It's so refreshing to hear someone talk about intimacy and connections between two gays! ❤ As a gen z I feel like many gays forget that something like love making is a thing... I don't understand all that hook up culture. I couldn't give my body to guy I didn't even trust enough to give him my phone unlocked - position top or bttm doesn't matter.

@@ItsJustNick_as an older gay man myself, I feel that there is way too much focus on the hookup culture and the physical/sexual side of being gay and even more so post-Covid, it holds no interest for me - I’ve always felt that it’s a poor way to relate to and interact with other people, that when you see a “hot” or “cute” guy that you feel the need to “jump his bones” in a “hookup” right there and then - but this applies as much to Grindr (which I will not use for that reason) as it does to the gay scene and the gay clubs/bathouses/saunas, etc

I came out before the Internet was in society. I’m not really good at making friends and as I’ve gotten older has gotten harder. But when I was younger, I used to join an off a lot of gay groups like front runners, metropolitan community church, gay men’s dinner groups gay sports groups. You come back to these groups and you tend to meet the same people over and over. You build relationships with this constant meeting and before you know it, you could have a friend.

This is such a refreshingly honest conversation to see and I’m glad I can comment on it. As an openly gay man myself, I’ve often been troubled by the concept of ‘gay hookup culture’ as it’s something I’ve chosen not to participate in.
I think it warrants careful examination and pure honesty about what these encounters are. These encounters are characterised by their transitory nature and lack of emotional commitment. The existence of such a culture is often cited as a defining feature of modern gay life, but as I said before I disagree with this and refuse to participate in it. As we all know the gay community has long been marginalised and stigmatised, facing systemic discrimination and social ostracism.
In this light, the development of a subculture that prioritises sexual freedom can be seen as a form of resistance against normative societal constraints. Casual sex, in this sense, becomes a means of reclaiming agency and asserting identity.
However, while I’m sympathetic from a historical perspective, it is not without its problems. The valorization of hookup culture can inadvertently reinforce reductive stereotypes that paint gay men as inherently promiscuous and incapable of forming stable, long-term relationships. This reductionist view fails to account for the vast diversity of experiences and desires within the gay community. It also risks perpetuating internalised homophobia, where individuals may feel pressured to conform to this presumed norm at the expense of their authentic needs and desires.
That’s not even taking into account the psychological implications of this subculture, which are substantial. Research suggests that while some individuals may find hookup culture liberating and fulfilling, the reality is that an overwhelming number of others experience negative psychological outcomes, such as feelings of emptiness, decreased self-esteem, and a sense of disconnection.
Lastly never underestimate the role of technology in this topic. The role of technology in facilitating hookup culture is foundational. Dating apps and social media platforms have undoubtedly expanded opportunities for sexual exploration and connection. However, they have also commodified intimacy, reducing human interactions to transactional exchanges based on physical appearance and superficial criteria. This commodification can perpetuate body image issues and foster a culture of instant gratification that undermines the development of deeper, more meaningful connections. That’s simply my take on this subject.
On an unrelated note about careers, I think it’s about having a self-awareness about one’s strengths and weaknesses, formulating a plan that emphasises one’s strengths and playing to that plan.
For me personally, I’m lucky that I found my passion quite early, I hold two master degrees and I’m currently completing a PhD in mathematical physics.
Honesty with oneself is absolutely crucial to the realisation of one’s passions and subsequent careers.

I love this more serious side of "ItsJustNick." Yes, responding directly to viewers questions is quite helpful. So, I would definitely encourage more of this type of podcast. My entire career has been in education, and so my concerns lie with younger viewers - especially those who live in small, rural communities and/or in ultra conservative areas. While this younger generation seems more open about their sexuality, there are still so many who lead that life of quiet desperation. Even if they realize who they are, they may still have limited (or no) opportunities to meet other queer people. Nick's comments about Facebook, I believe, are quite valuable. As you all stated, if a person wants a real relationship with another, connecting with that person is so critical - and may lead to all things being better. But first the person needs to have opportunities to actually meet like-minded people. Exactly how to do that can be quite difficult for a young person living in a very conservative family in a very conservative part of the country. All four of you guys are awesome, and in a position to make significant changes in people's lives. Thank you.

I knew of Nick for years, but didn’t start religiously watching until his blogs mentioning his long distant bf in England. When that catastrophe fell about and Anthony stepped in like a Knight to save the day, I became a SUPER FAN!! Ant was always the strong quiet hero in my eyes. Then this podcast started and now this Seggsy Hero really stepped up to tge plate with his thoughts & ideas. I LOVE how Ant appears to have Blossomed to the audience, but it’s probably Just him feeling really comfortable being himself in this setting Nick & their Uncles. Nick hit the sex overdrive question right. Some individuals actually have hyper sex drives. And they can be challenging for a partner. The best way to deal with that s to talk about what’s happening and find a mentor middle place that’s good for you both. And you may need to allow your partner to have sexy alone time so they don’t want to explore outside of the relationship.

I am an only child and there has been... tension isn't the right word, but a lot of sadness, particularly with my mother who always wanted to be a grandparent. Now that she's getting older she feels a lot of hopelessness in her life, that she won't ever be a grandmother, she's kind of giving up on life in a way. I feel guilty but don't know what to do. She's always been supportive and loving, and she never 'blames' me for not giving her grandchildren, but I see her just so sad and it breaks my heart. :(

This was really interesting! On the lesbian question, I think people may doubt them more because many straight women are affectionate with each other and might kiss each other for fun. Whereas, if men were to kiss or show affection, people think there’s no way they could be straight (which is problematic in itself). Loved this podcast so much, just wanted to add that thought 😊🩵

*Great advice that you've had years to figure out who you are, so give your parents time (up to 12 months) to learn who you are.*
I've wondered if parents' rejection of gay kids is because they think that their bloodline is not worth passing on. If you believe in survival of the fittest, in Darwinism, is having a gay child or children plreventing the continuation of a family line? That must be frustrating for them, if that's what they're thinking.
