This is a wonderful version by Jerry Jeff & the GONZO Survivors, I can’t get enough of John Inman’s guitar work, that whole band is amazing. Love to see them tour a bunch of smaller venues with Django Walker keeping the “Scamp’s” legacy rolling.

A lot of folks seem to see this version in competition with Ian Tyson's version. I don't buy that...this is a tribute to Tyson, to make sure that even more folks would get to hear the song...Jerry Jeff Walker has always admitted his debt to the great western songwriters, and what a way to say "Thanks Ian Tyson" for creating such a witty and poetic bit of western art. :-)

Well it's two eggs up on whiskey toast
    Home fries on the side,
You wash her down with the roadhouse coffee
    That burns up your inside,
It's just a canyon, Colorado diner,
    A waitress I did love,
We sat in the back 'neath an old stuffed bear,
    A worn out Navajo rug.
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
    Shades of red and blue
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you?
Well, old Jack the boss, he left at six
It was, 'Katie, bar the door'.
She'd pull down that Navajo rug
And we'd spread it across the floor,
I saw lightning frame the sacred mountains
The wooing of the turtle doves
    Just Iying next to Katie,
    On that old Navajo rug.
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
    Shades of red and blue
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you?
Well, I saw old Jack about a year ago,
Said the place burned to the ground,
All he saved was an old bear tooth
    And Katie she left town,
Well, Katie, got a souvenir too,
Jack smiled as he spit out a big old plug,
Well, you shoulda seen her coming through the smoke
She was dragging that Navajo rug.
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
    Shades of red and blue
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you?
So every time I cross the sacred mountains
    And lightning jumps above,
It always takes me back in time
To my long lost Katie love,
You know everything keeps on a moving
    Everybody's on the go,
Hey, you don't find things that last anymore
    Like a hand-woven Navajo.
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
    Shades of red and blue
    Aye, aye, aye, Katie,
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you!

John Inman makes this version with his slashing opening riff on that great black Tele, just gives this version some extra bite.....First saw this live version in 2018, "just a few years " after the video...as a 40+ year fan of JJW , great to see these songs live. JJW toured in Australia so long ago that I cannot even recall the year....pretty small band. Guess unless you are the Eagles or the great Jimmy Buffet ( 5 very memorable visits, but no more now I guess) , just too expensive to bring his standard band here.
Thanks a million to those responsible for putting this magic video up.

I had never heard of this song until the other night. I moved to TX a year ago, and a friend from WY was visiting. We went to Cheatham St. Warehouse to listen to a local band. They did Someday Soon, and Ian's name came up. My friend commented that this (Navajo Rug) is one of his favorite songs, so I had to look it up. I have to agree with him - a great song, whether done by Ian or JJW.

Like forty, forty five years ago a colleague asked me if I had heard the song Navajo rug. I shrugged it off until the internet was invented then many more years until I finally found and listened to it. Durn fine tune right up there with the best of true cowboy poetry..

Better than the original, tbt. Less stiff. I'm from Alberta and my family is rodeo, so don't come at me. I just found this song spinning in my head today, and I always loved it growing up. But in revisiting, the Ian Tyson version is very contrived and stacato. This is much more what the song had become in my mind over the years. The storytelling quality that is inherent to the value of the song.

I've liked Jerry Jeff & his style of music & story-telling, for many years now. This song is a great representative example of his wonderful talents - especially as a live performer. To me, he has always seemed like a 'western' .. or a "Texas" version .. of the same, basic 'troubadour', larrakin style embodied in Jimmy Buffett's type of music ... unique talents, both of em ....

I agree Coley, Ian is very talented and his career has certainly taken a bit of a turn since the early days of "Ian and Sylvia" to the western style he adopted back in the 70's. Ian also lives the life with his Canadian prairie ranch in Alberta. I also remember when both he and Sylvia (I'm not sure if they were divorced by then) hosted a weekly musical show on CTV back in the early 70's. It also featured their backup band "The Great Speckled Bird".

@juiceman1965 I did not, but I can certainly picture, both of those guys are so friendly they could get along with a rattle snake...:-) How I miss the old TNN and Texas Connection, American Music Shop and the great live concert shows where I first came into knowing of such artists as Jerry Jeff, Shawn Colvin, Guy Clark, Tish Hinohosa, and so many others....Is there anyway we can make a business out of reselling these great alt and roots country bands?
