Motorcar Excursion on the Adirondack Railroad | Oct. 1-2, 2022 | NARCOA | NEREX | Railcar | Speeder

- Any day is a good day to ride the rails of the historical Adirondack Railroad!
In 1892, Dr. William Seward Webb had built the Mohawk and Malone Railway through the Adirondack region in northern New York. Within 18 months, Dr. Webb had completed the rail line from Herkimer to Malone. He later extended the rail into Canada.
We are so thankful that we got the opportunity to run our motorcar on a portion of the historical railroad. We began at the Remsen Depot and travelled north up to our turnaround point at Tupper Lake Junction. The video highlights many of the stations we passed along the way.
Endless thanks to:
Railroad usage and organization of the excursion:
Adirondack Railroad
Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern Railroad
NARCOA
NEREX
For the vintage photos, maps and schematics, these organizations have my endless gratitude and appreciation for being keepers of our rich railroad history. Most all photographs are circa 1900-1920.

Thanks for watching!
The best presentation ever on railcars.I am 93 and wish I could go on a trip. Keep up the good work and lets see more good events.I salute you from Sacramento,Calif. 5-17-2023.
God bless you, sir!
Beautifully done! I especially liked the attention given to all of the former stations on the route. The old pictures and narrative were superb!
Thank you very much! Very glad you liked it :)
@@railtime9872 Thank you very much for your comment.
Hmmm,
I was born in Tupper Lake, 1960. We moved to Los Angeles in 1965 and I've never been back home. It was on my bucket list...
But, I doubt I'll ever get back to pay respect to my Dad at his grave. Last time I saw him was when Mom left him in 1965. Oh well, rest in peace Dad, I'll see ya on the other side.
If it weren't for your videos I'd never be able to see such beauty. The scenery was gorgeous! I'll be 70 next week and since I'm handicapped all I ever do nowadays is armchair travel but that's okay because with people like you it's worth it! Thanks for taking me along. The trip was wondrous! 🚂🚋🚋🚋
Thanks for watching! So glad you enjoyed it. Hope you had a wonderful birthday :) Our excursion in New Hampshire will be out within a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
I truly wish you could actually go on an excursion!!
❤ and friendship from Canada 🚂🇨🇦
DITTO !! I'm 73 & totally agree to all. Fantastic video, history, research, commentary, well I could go on....
One of the best videos I’ve watched in 2023! I’m not a big train buff but loved this video and all of the history that’s included. Thank you from Michigan!
So glad you enjoyed it! I love history and found the backstory of this particular rail line very intriguing.
TH-cam suggested this video, I like a bit of trains, I clicked in, and wow, what a ride! Production levels are great, and the history lessons with video editing/graphics was a real treat. Thanks for the spin.
Thank you for the perfect seat. Id love to do this. But you know how disabillitys can be. Thats why I watch these videos. They get me places I can never go.
So glad I was able to share this with you :)
I had the privilege of being on this trip and I'm amazed at how much I learned from this video. Excellent production Angela, I'll be reviewing this before our next rip over this line.
Is this a trip that the public can sign up to do/buy tickets for? I'd love to take my family on this. My children are fascinated by trains (and myself as well, honestly) and the views are stunning! But I totally understand things like this being rare and likely hard to toss your name in the hat for.
No words can express my thanks for posting this video. My grandfather was an air brake inspector for the Boston and Maine R.R. his whole life, so I've loved trains since I was very small. This is something I've always wanted to do, but now at 72 years old I'll settle for these wonderful videos and ride along in spirit. Many thanks.
