Its not to say I don't accept who I am or love myself but it has been the easiest way for me to deal with it. I was rejected by my family as well. Again thank you for this program. Too many of our brothers are suffering in silence due to homophobia and other fear from family and communities alike. Black brothers celebrating their lives and loves is as progressive as we get. WOW!! Everyday I struggle with this lifestyle. I am a 63 year old black gay man that has a testimony to the majority of these stories WITH the exception of actually "coming out". I have lived a whole life as a lie and I applaud these MEN for standing on their truth.

This was good. I’m a 52 year old black gay man. I live in a pretty accepting environment, including work and church. It’s gotten a lot better from when I was a kid but sometimes I’m surprised how much homophobia and hatred of gay folks still exists. I think discussions like this help. Part of the problem we had when I was young is you felt so alone. I had a teacher tell me when I was young that homosexuality didn’t exist on the continent of Africa. At least kids today know that gay people are everywhere. We’re every race, culture. We’re fem, masculine and everything in between. We’re not alone.
Has anyone noticed that the TH-cam posts with sassy, feminine, or comedic black gays have mega views while this post featuring out, educated, and not stereotypical black gays only has 3000 views after being posted for many months? What does that say? I say that not only is society is not interested in us but blacks in general and the black gay community is not interested in us. That is sad but expected. Thank you Derek for this post. It is much needed.

Am from the Caribbean and I'll be 58 come Feb 1, I lost my lover, he was 19 I was 18 ,growing up in the Caribbean was the hardest life anyone can live been, my boyfriend at time kill himself ,He just couldn't go on living been gay knowing his family won't accept it, am out now but I now live in London,And happy content with my life There is not day go by that I don't think about him but God is good.

Black gay men being "looked down upon" among family, friends, neighbors I feel is a cultural thing also. And this goes for Gay African, Latino men, men of color in general. Gay white men, even though they are ostracized also, are more accepting of themselves, masculine or effeminate . They are more open about their sexuality than men of color from when I'm noticing.
As a gay black man who never seemed to fit in the gay community because I didn't know gay men like myself, I never felt like I fit in the gay community. Thanks for putting this segment out for the gay black man who feels there is no representation of them.
Try being fully present !!!!! Stay off the apps or anything disallows human physical contact. N.Y can be socially challenging if you act like an aloof New Yorker........Walk without being on your phone see what happens....
I watch videos like this and be like why can't it be me. Like my family should one day accept me if not completely. I mean any ideas on how to come out to a Nigerian parent who doesn't even know what being transgender or gay mean, it's like good luck explaining that to them and also like good luck explaining you are transgender and gay at the same time. It's a series that will never end😢. I love my parent they are the best but they are Nigerian. My mom bought me a sweatshirt that had LGBT design on the back, I ask her if she knows what it means and she was like its just a design.

I'm a 42 year old black gay man and never had to come out as to who I am. And I am very well respected maybe because of my masculinity. But everybody knows that I'm gay. All my friends and family accept me for being me.

I came across this video by accident and I glad I did. It is good to see a video featuring masculine gay black men because black men are always portrayed as feminine or sissies. A good example is the Maurice character on the BET series, Sistas. I am a gay closet black male that lives a recluse and private life. Ryan Ashley Lowery is an attractive black man and if I was a younger man, I would ask him out on a date. In reference to the guy born in Newark, New Jersey, I hate the term DMV because most people think of the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you live in Washington, D.C., say D.C., not DMV. If you live in the state of Maryland, say you're from Baltimore, Silver Spring, Glen Burnie, etc. I didn't hear any of these black men state, they're members of the Divine 9. For those that don't know what the Divine 9 is, it's a black Greek Fraternity organization like Kappa, Que, Alpha, Iota, and Sigma.
While I don’t consider myself straight acting in any way, I am just as far away from the flamboyancy I see amongst the majority of black gay men. What a breath of fresh air to see “guy-next-door” gay black men getting some attention for a change. Although, as other people have stated, it saddens me they don’t get the same attention and views as the flaming, effeminate black guys on youtube. I grew up having no gay role models of color. The only ones I saw on TV or other forms of media were men who dressed and acted like women. And I knew I wasn’t like them and didn’t want to be like them. Glad to see this generation have a variety of people they can look to and identify with. If I had these kinds of forums when I was growing up, I would have had a much happier life.
Derek in part 2 please address childhood sexual abuse, i noticed myself and a lot of my male gay friends were sexually abused as children, lets talk about that as well.
Great video and very inspiring. Straight people who choose to judge us versus getting to know us always want to place us in some type of box based on the few gay people they have met. The same thing is done with people of other races, nationality, religion, sex, etc. Get rid of the boxes and realize people are made up of various differences. It's what makes us unique/special. Stop judging by your standards and trying to control others.

