Finally a video captures the terror I feel whenever I have to tune my cello with the pegs. Many, many thanks for this!! I might find the courage to try again. Or I might just give up and buy some self adjusting pegs, which I really do not want to do because imagine the embarrassment of being a cellist that can't tune someone else's cello!
So glad this has helped you! Go ahead and learn to tune with the pegs--it only gets easier if you make yourself do it. Then you can reward yourself by getting those machine pegs. I have them on my instrument!
Thank you! After 8 years of playing cello in school (and not a single teacher actually teaching me how to tune with the pegs), this five minute video helped so much! I learned more in five minutes than I did in 8 years, lmao.
Thank you so much. I‘m temporarily out of a teacher because of Corona. Never learned to tune with the pegs and it was a success on the first try thanks to you!!
Posting this for my students to use as a reference while we are "remote learning." (I LOL'd VERY hard at 0:34. Very prescient.) Thanks for making such fun videos!
Thank you. Coming over from the world of guitar to Cello, I entered the nightmare world of cello tuning completely unaware of the horror that is the peg box! I now feel less of a victim and a little more confident to put the unholy mess that has just been unleased on me to rights.
I was in the exact same boat. I went to look at a used cello, having never even held one before. I tried to turn the peg to get it a bit more in tune and the peg slipped, releasing all the tension. I thought I had broken the peg! "What kind of trashy thing is this? There are no GEARS to hold it in tune?!?!" (Yes, I know this video is 3 years old and probably nobody will ever see this comment. Don't judge!)
after 4 broken strings across 2 years this video is what FINALLY taught me to use the tuning pegs. i didn’t realize how much the counter pressure on the peg box helped and just tuned 3 strings with the tuning pegs with absolutely no issues thank you!!
I've always looked with envy to BOTH violinists and bassists. Tuning the violin or viola using pegs is much, much, easier. Bassists get nice and easy metallic tuning machines. It's just the cello that's stuck in this miserable no man's land where we still must use pegs, despite the length and tension of the strings making them really impractical and uncomfortable. It's so unfair.
Thank you so much! I'm on spring break and my instrument was really out of tune and I was *horrified* to touch the tuning pegs. I watched the video and I'm all in tune! Thank you for the easy and quick explanation!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’ve been playing cello at school for four years now and have only once tried to tune my home cello using the pegs- the string snapped and I was terrified to touch the pegs again. I just completely tuned my cello with the help of your video- thank you so so much.
Thank you so, so much for this video! I started learning cello last summer (after wanting to do so for the past 20ish years) but have not been able to afford a teacher in addition to the cost of my rental instrument. Now I can finally avoid the awkwardness of showing up at the violin shop just to have them tune my cello!
Just tried tuning for the first time, I was so proud when I'd done them all and each note on the app had a big green tick - then I found whist tuning each of them the previous peg had started to unwind itself and I was back at square one Argh!!!! I'd used a couple of videos with the cellists did the side of the head thing so just thought that was how it was done. When my urge to throw the thing out of the window has passed I'll try it this way. Any tips on the best way to keep those slippery little pegs where they're supposed to be would be gratefully received. J
Jemm Bee this always happens to me too and i get extremely frustrated! I literally cry every time when my cello gets so out of tune that i have to tune it with the pegs and i can NEVER do it, i always just wait until the next lesson
I played the guitar for ten years before I took up the cello and was really surprised when I saw how the pegs worked on my cello! "Caveman" (1:11) describes it well :-D
I couldn't figure out why the other strings got lose when I was tuning the C and G. Yes, it's frustrating, but with help of this video, I learned that I must hold two fingers on the other side of the peg box. Thanks for solving the mystery. This is my first time with tuning after a year of playing a tuned instrument.
This video was VERY helpful.... not only that, this video KNOWS how scary pegs are... plus the fact I had to tune the peg my music teacher stepped on.....
Can someone help me? My A-string it not tuned (on pegs) and whenever I slowy turn the peg, my peg goes back to its original place and it's supper frustrating
I wish teachers would take more time to teach students how to tune their own cello. My own cello -which is about a century old- requires real strength to adjust the pegs.
Very helpful! I broke like 3 sittings trying to tune the thing because my fine tuners on the bottom were already too tight and it was still not high enough 😂
after 15 years of playing the cello and being afraid to tune it myself, i finally learned how to tune it with the pegs 😂 thank you so much for this video!!
Thanks, Nan, for assuming we all had that tuning app on our phones. Other than that, very insightful and helpful. You're cute and funny too. Thanks again.
I am normally a figure-it-out-myself type of guy. Thank goodness I found your entertaining video before I broke strings or took out an eye. I'll look for more. --- like -- what to do with a bow that is losing its strings. (I mostly play guitar and piano, but I can murder the Godfather (theme) on my violin.)
Hi Nico, sometimes the humidity is so low that the wood of the pegs shrinks and won’t stay tight. Try a humidifier-check out this blog post for help on that: www.nancello.com/blog/sudden-floppy-string-syndrome-how-to-prevent-it. If that doesn’t work, you could try “peg drops” which you can find on Amazon... Worst case, you might have to take it in to a shop and have them look at you pegs to see if something is wrong.
Maybe this article will help: stringsmagazine.com/ask-the-expert-how-to-stop-your-pegs-from-slipping/ And if you are wondering what peg compound is, here's some I found on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Hill-The-Original-Peg-Compound/dp/B000F3KSOU
In the 5th grade I learned how to play I’m in the 8th grade now. I stopped playing in 6th grade because my little brother took the pegs apart but now after I have fixed it I will learn how to play again. My 5th grade teacher didn’t teach us how to tune or read music so you kinda guess how I ended up here😅
This vid didn’t help at all, my cello won’t go up and it’s just wiggling all over the place, tuning it lower to make it higher, didn’t really do anything. I need some more help! Sorry

