A two-year-old in eastern China’s Zhejiang province fell to her death from the eighth floor of a residential building after she was forgotten in a lift by her nanny. Her father, in videos posted on social media, shared his grief at the tragedy.

I think that the apartment can be blamed partially for this as well, the lift's door closed unreasonably fast that anyone would have trouble reacting. This was truly an unfortunate accident.
And windows on the floor that can open are not exactly smart in an apartment complex where I'm sure there are many more kids

When you are babysitting someones child, you hold their whole world in your hands.
When you’re designing elevators you hold worlds in your hands. When you’re installing apartment windows, you’re holding world in your hands. When you’re passing off your child to a nanny, you are passing off their world to someone else’s hands. Moral of the story is, just do everything yourself. Lol.

That’s why people are cared for by their parents/guardians until adulthood, civilizations were created, and jobs for for a variety of fields-construction, programming, accounting, medicare, therapy, math research, science research, biology research, etc-were created. So how do we prevent things like this from occurring? Like the father said, we need to hold people to a higher standard and pass and enforce stricter laws.
@@burtonl7239 it is nanny's job to take care and always watch out the baby not the architect or the one who build the elevator/building,also always let the baby beside you and infront of you. What happens here can be prevented if the nanny is not carefree and always aware of the baby, not letting the baby behind her. Babies deserve to be watch out and take care by adults.

@@studyhard-tl4bx yes, youtbe is banned in china- but you can still send videos to a middle man outside of china so they can be uploaded to youtube. Only around 15 million chinese people speak english fluently, but it is taught in schools, kindergartens, and universities.. Swaggyxlizzy doesn't explicitly state they're chinese, just that they know a chinese language [presumibly mandarin, as it is the most popular one]. people can learn languages.
The saddest part is hearing the baby crying in fear and the father mouthing his loss 😢
There’s a lot of things to blame here:
- the nanny’s negligence
- the elevator taking off to the top floor too soon
- the building poor safety regulations on exposed windows
True but to be fair most of the fault is on the Nanny
The Nanny could have save her if she follow the elevator arrow and climb up the stairs each floor until she finds where the elevator stop. I guess she panicked. Poor baby girl.

As an architect. I blame who designed the building. It neglects the building standards.

As an architect, you should be aware that the building ordinance/regulations inspector should've corrected anything that is not compliant.
So in this case, either the regulations aren't sufficient, no one at building inspection did their job properly, or the contractor ignored the drawings.
The door also closed almost immediately

And let's take a step back. If the Architect produced a drawing that is within Building Ordinance Guidance, why is he liable? He did his job and followed the rules.

As dad of a little girl myself this is heartbreaking and I was tearing up watching the little girl freaking out being trapped in an elevator.
The way my heart broke when the little girl realized she was left alone and was crying and when the father held her toys. This makes me put my phone down more and spend every loving minute with my kids more. This can happen to anyone not just a nanny.
The fact that she was still alive after the fall. That agonizing 40mins where she's alone and severely injured and in excruciating pain. I cant imagine... Poor little angel. May you rest in peace.

Could be traumatic brain injury or very heavy internal bleeding ...
This makes me wanna learn first aids or learn some doctor stuff to prevent deaths from tragic events like this ...

Let everyone learn from this, take the kid's hand when leaving the lift. Material things don't matter, the life of a child is irreplaceable.

When parents choose a place to live, must make sure the building design is child-proof and senior proof for safety. This building has two design faults, 1. elevator door is closing too fast and not sensitive to low objects, 2. low open windows in hallways that even an adult can fall through.

I have a little sister. My gut wrenched in pain when I heard how she was still alive and feeling the deepest pain for 40 minutes straight. How scary, how agonizing would've been for little baby. May she rest in the beautiful place now. ❤
Pro tip: if you’re working as a nanny or caregiver, hold and never let go of the person you’re supposed to be watching over instead of taking the scooter out first.
if the lift was stuck at level 1 for 30 seconds the nanny could have easily opened the doors by pressing the buttons outside, no?
cause she thought the kid was on the scooter, if the kid was on a bicycle I would take out the bicycle by its handle too.

