Still no Dark Prog starter pack, what a phony.
King Crimson, the original dark prog.
@Jon it refers to prog. made by black people
still no sleepy music starter pack smh my head
gregory horror show~
@@lokuendog The bands War and Funkadelic are consider "black prog" by some critics back in those days
Ghosts of the Great Highway is one of my favorite albums of all time. Anthony is the one who introduced me to Sun Kil Moon and I appreciate him for it!
Hey, here's one folk album that you also need to listen to - Pink Moon by Nick Drake.
I think "Bryter Layter" may fit the category better but I do think Nick Drake is pretty much required listening as far folk-rock is concerned.
This record is one of my favourites of all time. Such a good mix of that "regal" folk and elements of folk that are still echoing in modern folk/folk pop. Hell yes to Nick Drake.
First thing i thought of when i didnt see it on here
Not a folk "rock" album
It's just folk, not rock
Don't miss out on these ones also:
The Band - Self-titled
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy and the poor boys
Angel Olsen - My Woman
The Grateful Dead - American Beauty
The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn!
I haven't taken the time to delve into classic folk, but I can vouch for the Angel Olsen pick. Consistently interesting and affecting records that evoke primitivistic urges (i.e. lust, mindless restlessness) at least in me. One of my favorites from her is "Woman," which rests at a lengthy 7 minute commitment, but the composition keeps you interested until this end.
American Beauty is a masterpiece
Don’t start with Turn Turn Turn. Go for Mr Tambourine man, Notorious Byrd Brothers, Fifth Dimension, or Younger Than Yesterday.
@@stonecole4703 younger than yesterday is my favourite by them
half of those aren't even folk rock bruh
Can’t go wrong with Neil or Dylan when it comes with folk rock
'Ghosts of the Great Highway' is one of the best albums in the last 25 years. Truly exceptional.
so amazing
@@park7854 top 10 album ever
Yup. Pretty much all Red House Painter LP's are underrated as hell too.
I'm so glad that you included that Sun Kil Moon record. What an incredible album.
I am glad the pogues made it on this list They are so underrated
Deja Vu - Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Great album if you haven’t heard it
Starter pack ideas:
Industrial rock
Experimental
Trip Hop
Indie
Post punk (part 1 & 2)
Alternative/2000s rock
Progressive rock
Contemporary hip hop
R&B
Electronica
Doom metal
Latin music
Classic Rock
Thrash metal
Punk
Classic heavy metal
Funk
Dream pop
Grunge
A dream pop one would be cool. Other than Slowdive and Beach House I'm not too familiar with the genre
Industrial Metal
Melodic Death Metal
Blackened Death Metal
I’m just getting into 2000s alternative rock so a better guide to it would be helpful
@@florida_mane6267 I'm fairly certain you've heard of the the XX, but if you haven't, you should give their discography a listen.
Industrial would be awesome. Just started listening to some Ministry, and dont know how the heck i missed them before
After The Goldrush is a great album, it always feels more like a collection of ditties than some of Neil’s other albums. I think “On The Beach” leans even more toward folk, especially on the second side. It’s an incredible album experience.
On the beach is still my fav Neil album.
'Brockhampton will bring back thatistheplan' starter pack
Holy shit your probably right
Anderson Paak.
Genres you should do a starter pack video on:
-sleepy music
-dark prog
-mustard rap
Mustard rap?
its joke
@TheCommentGuy makin fun of microgenres
@TheCommentGuy
It was a Let's Argue or something where someone got mad that when rappers have bars about mustard they just stick to one particular mustard brand.
@TheCommentGuy Yeah that's what it was.
No love for my boy Jim Croce?
if you don't know Stan Rogers I recommend him
“You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” is one folk banger after another and I will rep Jim Croce till I die.
