What a great album from The new king of R&B
Freddie would be the king of soul too, but I heard he's selling that separately

@@NotJunyaWatanabe - Although not very original apparently.
Melon, You can’t give this a 10 because you can relate to Freddie selling his soul.
Or because he's jealous of Freddie afterall he's the more handsome baldy
Actually, the title is in reference to him not selling his soul. It’s his first major label release, but it was on his terms. As in, if they want his soul, that shits sold separately.
yeah, and he didn't
Classic Melon W
Boooo
personally love rabbit vision. the line “a lot of shit done broke my heart, but it fixed my vision” has resonated with me really well and listen to it on the daily. solid album 😮💨
That's my Shitt!! I can totally relate!!
Might be bar of the year 💯
Ar,
Definetely the best and most memorable line of the entire album.
this was the most memorable lines ive ever heard like a life changing line
still kinda strange that gibbs didn't include singles like 4 thangs, black illuminati, gang signs, etc on this project. so many good songs in the leadup to the album would've loved to hear them incorporated into the tracklist
yeah what the hell was he thinking not adding those singles? They coudl've easily replaced pain&strife or 2 much
Agreed
Apparently they'll be on the deluxe
They would be considered loosies or b-sides in the old school, he’s done it before with Madlib. “Pinata” loosies made the deluxe, could do the same.
Yeah he should include Entregala as well
Best and most memorable line from the album: “A lot of shit done broke my heart, but fixed my vision.”
That and “mama knew I was a hustler in the stomach as a foetus” are the best lines on the album imo
Favorite song
This is the first Gibbs album I listen to and of course it has to be the one where he embraces his fursona
Listen to Bandana, you’ll love it
@@itsStawny I might as well will
@@eliasmg9144 Listen to Pinata, one of the best hip hop albums of 2010s (would be the best if Kendrick didn't exist imo)
@@eliasmg9144 piñata>>>>>>
@@eliasmg9144 Personally i think alfredo is the most quintessential freddie project. Pinata 1&2 are classics but alfredo is short but very cohesive and hits like a mack truck.
I feel like CIA is a pretty great closer lyrically. Freddie talks about wanting to retire or take a break to spend time with his family and that track really spells out his fears and motivations for feeling the need to leave. To me this record is Freddie appreciating his successes, but ultimately having to admit that he needs to give it up to focus on what’s important while he still can. Or he essentially sold his soul to get ahead, and it’s time for him to get it back.
Listen to decoded
Decoded is the last song on the album!!! Featuring Scarface!
@@prograham2222 that’s a bonus track but I consider it the last one
2:08 can we just appreciate how genuinely GREAT Melon sounded singing that vocal line
Right?? Was terrific
Can’t believe melon didn’t even mention PYS. Such a banger, easily one of the album’s best moments.
I really wanted to hear his thoughts on this song, Paul’s verse is mid but his beat is my favorite on the album (gold rings close second). I was really looking forward to a Memphis shoutout from fantano
Bruh fr
YES!
this song is so bad. sounds like a bfk left over from ten years ago
@@tayw4090 this is an awful take. Even if it did sound like BFK leftover, I wouldn’t think of that in derogatory terms.
Freddie just cannot miss
I saw some theory that the album was a concept album where Freddie had gone upstairs at a cheap casino and been shot, and the triple S hotel is like purgatory, and the album is like Freddies life flashing before his eyes or something like that. That's why all the voicemails keep asking where he is, and why Jesus' turns up
Dude zipper bags is one of my favorite produced track on this album! Kaytranada killed it!
I agree
2:09 Melon lowkey killed this
Hikey
Freddie should sample that and put it in some song😆
Did anyone else pick up on the sadness in the album. I thought that was the story. Like we were going up the casino elevator each song and you herd these voicemails from friends trying to reach Gibbs. Lower levels he’s trapping and talking drugs but as the album went on it got deeper and more depressing to where he said he was going to commit not alive. I thought it was a story about how it’s lonely at the top of the empyre. Not being able to see his kids, ex wife hates him ect ect.
That’s what I got from it too
Agreed but Freddie is no stranger to depression. He always brought up how tormented he was and is in past music but he always did it in a angry tone over up beat production. Now he’s doing it more openly over slower and sadder production. I just went to one of his shows and the guy did look genuinely happy though. He showed up 3 hours late but when he performed it look like he was having a great time.
Yeah man I've been a fan of him since Veteran, I love how creative and always evolving he is with his production whether it is All my heroes are cornballs or LP or even his ghost pop tapes.
i personally like exmilitary the best, but to each their own
@@Zach-zm6dx I wish that Zillakami EP had seen the light of day and we didn't just get a couple songs. His mix of styles reminds me a lot of those guys. Guess he couldn't find the right balance before the deadline.
Wrong video bro 😂
Feel no Pain is probably one of my fav songs of the year, what an incredible feature 🔥🚨🐐
I don't know why but I just really didnt enjoy that song. I love Anderson paak. but his verse was horrendous and monotonous. Second worst track on the album after too much imo
@@all-caps3927too much was a banger stop hating lol
I waited for this review more than the actual album 😭
naw that’s weird asf
that’s just outright sad. Formulate your own opinion for once
Waited for the review to decide if I would listen to the album or not
Alright, the dick riding has officially become crazy how tf
I'm wondering where the billy woods review is and some of these replies are crazy people so adamant to find something to yell about
You didn’t mention two of my favorite tracks smh, PYS and Blackest in the Room add a lot of depth lyrically and sonically to the project
I don’t really agree that the end song skits/transitions need to amount to something, I think they add enough character to kind of stand on their own and don’t need a tangible conclusion. I remember you feeling similarly about the transitions on Logics No Pressure but I honestly love ones like in these albums.
