  • How to thermal your RC glider, the good old downwind technique.
Instead of flying upwind where you almost fly blindfolded in terms of thermals (Unless there is circling birds or other indications that there is lift) it is much better to have a wind indicator that shows the point where the wind is blowing to. Wait for a small Wind direction change from the normal, and fly to that point.

As a wind indicator you might like to try using a 6 metre telescopic carbon pole with say 10 metres of VHS video tape attached at the top (the thinnest VHS240 tape is best). Not only does it respond to the lightest of wind it also shows very clearly when there is an up-draft as the tape streams out upwards from the pole. I find by standing just down-wind of the pole the tape streams out over my head and I can pick up what it is doing in my peripheral vision without having to look away from the model to see it.

While rc slope soaring off a hill, my friend and I caught a thermal that took our planes so high we could only just see them. Somehow we got them down.!

Yes :) then it's nice to have a glider with flaps that can dive vertical without overspeeding :)

Excellent tips thanks, I'll try that.

Interesting. Will have to get the Radian out and try that. Make some kind of easy to set up wind sock.

How do you keep your plane from getting blown away

Luke Calls I just circle with the thermals when it go Downwind, and when I feel its time to go back I go to glide flight mode or speed flt mode if there is more Wind and just fly it back. Some people think that thermaling is best with a light glider, but when there is Wind it needs a good penetration to go against the Wind. This one is a 3 meter span and allmost 3 kg, and it will speed against the Wind if I set it in speed mode with flaps and ailerons around 2 mm up over neutral.

your final altitude was 100....and how many meters? in the USA we are limited to 400ft or about120m or so. It sure looked like a beautiful day for a sail plane!

youmanskids In Denmark the max altitude is 100 meter, so no flying ..or videos over that ;)

+youmanskids Question. In the US are you really limited to 400ft??? I know that you are within a certain radius of an airport but Is there a height limit outside this radius??? Check that out.

+Mike White yep, thats right, all UAVs (all rc planes) are limited to max altitude or 400 ft, thanks to the FAA rules. we are working to make some changes but for now is 400 ft.
