The complete making of a new door skin for a Jaguar XK120 Roadster. Metal shaping made from aluminium 1.25mm . Hammer, dolly, englishwheel, beadroller, Tig weld.
This video makes me appreciate the XK 120 even more. I owned a couple: one for 45 years. The very early cars were all alloy. The vast majority were mostly steel bodied made from pressed steel panels with alloy bonnet, trunk, and doors. I believe the wood framing inside the trunk and doors was ash. What a labor of love.
The straight cut three pronged metal shear was invented by Albert Swink after World War II in Los Angeles. An ex-Air Force guy he was unemployed after returning. His military work and California’s crazy post war appetite for cars led him to invent and patent the first automatic car wash. The air blowers were electric super chargers from B-17’s. There was a feature article in Look Magazine that described the wildly popular new service. In the 1960’s another guy, Clint Brown designed the use of newly invented outdoor carpet strips to be oscillated over the hood, roof and trunk. He then tinkered with different types of rubber and plastic materials to be used in the brushes. There were lots of people in the industry but Al was the first and Clint tinkered to make it better. The magazine article is worth the search. Ps. Al’s wife became Mayor of Santa Monica, California.