I guess they dont have to but it feels like they're supposed to. they were telling a story but the storyline just fades off before anything happens.
almost like there was more to it that somehow didnt make the final album
@@darkskinwhite yeah, it's almost like we are waiting for more than the music. Death Grips' always made me feel that way. I wish someone could solve the mystery about a new release date. They have to be hiding something.
@@darkskinwhite I disagree Skits and transitions on WU Tang albums were just that, Skits and transitions.
@@gabriel-uc1uz right but they were just skits, they just were there for world building. *these particular skits* I'm saying, they were telling a story, everyone was trying to get ahold of him, he invited them to the casino, all this shit is going on at the casino, everybody is there Freddie is missing and then what? nothing happens, theres no conclusion
side note, does anyone else feel like the Kevin Durant one was random? n idk maybe that's just how he talks but it seems like he phoned it in no pun, like it was just there to have another voice on the album lol
Nobody gonna talk about how good of a singer anthony is 😭 2:04
Man not sure why he left Decoded as a bonus track rather than it being on the album. One of my favs on this album, kinda serves as a better final track than CIA imo
Album is gonna be a classic. Waited so long and it delivered big time. You can feel all the past Freddie and the current course he’s on. Big win in the rap game
I can finally like this album now, thank you Anthony!
Starting with Piñata, Freddie's only been taking Ws. This is why Freddie has been my favourite rapper for the past couple of years.
Freddie easily dropping one of the best albums this year he stays one of the most consistent artists of this generation loving the vibe and versatility in this album
Back to back top 5 albums of the year 5 years in a row! First Veteran, then Bandana, Alfredo, LP! and now $$$. what a run
A freddie gibbs tier list needa be done
That's one of the best album titles I've ever seen
Anthony's tone and look in the thumbnail had me scared for a second
Really cool of you to get a haircut similar to Freddie's just for the review Anthony
I've seen a lot of people dislike too much that shit goes so hard I don't understand 😅
Actually like it a lot more than Pain and Strife or Zipper Bagz
Too much is amazing from start to finish.
@@roachybill I agree. I love that line.
Blackest in the room is my favorite song on the album, this man completely ignored talking about it lol. This is like the 4th time this has happened man, so weird. We must have opposite taste
Tell me bout it bro. When the album came out I kept playing it over and over. Every time an album comes out I go to melon’s review just to see him talk about the song just for him to not mention it
I need to see this Album Live! Thank you Madlib for introducing me to this MC 🔥
Same.
He should have paid you for that intro. You sang it perfectly!
Great album. One of my favorites this year and the three track run of Space Rabbit, Feel No Pain, and Rabbit Version is amazing.
We definitely need the rabbit version of this album
@@krunkformula 😂 I meant vision
@@kendallkhoward figured so, but I still think we need a $$$ deluxe the rabbit version 😂
CIA is the official end to the album, but I personally love Decoded much more as a closer. It easily became my favorite song from the record.
Decoded is so damn good
Yeah, "Decoded" is dope. Scarface still got it.
Surprised you didn't even mention the track Blackest in the Room or PYS which establish two completely different vibes from the album. Imo the only two tracks I wouldn't listen to regularly are Pain and Strife and Too Much. Every other song on the album is top teir excellent quality. Strong 8 to light 9.
Him not mentioning Blackest in the Room is flat out criminal lmao. I personally think it's the best song on the album and honestly one of the best songs in rap in the last decade at least. The production alone was worth a mention, let alone how smoothly Freddie flows over it. No real drums in the intro into maybe the smoothest beat-switch of all time? Extremely ballsy yet it paid off so well.
Congrats on the success Anthony, keep doing you ❤️
Bjork got a 5
Cudi got a 6
Bladee got a 7
Freddie Gibbs got an 8
Was this intentional Anthony?
pixies is either getting a 9 or a 4
That Pixies album is like a Classic Rock compilation
I think this is a 9/10 for me. Two or three songs I don’t return to but it has everything I wanted from Freddie. Couple songs that get u hype like zipper bags, too much, and PYS. And of course some more lyrical ones too. He never misses
Me too. Beside the offset feature the entire thing is incredible too me. Great production and even better lyricism. I think I’ve listened to the album back to front over 20 times. This is like the coke of coke rap albums for me, I just can’t stop playing it.
thanks anthony, i now completely hate too much where as before this interview it was my fav on the album! inspiring video!
i can’t believe how well you articulate my feelings about the anticlimactic ending of the otherwise pretty solid album
Ditto
CIA is such an underrated track tho. I know it’s not the grandest finish to what is easily Freddie’s most grand album but it’s a nice happy note to end on after the depressing grandmas stove.
Wait are you talking about Decoded ft. Scarface? Its a top 5 track on the album for me
I think you guys are isolating the songs and appreciating it from that perspective and not how it sounds collectively within the album
When he said “the project didn’t feel like it was greater than the sum of it’s parts” i paused the video and was like yes. that is exactly how i was feeling but didn’t have the words.
good job on this review Antony!
I'm actually surprised to hear you talking about his feature on "Entrégala" as one of Freddie's more forward thinking songs
is it weird that i fuck with that song?😂😂😂
It's a fire song 🔥
Hey this shit came out perfect time to rip a fat dab and see how aligned Anthony's opinions are with mine after having heard this album around 20x it's my go to workout album right now weed coffee and freddie gibbs = big gains and good vibes.
Fuck yeah!!! Sounds like a perfect life 💪🏿

