Made in Coventry, England, the first 242 had bodies which were made out of ALUMINIUM, and the rocker/cam covers for these engines were also made out of ALUMINIUM!

One of my high-school girlfriend's dad had one of these, he probably still does. It took him 12 years to restore it,and another 3 years trying to find a good crankshaft so he could rebuild the engine. This was in the mid 90's. He restored it in the 80s,early 90s, so there was no internet. He was telling me that he finally found a good crankshaft in Boston. That's 3k miles from here. 😂 He flew out there and bought it. Then he bubble wrapped it and tried bringing it back as carry-on luggage. The airline wouldn't allow that. So he bought it a seat and flew back here with it.😆 He had it painted British Racing Green, with Imron paint. If I remember correctly, his was a 1953.

Hey here's another little bit of trivia Jaguar used the same 6 cylinder double overhead cam engine from 1949 to 1992. You can pull some horsepower out of them too.

Small point. The missing head was not "crime". Portions were polished aluminum, not any "chrome".

Ugh those are the prettiest damn things you’ll ever see when they’re out cruising. I used to have a neighbor with a dark red 1950 roadster that was a nearly original 1 family survivor; somehow it looked even more sleek with dull paint. He had a bumper sticker where the chrome was bubbling that said “Anything that falls off this automobile is of the finest British craftsmanship” 😂

Yes, polished alloy cam covers but more significantly the entine cylinder heads were alloy.

First of all, its not a jagwire. Its pronounced jag u are and the xk120 did not have a chrome head. It came with an aluminum head with polished aluminum rocker covers.

I just keep looking at that faded green paint that influenced fashion. It wound up on all the clothes and kitchen and household appliances up through the early 1960's. Same thing happened with Petty blue later.
There are guys can make that head, and the whole top end from scratch.

the engine was actually built for the big saloons, mark 7 especially, the engine was ready before the car was ,they created the roadsters. I had a 52, mark 7..the hydraulics needed refurbished and it would been road ready. I loved the toolboxes built into the doors. I've still got the Diamond Superlux spare on the rim , someone stole my hubcaps.but I've still got a set of 52 mark 7 wrenches that came in the driver's door.

Yeah they just seem to get more and more beautiful as time goes by. Clint Eastwood was a Jag man. He said Jag always made the best looking cars. The XK 150 in( I think) "play mist for me" was his own car . He'd had it from new and still has it I think.

A XK120 was supposed to have been my first car. it was in perfect condition only 15,000 original miles. All black. They were only asking $1,500 for it. I drove it and really wanted it but someone convinced my family it was too fast for me to handle. I guess they forgot about that when we took delivery of a Stingray Coupe. I want a lot of races in Corvette Stingrays over the years.

  • @oldtrucker672

The XK120 held the (world), speed record for production cars in the early 1950's. There was a brass plaque on the dash attesting to that fact.

My dad had the 69 XKE 12 cylinder white with white top and white leather interior. He and mom would take me and my 2 brother for ice cream on Friday night then drive 140 mph with the 3 of us sitting on top in the back. Within a minute we were peeling ice cream out of our eyes. And my parents thought it was funny. Smh
