : ...
Neloth : I'll see you in twenty years.
Ooooo!
Got eem!!!
that's why even my warrior characters learn candlelight
Ahhh sheeet bro
Criminally underrated roast! Needs to go higher!
Say what you will about Neloth, but letting him take out everything that breathed even slightly disrespectfully in and around that Dwemer ruin you travel through with him (up until the point where he just stands around and waits on you) was a real load off. Competence is a highly valuable resource.
I like how he comments on the staff of magnus. He sure loves his staves
Neloth is such an awesome character tbh, easily one of the best in the game
He's arrogant beyond belief, but he does actually have the skill and knowledge to back it up
Its also kinda cool that he grows to respect you as time goes on, even making you a honorary member of House Telvanni, effectively making the player Morrowind royalty
And , even though he treats his apprentices and staff like crap at first glance, it becomes clear he's not as heartless as a first impression would lead you to believe
Simply being a member of a house doesn’t make one royalty
Lore wise, neloth isnt arrogant at all. Telvanni wizards really are that powerful. The in universe explanation for why you could be so unbelievably overpowered as a mage in morrowind is due to the skills of the telvanni and mages in morrowind in general
All the experience and natural talent of High Elven archmages... *And no rules.* Just an anarchist commune where tricking and killing your way to the top is encouraged.
@@JoshSweetvale To be fair, their philosophy does grant their desired effects. Only the strongest and smartest lead and make it to positions of power.
The downside is the highly predatory nature of life means everyone is very long lived with little to no children.
your stronger then the morrowind character tho
@@reggielacey2235 the nerevarine would absolutely body the Dragonborn. It’s no contest.
@@Sehtlimbo Idk about that, the power of the Thu’um ain’t something to be trifled with. Combine that with his Daedric artifacts, his dragonscale armor and his ability to have personal dragon bodyguards, one of whom literally cannot die, and I think the Nerevarine might be in for one hell of a fight that would probably shatter whatever province they were fighting in.
To be fair about him casting candle light I think he was more or less flexing on you like
"Holding a torch, why hold anything when you can just do this, and not deal with smoke constantly"
Love how he asserted dominance by casting a candlelight spell.
Makes you wonder what Talvas had done to convince Neloth to be his apprentice
He IS a high level conjuration trainer, and according to him most of what he's learnt as an apprentice has been from observation rather than any actual instruction on Neloth's part, which means he's teaching himself. We first meet him screwing up a high level spell but that is only because of a caveat most other spells simply do not have and he technically did manage to cast it anyway. It's likely that he is in fact very good at the theory and understanding of magic along with possessing raw talent, he's just not very wise or practiced.
I literally hunted for this comment. Why is no one else asking this? 😂
Btw, Talvas can teach your conjuration up to 90, while conjuration master in the College can only do it up to 75.
Neloth: He isn't fit to be my apprentice
*Two seconds later*
Neloth: I'd be willing to take him on as my apprentice
Difference is he’d be it not cause he had potential. But cause he pays him by the hour.
Behold the Archmage of Winterhold: a barbarian who hates magic and only got into the college because it was the only way to open a path to a legendary amulet, and after a series of unfortunate events, he found himself as the Archmage while barely being able to cast Candle Light.
Man, I would have loved to see Divayth Fyr in the game. That guy was the ultimate Sigma Male Grindset before the memes. As in he's over 4000 years old because magic, collects daedric artifacts as a hobby, and has 4 daughter-wives who are all genderbent clones of himself and are simply numbered.
And he has an entire lab filled with corprus guys and the last living dwarf. What a chad.
He's probably still living comfortably on Vvardenfell in his tower. Knowing him he could probably stop all the ash and lava easy.
@@LadyLexyStarwatcher Fun fact: According to lore, he turned his tower into a teleporting demiplane that he can just plop down where ever he wants. So yea, he straight up said "Nah, fuck this ash."
He's so adorable, the way he gets so excited when he belittles Savos gets me every time, yes Neloth, you are the greatest wizard who has ever lived we know and we hate you yes yes did you take your medications
Divayth Fyr was the greatest of all time without counting living Gods.
@@acentialpapd9418 don't get me wrong divayth fyr was great but the lore has wizards who outclassed him, mannimarco is more powerful lore wise
@@tysej4 Well, I am in doubt, Fyr presence in a Plane of Oblivion is enough to raise alarm to the Prince who owns it, Like, if we enter a Plane, we are a ant, you may or may not feel a ant crawling in your body, but Fyr, is a Giant Spider that cannot be ignored, he can even fight Prince in their own Realm, and a Daedric Prince is almost all powerful in their realm. The vestige did the same thing to Molag Bal in ESO, but they had help of Meridia and Akatosh, and Fyr can do it alone.
@@samuelfilho8317 He has not fought a Daedric prince and won. He has tricked one several times. And has a tendency to fairly freely wander various daedric realms. Primarily Mehrune Dagon's realm.
Has stolen Mehrunes Razor in the past. As well as other knick-knacks.
He's a powerful Wizard, maybe the greatest in the 3rd Era, and I say maybe because lore hints at ancient Altmer Wizards on Summerset that is supposedly greater.
Or like the Maormer King.
But beyond being an immensely powerful wizard he's also.. Just really f***'ing smart. Studied the Dwemer, has probably the deepest understanding of their machinery.
Coupled with great knowledge of the daedric realms.
And knows much experimental magic.
All of that screams power. But I believe there are Mer with more raw power. I doubt they could defeat Fyr, as he'd be able to avoid any such encounter or even stack the odds in his favor.
But I don't think that lore wise he's the most powerful there ever was. Even during parts of his life-time.
@@tysej4 His clone Wife daughters say the only ones that maybe could be more powerful/Older than him are some mages on Summerset isles and the Divine Sorcerers(The Tribunal), great part of that is because Fyr does not concerne himself with Power or Politics, only with Knowledge. Say... did you see the Lore expansion of the dead lands DLC of ESO?
"I think I could teach you a trick or two," Neloth says to the Archmage of a famous magic college, as he skillfully casts a novice level alteration spell. Nobody can compete with this power.
The arch mage gasped in surprise for he actually had no idea how to use magic or even what magic was as, shockingly, he managed to get the position by charging through some power tripping elf with a shield before bludgeoning them with a mace
The way he says "Impressive...." sounds like we had just lowered his self esteem.
Goddamit, now I feel bad
I will return to neloth in the 20th skyrim anniversary as his apprentice
I remember the first time I got this line
Meeting Neloth I thought he was kinda obnoxious, but he quickly became one of my favourite characters
Thanks for this support enchanted robe, here is literally 10 gold... love you neloth
In morrowind they gave the best rewards. High quality magic items.
"You may be a master wizard, but do you have this?" **holds Black Star**
"Oh...oh no..."
Dunmer would've demanded our ass tossed out of his mushroom and prolly would've casted a spell to do it halfway through yelling at us with genuine anger and fear. Considering having the Blackened Azura's Star is a literal middle finger to her, it's hard not to want to put as much distance between you and the instigator.
Easily one of the best characters in all of The Elder Scrolls.
Remember that this is the same dude who wants to take Miraak as his apprentice.
Neloth is my favorite character in Skyrim full stop. Nobody is as hilarious to listen to or as able to back up their talk like him
He reminds me of Seto Kaiba.
It's times like this that I fully understand the attitude of that one guard who doesn't care if you can do some fancy magic.