@@andyng5321 that’s true. But it’s extra responsibility for the nanny to hold on to their bread and butter. That’s what they were getting paid to do, to keep children/babies they’re supposed to be watching safe and alive by the time their work is done. The bicycle if left in the elevator would be fine and it can always be replaced. personally, I’d done this before watching over kids and taking a walk outside because there came a point in my job I started thinking I could not afford to get these kids lost and start a whole incident, was tie a short, soft rope or piece of cloth securely around my wrist (with a locking mechanism) and tie the other end around the kid (sort of like a leash), that way I’d never lose track of them even in case I get distracted and my attention went briefly somewhere else.
the fact that if the nanny didnt lie and misdirect the parents then the little girl probably would have been alive is sickening, she should have been tried for concealing the truth in addition to negligence
How could she have known where the child was? She did not lie and gave her perception of what happened. As anyone would in that situation she would have assumed someone had taken the girl. It was an accident and that's all there was.
@@fungames24 If she was slightly more sensible and responsible herself, she should have followed where the lift stops by looking at the display. The display shows at which floor the lift is currently in. She should have observed at which floor the lift is going to stop and rushed to that floor by the lift itself. Now since she didn't do any of it at least when she went to inform the parent, she should have given the exact lift location right away. But say somebody else might have used the lift before they made it to lift to see where it last stopped, even in that case they could have sent one person to check the CCTV footage of that particular lift and the other simultaneously could have looked for the child and recieved information on the footage via phone. Under no circumstance, it could have taken 40 minutes and the baby would have been saved. This is how she is responsible for causing delay in addition to the obvious negligence. That's a very small child to have the ability to rationalize, think through and not panic the second left alone. She should have been extra careful with the child of that age. Absolutely no excuses.
Also, if she were to right away direct them to the exact lift, in such a short span it's not possible to simply assume someone might have taken the child. And taken or not, you have to follow and trace the child where she could have ended up through the lift. That's the most plausible way of looking at things here. She may not have exactly lied but definitely irresponsibly handled the situation. She should have been crystal clear with where she left the child especially in the case of such a small child.
I will add three more important observations. Since she was a nanny to such a small child, she should have let the child leave the lift first and not after her. You never let the child behind, you hold their hand and keep them at the same level as you or a little (marginally while holding) in front of you or hold the child in your arms. This is common sense.
Secondly, she could have stopped the door from closing very conveniently but she didn't.
Thirdly, the lift stood their for 30 seconds. One could have pressed the open button several times within this timeframe.
She kept on delaying everything. Her reaction wasn't reasonable and too slow. How does that make her quality for as a Nanny? Too many unpardonable mistakes.

Cameras literally show the baby crying for 30 seconds b4 it was taken to the 8th floor. She left the baby there on purpose then didn’t even tell the parents where the last known location was.

@@xstrdn This persons comment is a comforting thought in such horrific and tragic circumstances. No, life is not a Disney movie. But the bond between child and parent is real. If she had any sort of way to tell her father was there, it may not have taken her physical pain away, but it would have brought her the immediate feeling of safety and security only a parent can provide. We have no way of knowing if she was able to tell if her father was there, we can only hope. Why would you not want to want to hope that?

@@jonathanc264 did you not read the comments?? We stated multiple times that we HOPE she died feeling more at peace knowing that her father is embracing her. None of us were there so we don't know for certain. Reality is often cruel but all we can do is hope that she didn't go out in complete pain and suffering.
The most concerning part is how the elevator door closed immediately and refused to reopen once the nanny tried to get back in. I have been in many different buildings and most of it, if not all of their elevators opened even if it detects a slight movement near the door or if the elevator button was pushed even after the door closed. Im going off if the nanny immediately pushed the elevator button right after her mistake of leaving the girl behind, if she did, part of the fault was whoever designed said elevator. My prayers and condolences goes out to that family.