@@CapnSkippy I'll definitely give him a listen
Right?! I love Jim Croce
I've never actually even heard him talk about Jim Croce
im so glad you recommended ghosts of the great highway... wonderful record
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Hello there
bold
If what you say is true then you will have gained my trust
Some other Great Picks are:
The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd brothers
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Deja Vu
The Band - Music from the Big Pink
Richard and Linda Thompson - I want to see the Bright lights Tonight
Rodriguez - Cold Fact
Some of these id consider country rock
@@EH-bg1yo Country rock influences. I'd consider these are "folk rock". lol
Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969) is the quintessential folk rock album. Pink Moon by Nick Drake is a sleeper hit that everyone needs to hear, as well.
I would say Dylan's Blood on the tracks is the greatest Folk Rock album of all time.
Anthony makes me pene hurt but I like it
So happy to see "How I loved you" and "Ghosts of the Great Highway" here, they're both underrated albums in my opinion.
Tony’s in the basement mixing up the melons
Idk if that's a Mac DeMarco reference or something else
@@JBloise I thought he was referencing Lime in the coconut
Wow that hurt me to read. Bob Dylan reference bro
@@patriciofernandez2711 what Dylan song is that?
@@patriciofernandez2711 Don't worry, I also thought that, but I had to ask
Where is Harverd Dropout
And I don’t mean the review, why is Harverd Dropout not on this list
Not folky enough
Harverd Dropout is the only album in history that works in any genre
Harverd Dropout is not only the best folk album, it basically started folk music .
@@renapeppers20 too folky
@@renapeppers20 wooooooshh
YES MORE STARTER PACKS! I find stuff like this the most helpful and accessible for discovering music
The starter pack I was waiting on just to feel validated.
I know little to nothing about this genre other than Bob Dylan so it was very interesting to get some recommendations
@@florida_mane6267 Kurt Vile is amazing start there. Especially since it would be one of the easiest imo because it is the most modern.
@@ilovecody7514 thanks! will do
I feel like Iron and Wine got criminally left out. It's a bit more indie folk than 100% folk, but I feel as though he revived folk for the 2000's. Also, he's fucking magnificent live
Here are some other folk rock recommendations:
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (2004)
Elliott Brood - Mountain Meadows (2008)
Smog - Knock Knock (1999)
Crooked Fingers - Red Devil Dawn (2003)
Greg MacPherson Band - Night Flares (2005)
Nap Eyes - Thought Rock Fish Scale (2016)
Richard Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights (1982)
Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics (1990)
Def needed this. I got into folk music last year by rediscovering Marissa Nadler's music. I love her so much!
Songs: ohia should definitely be on here
Neil Young worst to best?
MP13 considering Neil young has almost 40 studio albums (not including live, CSNY records, etc.) I don’t see this happening
Perhaps a 60’s-80’s Neil young list would be more doable lol
best: Zuma
worst: Everybody's Rockin'
honeypot Zuma is a great choice. I’m gonna cheat and pick a live album Live at Massey Hall 1971 lol. Always my go to next to 4 Way Street from CSNY
On The Beach super underrated
America self titled LP, Jim Croce’s greatest hits, James Taylor - Sweet Baby James...
I'd have included:
Van Morrison - Moondance
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers
The Band - Self-titled
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Steeleye Span: Below the Salt. Woodbine and Ivy Band: Sleep On Sleeping On. Al Stewart: Orange. Offa Rex: The Queen of Hearts. Donovan: Open Road. Proclaimers: Sunshine On Leith. Eliza Carthy and the Kings of Calicutt. Laura Marling: I Speak Because I Can. Cat Stevens: Catch Bull At Four. Jethro Tull: Songs From The Wood. The Owl Service: The View From A Hill. And also by Fairport Convention: Babbacombe Lee.
No Astral Weeks? I'm very disappointed in you melon. I don't think I can ever watch your videos anymore because of this.
Dude, no joke my mom used to play Van Morrison all the time when I was a kid and you just reminded me of that. Thanx :)
I think Moondance is more suitable
I'd say Astral Weeks is more classic "folk", or even chamber folk/jazz.
i found that album for the first time about a week ago its great
Not really a folk rock album.
