This Is much more of a fan's classic than a critic's classic it may not have a strong influence on the sound of hip hop, but it definitely has an extreme influence on the greater hip hop fandom

i think it had a pretty big impact on hiphop, not mainstream rap. look at westside gunn, conway, crimeapple, al.divino, all these dudes in the underground blew up in the wake of this album

There’s a sample. BJ sings the hook but there’s still a sample in the hook.
Timeless record, was slowly getting into rap right around when this album came out and the more styles of rap i've listened to over the years the more I appreciate how well crafted this thing is.

His still consistent and killing it. As long as the fan base he currently has still supporting he is good. Not every artist has to break into the main stream.

Gibbs had many moments on Piñata when his rhymes would display such self aware and brutal honesty, which IMHO Broken showed that strength at its greatest alongside Scarface’s verse and Madlibs signature SP1200 styled Watery sample flip. Overall I’m just grateful for the experience of cinematic drug rap at a time where Trap and Soundcloud rap was breeding in the underground.

This album has aged beautifully
Interesting as you said how this album didn't really 'influence' rappers or start a new wave but that kinda makes it even more distinctive. Ridiculous replay value and I just love the contrast of Freddie's aggressive, blunt rapping over Madlib's sugary, dreamy beats. I can't think of any other hip-hop albums that sound like Piñata, it's gotta be up there among the best of the decade.

This is a great idea if you’re planning to make this a reoccurring series. No matter how high quality your reviews are i’m sure there are always things you didn’t get to talk about or put into words by the time the video is due to go up. 5 years is a solid amount of time to keep thinking on it.
‘Uno’ has the best best of all time on it (along with some other Alchemist ones) it’s so timeless, and genuinely will never be topped.

It's crazy, I've been blazing to this album cause it got me through some shitty days last year and it didn't even occur to me this album turned five until I saw this video. Just goes to show you how timeless this project really is

I remember listening to this album on repeat when I was in high school, even tho the album isnt THAT old I still feel somewhat nostalgic when I listen to it nowadays. Good times.

Classic. This album actually made me a fan of Gibbs. I used to hear him on other songs before it dropped but never really paid attention to him. When it dropped and I heard it was with Madlib, I decided to give it a listen and knew it was a great album the day I heard it.

Had no idea it turned 5 recently, I just listened to it for the first time in a few years a couple days ago and it still holds up very well. I'm honestly not that big of a fan of Freddie Gibbs when it comes to his more trap sounding albums, but being a huge Madlib fan it makes this album nearly a masterpiece