Am I the only one who's here after the fact that a string broke 😭
Joaquin Alvarez just broke mine to with the pegs
I didn’t know you were supposed to use the fine tuners and snapped my C string 😰😭😭
Joaquin Alvarez nope 😂
Zachary Chromey well r u supposed to use fine tuners but if the string is really out of tune then use pegs
Just broke mine too 😭😨😰
Thank you for using humor to get your point across. You were able to successfully get my new Cello tuned. Now I have to learn how to sit with it.
Try this: www.nancello.com/blog/simply-sitting
I outright quit cello because I could never get the damn thing tuned, and had no one to teach me. I might take it up again some day.
Lol
My teacher did it for us and I don’t even know how to tune it I have broken a string because she made it really lose so 😅✌️
This video is great! Thanks for making this video! So helpful to me and my students!

Man I feel ya. Playing guitar for 20 years and then I have to worry about a tuner that isn’t bolted down...what kind of diabolical invention is this?
lmao same
after 4 broken strings across 2 years this video is what FINALLY taught me to use the tuning pegs. i didn’t realize how much the counter pressure on the peg box helped and just tuned 3 strings with the tuning pegs with absolutely no issues thank you!!
I broke 3 in my first week of playing😃
this intro really hits different in 2021 xD

Thank you! I successfully tuned my cello after my 1 1/2 years of playing/never touching the pegs.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’ve been playing cello at school for four years now and have only once tried to tune my home cello using the pegs- the string snapped and I was terrified to touch the pegs again. I just completely tuned my cello with the help of your video- thank you so so much.
This is my 2nd time snapping the A string. So freaking annoying.
This is my 2nd time snapping my c string I feel you bro
Ive snapped my A once, cant imagine snapping it twice
Oh my god SOO helpful! Haha I did almost everything wrong oops 🙊 also I love the background music it's so pretty 😄

This is the scariest thing about my cello. I just dont want to touch the pegs cuz i know they probably will snap. Although i must try
This is incredibly helpful!

See if you can get your hands on peg dope or peg drops (I got mine on amazon). That will help the pegs stick better when you press them in. Good luck!

You saved my day before an audition subscribe and like is the only appreciation I can give you
the video was incredibly helpful! thank you very much, I finally was able to tune my cello with the pegs
This video was VERY helpful.... not only that, this video KNOWS how scary pegs are...
plus the fact I had to tune the peg my music teacher stepped on.....
I just needed to know why the pegs kept popping out when I tune them. I appreciated the video! Thanks!
Thank you so much I didn't know how to use pegs until I found your video
Can someone help me?
My A-string it not tuned (on pegs)
and whenever I slowy turn the peg,
my peg goes back to its original place
and it's supper frustrating
Thank you! Very helpful for this guitar-playing dad with a cello-playing middle-schooler.
OMG thanks for this I was freaking out cause I didn’t know how to tune and then I found this
Thank you very much! I was so afraid of tuning my cello by pegs. Now I feel free
thanks for this! I just tuned my mates cello. they dont know yet ;). x
Love it! Thank you for this wonderfully informative and fun video!
Just replaced my a string on silent cello, tried to tune, and d string broke! I'm glad I found your vid, cuz I was so done 😭
I wish teachers would take more time to teach students how to tune their own cello. My own cello -which is about a century old- requires real strength to adjust the pegs.
Haha! Thank you, my G string is always out of wack when I don’t play for a week. Great video!! 👍

