    I have just started on an adventure with vintage lenses, used wide open some are not that sharp but produce some amazing bokeh, i think we get hung up to often trying to produce crisp sharp images. Digital photography i feel is like a cd, clinical and no soul sometimes, where as using my older lenses i have bought is like a fine LP, with all its pops and crackles, either way you are producing art and to be honest thats all that matters

    Hi Kim, I,ve been doing macro for a few months now. My 100mm macro doesn't have IS and my camera doesn't have IBIS, so its all tripod for me. For hand held macro you need IS on the lens or both IBIS & IS!. Great video.

    There are two things I have found really practical when doing macro photography of flowers, or other small things on the ground: a bean bag to rest the camera on, and a cheap camping mattress to rest myself on.
    When I find something I want a macro shot of, I roll out the mattress in a suitable place, and then lie down on it, with the bean bag in front of me and the camera on the bean bag. This way the camera won't move unless I move it myself, making something like focus stacking a matter of focusing somewhere and then moving the camera slightly forward/back to move the point of focus.
    This way, I don't need a tripod for macro work, and I can still get sharp pictures without unintentional motion blur from me not being able to hold the camera steadily enough.

      @@aoc8548 Just a word on the bean bag: although it is called bean bag, I think actually filling it with beans would be a mistake! I stole some sand from a local beach and used this for my bean bag. It makes the bag a bit heavy, so I tend to leave it at home. If you can find some lighter material than sand you might want to try that instead. I have been looking for something other than sand, but the only possibly practical solution I have found ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuse_beads ) is a bit too expensive for my taste, although it should work.

    Don't get hung up on a tripod. I have used my foot or legs as I sit cross legged. Use a neck strap tensioned around your neck, shoulder ,or arm. I've used my hat, rocks, trail mix bags, also don't forget the bag on your back and sticks on the ground.
    Another thing, don't look down on your subject get low and look up. some dirt won't kill you.

    Thank you for your inspiring videos! I find them most educational since I too use a Z6 and I have the Macro 105 mm too. Question: I see you use your lens hood on just about all you lenses. Can you share the advantage of that. I thought using them on overcast days would cut the light into the lens. Thanks again.

    I been doing macro stuff on & off for years and I've always struggled with it. But the best luck I had with macro photography was when I had a crop sensor camera because of the larger depth of field with the smaller sensor. When I switched back to full frame and also have the MC 105, the depth of field is so incredibly shallow that you need to stop down a ton and pump the ISO up or focus stack and honestly, I just can't be bothered to focus stack hahahaha even though the Nikon Z cameras can do it automatically. I'm just not THAT into macro photography but it's fun sometimes to experiment with it. One complaint I have about the Z cameras is that we don't have a screen to view vertically and I often take a lot of macros in portrait orientation and not having a variable angle screen kinda sucks haha especially when you had one prior. I had the Fujifilm XT4 + Laowa 65 - Good macro setup there.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts Nicholas. I agree - not having a vertical screen really annoys me sometimes but then I remember my old DSLR didn't have a flip screen. Hopefully one day they'll change this. Brilliant cameras otherwise!

    nice images. my favourite lens of all-time is my micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8G. I shoot it on an old Nikon D700 and love the results the lower MP sensor gives me.
    One thing though. Never, ever, ever do your culling in the field, no matter how poor an image is. Just take more memory with you. You not only run the risk of losing an image that looks a bit "meh" on your rear screen but which might look wonderful enlarged, but you also have a very very small risk of corrupting a card and losing your whole day.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Brilliant to hear you enjoy macro. Oh, I don't delete in the field, it was when I was reviewing them on the computer that I was going to delete the image in question. Great tip though! I'd agree 👍🏻

    Welcome to the wonderful world of macro. I’m getting back into this as I near retirement. One of the things I’ll be trying is to use my telephoto zoom to capture close up images with a tripod ( or not!?). May not be true macro, but I have seen some cool images. Also considering a simple diffused flash set up to maybe get a faster shutter speed. The best lesson is get out and practice and don’t fear failure as you demonstrated so well. You do have some lovely shots in that video.

    Last week I made a "Schoolboy Error" of a mistaken opportunity.
    I went out to play at my local park with my new Panasonic Prime 200mm f2.8 lens for my micro four thirds camera, hoping to catch the local wildlife fighting for a bit of water so that the lady birds would be their friend.
    Guess who forgot SD cards and batteries?

    Flower photography is something that I didn't make a conscious decision to focus on - at least, not for a long time. I'm happy that fate drew/pushed me in this direction, though, because it's a fabulous context for being mindful and allowing my mind to relax away from the problems of the day and life in general.

      Thank you Roy. There was no movement when taking these images but the shallow depth of field creates a blurring effect. Early morning light for macro when the air is still is generally better than the afternoon light. Once the wind picks up, then dont try flowers, but move on to bark and the like that is not affected by the wind blowing

    Hi Kim, I enjoy all your videos which teach me a lot. I love this genre and find a well diffused flash helps with macro, I use a Yongnuo speedlight which works well and is affordable, they are camera specific for Canon and Nikon. They also sell affordable simple flash triggers for 'off camera' flash.

    Good video! It definitely takes some practice getting to grip with good macro, but it's a lot of fun. There's a field with poppies and other mixed wildflowers at the edge of Portgordon, that's great in summer to do macro in... highly recommended location for you!
    I'm newish to it too, and I've been following Dirk Ercken training for dreamy flower macro photography and it's yielding some amazing results. One thing he taught is to get soft light on the flowers so there is no hard shadows, as petals are translucent and show shadows through them from behind too. He uses a diffuser above to soften the sun light. In practice I have to agree with this. I can't wait to get out and practice it more again!

My own are very different from most people and quite personal to me, but the end result is for my own wellbeing and mental health like so many others.
