Minuteman Diesels Episode 5: The RS2s and RS3s
The Boston & Maine's purchase ALCO RS2 and RS3 locomotives helped cement the railroad's push to modernize and move towards a road-switcher mentality. These locomotives proved useful in a variety of roles from the late 1940s to the 1970s. We'll examine the legacy of these much beloved diesels.

Epping, New Hampshire's whimsical moniker of "the Center of the Universe" certainly didn't reflect its small rural nature, but it was at one point a busy railroad junction town. By the 1970s though, Epping was just like many small towns on the B&M system: still clinging onto its fading railroad presence. In this episode, we visit the "Center of the Universe" - Epping, NH - and discuss its railr...

Awesome video! Love the Buddliner going under the signal bridge in Waltham, the very spot I used to hang out watching trains in 1971. Notice the deplorable condition of the Fitchburg mainline. Also a nice view of the little freight yard that used to be there, with the Bemis branch local that we used to hop and ride nightly during the week, usually from the Quincy Cold Storage in Watertown to the freight yard in Waltham. Incredible video!

I have been searching for a while for any physical evidence remaining of the Manchester Milford branch. I guess after almost 100 years, it's been reclaimed by nature. Google Earth does label the old trackbed though. Does anybody know of any infrastructure remaining on this route ? Wonderful and interesting presentation and much appreciated.

Just like to add a few things to the history of the branch.I grew up some 50 feet from the branch in East Lexington in the '50s and '60s. There were several fatalities on the branch. One was a car vs commuter train behind Fire Headquarters on Camelia Place in the early 50s. A brakeman was swept to his death off a car as he was working to cut cars off for a Hanscom delivery. Seems phone lines were installed on poles over Westview St, but neglected to tell the B&M about it. Hanscom Field Air Base received a steady delivery of all kinds of freight until the early 70s. Hanscom had a large well, well-maintained rail delivery/unloading system on base. A large sewer system pipe was added along the roadbed in the early eighties. Designed by the MWRA, great pains were taken to install the gravity system sewer pipe from Bedford to the Arlington line. tie in. It was installed at the very edge of the easement specifically to accommodate the then-proposed MBTA subway tunnel. I spoke with site engineers at the time, and they said the tunneling at the time would be as easy as it could be.

I grew up in Epping and was there when "Epping is the Center of the Universe" was coined. It started as a joke and Howard Phelps, who was present for the joke, thought it was funny and had some bumper stickers made with the saying and sold them at his BP gas station on 125. It grew from there.

New Portsmouth residents that find issue with the trains and railroad really ought to go find something better to complain about. As a 28 year old person and 25 year resident of Portsmouth and graduate of Portsmouth high school, I love Portsmouth’s industrial core, and I hate seeing it be corroded by the inevitable gentrification that will be continually brought on as climate change causes more wealthy folks to move up to New England. I was lucky enough to get a cab ride in D&M 975, in Mackinac city, late in the 70's. We switched the CHIEF WAWATAM car ferry, and the yard there. D&M kept them in good shape, and they passed into LSRC ownership. 974 was not repainted, 975 ended her career in LSRC colors. Today, the track north of Alpena/Gaylord is gone, like the Chief Wawatam, and the yard at Mackinac City.Gone, but not forgotten .

My cub scout pack got a tour of the B&M shops because one of our fathers worked for the railroad. The things that stuck in my mind were the big heated caustic tanks used for parts cleaning, Mr. Sunskis starting an EMD switcher that was parked in the shop and being told they liked Alcos better than EMDs because Alcos were stouter machines built by a real locomotive company. I think they used the comparative sizes of Alco and EMD pistons to make the point. I don't know if that was the general opinion or just the guys working in the shop. This would have been in 1972 or 1973. Hard to imagine anyone letting a pack of cub scouts anywhere near those caustic tanks nowadays.

I have and will always forever love steam locomotives. I do have a soft spot for diesels, mostly first generation and some second generation. For years as a kid when I was growing up, I absolutely hated diesels because they were the death nail for the steam locomotives. But as I got older and I realized that's progress, we can't change it and we can't stop it and as I once heard in another documentary sentiment cannot stop progress. But I have also learned the importance of preserving that history so that we don't forget it. I was born and raised in Durand, Michigan. A very well-known Railroad town and I love Grand trunk. Western Steam, but as I grew up I began to show an interest in a lot of other railroads and their steam. The Boston and Maine was one of them. I like the style of their steam locomotives and I'm glad that a handful did survive and I appreciate the information you've shared about 3713s Restoration. I still am praying and hoping that it will if will return to service one day. As I once heard in two other films, the steam locomotive has something you can't find anywhere else and it's not just a piece of machinery. It's alive, it's human. It's the closest thing to life in a mechanical device and it is the closest man has come to creating life.