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I just broke my A string and know I understamnd what I did wrong!
Thanks, Nan, for assuming we all had that tuning app on our phones. Other than that, very insightful and helpful. You're cute and funny too. Thanks again.
this is more like a horror story than a tutorial for tunning a cello with pegs XD
You're so adorable! Like the Drew Barrymore of cello peg tuning!
Totally Awesome!

Hey i can’t do this with the pegs what I make wrong ? I press it in but 1min later it is wrong again thank you Nico

So what do if it keeps re loosening after I get to the right pitch?

So- I tried this because my cello fell and it got out of tune, my A string will just return to its spot it was , what do I even DO
Cute, funny, and informative. Triple play here folks!
I was trying to tune a Jargar A and it broke before reaching the pitch. I hate them.
What app did you use?
very helpful!!! Thank you so much :)
I wish you had more talking tutorial videos. You are so funny!
Thank you so much for your comments! Any particular cello topics you want covered in a tutorial?
Also, check out my blog at www.nancello.com/
Nothing in particular. Just all the topics will be fine!
What's that app called??
+Ameera Yacoub clear tune, I use it for my cello.
+Ameera Yacoub clear tune, I use it for my cello.
+Ameera Yacoub the one was called clear tune, not sure about the one with the actual pitch one

Cleartune
Are you pulling or pushing
You should push in the peg to make them stick. I never pull them. If they are stuck, twist them towards you to try to unstick them.
Thank you so much, this was very helpful.
Thanks bro this really helped
Thank you! Very helpful.
in love with you, this is super helpful!
This helped me A lot
I broke my string what do I do
Kgs 2 yeah same ;(
I watched this tutorial right after I broke my string I’m back to see what I did wrong
What's the song name? :)
I wrote the song, but I didn't name it. What do you think it should be named?
+Nan Kemberling I really like it... What about "tuning you", greatings from Mexico!
Great name! Thank you.
I'm gonna try it and I'll update if it breaks
My c string keeps playing b instead of c
My a string almost took out my eyes when it popped
In the 5th grade I learned how to play I’m in the 8th grade now. I stopped playing in 6th grade because my little brother took the pegs apart but now after I have fixed it I will learn how to play again. My 5th grade teacher didn’t teach us how to tune or read music so you kinda guess how I ended up here😅
As a beginner, exactly how I feel when tuning pegs…sweating all over. Will try your method tomorrow.
Welp
I still break em :(
This will help in the future I’m sure
every time I used the pegs my string flopped off the bridge so this vid is super helpful
THAT was a very serious video.
1:26
Very cool thanks
Thanks for helping
Thanks 🙏❤️🙏
She said that we will have to wear a mask in public. We all are now
I know how to, but I get so scared to break the strings that I wish to watch someone else do it😭
Getting stuck is what keeps your strings in tune.!
Why arent my pegs moving???😭😭😭
about to tune my cello... wish me luck
😃Thanks for helping me
I don’t even play the cello, I play the violin! Why am I watching this?
About to give it a 3rd shot with my A string 🙃🤪
tysm for this
I'm terrified the string will snap and I will cry 😳😭
I'm learning cello from Drew Barrimore!
This vid didn’t help at all, my cello won’t go up and it’s just wiggling all over the place, tuning it lower to make it higher, didn’t really do anything. I need some more help! Sorry
Cute lady..very helpful
+HenryChiu you're an idiot.
Sigh… I came here after trying to tune my cello and snapped my A string… ;-; wish I found this video just a few minutes sooner.. ;-;;
I came here so I don't have to go to the instrument store fore the 50th time. Lol. And I still can't get my A string peg to up to A. 😒😭😔
The background music kills me!
Do what most advanced cellists do - install fine tuners. Sheesh.
a mask in public lmao 2020
Just got a new cello, out of tune, tried to tune, snapped A, sad birthday
How much was it as for some cellos don't have good strings I say a okay cello is (800-1000) or more
Haha cool video!!!
Fuck pegs. I do everything right and I still break a string.
I broke a string
I watched the video and than my string broke
Ok this don’t work
buddy was wearing masks before it was cool
This is sad