@@fightcentral8262 It's so good. That album is freaking therapy to me. I don't how many times I've been feeling anxious or just overall shitty and then put Madame George on to instantly get relaxed and more hopeful for the future.
Townes van Zandt mention in 35 seconds... I love you Melon
I've been trying to get into more Folk Rock, bless you melon tonin
Hayden - “Everything I Long For” is a very under appreciated melancholic 90s folk rock album
These starter pack videos are fantastic ! an Industrial Rock starter pack would be wonderful
Hell ya, Fairport Convention. Heard them on my local college radio station a year or two ago and fell in love.
ROLK FOCK
Glad to see Bookends, one of my all-time favorites for sure
Glad you at least gave a shoutout to British Folk Rock with Fairport, that's my favorite type of folk rock. Here's my British Folk Rock starterpack for anyone interested:
End of A Holiday - Fairport Convention
Now We Are Six - Steeleye Span
Ghosts - The Strawbs
Cruel Sister - Pentangle
The Tain - The Horslips
Led Zeppelin III - Led Zeppelin
Argus - Wishbone Ash
Is led zep 3 really very british? I remember it being mostly american country influenced
After the gold rush is a masterpiece on every level
Bring this back!
I really love these videos! Especially the synthpop and golden age hiphop ones. Would you consider tackling current hip hop/rap, post punk, ska, and blues? I'm really liking these videos regardless of genre so keep it up!
Anything by Daniel Johnston, thank you.
he's not really entry level ate
Outsider music starter pack.
He's nut super folky really, the only folk connection you could make is that he plays an acoustic guitar and sings sad songs sometimes
Some of his music I love, and some I just can’t get into. It really depends on the album.
Rest in peace.
love these videos❤️
CSN is my favourite on this list, one of my favourites of all time
I’m so glad this series exists
No Leonard Cohen?
Love these Starter Packs, keep em comming
is this the new deep cuts video?

Bookends is one of the greatest records ever
This makes me so happy! I love me some Folk.
This is a cool series, starter packs!
Happy to see The Angels of Light on the list, good album pick too.
Love these vids melon
Really love these starter packs Fantano
More Pogues please and thank you.
I was hoping you'd mention Ghosts of the Great Highway in this list and I was very satisfied, probably my favorite from Kozelek.
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS, MELON
Please do more of these!
Great collection of folk rock classics, Anthony! I know you're not really a fan, but I couldn't help thinking that American Beauty by the Grateful Dead would make a nice addition to this list. Lots of very pleasant and memorable cuts on that record, such as Box of Rain, Friend of the Devil, Ripple, and Brokedown Palace (one of the best folk songs of all time, in my opinion). Figured I'd throw in my two cents, so there ya go! Keep up the great work buddy!
Oliver from Deep Cuts is back from his hiatus!!!
Flat baroque and berserk by Roy harper is another essential folk album
Yesssss, I fucking love the Pogues! I’m so happy to see it here!
I was thinking about how much i love the pogues yesterday. Rum sodomy and the lash is probably in my top 5 ever albums
The Pogues were phenomenal
Yay been thinking about this genre
Please do more of these!!!!!
Alt-right sleep-hop starter pack when
Trip Hop Hip
new calassic
Good stuff - I'd also add 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell and 'Workingman's Dead' by the Grateful Dead to the list. Good shout on Angels of Light too!

Pleasantly surprised to see Kurt Vile on here, that album is dreamy.
Good recommendations! I'd also recommend Cat Stevens. Catch a Bull at Four and Tea for the Tillerman are classics.
4 way street by CSNY is an essential live album too. It's one of my favorite live albums ever
I'd really like to see what you'd pick for a black metal starter pack.