Not to say the nanny is not responsible, but those elevator doors snapped shut awfully quick as soon as she walked onto the platform, and looking at the video footage it does appear she tries to push the scooter back in the way of the doors to keep them from closing, but they closed so quickly. What's also strange though is, why was she taken to the 8th floor? She didn't look tall enough to be able to reach those buttons. In addition to the window being open so low, the whole design and function of the building just seems not right. May this little girl rest in peace.
Yes the elevator was a bit too quick, but I think in those big buildings in China, at some times there's a lot of traffic so it needs to be quick.
I believe, like in most elevators in Beijing, if there's something in between the doors or if we push the "open" button, inside of the elevator, it would have opened. Unfortunately the nanny wasn't fast enough to reach in-between the doors and the little girl didn't know, or didn't think about pushing the button.

Elevators in China are terrible. There was one horrible example where a lady was stuck in an elevator there and was only found dead weeks later by maintenance workers. Bad building planning, low building standards, and so on add to high occurrences of death due to negligence. For one thing, why is the window so low and open?
There's a hotel owned by a Chinese that also close is a short time than any elevator I've used. But that never happen in any other Chinese owned hotels as well. Perhaps that one owner by a person from China and maybe that's a China thing.
I feel so bad for every parent who lost their child when the child was at a young age. This made me want to cry. The father did not deserve this. You can feel the pain.
I've never seen elevator doors close SOOOOO quickly. There should be an investigation into the company that installed it and see if they were told to speed up the door time to close faster because that was ridiculously fast

SUE THE BUILDING CONTRACTOR. For safety requirements, openings like windows should be regulated to be at least 90-110 cm off the ground, depending on the country. This is to ensure no child can climb and accidentally fall through. Not to mention that that lift is NOT safe. It shouldn’t close that fast. Safety features are, unfortunately, often overlooked for the sake of aesthetics, especially when an accident seems unlikely to happen.
It’s China. These kinds of buildings are everywhere! There’s a lack of building regulations, which is why Ai Wei Wei called the government out on it and he ended up getting arrested / tortured. If you want to find the sole problem, it’s the government

Exactly what I thought about that Elevator. It closes so fast that I couldn't imagine if multiple people are riding that Elevator then the next person would have to wait or will get squeezed by the automatic door, then opens again.

it says the lift stayed at the first floor for 30 seconds (can also be seen in the video). more than enough time to push the button and open it if the nanny had realised.which she didn't. it's pure negligence

That’s the fault of the nanny she should to hold the hand of the little kid than the scooter its because the little kid can’t be trusted of thier action specially in the elevator or escalator or even the sorrounding. The father had nothing to do with the child falling down, by the time he opened the window which allowed him to find her, the child had already been there for 45 minutes; she fell 45 minutes before the father opened the window. So obviously you did not understand the Video at all.
Also, it clearly is the nannys fault, its her job to ensure the child is safe, she is not supposed to leave the child in an elevator on its own. This woman cared more about her Phone than about the child she was supposed to take care of, how tf can you say its not her fault?! She also took way too long to tell the parents.
Edit: sure the building should be built safer and children shouldnt be able to reach the Windows but still this danger wouldnt matter if the nanny actually did her job and took care of the child.

I'm not even a nanny and when I'm around children I cannot take my eyes off them. Children do impossible things and can hurt themselves EASILY. You need to be severely responsible around them at ALL TIMES.

The father said she was still breathing because the nanny would tell him where to look. There’s a possibility if she had told the truth he could have gotten to her quicker. These situations time is of the essence and he didn’t even get that.

Poor girl, she probably didn't understand the concept of an elevator. She just saw doors close, the nanny vanish, and then them reopen, so she obviously went looking for her not knowing she was on a different floor and also not realising she was high up, so peered out the window. I really hope the father is staying strong out there.

I remember being that age and being able to understand that elevators took you up and down because I could feel it moving. I think we downplay a toddler's intelligence sometimes. Her panic could've been that she simply didn't know how to go back.