I was born and raised in the Adirondacks and had not seen some of thes places. Thank you!
That is an amazing documentary. Well done with attention to detail. The highlights, the music, the timing. The viewer is able to immerse themselves into the experience. Very interesting historical kept my interest. Great trip see all the side shots as well, crossing roads, safety meetings, doodle bugs being prepared. I liked the little dust on the b&w images as well. Thanks for the hard work.
Doug L.
Absolutely wonderful production, great editing, graphics, and history!
Thank you so much!
What a wonderfully produced and presented video! Chock full of reference information -
and the view! My Lord....
Thank you for sharing this with the world (and rekindling my interest in those little "rail
speeders", too 🙂).
- Ed on the Ridge
I have never seen (and I have reviewed many) a video that more appropriately highlighted the very scenic nature of the Adirondack Railroad (previously the Adirondack Division of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad) since it was recently restored to Tupper Lake NY. in 2022 by New York State. Not only was the scenery superbly documented, but the editing, maps, and narration were first class all the way. One truly feels that one was actually sitting in one of the track cars enjoying the trip. Thank you so much for this presentation. Question: How much exposed footage was not used in making this presentation, and could that be presented in another video, as you have documented the line beautifully.
Thank you for your kind words. There were hours of footage to choose from multiple cars as well as my own. There will be another excursion on the Adirondack railroad in early May. Perhaps I will post all the raw footage as one pass. Stay tuned!
Thank you for this breathtaking ride. Loved the history and the historical pictures of the then and now.
That was stunning ! Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it
oh , what a wonderfully awesome video ! ❤
well-made and thoroughly enjoyable ...
We like the History and the old photos 😊
Thank you. I loved using those old photos. Such a great perspective of railroad history.
14:55 That portable restroom is the ultimate caboose !!! Very cool trip, thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching! People always get a kick out of that :)
Very nice !
It be interesting to have camp sites setup along decommissioned rail lines to combine railcar adventures together with camping.
I'd pay money for that.
Love those little railcars!
Great fun and nice to see no breakdowns occurred on the journey...
In New Zealand the motorised 4 man track inspection and worker transports are called "Jiggers" because they have no cabin structure, are hard riding ...and you are "jiggered" after a long journey on them....
I lived near a railway that used these until the branch lines were torn up....
the one I lived near suffered that fate in in 1967....
a short sighted move that still haunts railway enthusiasts and tourist operators to this day...
Sorry to hear about that branch line. It is so nice when we can keep slices of history alive. If nothing else, it make folks appreciate of what has come before. Thanks for watching.
What a spectacularly scenic route this is. 😮
Hey, beautiful sceneries. Cannot resist to comment that the horizon is as flat as we can see.
Glad you liked the beautiful Fall foliage.
Small and nice train!!👋😃😃😃❤️👍
Thank you so much! Really enjoyed the historical backgrounds and photos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Are you a descendant of Dr. Benjamin Brandreth?
@@railtime9872 Yes
Thank you for providing the train station historical photos.