Owen W he’d have to put sunbather on there and he’d probably put mayhems debut album, bathory’s blood fire death, emperors debut and maybe burzums debut also or one of the first three black metal albums of darkthrone
I didn’t like black metal until I listened to Mayhem’s debut so maybe that will be there, and probably Burzum’s Filosofem
As far as UK folk/rock/punk goes, The Levellers - A Weapon Called The Word/Levelling The Land/Zeitgeist, one of the most loathed UK bands of 90s (at least by music press, alongside Cardiacs), anarchopunk slant of Zounds with some fantastic instrumentation, it might sound a bit quaint and poppy if you're used to the "alternative" folk, but honestly, just listen to Men-An-Tol, Belaruse, Fifteen Years, it's a perfect combo of British punk, rock, a hint of psychedelia (like on This Garden and Three Friends). 90s as fuck, still going at it and magnificent live.
Please continue this series
I'd love to see more vids like this
Surprised there was no mention of the byrds as they were arguably one of the first groups to create the folk rock sound
With Fairport Conv. I'm more partial to "Unhalfbricking" and really recommend Sandy Denny or Richard Thompson's solo work.
Anthony, Thanks for turning me on...
to these artists...
This is a such a cool idea!
shout out to the levellers, classic folk rock band
I'd call the third Velvet Underground record a (borderline) folk rock record, as well as the second self-titled Bowie record, both released in 1969. Also Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter.
Just another diamond day is amazing as well
Anthony it's so crazy that you invented meme reviews.
Listen to “The Band” they are a canadian treasure
Fuck yes! I had a HUGE folk and folk rock phase recently so this was satisfying
YES! MORE STARTER PACKS PLS!
Some good suggestions But, a "Folk-rock" starter pack w/o The Beatles or The Byrds? Dylan and their 1964-5 output is what the genre is based on. This list tends to conflate "Folk-Rock" with the "Singer-Songwriter" genre. There is certainly much crossover (and all genres are subjective anyway), but I think there is room for a distinction between the two. "Folk-rock" music should at least sound as if it was an arrangement based on a trad. tune (i.e. existing before/outside "the industry" passed down generations). For example The Byrd's "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" and The Beatles "Things We Said Today" and "I've Just Seen A Face". We know these songs are varying degrees of traditional/original, but they all sound like they could have been arranged from trad. songs.
Side note: I consider Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" the place where the "Singer-Songwriter" genre begins to delineate from "Folk-Rock". And, artist like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, CSN, and Leonard Cohen owe more to its aesthetic/conceit than his previous albums.
I know the Beatles are so popular it is a little redundant to recommend them in a "starter pack". But, if someone doesn't know this genre, realizing a lot of Beatles songs were part of its origins, could be a good jumping off point.
Also, Tim Hardin, Lovin' Spoonful, and Buffalo Springfield (instead of Neil or CSN). Also, the much maligned and there for overlooked Gordon Lightfoot.
I grew up on Fairport Convention visiting the Cropredy festival every year. Gotta say it's pretty spooky seeing the Melon talk about them.
Just what i need
America? Can't complain with your choices, I just always think of America's Ventura Highway when it comes to Folk Rock.
Speaking of Folk Rock.... review Julia Jacklin's "Crushing".
As a Southerner, After The Gold Rush is pure Southern gold
if you want more traditional irish folk just look for the song on raglan road by luke kelly
incredible song
Yeah, just what we needed
Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is the perfect electric folk album and is rivaled only by Highway 61 Revisited as my favorite folk album ever
Deja Vu and Highway 61 are folk 'rock' albums, not straight folk. If anything they're more rock than folk. For example, Tombstone Blues is a pretty heavy blues rock song.
@@paranoidplane9799 4 years ago damn. And yeah I’d probably agree that they’re more rock than folk but I think both albums still count as folk in my eyes. Highway 61 Revisited more so than Deja Vu
The new Amigo the Devil album Everything is Fine is a pretty good gothic, folk rock album. Same feel as an Angels of Light album in term of mood and atmosphere
