Excellent vid. One thing Fred does consistently is that he fills in the technique blanks that other instructors sometimes leave. I appreciate those ‘Aha!’ moments.
What i do as a Southpaw when watching videos with orthodox stance is that i place a small mirror infront of the tv and watch it without thinking about reversing the technique in my head , makes it easier to focus on the informations and form, great video as always
This video answered all my questions and opened my mind to a Palm Down punch. I recently jammed my wrist Palm Up on a punching bag and I'm starting to play around with Palm Down simply because it's all I can do right now and I've noticed that I had more reach as a result.
Really happy about your mentioning of the difference between palm down and palm inwards when throwing the hook on the bag. Thought it was just me who couldn't get the technique right.
Nino Benvenuti KO'd Luis Rodriguez with a devastating left hook eleventh round, nobody ever even knocked down Luis before that fight, and Nino had blood pouring down his face from a deep cut to the forehead, ref was ready to stop the fight.
Yes Fran! Watching this with interest for a refresher, this is my fav punch - except right hook for me as i am southpaw. right upper, right hook, step off or roll and left backhand or jab is one of my fav combos. 👌
Nice combo Chris 👍 Glad you like this one pal, make sure you have a look at the Don Curry left hook if you haven't seen it before - beyond awesome. Thanks mate.
Thank you for the video coach. I learned some important less on the lead hook. And I think what curry did was execute a mini gazelle punch with a mid range hook, it's a rare punch and I think his opponent fell victim to it because he's not familiar with it
Tony Zales right cross to the heart followed by a txt book left hook to the jaw knockout of Rocky Graziano in the third meeting of their trilogy for the world Middleweight Title in the late forties for me!!!
Amazing shot Kyle. I love the fact that he threw preceeded it with 2 single right hooks to the body then feinted the 3rd right and let the left hook go - classic 👍
Watch the Curry fight. I think he was a bit pissed that he almost lost his balance and fell over...and then McCrory looked STRAIGHT at the left hand as it came. No chance.
Commentators themselves said: "you will not see a better left hook thrown by anyone ", regarding Curry McRory fight. However, Robinson vs Fullmer is considered one of the best left hooks ever thrown in boxing history. th-cam.com/users/shortsk3KDg96fG04?feature=share
Can you make video on how to set up the left hook? I watched the Curry -fight and the other guy really seemed to be out his league, bad jab and kept dropping his hand, chin up - just asking to be knocked out, terrible. I think the guy got intimidated by Curry’s force early on and didn’t have a game plan - that jab was painfully easy to counter. Normally no-one makes it that easy for you, one needs to set it up, so you can get the opponent on the range/open up. Can you make a video on that? Or how to trick the opponent into the range you want in general?
Hi I would like to get your opinion on this I don’t know if you will see this comment but I will post it anyway. I was told that if you hit palm down you get less power because your elbow is line with your fist were as palm in your elbow is lower than your fist resulting in more power .. what do you think ? I respect your opinion thanks 🙏
I need help, I have proper form when throwing my left hook as well as proper handwraps and gloves but my wrist for my left hook always dies..how do I fix this please
hi Coach: I want to get sparring at my boxing gym, but i can't wear mouthguard, it makes me gagging all the time. is there any alternative way? thank you
Dear couch frans ,i see you have done you new floor ,congratulations .k will came england from Vienna one of this days and then i will definitely visit you dear couch
I'm fairly new to boxing, trying to get good tips from everywhere I can. Thank you for the download and your videos, great stuff. Lots of good information to study, absorb, and practice. . I watched the Curry vs McCrory match you linked. Reviewed it in slomo and ran it backwards and forwards many, many times. The best that I can tell is that Curry slipped the jab, and had his weight on his front leg at that point. And then he did what Jack Dempsey describes in his book as a falling step, and unloaded the hook. At least that's what it looks like to this newbie. :) Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'll be watching many more of your videos for sure. Stay well. Cheers!
Great video coach! Thanks for share your wisdom. Talking about hooks, can you make a video on Manny Pacquiao's Manila Ice, please?. Looks like a mix between an hook and an uppercut. Regards.
Thanks for this, Fran! A question about the long-range hook with palm facing out: If you're able to turn your wrist in enough to always make sure you're connecting with the fist and not clubbing, is that allowed? Or is it just best not to risk it? I find the long hook with palm down more cumbersome and less likely to wrap around my opponent's high guard.
Thing is to know what the issue is if the ref issues a warning Willis. Try whatever. If you get a verbal in the bout from the ref you then know you need to (and can) make the adjustment 👍

My favorite left hook is the leaping gazelle punch perfected by Floyd Patterson in the '60's then Mike Tyson's. They shared the same trainer.
Great shot. Bit of risk but done at speed can be massively effective 👍
Excellent vid. One thing Fred does consistently is that he fills in the technique blanks that other instructors sometimes leave. I appreciate those ‘Aha!’ moments.
Thank you Jim 👍
Tried it as a kickboxer while sparring at boxing ruleset. Stood too close and ate few hooks. Gave it up for a while.
i find as a begginner when i keep my palm down when throwing hooks it also keeps me from busting my wrist especially when hitting the heavy bag
What i do as a Southpaw when watching videos with orthodox stance is that i place a small mirror infront of the tv and watch it without thinking about reversing the technique in my head , makes it easier to focus on the informations and form, great video as always
This is probably the best guide on this blow on TH-cam right now

Great video coach! One of the interesting facts about your channel is you focus on pure knowledge rather than prioritizing views which is amazing.
My favourite left Hook was When Frazier dropped Ali
Peach, everything in it and Ali did very well to rise

Did a check hook on a friend carrying on , almost killed him and nearly shat myself fs !!
Hi Frank, from across the pond, great videos thank you!
Ronald “The Kid” Coleman
With the left hook to the body I've been taught to turn the back foot asiv I was throwing my backhand. Would you agree?
I would go more with the drive from the lead foot Luke, but variations are allowed 👍

Coach, when do you let your students start their sparring ? What do they need to be able to do in terms of fitness and skill? Cheers
Robinson vs Fullmer 2 is the best left hook I’ve seen the speed, power and accuracy was absolutely perfect

Amazingly the round surface of the glove also spun his head like a gear.
Excellent explanation

Absolutely brilliant videos! In depth and the knowledge is on another level..
No B.s Fantastic
My fav one is Joe Frazier punch that knocked out md. Ali & also tyson combo right hook to body & then right uppercut.
Frazier v Ali 2 - Smokin Joe one of the very best left hooks in the business

I would tend to agree. The palm down can still get a KO, but yes, dropped elbow would be more powerful for me.

Fran, I like Plants’ left hook against Dirrel last year - went to the body, slipped and went to the head.
Peach of a shot Richard 👍
I have seen many awesome hooks, but the one that I love was Kaleb Pland hook to the body then hook to the head of DIRRELL
Peach 👍