My pleasure. I love history so it was fun contacting museums and libraries for usage.
Loved it. Interesting historical information, beautiful visual content, superbly presented. You really know what you're doing. Thanks very much.😊
Thank you very much! So glad you enjoyed it ! Thanks for such a nice comment :)

Excellent program. I enjoyed it very much
Amazing video! Scenery was spectacular! I love the fact that these vehicles have been restored. Historical information in the video compliments the beauty. Thanks.

Thank you very much!
Wow wow wow I thank you so much for this Great vidéo , really professionnel and Thanks God to cross my road with you Angela 🥰
Отличные съёмки, отличный монтаж, отличная графика
I rode my railbike (pedal powered) from Big Moose to just below Tupper Lake. It was an experience of a lifetime... gorgeous. I ended up at a friend's place, right along the rails... I know his wife filmed this excursion going by... Now, I'll watch... maybe you caught her in this footage.
Absolutely wonderful 👏👏
Many thanks! Very glad you liked it!
The motor gang car with toilet wagon is so funny. Awesome! Ha, HA🤭
Thank you for posting this! Brings back great childhood memories of when we rode the rails (unauthorized....OOPS!).
Glad you enjoyed it :)
17JUL2023- just viewed this, excellent production. Easy photography to watch and very informative. Toughly enjoyed. Dan Kerr, Bruce Mines, Ontario, Canada.
That is so cool
So cool. I live near Balsam, NC and their claim to fame is that until the station was demolished, it was the highest railroad station in the Eastern US (3,304'). Topton NC, which is on the GSMR line, is 2,654', but again, no more operable station there. Dillsboro, NC is 2,060', and is still served by the GSMR...they might have 26' on you!
👍🤗cute mini train car......spectacular view love it👏👍😊🤗🇵🇭
Glad you liked it
the google maps bits were a really nice touch, i don't even like trains that much but i was compelled to watch the tiny trains and the very very decent editing, GJ!
Cool video thanks for sharing👍👍
Very relaxing and educational to watch, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love the Fall colors.
@@railtime9872 yes, I went on the Conway Scenic Railroad's Mountaineer excursion on October 8th last year, and fall colours in the White Mountains are beautiful. 🍁🍂
Love those little railroad golf carts.
That would be a blast..
It is! We have only being doing it for 2 years, but so thoroughly enjoy this hobby. Thanks for watching!
I so enjoyed this video. The narration was great, the old pictures really helped alot and the show was just wonderful.
Thank you so much!
Amazing that you were allowed to drive motor cars on this line!
Great job! Very informative.
Thank you. I really enjoyed learning about the history of this rail line. The local librarians and museum curators were very generous with their time and assets.
😎💯✌this is so cool I want one ....
Very nice video, LIKE.😁😄😍
Thank you 🤗
I visit the area many times and didn't know about this wow incredible thank you for sharing it with us
Thanks for watching! I had never visited this area even though born and raised in lower New York. What beautiful scenery and lovely people. I am looking forward to returning many times!
I very much enjoyed this history of the train stations, All the gorgeous scenery and lakes! Thank you so much for sharing.
Our pleasure! I found the history of that rail line so intriguing.
Greetings from Australia.
Wow and thank you.
This is WONDEFUL!! Oh my goodness, I'd love to visit some of these places. Thank you so much for posting! I'll be watching your other videos, I'm sure. Very well done, fantastic production. Keep up the great work!
This is a well produced and researched video! Love it! I love the Adirondack Mountain area and for many years went there to sightsee and hike.
Thanks so much! This was my first time in the Adirondacks. The scenery was beautiful!
This was a great TH-cam excursion. Hoping someday I will make the excursion on the motorcar, Thanks! good video.🙂👍
You should! There are sometimes events that are geared toward giving rides to the public. Check out www.narcoa.org for information.
I never knew these motorcars existed in America.
Us either! We always saw the old hand pump cars featured in movies. Then we found out they were replaced by these motorized versions which ran for 30-40 years. They were all scrapped and replaced by high-rails.

Glad you enjoyed it! I grew up in NY state and had never seen this area. The Fall colors were stunning.
Great production, I think that was me at bog river flow❤
That is you at 29:08? That is very cool! What a beautiful area!
They're adorable! so cute! I like the one with the crapper on the back. I'd probably need to ride in that one. 😂
Beautiful job! Thanks so much for the ride!
Thank you :)
Excellent well done in every aspect