Dk: did you know I'm archmage of winterhold
Neloth: really...let's me just summon the daedric Lords of whogivesafuck.
Neloth: cast candlelight

Neloth: So you're Archmage of the College of Winterhold?
Dragonborn: Yes but I only know how to cast flames and frostbite spell
He is kinda a master wizard.when we visited the dwarven ruin he downed a dragon with little problem all by himself with lightning attacks.he's not like others who run up to it with their fists and start punching
So, I'm guessing that's the future of the new Archmage, to be come Neloth's student and become a Telvanni wizard.
He's right not to be impressed since you can become archmage without learning or using a single spell

What is funny is that someone actually hacked the system to force Neloth and Savos to fight against each other using the stats they naturally have, and Neloth got his ashy ass handed to him by Savos. 😂There is a reason why Savos is Archmage... he is no push over, and unlike Neloth , Savos can actually conjure beings from Oblivion. He conjure both a Flame and Storm atrinoch during that fight. 😳If Neloth was an actual challenge, Savos would and could conjure two Dremora Lords to fight for him if he wanted to. Throughout that fight, Neloth was using adapt spells while Savos was using expert destruction spells and even master level conjuration spells. So every time I hear Neloth speak, all I could think of was that time Savos got him on his knees using expert lighting spells. 😂
Yes but that is game wise. Not lore wise to say neloth would lose. He is older than savos and has more experience. I honestly think lore wise savos wouldn't stand a chance against neloth.

It's extremely stupid that Bethesda removed one of my favourite guild features from Morrowind:
You can only advance in rank by increasing your skills and attributes related to said guild so in this case it's Intelligence and Willpower attributes and all the magic skills.
However in Oblivion and Skyrim you don't even need any skill to be past level 5 and you can easily become the Arch-Mage/guild leader.
Imagine an Orc brute who only knows a heal spell and a fire spell being the Arch-Mage of the College Of Winterhold lmao.
Makes sense given how the Telvanni dislike the Mages Guild, so that dislike probably extends to other magic orders as well.

He reminds me a lot of Calcemo in Markarth. And maybe Ancano. Exactly how much of their ability or knowledge is bluff, and how much is legit? Either way, it gives the game some flavor to have personalities like this.
On that note, the Auger of Dunlain is worth mentioning. I think his magical prowess, or at least the result, shows a much grander affinity for magic than just about any spellcaster in the game. The dude got turned into a ball of energy!
It’s legit he’s been around since Morrowind. Skyrim doesn’t even show off some of the shit he’s capable of.
Neloth never changed a bit, not since the nerevarine era