She gave us rules. #1 We always held on to her belt and never let go when walking around or crossing busy streets. She was always carrying a lot of stuff thats why. She was a teacher. #2 We always walked in front of her and in arms distance. #3 She made sure that my brother and I always kept an eye on each other. Never separating. #4 If we played in public, she made sure she never lost sight of us. She was a hawk. Im 38 now and I thanked her for her sacrifice.

My mom always told me the same. When my little sister was born, she put even more emphasis on it.
My little sister is now 7 years old and we've done it so much it became now an instinct to always put her in front of us so we can see well where she is and what she is doing.
I don't think I'll loose this instinct even when she's older.
And to think that it may have saved her life more than we must've realized...

I physically felt sick when I saw how she cried, and then my stomach dropped when they mentioned the 8th floor. The fact she was still alive when the dad found her makes me think of the amount of pain she endured. @@yogap6162 if a person is loose and limber (as in, not all tensed up) sometimes they can survive, but in this case the height was too great, and tragically the child died.
This is just my theory. She might not have been aware she was going to die. Although its also a fact that even infants have a fearful reaction to a sudden dropping sensation.

I really do think, after only 7 days on the job, she didn’t have the experience to know how dangerously fast these elevator doors closed. They closed way too fast to be safe. People are scaling like she left the kid alone for a long time; she didn’t, it was a split second. Obviously the question is, was there a display and did she see that it went to the 8th floor, and in what way did she “lie” to the father? When you are panicked you are not thinking clearly. This all happened so fast and the real problem is a window low enough for a small child to climb out of. Those windows were an accident waiting to happen. And this whole situation could’ve easily happened to the father as well when he was with the child, except for the fact that he had the experience with these elevators to know how fast they closed. He wants someone to blame because he is destroyed by this. It’s so strange to fight for higher standards for nannies when he should be fighting for windows to be installed higher.

Not a very honest mistake. There’s so many reasons why. Even though the little girl’s hand was on the scooter, she should have held it more tightly. And even let the child out before she went out. I’m not even a mother, but with my little sisters I always make sure to hold their hand wherever we go, especially if we’re leaving an elevator or doorway or something. I also make sure they’re walking in front of me while I hold their hand so that I can see them, too.
The doors closed quickly, though, so let’s say that was a mistake. But after the doors closed, it says the elevator was on the floor for over 30 seconds. Unless this elevator has some weird design where pressing the button doesn’t re-open the doors right away, it should’ve opened if she pressed the button. 99% of elevators do re-open the doors when you press it, even if someone on another floor calls for it. Also if you press it right away, it should open back up, because you pressing the button immediately takes priority over the electrical signal when pressing the button from another floor (if someone had called the elevator around the same time).
Not only could she have opened the door, the most important part is that the girl wasn’t found until 40 minutes later. 40 minutes is a LONG TIME to not know where a child is (unless they’re safely in your home or something). Especially if you’re being paid to watch someone else’s kid!! How did she not go searching for the girl in those 40 minutes but the father found her right away? Was she just messing with her phone again for those 40 minutes?
She also said the girl “might have been” on the 8th floor. How did she not go and check right away if that was the case? Apparently the nanny also lied to the father about why Cherry was left in the elevator. There’s too many factors at play, so the negligence charge does not seem unwarranted here.

Not that it is any comfort, but she reunites with her father before falling asleep. Hopefully she felt safe in her father's arms and made her death not as scary.

I'm crying. I'm single, but I can't nor do I ever want to image how it feels to experience it. I remember when my older siblings was playing with their infant n while I was lying on my stomach they sneaked on me and placed my niece on my back n then saw them walking in front of me. My older siblings wife and me got a heartache cuz I wasn't prepare to know how to move in case my niece fell on her face and don't fall on the couch but on the ground cuz I made a wrong move.

lack of building safety, the windows is to lower. it no problem if lift door to fast close, and nanny do not have time to react, 1st to blame is building safety, 2nd is nanny, not focus on the baby girl, i always carry or sit on me less than 4 year old baby on lift, elevator and boat.