Do you like weed by any chance?
Weed and coffee ...wow! What a nice combo

Great review, Anthony! Any plans on reviewing the new Slipknot album? I think it might surprise you. Is it Iowa 2? Absolutely not, but while the entire album isn't one church-burning banger after another (and even though the band itself has been adamant that the album doesn't represent their A Game), I think it's a strong and unpredictable release that exemplifies the versatility of each of the band's members both as musicians and as song writers. Give it a listen!

I definitely agree regarding the Rick Ross verse, it felt like at least one more line was needed. The production flourishes on the last segment are beautiful though, could have even lasted longer.
This album is still in my rotation. One of the best albums from 2022, and thats saying something!
I love how there are a lot of more melancholy, introspective tracks on this album than, say, Alfredo. I think the triple-run of Grandma’s Stove, CIA, and Decoded is great because of that. Sounds a lot like 90s/00s conscious rap

I feel that time is going to be EXTREMELY kind to the legacy of this album. It’ll be Gibbs’ The Eminem Show in 10-15 years.
Thank God, I can finally have an opinion on this album!
You can’t just give it an 8 cuz there’s no intro where it’s a kids commercial saying “each sold separately”
How does he have time to rap and act in John wick and comic book movies. The man's a legend

Album? Nah. Some of his mixtapes a little rough though lol
@@maxsmith5483 I definitely agree lol
Nah. He has projects which stand out but they’re all solid bodies of work in my opinion. The obvious draws are Piñata, Bandana & Alfredo…but Freddie, You Only Live Twice and Shadow Of A Doubt are great too. He has one of the best discographies in hip-hop period if we’re being honest.
@@dretheman123 definitely, shadow of a doubt is extremely underrated

Super good video anthony I loved this album and think Freddie Gibbs totally out did himself with this one the subject matter the flows the production and oh my god the Lyricism 🤯🤯 imo this is the second best rap album to drop this year the only thing topping it is Mister moral and the big steppers

Freddie one of the best because he's so versatile & always comes with a new sound yet still authentic & Freddie; every. single. time.
Maybe the reason it feels kinda lacking in the conclusion area is because the soul is sold separately and there’s going to be another project containing the conclusion 😏

Despite different opinions or controversies over your ratings I've been able to understand what do you expect from albums and how the overall quality produces your ratings. After listening to the record and half way through the video I was guessing for strong 7-light 8. I was right, you are pretty consistent with your analysis process.