such a nice video thank you im from montreal but a did spend many vacation in tupper lake i had a lots of uncle that had business in tupper lake
You made a very nice video. Thank you for uploading.
Very nice.
Excellent video.
The scenery is awesome!
Simply wonderful.
Thank you for sharing, the whole journey was interesting, I wondered what happened to the structures, fires perhaps its great to see some still standing and being used...the little motor cars are amazing, we don't have anything like this here in Australia...
You got me curious! I didn't know this, but in Australia they are referred to as "section cars" which may be why they are hard to find.
Here a link with resources for more info: www.nicdoncaster.com/sectioncars/
There is also a Facebook group: facebook.com/ASSCOinc/
and www.nicdoncaster.com/sectioncars/hobbyhx/Welcome.html
@@railtime9872 Hi, a lovely trip thru great countryside. I always imagine the US as desert with homeless and guns. The two nicdoncaster links do not work unfortunately. We Kiwis in NZ would be delighted if our Kiwirail would allow similar excursions, we have long lines with only one or two trains per day. Cheers and thanks.
Most enjoyable, well researched and excellently produced.
Thank you! Glad you liked the video :)
Absolutely love the narration and history, great video.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for leaving a nice comment :)
Looks like the ballast work on the line came out great! Was into Sabbatis when the stone was arriving. Great trip.
This was so enjoyable, thank you for documenting this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the ride, that was so enjoyable.
Thank you for watching :) Glad you liked it.
Fantastic tour video, great fall colors, thanks for sharing this ,
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very beautiful scenery and colors. Cute lil engines too. Would be a great way to explore.
Sorry for not getting back sooner... if it wasnt for your ❤ as a reminder, I would've flaked.
It was wonderful seeing the section I rode on my own creation, an attachment, that I made for a standard bicycle, an outrigger, and a guide to keep the front bicycle wheel centered on the rail. I spent many years perfecting it in Bethlehem, PA.
Since the bicycle steers itself, I rode no-hands most of the way.... it was like flying... slowly... the ride taking 5 hours. I think I made good time... Speed wasn't my goal... but I was in good shape... not so much now.
The attachment was encouraged by the guy who designed the 4 wheel railbikes I see parked on sidings... he had a bicycle guide wheel he designed, and wanted me to make it work. Try as I may, I couldn't, until I modified it, driven by the many failures of his design. I did a bit of lathe work, a few more failures, then finally, I got it working well.
It wasn't perfect, but I made it up and back with only one derailment.
The rails near where I live have hazards the Adirondack Railway doesn't. I got derailed way too often around here. At speed, it proved humiliating, and occassionally, painful. The last rerailment mase me so angry, I dismantled the whole device... back to square one.
I've a whole new design on the drawimg board... totally all mine...
I'm 73 now. My ride was 23 years ago...
You didn't catch my friend's wife. They live along the tracks, above Lake Lila, and Tupper... no highlights of interest for the film maker. Oh well...
They're good people... but not particularly railroad nerds.
I got an interest in doing this because I was a bicycle nerd, working for Bicycling Magazine... my dad, was the rail fan... I grew up with his train obsession.
I'm also a metal worker/mechanic/fixer/maker. Have a nice workshop.
I have seen videos of people out west who ride abandoned tracks with homemade railbikes. You are more adventurous than me! I love t you are designing and planning a new bike. We are hoping to do a run this year in PA.
Quality video. Wonderful journey. Thanks for the virtual ride.
:) Glad you liked it! More coming very soon!!
Outstanding video! Thank you for sharing…
So glad you enjoyed it!
Super
Glad you liked it :)
Enviable experience. My grandfather was an brakeman, I think, in Malone NY until 1933. I understand that he was employed with the Rutland (Vermont ) Railway.
Thanks for watching! I have only come to really appreciate our country's rich railroad history since getting into this hobby.
Thanks for this great video. I have visited the Lake Placid area several times and saw they used to have a rai line. It is nice to see this part of some of the north country rail lines. Very scenic particularly at that time of year.
Glad you enjoyed it! The fall colors were so beautiful.
Looks nuclear fun
It is! Thanks for watching :)
OK, So that was really very well done. Hope to see more...
Thank you :) I am currently working on the next video.
amazing!!!
Thank you!
That was fun to watch. Thank you. I really want a speeder train now... A fast one... and do a bunch of these!
I highly recommend this hobby! We only started less than 2 years ago. It is a lot of fun and all the hobbyists we've met have been fantastic. Thanks for watching :)
Nice! Had no idea the lakes were that big and numerous. I was on a 50 mile canoe trip with the boy scouts about 55 years ago- Raquette River/ Tupper Lake. Wow. Time flies.
I had never been sightseeing in the Adirondacks prior to this excursion. What scenery! Time does fly! You should get back there if possible.
Great Video - hope to take that trip this summer
You should! It was my first time in the Adirondack region. Prior I had only driven through it on the way to Canada. What a gem of an area!
Awesome job!!!😁😁😁
Thank you! It was a lot of fun delving into the history of the railroad line.
@@railtime9872 I have ridden it many times. It is a shame that they ripped up the rails between Tupper and Lake Placid!!! Alas, it was all about politics and power. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Nice video! I like the music as well!
Thanks!
I spent almost 20 years on trips to the region from Connecticut and never knew about it. Now I live a two full day drive from there.
I never knew about this region or its history either. It was fun to do the research.
@@railtime9872 The Adirondack Museum has lots to offer. And it's a beautiful area. I went there numerous times to visit my parents when they were still alive.
If I had the extra money and the space to store it, i would love to get me a railway speeder and be able to go on tours like this!
Maybe in the future!
Excellent Video! Just Discovered Your Channel And Subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed the video! I have subscribed to you as well.
Spent years riding motor cars for my job. Love this, brought back lots of great memories. Spent my track time in Central and northern Ontario.
Very cool! We have only been in the hobby for a year and a half. Next year we are hoping to venture up to Maine and Canada.
This is so awesome. I was at Tupper Lake last year on a day trip from Pennsylvania. I have since moved to Florida about five months ago. I have a video on my channel from the Narcoa speeder event on the Reading and Northern Line.. Thank you for sharing this 👍👍