My neighbor’s grandma accidentally left their two-year-old daughter in the elevator. I live in an upper floor and just happened to press the button at the perfect time and managed to pull her out of the elevator and return her home. When I found her in the elevator, she was crying exactly like this girl. It was a very scary experience. You absolutely have to hold the elevator door until you see the kids go out.

Never trust those elevator doors, some sensors don't work and they will shut, even with you in between. Hold your baby's hand or better yet, hold your baby. That baby is so lucky to have run into you.
I agree with HOLDING a child’s hand. It’s a lot like crossing the street with them. Because some elevators have been known-very rare but still-of people walking off elevators and falling because there’s no floor to walk into or vice versa, walking into an elevator but there’s actually no lift, just the doors open.
So even myself, as an adult always look before blindlessly stepping onto elevators, or off. With a baby, hold their hands…don’t let them lead or walk without your guidance. They literally don’t know anything about this world.
So sad this poor man had no clue he’d hire someone who’d change his life for the worse.
Hold their hand, please, because they can go all over the place at any moment...just like crossing an intersection...always hold their hand until they are in safety...then you can let go if they are a responsible child that usually follows instructions.

I think that's mostly just something the father's is saying out of his pain, he needs to find someone to blame. They didn't say what the nanny told them. Probably something along the lines that the girl got trapped in the lift, so they were trying to find her near the lift.... She didn't have any way to know that she went to the 8th floor and fell to her death from a random window

The thing with this accident that makes it so unbelievably tragic is the fact that there are so many things that just aligns for this accident to happen. If one of these things didn't happen, she would probably be alive now.
1. The nanny paying no mind to the child. That's literally her main job and that's what she's expected to do.
2. The elevator door closing so quickly. I suspect that the door doesn't have any sensor on it and it's set to automatically close after a set amount of time. If this elevator had sensors, it would've detected the scooter in the way and would've held open for a few seconds longer to let the kid go out or for the nanny to realize that the kid is still in the elevator.
3. The nanny not immediately pressing the elevator button after the door closes to try to reopen the door. I don't know if the nanny tried and the lift malfunctions or some sort, but that would've definitely prevented the accident from happening.
4. The elevator going to a different floor. The kid definitely didn't press the button to go to a different floor, and the nanny definitely can't make the lift go to a different floor. If nobody had called for a lift in a different floor, the lift would've stayed at the same floor and can probably be opened manually or something.
5. The elevator going to a floor where there's nobody in sight. If an adult was waiting for the lift at the eight floor, that adult could report the missing kid to the authorities and reunite the kid with her nanny and her father.
6. The elevator going to a floor where a window just happens to be open. If the window wasn't open, then she probably would've just wandered around and maybe encounter a responsible adult.
7. The elevator going to a floor where it's high enough to have a lethal fall. If the elevator went to the ground floor or a low floor, then regardless of an open window the kid would've had a better chance of surviving a fall.
8. The fact that nobody found the kid lying on the floor for 40 minutes. 40 minutes is a lot of time and if somebody just happens to be around the area and heard the fall, the cry, or even passed by the kid by accident, she could've had a better chance to survive.
A lot of these things could've easily happened differently and prevented the worst from happening, and yet here we are.
Yeah why did the lift go to the 8th floor? Normally it'll only go there if someone pressed the button for it, right? So where was the person, and how come they didn't say hey what's this child doing in an elevator by herself

@@brimmed Chances are there were probably 2 lifts, the person on the 8th floor pressed the buttons on both lifts but the other lift came faster, so they got in that lift, which is probably why no one was there when she got to the 8th floor

@@brimmed There are systems where each button only corresponds to the elevator right beside it. So imagine two elevators with two buttons each, where each button only calls for one of the elevators. People often press both buttons just in case that the other is faster/closer at some point. So someone probably pressed both buttons, the other elevator arrives quicker, and he gets on that elevator while the other button is still on and it's still calling for the other lift.

