Very helpful. Been a musician for 50+ years, Guitar, Bass, Double Bass, and am a physics graduate, and this is the first time I've ever understood an explanation of temperament. Just taken up the cello.... poor neighbours.

      How is it going?

This is wonderful! I was just explaining to a (non-string-playing) musical friend of mine the nuances of tuning to fifths vs. tuning to the temperament of a keyboard instrument, and on a whim I came looking to see if there were any videos about it. What a great demonstration - thank you!

Mr. Vel, do you intend to add any further videos? All three of these were excellent; I find myself wishing for more.

I may do one on tuning a viol but it is even more complicated than tuning a cello!

Excellent information, thank you! Guitarists face the same problem, of course, and I often see guitarists (both rock and classical) trying to tune using harmonics. The guitar's fixed frets make tuning even more critical, and many instruments play sharp on stopped notes due to the added tension of pressing the string to meet the fret, so I like to extend the nut a millimetre or two to shorten the open string - presumably on the viol one corrects for this by adjusting the frets instead.

I MIGHT DO A VIDEO ON TUNING THE VIOL BUT IT IS EVEN MORE COMPLICATED THAN THE CELLO. I PUT MY GUT FRETS IN THE SAME PROPORTIONS AS A GUITAR AND DO NOT MOVE THEM. YOU CAN ADJUST THE PITCH SLIGHTLY AS ON THE GUITAR. I PUT MY FINGER VERY CLOSE TO THE FRET EXCEPT IN CHORDAL PLAYING. TUNE YOUR GUITAR USING FRETS OR A GOOD EQUAL TEMPERED TUNER

Thank you - I do believe that aiming for equal temperament on the guitar is the right way to go.

Thank you for this detailed information based on a lifetime of experience.
I am a retired engineer just beginning this wonderful instrument and the in-depth technical / mathematical aspects are much appreciated. If I ever achieve skill higher than rank amateur I will be very much pleased, but one can only begin at the beginning and hope for the best.
If I might ask a question; are there any precautions for owning a cello in a tropical humid environment to prevent damage?

I have lived in a humid tropical environment for many years. It plays havoc on wooden stringed instruments. I have had violins open up at the seams and necks dropping off in the worst cases. Generally through, the fingerboard becomes lower with the consequence that the strings or bridge then seem too high. There have been instruments for me that were better suited to the environment and these tend to be ones made in a similar climate by better makers. I have also tried carbon fiber instruments which do hold up very well but the sound might not be as good to your ears as wooden instruments. However, to come to the question - there are three options in your case: (a) get a dehumidifer. This option is expensive however. (b) keep your instrument in an air conditioned room. This will be a better and drier environment for the instrument. (c) store your instrument in its case in the lowest and coolest part of your house, usually under the bed. A cello might not fit but a violin case would.

Mr. Vel, I couldn't read the title of the book you've shown in your video. Was ist "Musical Mathematics" by Forster or another one?

Greetings. And thank you. You explained that tuning the D, G and C from the A strings will make the C noticeably flat. Does that mean that the D and G will also be flat, but just not noticeably? Thanks...

yes. tuning pure fifths makes the d and g a bit flat but noticeably on the c. i