I am white. Grew up in sixties and teenager in the seventies. Exactly the same feelings. Knowing instinctively that ‘this’ will not be accepted, feeling shame, Not having masculine role models fearing that all gays were the very looked down on effeminate types, the people i understood later were THE types that in my Holland initiated Gay equal rights because they were the ones that could not be closeted because they were so obviously homo and they are the ones that deserve the credits but being teenager i could not identify with. Later coming out, living in London i was shocked to find out that 90% of the gay guys were so straightforward and that instantly gave me a feeling of reassurance. Once again nothing wrong with flamboyance and i also understand that the problem might lay with the straight looking types because they don’t need to open up and if things go wrong again, and i fear they will, there seems to be a backlash, then these might out of convenience be the first to closet themselves again. And since they are the bulk that will be a big problem. Here one,great, guy said that during a long relationship at work he was afraid to speak out. And that in the 2010 ths. We are not talking fifties. Anyway. If ALL would come out today, all over the world, that hetero world would be shocked and with so many and soooo many unexpected there would be no turning back. Bit difficult to witch-hunt millions of people in one’s country. Now the problem is that only,again the one’s that stand out will get hunted. Not the masses. It made me wish many times that gays were born with some sign like a …. a small wine spot on their right cheek. So no-one can hide. Then again, that might provoke baby killing in many cultures. Anyway. I love these guys. Good examples. Video like this should be compulsory at schools. Teacher could ask: Any comments ? So who is the man now ? Silence. Proceed to the maths lesson. 😊

The only ones I saw on TV or other forms of media were men who dressed and acted like women. And I knew I wasn’t like them and didn’t want to be like them. Glad to see this generation have a variety of people they can look to and identify with. If I had these kinds of forums when I was growing up, I would have had a much happier life.

Great video and very inspiring. Straight people who choose to judge us versus getting to know us always want to place us in some type of box based on the few gay people they have met. The same thing is done with people of other races, nationality, religion, sex, etc. Get rid of the boxes and realize people are made up of various differences. It's what makes us unique/special. Stop judging by your standards and trying to control others.

2 many times in society we always feel we have 2 prove ourselves 2 d so called straight society, and as gay persons we have 2 labelising ourselves with derogatory words that only makes others c us as trash,we have great gay community builders,doctors,lawyers and a lot more than wat d media showcases us 2 b,wat I must say though, we as d gay community must not allow others 2 discredit us in ways which is very untrue of who we r ,no matter wat haters may say love yourself,4 god loves us all and don't let a few narrow minded people ruin your joy.

I am white. Grew up in sixties and teenager in the seventies. Exactly the same feelings. Knowing instinctively that ‘this’ will not be accepted, feeling shame, Not having masculine role models fearing that all gays were the very looked down on effeminate types, the people i understood later were THE types that in my Holland initiated Gay equal rights because they were the ones that could not be closeted because they were so obviously homo and they are the ones that deserve the credits but being teenager i could not identify with. Later coming out, living in London i was shocked to find out that 90% of the gay guys were so straightforward and that instantly gave me a feeling of reassurance. Once again nothing wrong with flamboyance and i also understand that the problem might lay with the straight looking types because they don’t need to open up and if things go wrong again, and i fear they will, there seems to be a backlash, then these might out of convenience be the first to closet themselves again. And since they are the bulk that will be a big problem. Here one,great, guy said that during a long relationship at work he was afraid to speak out. And that in the 2010 ths. We are not talking fifties. Anyway. If ALL would come out today, all over the world, that hetero world would be shocked and with so many and soooo many unexpected there would be no turning back. Bit difficult to witch-hunt millions of people in one’s country. Now the problem is that only,again the one’s that stand out will get hunted. Not the masses. It made me wish many times that gays were born with some sign like a …. a small wine spot on their right cheek. So no-one can hide. Then again, that might provoke baby killing in many cultures. Anyway. I love these guys. Good examples. Video like this should be compulsory at schools. Teacher could ask: Any comments ? So who is the man now ? Silence. Proceed to the maths lesson. 😊