@@opo3628 i've been doing fine with mine. Even caught one of them while he tripped walking normally on street and almost hit his head on the border. But this is what i mean, to prevent stuff like this i would have to never let the childs hand go. A week back one of them lost his balance on the couch and hit himself on the corner of the eye. He was fine in 30 seconds, healed itself in 2-3 days. Done. Should i live only on fluffy pillows from now on?!
And stuff is going to get more dangerous as they age, am i going to protect them every second of their life? Then when they are of age they will be tied with an umbilical cord to me? The only thing you can do is set rules and boundaries and hope that they don't overstep them too much. Thankfully i see a majority of parents doing exactly like this, instead of overprotecting their children.

I bent down to pick one up for him ... and he had vanished. I couldn’t believe it. At first I figured he’d been snatched but a woman said he’d bolted straight out the shop. We located him 200 metres away on the other side of the carpark.
You don’t have to be distracted by a mobile phone to lose a child. I think almost every parent has a story of a kid that has got clear away. My mother put me in a train when I was about 4 and was about to load the pram with her other child, when the train simply moved off. The passengers in the train held me in and later somehow managed to reunite me with my (frantic) mother.
I feel great pity for the father, but I also feel sorry for the nanny. The lift doors closed very quickly, and then there was a window left open in the high rise building. It seems like no one had any luck in this story.

The most heart wrenching part of this is her being alone in the elevator, obviously the fall is terrible but the steel door closing so mechanically leaving the toddler all alone only for her to panic and scream as she realizes she has no way out, im not surprised she was drawn to a window after such a claustrophobic experience
it is 40cm above low still the toddler is too easy to climb up . If the security guard have seen the elevator cctv (in which it should be installed in every building security system) during the time maybe he can somehow saved the girl before she did the thing.

I have adhd and asperger's syndrome when I was young I am 28now . The girl is really scared being left alone. I had horrify moments when I was as a 4 or 5 year kid I lost my auntie sight in a crowdy place which deeply burns in my head, I was scared and asked a baker shop help they are so kind to let me use phone to dial home number (in which my family taught me that number) .
Everytime I walk with my girlfriend or friend in crowdy place I say hold my hands please don't let me off-sight cos I'm actually quite scared of crowdy, big festival places

His mother and his aunty were not fast enough to catch him. Then it went to 7th floor, and he went out to look for his mother. It ended tragically when he fall to his death. This show when you with a child, you really have to be extra vigilant. Anything can happen. Rest in peace little one. Her cries in the lift break my heart.
yea for some reason children jump out of windows or balconies. when we were children my brother almost jumped off a 7th floor balcony because he was playing spiderman, my mother didn't realize that children do that and would leave the door open for us to go in & out.. she happened to come by and see him about to leap off, she kept her cool and snuck up behind him and grabbed him, after that the door was locked. the windows at the condo in the video are terrible-totally not child proof, the ones in the hall in my building open too but the open part is much higher and harder to crawl out of.

When I was 6 years old I was riding my own bike to school and rollerblading around my neighborhood. A6 year old should know better then to do something like that. Parents need to teach their children common sense.

She lied in pain for 40 minutes, each part of her body burning and aching like never before, a 2 year old doesn't deserve this. Please look after your children, get trustworthy people to take care if your kids when you're not around, what a precious soul we lost that day. RIP cherry

Really? I was told that when the body was damaged to the point beyond the mind can take, the brain will stop translate the pain in order to keep its life.
I've never experienced such a fall so Idk what it feels but it could also be possible that she just laid there feeling 'notining' at all. Lifelessly laid there, yet still breathing.
This is sad beyond repair. Nothing is more tragic than for a Father to lose his little angel. Enough to drive you crazy.

@@IsaganiPumar the soul is never the same. The dad loved that daughter and that daughter is not the same as any children in this world. Sure, he can have another one but that don't heal the scar the dad have. The new one doesn't replace the dead one.

It's so painful to watch her cry like this I stopped where she was frightened and crying as a father of two I couldn't get enough courage to go through her cry even in the video.
