My favorite video yet! Thank you for chronicling the history of the Hillsborough branch. A video on the yard at Greenfield would be cool as well. I loved learning about the last days of the route to Bennington. I was surprised to know the South Lyndeborough trestle was built in the Mellon era, but knowing it was funded by Monadnock paper makes a lot of sense.
Taking a look at the Monadnock Papermill in Bennington NH via Google Maps, anything being shipped is via truck, but in the view I looked at , there are six semi trailers. Not a lot of shipping at least in that view. Small operation. It is unfortunate that the GRS situation robbed the railroad of freight.
So CSX closed on the deal to buy pan am and they did A TON, A TON, A TON of work between the nashua mainline and down into wilton. I read an article from a few years ago that monadnock paper mill was happy about the deal with CSX as it may mean they could see rail service again.... We shall see
They actually said they would never use rail again. One of many customers lost during the strikes that likely will never come back. Another prominent being Erving paper.
@@newpylong are you sure? I had read about them being excited to see what would work out with CSX buying the line. That was two years ago or so. They've done even more work on the line. Im wondering of suburban propane may even come back to being served. So much opportunity
@@ChickenDuck1776 Yes they were quoted as saying they supported the sale but were highly unlikely to use rail again. There were rumors about Suburban, but as a company they stopped receiving inbound shipments at smaller facilities quite some time ago. They have many similar facilities with direct access but do not receive service regardless of who the carrier is.
I love watching these videos, but they also make me sad.

Wonderful look at a once prominent line. Chasing the Bennington was easy, and the GP7’s or more often GP9’s let you know how hard it had been working.
I remember seeing the light in the sky from the flames of the fire from our farm in Antrim the night the covered trestle burnt.
