That is a slick trick! Your billhook is that a fiskars brand or another? Our billhooks are low quality here in USA. LOL, I whacked something using the blade like a hammer on the flat of it and the damn thing almost wrapped around the item I was wacking! LOL, I guess they work fine if you use them correctly, but I was a bit shocked I folded over this billhook I had been using for years. Started looking on ebay and such for good old ones and they are pricey! We are buried in snow here so not much getting done but in a week or so it should be game on.
Thanks, yes a Fiskars its brilliant for dressing the hazel. I think they’re available in the USA. We’ve had -9 c here which has been great, no snow yet. Regards Darren
Hi Darren, you hedging stakes are taller than me at 5.4. great vlog and thanks for sharing. I do love the hedge layer binding, it looks amazing when its all done and great for the wildlife. Spring is coming and I am looking for the hedgehogs coming out in the spring. Just love them and after living in Australia having grown up in NZ where we have them, I really missed them. I'm not sure if they are here in France, (I hope so) but I am yet to see one. Have a great week and I look forward to the next vlog.😊
Thanks so much, Karen is 5’1”. Hedge layers make a lovely job eh. We love hedgehogs too but the local badgers mean we rarely see them, sometimes in the garden. I hope you get some. Take care, regards Darren
The only trick is to remember what your measurements are! Lol! Ice opted to just not care that much anymore. My stride is a yard. My arm span is 6'. Are they really? Don't know, don't care, close enough! (Not approved by my building inspector)
Hi Darren. Really love the videos and find them very inspiring. Currently learning the skills, whilst looking for my own woodland to manage. I have my chainsaw course in a couple of weeks (up to 380mm) and a bit bamboozled by the choice. Which model Stihl do you use? Any info would be appreciated and keep up the good work!
Thanks so much, all the best with your course and woodland search. The Stihl brand has always been good for me. I use an MS261 and it’s been the best saw I’ve ever had. But for occasional use or small stuff some have gone the battery route or a simple MS180/181. Echo saws have a good reputation too and husqvarna but I’ve not used either regularly
I generally cut scrap timber for the wood burner with my left arm, just to balance my effort etc.... stacked a few bits up and they were within literally a millinetre of each other and juuuust small enough to fit in the burner. Guess it's just repetition.
Ayup woodlanders, let me know what you think to my methods.
Hope it helps
Regards Darren

Rule of thumb (arm), tried and tested since the dawn of man.
Totally mate works every time
